Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Funding help needed for xul report templates conversion

2018-03-21 Thread Kathy Lussier

Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce that we were able quickly find development
partners to fund this project. Many thanks to PaILS, Evergreen Indiana,
and SC LENDS, who joined Georgia PINES and Sitka, to fund this important
improvement to the web client. Many thanks to the other sites that also
showed interest in helping move this project forward.

This was a great example of many Evergreeners joining together to make
the transition to the web client a little easier for l of alour users.
What a great community!

Hi all,

project that would allow report templates built in the old client to

the new client, it opens in an old editor that does not carry over
True / False fields for the templates, does not have support for
nullability, as well as some other problems. More information on this
bug is available at https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1642344.

This project is a bit larger than some of our other web client bug
fixing projects. We have a quote from Equinox, and Georgia and Sitka
have committed funds to the project, but more funding is needed to
proceed with the project. This development is expected to ease the
transition to reports in the web client by giving staff the ability to
work with their existing templates rather than creating them all from
scratch.

The tech specs for the project are available at
https://yeti.esilibrary.com/dev/public/techspecs/clone_reports.pdf. If
we can commit to the project soon, we expect it can be completed in
just a few months, making it available for the 3.2 release, which is
the release when the XUL client will be entirely moved from Evergreen.

If anyone is interested in helping us out, please send me a direct email!

Thank you!

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] HTML entities in MARC Record editor

2018-03-21 Thread Dan Scott
Ah, of course you're right that the & will get escaped as in the
MARCXML in biblio.record_entry.marc. But then when it's displayed in the
catalogue or if you load it back up in the editor, you should just see "&"
again.

However, I just tested putting "This that" into a 520 field in our
2.12 system and noticed that the displayed data is "This & that" -- meaning
it is *not* getting escaped. Which is a Very Bad Thing. (Bug forthcoming).

As for your free Overdrive records, yes, I regularly spend time fixing mass
corruption of records that are sourced from OCLC, where someone has
almost-but-not-quite managed to flesh out the table of contents & summary
fields correctly. There is some pretty heinous data out there :)

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] HTML entities in MARC Record editor

2018-03-21 Thread Elaine Hardy
Jason,

Dan is correct -- appears rather than an & because at some point the
symbol is not interpreted correctly or someone copy and pasted information
from another source into a bib record and didn't notice & didn't render
correctly. can also be the result of an OCR program not correctly
interpreting the scan. We used to see it much more often. It is in 520s and
505s since they are often copied and pasted or scanned.

There are also occasions where utf-8 translation of diacritics and other
special characters doesn't happen correctly and the codes display in the
bib record. OCLC did an upgrade once that caused the problem for record
imported with the Z39.50 gateway. Evergreen had a bug many versions ago as
well that didn't display such characters correctly

When I find records what don't correctly display, I overlay a more current
record from OCLC. If it is an scanning or copy and paste issue, I usually
have to correct it in OCLC first (our only source of bib records is OCLC).
While the display isn't as desired, if it isn't causing any search and
retrieval issue, we just handle it serendipitously.

Ours has also not been updated for the web client, and though I've made
modifications over the years (and am about to do an overhaul), I
*think* the original reports documentation I inherited was based on the
Community's, Indiana's, and Sitka's. You're welcome to use any/all of it

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen Oversight Board Elections

2018-03-21 Thread Tim Spindler
Here are a list of candidates. The candidates are listed in alphabetical
order along with their statements. In the next few days, we will be
sending out emails to all who registered to vote in the election. I would
like to thank all who were nominated and agreed to server on the Oversight
Board.

Adam Bowling - Technical Director, Emerald Data Networks

Candidate Statement

As an active participant and administrator in the community for nearly ten
years, I am thrilled at the continued development and implementation of
Evergreen throughout the world. I wish to be a part of it for the next ten
years and beyond.

Jason Boyer - MIS Supervisor, Indiana State Library

Candidate Statement
I have worked in libraries since 2000 and have worked at Evergreen
libraries since 2008 when my library joined the newly formed Evergreen
Indiana Consortium. Shortly thereafter I began submitting patches and have
been a contributor since. In 2013 I took a position as the System
Administrator for Evergreen Indiana. Working on both sides of ILS
management has exposed me to a wide range of concerns from how to make the
most of Evergreen features at a single library to how to scale a system up
to serve over 115 library systems at over 160 physical locations. This has
given me a significant interest in the ways that Evergreen performance can
be enhanced while still adding new features.

