While this is true, previous versions, and one can assume 10.3, have a

I'm kinda wondering if it put the executable outside of roots path. I
know you can view where an rpm puts files using YaST's software module,

[opensuse] nvidia brightness question

2008-01-12 Thread Mike McMullin
I have (re-)installed the nVIDIA driver for Linux (December 29, 2007)
using the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run package downloaded from their
web site. I have noticed something that I'd like to either understand
or correct.
When I view an You-tube video in Linux the video tends to not be as
bright as watching the video under XP=Home on the same hardware setup.
Is this a driver issue or an X issue, and how can I resolve the
difference if at all possible.

Pardon the piggy-back on this. ACER makes a good laptop, I've got two
of them here, and they stand behind their hardware, as well as will not
void the warranty if you replatform a Windows Box into a Linux box.

Having followed your discussion on encrypting partitions, I was
actually wondering if you might not just need to fake a partition in a
file, encrypt the fake partition, and only mount that when needed? I
already have 10.3 on my laptop, and running smooth enough, so I was
pondering doing this for the stuff I need kept safe.

Having finally booted up my laptop, I can actually reply here:
madwifi-0.9.3.2-0.1x86_64.rpm openSUSE 10.3 Min Repository (OSS)
http://download.opesuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:10.3/standard

and madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.2_2.6.22.5_31-0.1x86_64,rpm

I installed these two packages, though I did download the one for xen
kernels as well.

In YaST Network Devices, Network Card shows up as AMBIT Microsystems
AR2413 802.11bg NIC
the device name is wlan-ath0 and the module used is ath_pci wth no
options. I don't remember if I actually had to restart the laptop for
it to take effect. I was trying a few things, and was busy worrying
about a job at the time so, the above is what I actually know. I hope
that some of this helps. A quick look at the sourceforge site indicates
a newer version 0.9.3.3 from Oct.17,2007 is out.

I have the Atheros chipset (I don't remember which one), on my laptop.
IIRC I required two .rpm's and to use the atheros drive when setting up
the wireless networking in YaST. If his card is like mine, he will not
need to upload any firmware.

It would be good for those of us who have Atheros' cards to post up
what we did to get our cards working. Ubuntu 6.10 when I installed it,
picked up the card and configured it, SuSE10.3 (which is on it now), did
not have the drivers for it and I had to go get them and go through a
good bit of trial and error.

If I recall correctly, you would not install a non-SuSE package using
YaST, but the software install tool.

You could try building the program using the source code for it that
you have installed, or grab the actual rpm for the executable file, it
dependsa on how much you want to learn/do.

I bought XP-Home Upgrade, at Price Costco for $119Can last year, I saw
it at Radio Shack for $200 Can and passed on the price. I only wanted
the OS for my son who insisted on Windows for his desktop system. Now I
need to learn how to make it work in my mostly Linux home network.

Note the readily available to consumer item here in the Great White

That is something that would definitely interest me, but, I have

My apologies for nit-picking here. When Windows(tm) writes the MBR,
it does not "break" the Linux install, hence Linux doesn't need to be
repaired, but to have the boot loader configured to boot Linux. One can
use Windows(tm) boot loader to boot more than one OS. I have, however,
noticed that most Linux users prefer to have GRUB or LILO handle the
booting of their systems, and they need to be given control of the boot
process, if so desired.

> Just partition your disk first with the SuSe install disk,

IIRC with XP you can use it's partitioner to create the partitions
that you will later turn over to Linux. FWIW, on my systems, I use the
Linux partitioner only on disks that do not contain a Windows(tm)
partition, I let MS deal with space that their OS will be using.

I did an install of 10.2 in that last two months. I did notice that
Evolution was requesting the password (several times over various days),
_but_ after setting the system up for updates, and doing my updates, the
patch fixing this was applied. I haven't tried it on 10.3 yet, as my

There are two fast possibilities, your bios is not set to boot from
that drive prior to booting from the hard disk, or you did not choose to
burn the disk as .iso. From k3b's tools menu, choose the "Burn DVD Iso
image" option, for the former put in a known good bootable disk and
if it won't boot from it, adjust your bios settings.

For 10.2 the DVD iso was not immediately available, and there is a
script available to take the cd iso's and create a DVD from them, it
might work with the 10.3 images.

