As of 23 May, the Town of Southampton has amended it’s parking rules, requiring
a Current Resident Only Parking Permit for all town beaches and Trustee Roads.
This rule is in effect 7 days a week, with no exception, regardless of the lot
attendants being present or not. This is a major change from all previous
years, and is in effect from 9AM - 9PM. All Town beaches along the ocean,
Shinnecock Bay, and Peconic Bay, and beach access roads - any beach road which
has signs posted - included. No Day Permits or Non-Resident Permits are being
issued at this time. Code Enforcement Officers are patrolling the area.

More information is available on the Town of Southampton web site, under Parks
and Recreation. Cupsogue and the Westhampton Dunes Overlook are not affected,
however, Pikes, Tiana, and Town of Southampton parts of Shinnecock West are.

10:30 Dune road was very quiet - no raptors and very little waterfowl.

11:30 Quogue Wildlife Refuge had a pair of eagles lurking around who not long

On the way home another pair of eagles was spotted above sunrise highway just

[nysbirds-l] dune road

2018-01-06 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I drove the length of Dune road and spent a little time at
the inlet. It was dead low tide at the inlet and there were a lot of ducks
feeding and getting out of the wind on the western side. Most appeared to
be red-breasted mergansers, but there were also surf scoters, black scoters
and the single numbers of various other winter waterfowl. No eiders
observed (though a few seals poppped up).

Dune Road yielded one extremely well hidden Snowy Owl as well as a number
of northern harriers include a grey ghost.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road, Suffolk County

2017-10-22 Thread Mike
Highlights of a morning driving and walking Dune Road from Shinnecock to
Cupsogue included a single shearwater, probably Cory’s, at Shinnecock along
with dozens of Gannets and about 10 Royal Terns milling around. A whale
cruising by offshore was probably a Humpback.

At Triton Lane I saw about 8 sharp-tailed Sparrows- all that I had decent looks
at appeared to be Nelson’s, while over at Cupsogue the five or so that I had
decent looks at all appeared to be Salt Marsh. Photos are on the NY Birders
Facebook page. An American Bittern was in the marshes near Triton, otherwise a
scattering of the usual suspects.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Dune Road Skimmers

2017-06-02 Thread Jane Ross
Just counted 26 black skimmers on Dune Road, east of Tiana beach as reported
yesterday by a Paul Hagen (thanks, Paul!)
Also present, Royal terns, oyster catchers, least and common terns, Rudy
turnstones, willets and assorted peeps The beach area is roped off for nesting
birds, so scope highly recommended!

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road & Eastport Pond Birds (Suffolk Co.)

2017-01-04 Thread Ken Feustel
Sue and I spent the morning birding Dune Road in misty and overcast conditions.
We combined our Dune Road trip with a late morning stop at Eastport Pond. There
was not much on the ocean beside flyby Common Eider and scoters. The bays were
virtually devoid of ducks. At Shinnecock the jetty’s were frequently underwater
form the churned-up ocean, but we still managed to pick up Harlequin Duck (3)
Iceland Gull (1) and Snowy Owl(1). A few Great Egrets were lingering at
various locations along Dune Road. Cupsogue was not very birdy, although a high
tide did not help.

At Eastport Pond there was a good collection of waterfowl, including Eurasian
Wigeon, Canvasback, and Redhead. While on Dune Road we got a call from Pat
Lindsay that a Ross’s Goose was at Lake Capri in West Islip. We stopped on the
way home at 12:45PM and quickly saw the bird with some Canada Geese. Thanks Pat!

Good Birding,

Ken & Sue Feustel

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road Birds (Suffolk County)

2016-02-06 Thread Ken Feustel
This morning I visited Dune Road with the intention of birding from Shinnecock
Inlet (SI) to Moriches Inlet (MI). On the way down to SI I observed a number of
flocks of Robins feeding on berries of Red Cedar and various ornamental
evergreens. At 47 Dune Road a drab Pine Warbler put in a brief appearance in
the pines before disappearing on the south side of the road. As I headed past
Docker’s Restaurant there were two utility poles snapped in two, presumably
from the previous day’s storm. A convoy of utility trucks quickly appeared to
effect repairs and the road was closed off. Oh well, back west to MI. At
Cupsogue a westerly scan of the beach revealed hundreds of large gulls on the
beach and in the water (there was a minor Surf Clam wash-up) - by far the most
gulls I have seen this winter. Despite the numbers, the variety was nothing
special. A first winter Iceland Gull was on the MI east jetty and an adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull was on the sandbar in the interior of the inlet.
Shorebirds included single Ruddy Turnstone and Red Knot. Harbor Seals were in
good number on the sandbar as well. A trip back east on Dune Road in the early
afternoon had the road still closed off. I stopped at Eastport Pond and
Patchogue Lake where waterfowl numbers were down from my last visits in early
January and nothing of particular interest was observed, although it was nice
to see both Redhead and Canvasback together on Patchogue Lake.