Anna Goben - Evergreen Indiana Coordinator, Indiana State Library

Candidate Statement

I’ve been working with the Evergreen ILS since 2008. At that time, I was
working as a Reference Librarian and was chosen to serve as ILS Project
Manager for my small public library when we joined the newly formed
Evergreen Indiana consortium as a pilot member. In 2013, I became the
project director of the Evergreen Indiana consortium, responsible for
training, recruitment and migration direction, event planning, committee
coordination, and policy management for all 116 of our active and 5
migrating members. I coordinated the Evergreen International Hack-A-Way in
2016 and 2017 and serve as a consortium representative to the MassLNC
collaborative development group. Through my roles over the years, I have
had the opportunity to become aware of the needs and experiences common to
front line library staff of all levels as well as the administrative
challenges of a consortium that play a significant role in developing,
implementing, and utilizing Evergreen successfully in libraries today.

Debbie Lubenchill - Evergreen Coordinator, MOBIUS

Candidate Statement

I am a librarian and have been the Evergreen Coordinator at MOBIUS since
August 2012, where I help administer our Evergreen hosting and managing
services: conducting trainings, creating documentation, answering help
desk questions, assisting with system setup during migrations, and
performing a variety of other administrative functions. Being a part of
the Evergreen community over the last five years has been a really
important and fun aspect of my job - attending conferences, serving on
several Conference Site Selection Committees, participating in the
Documentation Interest Group, and helping to plan the 2018 conference. I
have also served on other Boards and leadership teams, both professionally
and in my local community, and my strengths lie in helping people
communicate and work together, problem solving, listening, leadership, and
empathy. I am excited to offer my strengths and skills to the Evergreen
community and look forward to serving you!

Meme Marlow - Director, Worch Memorial Public Library, Versailles, OH
 (COOL)

Candidate Statement

I am Meme Marlow the director of Worch Memorial Public Library in
Versailles, Ohio and a member of the Consortium of Ohio Libraries (COOL). I
have been the director of the library for 8 years. It was during that time
a group of library directors interested in open source ILSs got together to
discuss options for making this a reality. In 2012 these libraries formed
COOL using Evergreen.

Since joining in 2013, my main contributions to Evergreen have been helping
establish the consortium through serving on the COOL board and assisting in
the development of policies and procedures that will be attractive to other
libraries seeking membership in a consortium. In addition, I am now serving
as the president of the COOL board and am an active member of the Evergreen
outreach committee.

Now that COOL is a healthy and thriving consortium, I am ready to get more
involved with the larger Evergreen community. I am looking forward to the
opportunity to serve and I think I can make a valuable contribution to
Evergreen community through service on the Evergreen Oversight Board.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] HTML entities in MARC Record editor

2018-03-21 Thread Josh Stompro
Hello Dan,

We are still on 2.10 using the XUL client, so maybe the 520 display anomaly has
been fixed in a later version. I’ll make a note to check back once we are on a
more modern version.

Would it be accurate to say that characters like & in the marc editor are
encoded as html entities in the biblio.record_entry.marc since they are stored
as marc xml?

The record that I was looking at was one of the free overdrive records, which
are very very very rough, so it wouldn’t surprise me that they are grabbing the
520 from a web page and not being very careful with encoding. I just looked
for occurrences of ‘amp’ and there are only 344 of them and all but 3 are
from the free overdrive records. There are also quite a few instances(6000) of
#8212; (em dash), again they are all the free overdrive records. I guess
we get what we pay for.

I’m tempted to just use regexp_replace against biblio.record_entry to try and
clean these up, like the example here:

Hi Josh:
Quick question: XUL or web staff client? And version?

In theory, what you see is what you should get - MARC has no idea what HTML
entities are, so "" in the editor should be displayed as "" (properly
escaped, of course) in the catalogue.
If you see amp; in the biblio.record_entry.marc, it may be the result of
corrupted catalogue enrichment efforts (e.g. grabbing the summary for a book
from a website via a script with a bug), and thus should just be corrected
directly to "&". Unless it's a deliberately torturous book title like "Escaping
amp; other Secure Web Practices" :)
If in the MARC shows up as just & in the 520 catalogue output, it sounds
like there might be a bug for us to track down...

Thanks,
Dan

Hello, could someone give me some pointers in regards to html entities in marc
data? Sometimes I see used in 490a data and displayed as in the
evergreen marc editor, and in the catalog it is displayed as and not as &.

We also see things like a 520 that contains but it does get displayed as
& in the catalog?

And when I look at the biblio.record_entry.marc It looks like in the
editor gets encoded as amp;, so is this a double encoding error? Should I
ever see html entities when looking at marc data in the editor?

If those should be cleaned up, anyone have any magic spells/queries for doing
so?
Thanks
Josh

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen 3.1 RC

2018-03-21 Thread Kate Coleman
Dan, as someone who has no idea how to do the magic you all do building
code and fixing bugs, I appreciate your assurances and dedication to making
Evergreen great. Us "regular users" of Evergreen are pretty much solely
dependent on the community to address our problems, and I'm sure that can
be daunting. Knowing that our problems are being heard, and that attention
is being paid not just to the LP bugs, but to our community's email threads
as well, is a great relief. Dan, and all of you coders, thank you for all
you do.
