Currently we don't offer any builds for MacOS X on the PPC platform as
it was the case with OOo 3.3.0 and older releases. And to be honest, I
don't think that we will do it with newer releases. This platform is -
from the today's point of view - too old and we have nobody here in the
project that would support it. To support it means taking the source
code, building the installable files, do detailed QA tests to verify its
stability.

I would like to effectively install, and contribute to OpenOffice.

Finally, I can just offer you the most recent OOo legacy release (3.3.0
and older) for the PPC platform and hope it's available for your
favorite language:

error at installing OpenOffice 3.4.1

2012-09-15 Thread Klaus Doerbecker

Dear experts,

I had Apache OpenOffice 3.4 on my computer and it worked.

Then I downloaded the (German) version 3.4.1 but the installation
produced an error (see appendix).

I visited the registry and examined the Berechtigungen (rights) of the
entry 4C552FD3 and its higher levels, Windows, Software.

But all Berechtigungen were o.k., that is Vollzugriff (full access) for
SYSTEM,
klaus (Charo\klaus) and
Administratoren (Charo\Administratoren)

I did/tried the installation of the new OpenOffice with klaus (with
administrator rights).

Now I neither have the old version nor the new one.

Could you help me, please.

I have this morning scanned my Windows XP computer on which is installed
yesterday's release of AOO 3.4.1 using AVG Free edition 2012.0.2197 (this
morning's update) at the most detailed settings and it has received a clean
bill of health.

The question that might arise in connection with the original post is that of
the filename/download site; if it is from a legitimate (i.e. Apache controlled
site) there should be no worries.

It was in the past not unusual for new releases of OOo to give false positives
on many virus scanners - the hooks for online updating registered sometimes as
poentialy unwanted programs/possible trojans.

As another poster (Dan?) pointed out, it is possible to check the Md5Sums of
the downloaded file against the MD5Sum list on the Apache site, to be certain
that it is exactly the file prepared and released by Apache. If these sums
check out then all should be well.

AIUI that's not possible to be *certain* that the file is identical [1].
Hashes are fine for checking that a download has not been
corrupted/truncated in transit, because the chance of a hash collision
in such a case is vanishingly small.

But they are not generally considered sufficiently robust to *prove*
that the download is what it appears to be.
It is theoretically possible to create two different downloads with
the same hash.

Obviously if the hash check fails, then there is a problem, but a
successful check does not provide 100% proof.

Checking the detached signature for the download is much more secure,
but is of course a bit harder to do.

I'm not doubting your remarks above about the possibility of duplicate hashes,

Actually there will be at least 3-4 days when the files and hashes are
available during release votes.
But more likely the rogue file would be published later when it would

Ideally we'd have a way for the user to verify this themselves,
without getting into command-line tools. For example, a trusted
website with an applet that would verify hash and signature for a
local file. Or could this conceivably be doe with Javascript?

I'm sure we would all be seeing a warning if there was an intrinsic problem in
the compiled code. Normal reaction from Volunteers on en-Forum is that a
virus/malware warning on a new release of OpenOffice from the approved download
sites is a false positive and I think so it has always proved; with the
transition to Apache special care is needed until the AOO releases become well
established, lest there be adverse publicity/comment.

It would be helpful if Maurice could tell us the URL of the download site, the
actual file name and size.

I put AVG free version on an XP VM, updated virus signatures,

So if Maurice was indeed getting an AV hit, that suggests he might

I'm sure we would all be seeing a warning if there was an intrinsic problem
in the compiled code. Normal reaction from Volunteers on en-Forum is that a
virus/malware warning on a new release of OpenOffice from the approved
download sites is a false positive and I think so it has always proved; with
the transition to Apache special care is needed until the AOO releases become
well established, lest there be adverse publicity/comment.

It would be helpful if Maurice could tell us the URL of the download site,
the actual file name and size.

I finally found the image attachment that Maurice sent out originally.
It said of the download, it is not commonly downloaded and could
harm your computer'.

So this was not a false negative but part of the reputation-based
mechanisms that AV's are starting to use. They look at a variety
factors, including the age of the EXE and how many other users have
installed it. If the program is new and not well known, then you will
get warnings like this. The warnings go away over time. The only way
to prevent them initially is to have your code be signed, or to
whitelist your hashes in advance with the AV vendor.

I will link in the new Release Notes where it goes and post some very
minor update to the Installation page tomorrow, 2012-08-22, (9:00ish
PDT) if that's ok.

I'm assuming Marcus will do what he's prepared at that time (tomorrow),
unless we hear otherwise.

OK, lets see.