Good Birding,

Ken Feustel

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road revisited, 3 days running !

2015-04-08 Thread robert adamo
Cornelius Clifford lives in Hampton Bays, is a retired high school teacher,
and a relation of mine through marriage, who has spent 81 years on this
earth (until today) without ever hearing of the Snowy Owl bird specie, and
of course, ever seeing one !

After picking him up for our luncheon date, instead of heading toward the
restaurant, I took a detour down to the Tiana parking lot on Dune Rd., as
per the post of a successful sighting earlier this AM. It was windy & raw
when we arrived, and Con didn't have a hat, but he did see the bird through
my spotting scope. While his eyes & glasses did not make for a clear
sighting, the owl's color, shape and size was apparent to him. When I
showed him the Snowy in a field guide, it all came together for him. He
felt enriched by his adventure...as did I !

Cheers,
Bob
P.S...After feeding the soul, the feeding of the body was scrumptious !

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road Revisited

2015-04-07 Thread robert adamo
I returned to Dune Rd. this afternoon, and once again saw, what I'm pretty
sure is the same Snowy Owl, albeit in a fairly close, but different
location.

Starting at the Jessup La. Bridge, Westhampton Beach, I road Dune Rd. to
it's easterly end at the Shinnicock Inlet, Hampton Bays. Although today's
outing was a little longer than yesterday's, the Great Egret total fell
from 13 down to 8.

Also seen e/o the Ponqougue Bridge was a perched, adult, female Merlin,
along with 2 each of Red-throated & Common Loons in the inlet, and 2 drake,
Common Eider, in the ocean w/o the inlet.

I may, or may not, have seen the owl on my own today. As i passed
yesterday's location, the chair was still there, but the bird was not. This
was not surprising after getting an email from Pat Aitken stating that she
also got the bird yesterday, and while it was still in the same general
area, it had moved to a dune on the ocean side. Continuing east, I came
upon a father & son birding team (I didn't get their names, but they live
in the Setauket area} who had their scope on the Snowy ! It was resting on
the farthest Duck Blind, situated on the n/s of the marsh. I forgot to look
for a pole #, but the road distance back to the Tiana Beach & Marina is ~
1/2 mile.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road, Shinnecock, Riverhead (Suffolk)

2015-03-03 Thread Douglas Futuyma
This morning I drove Dune Road from Westhampton to Shinnecock Inlet, under
exceptionally pleasant conditions for birding: it was almost windless and
relatively "warm" (by current standards). I checked the ocean at almost
every viewpoint. A single Red-necked Grebe was a short distance east of
Quogue Village Beach, and a pale Rough-legged Hawk was over the marsh near
Dolphin Lane. On the bay at Shinnecock Inlet, the tide was extremely low.
About 70 seals (mostly or all Harbor, as far as I could tell, given limited
knowledge and considerable distance) were hauled out on a sandbar to the
northeast. I saw fewer than 100 Common Eider on the bay, most quite
distant. However, a very large flock of birds, well over 5000, extended
seaward, somewhat east of the eastern jetty. Most were very distant, and
identification would have been fairly difficult if there had been wind.
Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks predominated, but there were at least 1000
Common Eider, as well as many feeding gulls and a fair number of Common
Loons. (I saw no Red-throated Loons today, and my impression is that they
are quite uncommon this season.) I did not see King Eider, but had limited
time to work the large flock, much of which, moreover, took flight and
settled very far out when a boat approached.

At the fields east of Riverhead, small flocks of geese were flying over,
but almost the only ones on the ground were in a very large, dense flock
on Roanoke Avenue, south of Reeves Avenue. I could find only Canada Geese,
but had only about 20 minutes to search.

[nysbirds-l] dune road - EPCAL

2015-02-12 Thread leormand .
Dune road was very quiet today. Large portions of Tiana Bay are frozen
over with black ducks and gulls everywhere. Only saw one Northern Harrier
that we spooked from the shoulder of the road. Plenty of Scoters near the
inlet (on the west side of the jetty) but didn't spend the time to see if
anything interesting and unusual was in there.

