[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Better option for cover art?

2020-02-10 Thread Murphy, Benjamin
We currently use Open Library and are looking for a better option for cover art
in our OPAC.

Anyone here using Syndetics? If so, what are your thoughts?

Are there other tools you'd suggest for displaying cover art?

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] [External] Re: Auto Renew Feature

2019-12-04 Thread Murphy, Benjamin
This conversation has been really helpful. One of my questions had to do with
implementation. I think you addressed it Michele, but I wanted to make sure I
understood.

“To avoid the transition issue with new checkouts vs. existing checkouts, we
update open circulations for the opting in library which are due on the start
date and beyond to set the autorenewal remaining field equal to the renewal
remaining field. In that way, items that were checked out prior to the rule
change will be eligible to autorenew.”

Let’s say you modify your circulation policies with some new autorenewal rules
in place. So, the only materials that will auto-renew are the materials that
check out subsequent to that circ policy implementation, for items that hit
that new policy when they check out? So, if a library wanted to turn on
auto-renewals and have everything currently checked out and eligible for
auto-renewals begin to auto-renew, you’d have to update the values in the
auto_renewal and auto_renewal_remaining fields in the action.circulation table?
Not sure if the duration_rule has to be touched as well.

Thanks!
Benjamin

This is a great discussion!

Thought I'd share how we implemented autorenewals in NOBLE:

A Library can opt in to autorenewal. Only their own items checked out at their
own library will be autorenewable. Network transfers are not autorenewable.

Autorenewal processing happens the morning the items are due so patrons don't
lose any time from their loan period.

Our autorenewal action trigger uses a custom filter so that it only runs for
the libraries who have opted in, and does not attempt to process autorenewals
for checkouts that are not renewable at all.

When a library opts in, and chooses a start date, we adjust their duration
rules to set the number of allowed autorenewals equal to the number of allowed
renewals. If a duration rule has zero allowed renewals, we don't set a value
for allowed autorenewals. This allows the action trigger filter mentioned above
the skip them.

To avoid the transition issue with new checkouts vs. existing checkouts, we
update open circulations for the opting in library which are due on the start
date and beyond to set the autorenewal remaining field equal to the renewal
remaining field. In that way, items that were checked out prior to the rule
change will be eligible to autorenew.

Feedback has been positive, though we have adjusted the notice language a few
times to make it less confusing.

Hope this is helpful!

I'd like to learn about the experiences of academic libraries that are using
Evergreen in a college or university setting. What are the pros and cons of
Evergreen in your environment? Are you using something for managing reserves

Feel free to contact me off list. If its easier to describe your experiences on

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Staff Permissions

2019-05-30 Thread Murphy, Benjamin
NC Cardinal is undertaking a project to rethink and restructure our staff
permissions. We would welcome your scrutiny and feedback on what we're planning
to do. The Evergreen permissions descriptions are not always clear and robust,
so some of the decisions we've made while reallocating staff permissions are
based on guesses and experimentation. As we work through the testing phase and
begin usage in our production database, we intend to contribute any information
gleaned about permissions to Evergreen community documentation.

One of our goals is to make better use of inheritance and avoid assigning the
same permission to multiple permission groups. Here is a visual representation
of the changes we're planning to make.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1MWgz8k9DaYwVxl7BUFBnT_FLSmo3UsoP

Here is a Google Spreadsheet showing permission groups and the granular
privileges assigned to them:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E9FNba6g83Reez9Lqi5sycjKBRWROZlvn5edHD-KC8Q/edit?usp=sharing
Mouse over the column headers to see a description of the intended function of
each permission group. Commenting on this document is open to the public, so
feel free to comment if you have suggestions or insight.

We do not have centralized cataloging in NC Cardinal, so as a part of this
project, we've defined two cataloger permission groups: Item Cataloger
(add/edit/delete call number and item records) and Bib Cataloger (everything
else). We've created assessments that catalogers must successfully complete to
be assigned to these permission groups. These assessments are intended to
ensure that catalogers are doing their work according to our Cataloging Best
Practices https://nccardinalsupport.org/index.php?pg=kb.book=3. We are
incorporating the Acquisitions permission into the appropriate cataloger
permission group, as libraries may freely use acquisitions in various ways and
we don't see a need for the separate acquisitions permission groups. Please let
us know if there is a use case we may be overlooking.

Item Cats inherit all Circulator permissions, but branch managers who perform
basic cataloging and also need to enter closed dates, etc. can be assigned
Branch Admin as a secondary permission group.

Another experimental change is removing the EVERYTHING permission from Branch
Admin (Local System Admin) and System Admin because we think it grants too much
(undefined) power. (We have not found any documentation that defines exactly
which permissions are conveyed with EVERYTHING.) But, we may find this
problematic if there are areas of old code that only check for the EVERYTHING
permission and not a discrete permission.

We've also recently consolidated our patron permission groups down to 12
permission groups.

If any of you have taken on a project like this, we'd love to hear about your
experiences, lessons learned and suggestions.

I am looking for a link to documentation that explains the purpose of each
table. I have found the schema documentation but nothing that explains the
purpose. Currently I am trying to determine the relationship of
aged_circulation to circulation. Since circulation contains records that are
older than aged_circulation I assume it isn’t what the name might imply?

Thank you.

C/W MARS conducted a review of Evergreen after 5 years of use. My board asked
that I share this review with the Evergreen Community because they felt it
might benefit Evergreen users. The link to the report is below. Please be
aware that the libraries in our network were on Evergreen 2.10 when the review
was conducted.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Members of consortia--how do you give input to your leadership?

2017-07-14 Thread Murphy, Benjamin
NC Cardinal doesn’t have a Users’ Group, but we do have a Cataloging Committee
and Resource Sharing Committee, in addition to working groups as needed.
Generally suggestions filter up through those bodies, or if received through
other channels like the NC Cardinal team, are posed to those committees or
working groups to craft a recommendation. If it is a decision that all of the
libraries will need to abide by, it is voted on by the Governance Committee.

If you find it useful, our Bylaws are at:

Hello Evergreen community!

I'm the newly-elected Vice President of the Users Group of the SPARK
consortium, which provides Evergreen to over 100 libraries in Pennsylvania. We
are beginning to write our by-laws and we're wondering:

Are there any other EG UGs out there? And if so, how do they function?
If your consortium doesn't have an UG, how do you give
feedback/complaints/requests to your leadership?

Thanks in advance for your responses!
Katie

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Experience with Star printers TSP100U or TSP100GT?

2017-06-22 Thread Murphy, Benjamin
A member of the NC Cardinal consortium has asked me about the compatibility
Star's TSP100U or TSP100GT printers with Evergreen. I see from this page on the
wiki that they appear to be compatible:
https://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=faqs:evergreen_compatible_products_results_survey

Do any of you have experience with either of these printers? They're trying to
move away from Star model SP500 because of how slow it is.