09:00am PDT will be 06:00pm CET. Very likely I won't be home before
08:00pm CET (11:00am PDT).

What about to set the release time to 12:00pm PDT (high noon), will this
work for you all?

Marcus

OK, new release notes and slight tweak to install instructions are now
in staging (committed not published), so when Marcus comes along in a
bit and uploads the new 3.4.1 main download stuff and publishes, we
should be in business.

I'm basically offline for a good part of the day today, so I hope all
goes well.

But...Juergen and Marcus's tomorrow comes much earlier than mine so I
don't know exactly what time anything will be happening.

If he says it is ready on their side can move our changes to staging

Actually, we can move to staging now if we want. But just be careful

I will link in the new Release Notes where it goes and post some very

OK, new release notes and slight tweak to install instructions are now
in staging (committed not published), so when Marcus comes along in a
bit and uploads the new 3.4.1 main download stuff and publishes, we
should be in business.

I'm basically offline for a good part of the day today, so I hope all

I'm at home now and just found this mail which seems to be the latest in

Hi all,

I got some questions maybe later, maybe stupid, maybe in wrong thread, but
:

1) I hit today on [Stage] link today some times, is it problem ?

2) I need exact links for the files, and I don't know where the files will
be.

It will be in SourceForce openoffice.mirror directory ?
(i can't provide Apache links because of load, right ?)

3) The whole ooo-site 'll be publised in the same time, so in this time
have to

be all NL pages reworked ?

4) There wasn't been Slovak packages of AOO from 3.2.1, so lot of users
use AOO 3.4 in Czech
language and 3.3.0 too (3.3.0 has only language pack). The redirection of
update service to /sk/download

will not work right ?
Or is it used some geolocating service based on IPs - from which country
user access to pages(or can be)?

5) Google has indexed old SK page, (I slowly remove it) but is possibe
force Google's robots to reindex page ?

NOT now but one day.

Thanks for answers and sorry for bad timing.
Regards,
Michal Hriň

Thanks

Marcus

But...Juergen and Marcus's tomorrow comes much earlier than mine
so I

don't know exactly what time anything will be happening.

For the time being AOO 3.4 is still the default, once the news is out we'll
set the dafult to AOO 3.4.1.
Note that the default comes into play for users downloading AOO directly
from SourceForge (mostly because of the Carousel on SourceForge directory
displaying the Apache OpenOffice ads).

2012-08-22 Thread Rob Weir
that the Slovak translation is now available:

http://www.openoffice.org/cs/

That way, when someone upgrades from Czech 3.3.0 or 3.4.0, and gets
sent to that page, they will hear about the Slovak translation. Would
that work?

Or is it used some geolocating service based on IPs - from which country
user access to pages(or can be)?

Two things: new downloads and upgrade downloads. Upgrade downloads
get dispatched based on the language of the user's existing OpenOffice
install. New installs use the HTTP language headers, I think. But I
don't know the details of that logic.

 5) Google has indexed old SK page, (I slowly remove it) but is possibe force
Google's robots to reindex page ?
 NOT now but one day.

I can include a URL to the new SK page in the release announcement.
That should encourage Google to recognize it and index it.

Re: Fwd: [RESULT][VOTE] Release Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating) RC2

2012-08-22 Thread Rob Weir
So some possible confusion coming. I'm seeing a few websites have
already announced 3.4.1 and are pushing users to www.openoffice.org.
Of course, they are not finding AOO 3.4.1 there yet.

For example this article is being spread via Twitter:
http://majorgeeks.com/Apache_OpenOffice.org_For_Windows_d3461.html

And I can see, via Google Analytics, that we're getting a good amount
of traffic referred to from that site.

So I'm going to spent the next hour or so verifying the download page.
If others can help with this, please do:

for Slovak are referring still to SourceForge directly. When
you have finished updating the sk links on your NL webpage, then we can
change the main download portal to refer first to the sk website.

Marcus

If he says it is ready on their side can move our changes to staging
and do some quick testing to make sure we don't have any broken links.

Actually, we can move to staging now if we want. But just be careful
everyone not to publish yet.

1) 12 hours for the mirrors to sync?

2) SourceForge can grab the tree from dist.apache.org after you have uploaded.

3) Then website updates, some brief testing to ensure the links are
all working.

4) Then the announcement via all channels, including the upgrade notifications.

Do we want to set a tentative time for #3 and #4, so volunteers can

Hi Rob,

I'm the maintainer of LanguageTool (www.languagetool.org). I found a small
glitch in the OpenOffice 3.4.1 release announcement at
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html:

freeze problem with Calc when languagetools are installed

This problem is actually not limited to Calc, it at least also affects
Writer. Also, it mostly affects LanguageTool - not sure if languagetools
is supposed to mean that.