EPCAL was very quiet (did a quick drive-thru) and security was posted at
the entrance to the runway. No sighting of the Artists' Lake/Patchogue
Lake bald eagle either. Patchogue lake did have a few Canvasback ducks
though

Also visited the mouth of the Carmans River - a few species of ducks
including coots. One Northern Harrier - but nothing else of note.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road - Saturday, March 22

2014-03-23 Thread leormand .
I forgot to mention this, but I did a trip down Dune Road yesterday (From
Ponquogue Bridge to the first Bridge in Westhampton) and basically saw
nothing. It was very quiet and very drab - though things should turn
around shortly, starting with Red-winged black birds.

What I did notice, however, were two ospreys occupying one nest platform,
just to the west of the Bridge in Westhampton (in the marshlands). I was
surprised to see two, assuming it's a male and a female as usually the
females come a bit after the males.

For anyone interested in seeing photos of the grey morph and red morph
screech owls from Massapequa Preserve - you can see them here:

2014-03-23 Thread Matthew Clements
Signs of spring, family of 5 Ospreys circling and carrying nesting material.
Never thought I'd say a "flock" of Ospreys.

Grasses pretty matted, not much of note, a lone Black Crown Night Heron
standing in the grasses. Point east of coast guard station still littered
with Scoters.

Enjoy Spring!

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road

2014-02-09 Thread leormand .
This afternoon along Dune Road I spotted 1 Snowy Owl on a duck blind
between Tiana and Dockers
Other birds seen here Black Crowned Night Herons and Great Blue Herons.
The Inlet was quiet - a raft of birds off one of the jetties but nothing
in close. A few red-breasted mergansers in the open (very calm) ocean.

Highlight was a Peregrine Falcon on the big tower at the Coast Guard
station. Photos of birds can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road Birds (Suffolk Co.)

2014-01-25 Thread Ken Feustel
Dune Road and Shinnecock Inlet continue to produce good birds. Highlights of a
mornings birding (mostly from the car due to the wind) includes Black-legged
Kittiwake (2) off of the Shinnecock Inlet east jetty, two first winter Iceland
Gulls in and around the inlet, the continuing first winter Glaucous Gull in the
parking lot, at least one female King Eider in the inlet, and a Red-necked
Grebe in the Oakland’s Restaurant boat basin. A Clapper Rail was on the salt
marsh east of Dolphin Lane. A few photos are on my flickr site.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet

2014-01-12 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I took a ride to Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet.

The inlet held a nice raft which consisted of various scoter species and
Common Eiders as well as some fringe red-breasted mergansers. The
highlight was an immature male King Eider that I photographed
(accidentally).

The rest of Dune Road was really quiet - there was a Snowy Owl in the marsh
near the Bridge which was previously mentioned on this list. A northern
Harrier was found further west as well as a female Belted Kingfisher. I
noticed a very large number of gulls both over the ocean/on the beach where
large waves were crashing as well as perched on dredging equipment in the
bay. I'm sure some patience at either location would have produced
something good. As the sun set and I drove over the bridge, I noticed
another sizeable collection of gulls perched on the rocks of the coast
guard marina - it may be worth checking for all you gullheads out there

Photos of the birds - including the king eider can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road/Shinnecock Inlet Birds and The Power of Networking (Suffolk Co.)

2014-01-05 Thread ken feustel
We started our birding day at Montauk Point, where there were a good number of
Scoter and Eider on both sides of the Point. Despite the good numbers, we could
not turn up anything of interest. The highlight was a good Razorbill flight
consisting of approximately110 birds. After leaving the Point we started
working our way west, still not turning up anything unusual. We fortuitously
received a phone call from Doug Futuyma, who related that Brent Bomkamp had a
LeConte's Sparrow on Dune Road. We had not seen anything particularly
noteworthy up to that point and since we were headed to Dune Road anyway - why
not? Upon arriving at Triton Lane on Dune Road we ran into Doug who told us
that Brent had determined the bird was a Grasshopper Sparrow and would we like
to see the Nelson's and Salt Marsh Sparrows just across the road? Why not? We
quickly headed into the shrubbery and found two beautifully marked Nelson's
Sparrows (race Nelsoni) along with Swamp and Song Sparrows. We then proceeded
to the other side of Dune Road (specifically, the dirt parking lot just west of
Triton Lane) where the Grasshopper Sparrow made a quick appearance perched on a
railing (photo on my flickr site). We then headed down to the Ponquogue Bridge
where there were eleven American Pipits, most were in one flock on the old
Ponquogue Bridge causeway and a single Boat-tailed Grackle was in the parking
lot. While looking for the pipits we ran into Tim Dunne and told him about the
Triton Lane sparrows. We then headed to Shinnecock Inlet where we again ran
into Doug Futuyma looking at the previously reported five King Eiders.
Additionally, the first year Glaucous Gull was wandering around the jetty
(photo on my flickr site). While we were there Tim Dunne called and asked would
we like to look at the Orange-crowned Warbler that was with the Grasshopper
Sparrow? Why not? We went down to Triton Lane and shortly found the
Orange-crowned feeding on goldenrod seed heads around the parking lots south
perimeter. One of the birders we were with pointed out a Snowy Owl across the
way that started to hover over something. That "something" turned out to be a
Clapper Rail (which we believe escaped). After a slow start a nice finish to
the days birding with a little help from our friends.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road/Shinnecock Inlet