Ken there is an answer for the required directories over on the Ubuntu
list, but of more interest is that there is a backup\migration tool for
Evolution floating around out there.

I set up a PSC 1315 for my brother no sweat under 10.2, in fact it set
itself up, the OP needs to make sure the latest hp-lip package is
installed, and use the hp=setup utility if 10.3 beta is not finding this

Did you manage to get a "fax server" for a network setup though? I
looked into it, but the instructions were too off-putting. (Rather
poorly phrased, I think, but I just want to be able to point other
systems to the fax running on my main system and have them fax from it
without doing a ton of setup work, followed by telling the others in the
network to use these new hoops in order to fax.)

I tried SLED10 and liked it, really liked it. What stopped me from
buying was (and maybe I'm wrong here) is that you pay every year so you
can get updates. The concept is fine for businesses, but for me the
home/College user, that's money I don't really want to pay.

Nice. I like the output plugin control that allows me to switch the
hardware over to my USB headset. I find that too many sounds apps make
you go hunting for a way to do it, and then disappoint you.

I've got a big HD on my main system, and I'm running 5. Two Os's on
one one hd and three are on the big drive. The one with three
partitions I set up as such: hdb1=swap,
hdb2=/ for 10.1, hdb3=/home for 10.1, then there is an extended
partition where hdb5=/ for 10.2, hdb6=/home for 10.2, hdb7=/ for
LinuxXP. I do have on hda2 a swap partition, on hda1 Windows XP, on
hda3 Ubuntu root, and on hda4 Ubuntu Home.

u
Yes to both, almost. You could always backup your /home partition to
move it to a new hard drive. Strategies for this have been discussed ad
nauseum on this list over the past 18 or so months.

> Is it a good idea to have /swap on the extended partition? Do you use the

I have my swap in a primary partition on any drive that I have a swap
on, and I have the 4 Linux's use the swap partition on hdb. I'm keeping
the one on hda there in case I remove my hdb. I'll tweak Ubuntu to use
it using a live cd to make the edit to fstab.

> How do you manage to run 3 or 4 os variants on just 4 primary partitions?

I give my heavy lifting/everyday Linux the primary partitions and use
the extended partition for checking out other releases/distros.

brains to set up a Linux_Samba test server for one of our divisions. I
hope they nail it and it moves from test to production on that side.
Our side is running Windows-2003 servers and they're being rebooted with

I fired up the sound card settings in YaST, set the master to 0,
exited it, and you're right, that had absolutely nada effect on the USB
headset (a Logitech btw, the model had been recommended in a thread

An interesting bit of logic to be sure, conversely, there are proof of
concept security models for Windows that preclude the use of AV and
mal-ware scanners, so every Windows box out there must be rock solid to
the hilt. That can be sourced to George Ou, who's description of his XP
system runs without AV and mal-ware scanners, and very limited
permissions for users other than himself.

What lies? I do get the odd die hard Windows user demanding to know
what I use for AV on my Linux box, and I tell them I don't, as Linus
Virii are yet to be found running around in the wild. Some of them use
the nice "what Anti-Virus do you have on your computer?", I tell them
Windows is AVG, and Linux is none.

At this point I would look into Yast, Sound Card, and tweak the Master
volume. You have not mentioned which version that you are running, and
I have had a few volume level fall backs on my 10.0 system, and by that
I mean the volume is set to 0 according to YaST.

the proper one.

While I m not overly familiar with that particular laptop I can make
some suggestions.
First google dv2213+webcam and see what results you get. You're webcam
is probably on the USB bus even though it is built in, so lsusb -v will
get you info on it.

Esmay-Suiza:/home/Mike/Projects/Python # lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0d62:a100 Darfon Electronics Corp. Benq Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID :
Bus 003 Device 001: ID :
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0402:5602 ALi Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID :

For me the cam is on bus 001 and is device number 003, the gold of
this info is the 0402:5602, which is the unique vendor:device
identifier. With those two numbers you can google to see what driver is
required and if it is available for openSuSE.
(Mine is currently in development.)

No that would not be a good understanding, Randall, and it would not
be a good reading of what I wrote either. Both Ubuntu and SuSE are
Linux OS's, as to their relative merits, I run both, I like both, ymmv.