It would be great if you can change the announcement (if it's not too late
yet).

Thanks

I've just made a couple of other translation-relevant fixes to
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html :
- Mention portable versions
- Remove Intel from supported platforms when this could cause
confusion and/or FUD (saying that we support Windows (Intel) could
lead someone to think we don't support AMD processors, while of course
we do).

Details below.

The Italian versions, contributed by volunteers, are at:
Announcement (staging):
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/it/stampa/comunicati/aoo341.html
Announcement (live):
http://www.openoffice.org/it/stampa/comunicati/aoo341.html

Release Notes (live, when published):
http://www.openoffice.org/it/stampa/comunicati/aoo341-rn.html

I didn't publish the recent sets of changes not to interfere with
others. But there's nothing wrong if someone else needs to publish and
publishes these pages too.

Re: [Announcing Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1]

2012-08-19 Thread Asghar Rahmani
Hello Rob, we will talk certainly about it and other subjects,
associated with AOO users.
(It´s too soon for me now.)

A nice day for everybody,
Asghar

PS
At the time being, I´m just trying to get a general (but solid)
overview and understanding about ODF toolkit
and AOO (UNOIDL, JURE, SDK). I see it´s really need time. I followed
your tip and busy with the ODF spec too.

deliver good and stable software with focus on quality. It will again
help to continue the success of OpenOffice.org and will gain confidence

This time I did not prepare a separate page to highlighting the release
candidate. We had developer snapshot since several weeks and the latest
one based on revision 1372282 is intended to become released if the
voting succeeds. That means and to make it clear you vote here on the
final release based on this snapshot build.

This release is intended to be a bug fix release and to introduce some
further languages:
(1) 71 issues are fixed and a detailed list can be watched under
http://s.apache.org/Huv.
(2) 5 further languages are now officially supported: British English,
Khmer, Slovenian, Slovak, and Finnish.

For a detailed feature overview please see the release notes under

After the vote of the PPMC the vote will start on

In a fresh VirtualBox of Ubuntu 12.04 64bit I did:

- Download the source tarball and verified its signature.

- Configured and built it.

- Installed it.

- Did some short tests.

Everything OK.

This is based on tests on the binary packages by me and other community
members from the ooo-progetto-it mailing list. Note that it occasionally
happened (during our tests and in users reports about 3.4.0) that the
Windows installation does not start automatically; this is probably
related to other software, but I integrated the Known Issues at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4.1+Release+Notes
accordingly, just in case.

That is what I thought when I cast my non-binding vote to create this
project at ASF - specifically that it was recognized as needing this
type of differentiation from earlier projects.

Binary artifacts are fine, they are just considered to be unofficial convenience
artifacts.

The ASF's mission is software for the public good. That means that users must
be able to see the source and be able to build it for themselves. They must be
able to inspect the source to see that it is unhindered.

So, the IP must be clear and transparently so. This is what an IPMC and ASF
Member must measure their vote on.

Sorry, I'm a bit cranky right now. My cpan disappeared while trying to assure
that I had the now required LWP::UserAgent. No one tested the new
download_external_dependencies.pl properly.

1. LWP::UserAgent has been a prerequisite for years. But I think I remember
that it was temporarily removed from one of the older platform specific build
instruction pages.

2. Can you be more specific regarding your problems with
download_external_dependencies.pl so that I can fix it? It exists under this
name for more than two months and since it is used in every setup of a build I
would say that it is fairly well tested. But that does not mean that it is
error free.

3. Please have a look at
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO. Maybe that
page is more helpful. If not, please help me to improve it.

That page *IS* much better!

To handle my case it would be good to suggest that a user upgrade their Perl
dependencies. That path != install.

What did you do exactly? Something like install CPAN; reload cpan ?

As long as the READMEs links get a user to eventually get to this MWiki page
that would be great!

I have changed the README (on trunk) to point to the new building guide
and cleaned it up a bit.

I will try to make a clean install on Mac. The problem is to lay hands
on a pristine Mac environment. I recently read that from MacOSX Lion on
it is legal to run a copy of it in a virtual environment on (as long as
that runs on Apple hardware). So I will set up a Mountain Lion VM and
write down what has to be done to build AOO.

Encouraging News! Many thanks.

A few comments to this Ammounce :

1. About the 3. link, which refers to downloading the AOO 3.4.1:
On the download page I can only find the
OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.0_exe ! If it is the V 3.4.1,
then please update the static content of the download- page soon.