2014-01-05 Thread Tim Dunn
In additions to the birds mentioned by Brent, the continuing juvenile Glaucous
Gull was in the parking area alongside the inlet.

While observing the Grasshopper Sparrow at the Swan Beach parking lot, I found
an Orange-crowned Warbler in the same area.

On the north side of Dune Road at Triton Lane, a Snowy Owl flew in along the
edge of the marsh and had a brief interaction with a probable Clapper Rail.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road and Shinnecock Inlet (Suffolk Co.) - 1/5/14

2014-01-05 Thread Brent Bomkamp
There were some excellent birds in the vicinity of Shinnecock Inlet and
Dune Road this morning. Along with the aforementioned King Eiders, a
second winter *Iceland Gull* and an adult Great Cormorant were on the
western jetty at the inlet. At the parking lot at the base of the
Ponquogue Bridge there were the four previously reported American Pipits.
No sign of the Lapland Longspur.

At Tiana Beach, I had close but brief looks at a bright *Ammodramus* sparrow
in the dirt parking lot on the north side of the road. I prematurely ID'ed
the bird as a Le Conte's, but after about an hour of waiting the bird
returned to the open and was actually a bright *Grasshopper Sparrow*. It
was feeding in the open with a mixed flock of Song and Savannah Sparrows in
the sandy lot. Also in the vicinity were about six or seven *Nelson's
Sparrows *and two or three *Saltmarsh Sparrows, *all remarkably
cooperative. These individuals were all on the north side of the road in
the short reeds directly across from the parking lot, not in the
surrounding marsh.

Further down the road, Aaron Virgon pointed out an incredibly
cooperative *Seaside
Sparrow* in a bush immediately alongside the pavement along the ditch that
parallels Dune Road west of Tiana, making four *Ammodramus *species on the
day. The bird subsequently flew to the south side of the road into a patch
of phragmites. Despite the disappointment, still a good day.

Good Birding,

2013-05-22 Thread AndyatWH
I hesitated to report seeing a Tricolored Heron today, but I do have a
picture, although it is not very good, but, by process of elimation, seems to
be this heron. If any one would care to look at my picture and confirm this,
please let me know, and I will E mail it. Thanks!

Re:[nysbirds-l] Dune Road Red-necked Phalarope

2013-04-24 Thread John Gluth
Thanks to Derek for posting the bird's relocation here after I called him, and
to Eileen for her more detailed location description. After not finding the
bird at its original location (Road L), I decided to make a systematic search
of likely locations to which it might have moved, starting with Road I east of
the Ponquogue Bridge. After much scoping there I was about to give up and move
on, but figured one last look to the east couldn't hurt. Glad I did because
that's how I spotted what I was fairly sure was the bird, a good 1/4 mile off
to the east near the fishing boats. I hurried over there to verify, and indeed
it was the flashy female phalarope (say that 3 times fast). I didn't find too
much else of note along Dune Road (as far west as Pike's Beach) with the
exception of ~4500 scoter out on the ocean, viewed from Road L. All 3 species
were present, with the approximate numerical breakdown being 90% Black, 8%
Surf, 2% White-winged.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road

2013-03-02 Thread Luke Ormand
Dune Road this morning was at an extremely high tide (as high as I've ever
seen it when not in a storm). It was easily passable in a sedan - but a
good rinse with freshwater is recommended afterwards Due to the high tide
birds were scarce but I did note the following:

Belted Kingfisher
Northern Harrier (2)
Red-breasted Mergansers
Black Ducks
Great Blue Herons (2)

For photos of the birds - you can view them here:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road - Hampton Bays/East Quogue

2013-02-12 Thread Luke Ormand
This afternoon I took a trip to Dune Road which was free and clear except
for a massive puddle to the East of Tiana which kept me from driving
through with my car (trucks can pass no problem).