When I get the disk space, and MAC ports MacOS for pure Intel use,
I'll be adding that. I've been toying around with the idea of trying
openSolaris, and perhaps one of the BSD's.
It's just questions of time, compatability and ability on my part.

Aren't those neat. :) I'm curious as to why the 3 differing Windows
installs.

The partitioning experience is one of the criterium I use when
assessing a new distro. If I have to use a Live-CD for partitioning
then the thing starts out with a strike or two against it. My
Ubuntu-6.06-LTS DVD had a bug in formatting to Reiser, but on the whole
I'm pleased with it, and I'm thinking of putting 7.04 on my son's laptop
in place of his 10.1 and wonky wireless problems.

My main system is quintuple boot, and I have SuSE handle the booting.
I just did not care for XP's, Ubuntu, or LinuxXP's booting
screen/options. I'd suggest that you have your normal OS of choice
handle booting, as this is the one that you will keep on hand the
longest.

I've never used RAID but I was under the impression that RAID 1 and
disk failure was terminal, but the ones that use parity drives allow for
the rebuilding of the data drive if one gets hosed.

I did a fast Google for HP Deskjet 3915 + driver and there are some
good results
including on for hplip, the minimum version number being 0.9.5. It
seems to use the hpijs driver. Normally hp-toolbox seems to get
installed, check under system and utilities in the SuSE menu. Also have
a truck over to the hplip site on sourceforge for more info. IIRC you
are on 10.2, so the version of hplip shipped ought to have the required
PPD file, it's just a question of finding it.

BTW if Marcus Meisner responds to this, do exactly what he says. He's
SuSE's and the lists resident printer dude.

Is this an all in one unit, i.e. Printer Scanner, Copier? If it is
then you need to use hplip, and the hp-toolbox.

About the kernel upgrade, keep an eye peeled for a new kernel in the
on-line updates, and see if it matches the version numbers listed above,
when that patch propagates through the various distros, you'll be in
business. Do you know of a kind hearted person who can partition it for
you in Windows? If so then at least it will be usable until you can do
it yourself.

Bummer. Both fdisk and YaST Partitioner require root permissions, so
this should not actually be a permissions problem, and with the drive
being seen you ought to be able to partition it.

Yes, so am I. If you had a recent copy of either Knoppix or Ubuntu
live disks, I'd suggest booting that and see if the partitioner worked
any better, or to hook it up to a Win2k + system and see if you could
get if partitioned that way. If you can choose fat32 for the format
type and then you can use it between your linux systems and other
peoples Windows systems, until such time as this error gets resolved.
There apparently is an open ticket on the kernel site about this error,
so it ought to get fixed, it's a question of whether or not you want to
wait till then.

BTW what kind (make/model) of case is the drive mounted in?

What you need to do is click on create, in the pop-up widow select sdb
by clicking on it's radio button.

This isn't your Father's fdisk ;), after creating the partition you
will need to set the file system type, 83 is normal for linux. There
are a few extra steps to the cli method.

I'm not sure about the error, but I'd venture a guess that it relates
to the partitioning.

We do not want to try mounting it at this time, that will be done
_after_ it's partitioned. Locate the /dev/evms/sdb in YaST partitioner
and click on the "Create" button to create a partition. It's a good
idea to think about how many partitions you want for this drive, based
on what you want to do with it, as well as what kind of file system
type. I'd use the same file system type as for your install, just to
keep it simple for now.

Like I said earlier, partition first then mount, and then you will be
using (assuming one partition on the disk):

mount-t auto /dev/evms/sdb1 /mnt/usb

no _to_ and sdb1 as opposed to sdb

Do you happen to have anything in your /dev directory for sda?

You want the partition to mount, not the actual disk. What you are
seeing here is that your system does not see the partitions on /dev/sdb,
and seeing as /dev/sdb1 ought to exist on the partitioned drive, it is
either not partitioned, or not connected in a way that the OS sees it.
The first thing to iron out is having it connected and powered up
properly. You will know your successful when you cycle the power on and
the SuSE hardware detection window pops up, click cancel, do not mount
it if you wish to partition it.