2. Some info about update of an already deployed V3.4.0 to V3.4.1 is
missing. Right?
Suggestion: include titled text-section about this update in „Release
Note“ (and even in this announce too?),
since many endusers may need this information.

+1 from me

I don't know how often I have tested and built this release but I am
satisfied now. The RAT scans today costs me some nerves but anyway

I did my standard tests on the binaries on MacOS, Windows and Lniux
(64bit). It looked ok to me.

I build the src release on MacOS and used the same switches as for the
brinary release. I repeat this step after I have repackaged the src release.

Well I am a developer and no QA engineer or volunteer tester who have
always a differnet view on these things but for me everything works as
expected.

No downloads of externals from the svn repo ;-)

I am now tired and looking forward to a nice short weekend trip with my
wife.

That is your opinion, expressed loudly; it is not Apache or IPMC
policy. We are officially voting on binaries as well and these are
being inspected and these will be part of the official release. The
IPMC doc calls the source artifacts canonical, but the same docs
talk about binaries being included in the official release as well.
In fact, it says of binary packages, For some projects, this makes
sense. For others, it does not. Obviously you have your own opinion
on this, but it is equally true that the vast majority of PPMC members
 have a different opinion.

 -Rob

 Rob,

Please consider the blistering email from Roy T. Fielding, to general@inc
and to infra, on 3/27, 05:50, opposing released' binaries. IMHO, he will
need to change his mind. OTOH, he is a founder and board member ...

Current IPMC policy, as documented, states otherwise. ASF practice,
both with TLP's and Podlings, is to release binaries where the PMC
wishes to do so. The general discussion has gone far beyond whether
or not we release binaries or whether they are official. We're now
discussing how rather than whether these binaries can be signed.

Availability of source code is what makes Apache OpenOffice open
source. But the binaries are what make OpenOffice an end user
application, something no other Apache project has previously
attempted. So it is not surprising that this is a challenge to
long-held practices and habits for some Apache members. But this is
fully in accord with the Apache mission to publish software for the
public good. I'd like to think that open minds can see how binaries
can be just as much of a public benefit as source code can be. If
this is not apparent to anyone, I'd recommend a read of this page:

 http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mission.html

So again I would ask that we choose our words more carefully, since
they are repeated, out of context, and are ascribed greater authority
than we might intend. For example, I read recently on a European
Commission websiste that a group of French agencies decided not to use
Apache OpenOffice, in part because they were lead to believe that
Apache...doesn’t deliver installable software (binaries). This is
 absolutely false.

Convenience binary artifacts are released for the benefit of users.

The phrase convenience binary does not exist anywhere on the IPMC website.

What is said is Many would argue that for open source projects, the
source package is the release: binaries are just for convenience.

But Many would say does not a policy make. The same page also says
of binaries, For some projects, this makes sense. For others, it does
 not.

At the most basic level when we VOTE we are approving the source release.
We are stating that we understand the License and Copyright of the source
and that it is in Policy. This is the standard for the IPMC and an Apache
Member. It is not a vote that says that the code even works properly it
confirms that it is valid Apache Release.

The IPMC will be voting for the the release of source and binaries.
This includes verifying that the LICENSE and NOTICE in the binaries
are correct. If you recall we had a delay in our first release due to
errors in these files in the binaries. If we were not voting for
them, and if they were not official, then we would not have needed to
fix and rebuild before voting. I've seen the same occur in other
projects, where the binaries where JAR's.. So even from the IPMC
perspective there are properties of the binaries that require
verification and which have policy implication.

We, the PPMC, also VOTE that these binary

 Dave,

 Did you see this page:
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-buildflags

That has the build steps and flags used for the binaries we'll be
releasing. There is no single right way to build AOO. There are
variations that will enable or disable various optional features. But
if you want the same thing as what is in the release, the above link
 has the info you want.

This should be linked to from the source package README and also on the 4
build mwiki pages that are linked to from the source.

For now yes but in the future I would change the README to link to the
new AOO Building Guide and would link to the used flags for our binary
builds from there.

I won't know until tomorrow because my cpan config is broken and I now need
LWP::UserAgent to download the external dependencies.

what exactly is your problem Dave, I am sure we can help you. It seems
that we have a lot of room for improvements to insert further checks
etc. and to update the documentation.

@Rob, do we have any statistics about download numbers of the src release?

the source), it means that a
security fix is not released if it is in source only, for a package that
has been previously released in binary form, not as a convenience but
 has a duty.