Birds were scarce, but of good quality. American Bittern, Semi-palmated
Sandpiper, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Black-crowned Night
Heron. Photos of birds can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road - Hampton Bays

2013-01-21 Thread Luke Ormand
This morning I took a drive down Dune Road. On my way toward Hampton Bays
I spotted an Adult Cooper's Hawk on a powerline. Two hooded mergansers
were near the Quogue/East Quogue border on a small pool on the north side
of the road. Other highlights include: American Bittern (near triton
lane), belted kingfishers, 2 great egrets and three great blue herons.
Well off-shore, near the 1-mile buoy were 2-3 huge rafts containing
thousands of birds. My guess is eiders or scoters, but they were too far
offshore to tell through my camera or bins. Photos of some of the birds
including the bittern can be seen here:
http://birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com/2013/01/american-bittern-on-dune-road.html

Additionally, I saw on LIbirds.com that a Purple Gallinule was picked up
approximately 70 miles offshore by some fisherman and brought to the
rehabber in Hampton Bays... that bird must have really been confused
swimming around with all of the puffins out there.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road (Suffolk) crossbills, no W. Grebe

2013-01-15 Thread Douglas Futuyma
I searched for the Western Grebe without success from 7:45 to 9:15 this
morning, west and east of Ponquogue Bridge and on the ocean in that
vicinity. I was more successful in my search for finches and bitterns to
the west on Dune Road. As I prepared to leave Dune Road at the Swordfish
Beach Club (intersection with Jessup lane), a flock of about 20 Red
Crossbills landed in several small pines and afforded extended eye-level
view. I also heard Red Crossbills and saw one fly over, about a mile east
of there. Together with Ken Feustel's report of crossbills at Cupsogue
Park, the observations suggest that this species could be encountered
anywhere along this road. An American Bittern was near the boardwalk that
leads into the Quogue nature preserve (now closed to entry).

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road, Suffolk - Inlet to Inlet

2012-07-28 Thread Derek Rogers
Some good birds out today. I started at Cupsogue which had the standard mix
of shorebirds. *RED KNOT* numbers were up with near 100 individuals. The
highlight on the flats was 1 adult basic *BONAPARTE'S GULL*. The boney was
loafing among Royal and Common Terns. I counted 19 *ROYAL TERNS*.

I then decided to follow up on John Turner's Road K observations from
yesterday. There were several great birders in the vicinity and we
collectively located 1 *MARBLED GODWIT* and 1 *WHIMBREL*. The Godwit seems
to be favoring the west side of the island that is located across from Road
K. The Whimbrel was feeding within the mussel beds between Road K and the
Ponquogue Bridge. Both birds seemed to intermittently disappear behind the
Spartina grass.

By far, my most exciting bird of the day was a *MANX SHEARWATER* located
well inside the mouth of Shinnecock Inlet. This is hands down the best land
views I've ever gotten of a Manx. The bird entered the inlet, put on a
brief show, circled back, rounded the east jetty and out of sight. Talk
about being in the right place at the right time.

Finally, I briefly scouted out Mecox which was very slow by way of
shorebirds. However, there was a mix of approximately *150
SWALLOWS*roosting on the sand behind one of the dozer mounds. Tree and
Bank
dominated the group with Barn Swallow numbers in the single digits. The cut
has recently been reopened providing for some good tidal exchange.

Some photos of yesterdays gulls and today's Bonaparte's can be seen on my
Flickr page.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road (Hampton Bays to East Quogue) - After the Rain

2012-05-01 Thread Eileen Schwinn
Following up on Ken Feustel's observations barrier beach report: along Dune
Road this afternoon I found three Baltimore Orioles and three Brown Thrashers
within a few hundred feet of each other, along the Old Ponquogue Bridge
boat-launch road. A Common Loon was under the bridge, along side the parking
lot, and two Nashville Warblers were just west of the traffic light at the
south end of the bridge. At Tiana ocean-side pavilion, I saw a Great-Crested
Flycatcher. Indigo Bunting were seen near Neptune's and also on the front lawn
of house #81, where they were seen over the weekend. I also noted great
numbers of White-throated Sparrows, though not the numbers that Ken reported.
There were at least 3 flocks of 10-20 birds in each flock. The only shorebirds
I saw were Willets, Killdeer, and Greater Yellow-legs.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road, Quogue, and Central Suffolk Birds (Suffolk Co.)

2012-01-22 Thread ken feustel
I spent an unproductive morning on Dune Road this morning, hoping that the cold
weather and high tides would push some birds out of the marsh. Other than a
first winter Lesser Black-backed Gull at Shinnecock Inlet, the birding was
slow. I stopped by the Quogue Wildllfe Refuge to see if the previously reported
Orange-crowned Warbler (OCW) was present. No OCW, but I did observe two Pine
Warblers, one a first year female type and the second a colorful adult male,
photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kfeustel/

The sub-adult Red-headed Woodpecker continues at the Baiting Hollow Boy Scout
Camp. Park in the unmarked parking lot on the north side of Sound Ave., east of
the main entrance to the Camp. Proceed north along the trail. When you see a
pond on your left proceed up the trail that goes up the east side of the pond.
Search the Black Locusts (medium size trees with light , furrowed bark) that
are between the trail and the pond. The bird is most often seen near the
north-facing sign "Asharoken". The two times we have seen the bird it was high
in the Locusts, feeding quietly and could be easily missed.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road L.I. Birds Today, Jan. 5th

2012-01-06 Thread Carl Starace
Hi All, Had a brief look along Dune Rd. this morning with Dick
Belanger. We found the 1st year female Snowy Owl over on Warner Island,[east
of Ponquogue Bridge], that had been seen earlier this week. One of the 2
recent Great Egrets was working the ditch just west of Triton Lane and an
American Bittern was about, just east of Dolphin Lane. Good January

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road/ Eastport Pond, Long Island Birds Yesterday Afternoon.

2011-12-23 Thread Carl Starace
Hello All, Congrats. to Dave Rankin,[and thanks to John Haas],
for the terrific/amazing upstate find and photos of the Grey Crowned Rosy
Finch!!! In eastern Suffolk as of yesterday afternoon the lone female
Harlequin found by James Clinton and Mel Cowgill last Saturday was still
present close in to the western side of the jetty on the west side of
Shinnecock Inlet. The Common Eider raft,[near 200 birds], continues out in
the bay inside the inlet along with some smaller groups of LT Duck. There
were a fair number of RT Loon around but we only had a single Horned Grebe
along that whole stretch.. Down towards East Quogue Kevin Nolan and I also
found 2 Great Egrets close to bayside in the ditch along the dirt road by
Triton Lane. Eastport Pond is loaded with waterfowl. Of note were 3
Redheads. Happy Holidays to everyone, Carl Starace

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road, Mecox Inlet, Sag Pond, and Calverton Birds (Suffolk County)

2011-04-19 Thread ken feustel
On Dune Road this morning there was not a lot of bird activity, and the marsh
looked ravaged by the recent storms and high tides. I had my FOY Eastern
Willet, as well as a slightly early Eastern Kingbird. A flock of thirty Common
Eider are still present at Shinnecock Inlet. At Mecox Inlet the two Caspian
Terns continue. Also present was a single Laughing Gull, American Oystercatcher
(2) and a few Tree Swallows. At Sag Pond a single Caspian Tern was observed,
and the Lesser Black-backed Gull is still present. At Enterprise Park at
Calverton Pine Warblers were singing in the Pitch Pines in and around the old
airport. Eastern Meadowlarks were also present, and I counted fifteen American
Kestrels hunting in the fields around the airport runways.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road bittern

2011-01-05 Thread Joe Jannsen
Today at 3:00 PM, I observed an American bittern on the marsh (bay) side of
Dune Road, between Neptune's and Triton Lane. The bird was very successfully
hunting in a pool directly across from the Town of Southampton Sand Bar Beach,
so maybe it will remain in the area.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road (Suffolk Co.) Birds

2010-02-15 Thread Ken Feustel
This morning at Shinnecock Inlet the five Harlequin Ducks were along the
eastern jetty with good numbers of Common Eider in the inlet and in Shinnecock
Bay (approx. 300). Only one Bonaparte's Gull was observed in and around the
inlet. A cooperative American Bittern, scarce this winter, was in the salt
marsh west of Dockers Restaurant.

On Saturday, a Salt Marsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow was in the marsh west of Tiana
Beach, and an unidentified Sharp-tailed Sparrow was just east of Docker's
Restaurant, probably A. N. nelsoni, judging by the extensive orange on the
upper breast, but we had too brief a look for a definitive identification.