Maybe a good way to look at this is:

1) Fundamental Apache principles include The Apache Way as well as the
Apache License. Like any other open source license, ALv2 is grounded
on copyright. Copyright is grounded on the creative expression of
authors. So with computer programs this puts the source code (and
documentation and art work) in a central position of importance. Our
work to carefully track the source code, where it comes from,
collecting iCLA's, adding NOTICE and LICENSE files, this is all geared
to clarifying the copyright and license of the source code. The source
code *is* the program. The source code is where the rights of users
come from. This is true even for users who only touch the binaries.
So as a project we always need to have a proper degree of respect for
the source code, NOTICE and LICENSE, and associated build instructions
that allow the project (and in this case the IPMC) to verify that the
source code is complete.

2) The IPMC uses the term canonical to express the status of the
source code in a release:

The source package is canonical. Every release must revolve around a
source package. Compiled languages may also wish to create binary
packages. These may be platform specific.

I think canonical is a good term to use, accurate and unlikely to be
misinterpreted or cause offense.

3) Referring to binaries as being for mere convenience expresses a
developer- or admin-centric view that is appropriate for the majority
of Apache projects. In those cases the binaries are for convenience
only, since their audience of users has the requisite skills to build
the software from source. A little reflection would suggest this is
unlikely to be true for all projects and all users. Threshold
question might be to ask whether your mother could build your project.
Or a 10 year old in school. Or a public administrator. For
OpenOffice, for millions of users, the binaries are not merely a
convenience.

4) Similarly, unofficial might accurately reflect the status of
binaries for some Apache projects. For example, Subversion does not
issues official binaries at all. Instead they link to unofficial 3rd
party distributions, ports, etc. We've talked about listing
unofficial releases as well, e.g., for Solaris, OS/2, BSD,
portableApps, etc. But this is a different beast. It is not the
status of a release that is built, voted on and released by the
project.

I think it is important that we distinguish between common practice
based on common circumstances and Apache policy. Not everything that
other projects do is mandated by policy. Not everything that most or
all other projects do is mandated by policy. Some things are merely
conventional, based on circumstances, but where variation within
policy is permissible. Being the first Apache project to have a
predominately end-user audience means that we will need to continue to
point out this distinction.

aoo-3.4.0-incubating-src.tar.gz 1,148
aoo-3.4.0-incubating-src.zip 620

But I assume most developers who are serious about the source code
would check it out directly from Subversion. I don't have numbers for
that.

As we know there have been over 11 million downloads of the binaries
in this same time period (since May). I assume the ratio would be
similar for other end-user facing open source projects, like Firefox,

proportion of source downloads.

To handle my case it would be good to suggest that a user upgrade their Perl

In retrospect we probably should have created a separate
[VOTE][DISCUSS] thread to make it easier to find the real votes.
Something for next time...

I posted my test results earlier, mainly trying various install and
upgrade scenarios. I know this was a source of pain for some with AOO
3.4.0 so I thought it could use an extra look. I didn't find any
problems.

Today I downloaded the source tar.gz for the Release Candidate and
built it on a new Ubuntu 10.04 LTS VM. I have a few things that I'll
add to the Building Guide based on my experience, but overall it was
quite smooth. I'm not exactly a guru Linux programmer. If I can
figure this out then anyone can.

Good work, all!

 Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing the following candidate as Apache
OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating). This will be our first bug fix release
after the AOO 3.4 from May 8th. A further milestone to show that we
deliver good and stable software with focus on quality. It will again
help to continue the success of OpenOffice.org and will gain confidence
 in OpenOffice.

For a detailed feature overview please see the release notes under

 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4.1+Release+Notes

Installed zh-CN version on Windows, worked on both ODF and MS Office format
by loading/saving/editing/printing/converting with no problem.
Noticed some minor defects on installer for file association and
translation, will submit to BZ. But they are not regression and not release
blocker.

[DISCUSS][VOTE]: Release Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating), RC2

2012-08-15 Thread Dave Fisher
Is there a reason that the README in the source release is still pointing at
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/MacOSXBuildInstructions for Mac Builds?

Minimally this then points to http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/AquaBuild this
doesn't seem exactly like what was used for 3.4.0?

Would someone check the Build instructions and then update to be very clear
what is current.

I am proceeding with my tests as if the prerequisites have not changed and that
I have them from my AOO 3.4 tests build.

Thanks Regards,
Dave

Please show me the simplest way to build on a Mac from Source and show me on

- but I thought that as part of accepting this project ASF was saying
they were open to change.. am I just wrong on that - cause folks keep
saying this as if it is a FACT and I thought it was going to be up to
this project to decide whether binaries are official, or not.

That is what I thought when I cast my non-binding vote to create this
project at ASF - specifically that it was recognized as needing this
type of differentiation from earlier projects.