I have an USB enclosure for a 200G drive. I did the partitioning on
this from the command line the first time I set it up using fdisk.
Fdisk is a great tool if you know your way around partitioning, but most
folks do not, so gui tools are usually preferable. YaST has a disk
partitioning tool that is relatively easy to figure out, it's on the
system tab, partitioner. If you use that tool read the warning that
pops up, then accept it. It should have a listing of all the drives
that are attached and recognized, and a USB drive is normally (to my
knowledge) appears as /dev/sb(letter) as it appears above.

Once invoked you ought to see a description along the lines
of /dev/sd(letter) and a description of the hardware (e.g. Maxtor
model#..). The first letter used is a, the second b, etc. The two
options in the partitioner that that will be of use to you the most, are
"Create", and "Edit". Have a look at the tool, and if you have
questions, ask.

If it does not actually require any input, you could write a script
for it, put it in the /etc/init.d directory, and place the appropriate
links in the run levels that you want it run in.

Yes, at that time. You'll want to keep an eye on it. I'm waiting for
the driver on my orbit-cam, it's still a few months away from a primary
release. Love the Acer Hardware, not too happy (or unhappy) about what's
not currently supported.

Let's try seeing if we've got a supported card first. Try this link
and see if you're listed on it:

This is the result of lsmod, and ought to occur when the system loads
the wifi-driver: mad-wifi. I think we need to go back to what's being
setup in YaSt under network cards.

Which makes me wonder if one could not just create a separate
partition for the various directories that need to be encrypted, create
the directories on that encrypted partition and then link to the
encrypted directories from the unencrypted root partition? The downside
to this I think would come at time for upgrade, when one would have to
clear the encrypted directories, 'sync' over the new data, and then
re-setup the links.

There's a great deal of search-able knowledge both on various lists
archives
and magazine articles and user written how-to's. The downside to Google
is that most of us don't really have the skill to use it to the effect
that we aren't bludgeoned senseless by information that we are not

Let me know how that works. I've never tried due to the fact that
there are a few things that I want to do cli style. I would assume that
the file name would be the first parameter sent to the app, but I'm not
sure about that.

Hmmm if you have the find utils installed, try locate kio_iso, failing
that pin kio_iso ought to return which kde package you will need to
install.

BTW, the /mnt/mountiso directory has to be created prior to using the
script, which requires root privileges. I did that so that anyone on
the system could actually mount an .iso if they wanted to.

IIRC Kai does know something of programming. ;) Of course, one could
right click on the .iso file and use the open with ... and then invoke
the script, but there ought to be a conflict resolving the name due to
the extension. I know that I had a reason for forcing ?.iso, but don't
off-hand recall what it was.

Yeah the %1 takes a parameter passed to the script (the first one
actually) and assumes that it is the name of the iso file to be mounted
less it's extension. This script is actually located in the /usr/bin
directory and is invokable by any user on the system (+x has been set).
As far as invoking it from the CLI, a path to the file is only required
when the script is invoked from a directory other than the one that
the .iso is located in, yes it will have to find the .iso.

Anyone here learn a.l. by hand disassembling their basic interpreter?
Someone mentioned that this looked like an effort on the part of person
looking to learn assembly, to me that makes sense, and should signal the
"vultures" to provide some actual guidance on getting the code runnable,
and then perhaps crank over the style, which will come over time as the
person gets used to assembly language.

This is typical of python not finding the correct library to import.
It should have installed into the directory(s) that contain Python's
libraries. On my 10.0 system these are located in /usr/lib/python. I'm
wondering what version of python that you are using, it might be
possible that you have have the file correctly installed, but are
invoking the wrong version of python. Another thing is that you are one
directory up from your import directory when you are invoking this, try
copying the file down one level, or copying the library files up one
level, or better yet, copy the example files to a directory in
your /home/ and then you can blow it all away when you are done
without having to worry about any kind of corruption of the original
files. I have a /home/Mike/Projects/Python directory where I am working
through a "learn to program python" book, from here I can find all of
python's normal library files, and the new library files that came on
disk with the book, as I localed them there,
i.e. /home/Mike/Projects/Python//

Generally if you delete files from Konqueror they end up in the trash
bin, and can be restored, unless you hold the shift key while pressing
the delete key. If you issued a rm filename from hte command line, I do
not know if these can be recovered. AFAIK if you delete a file from
inside an application, it too is toast.

No ill effect from what I can tell. I have the same kernels running
on my single core desktop, and dual-core laptop, both AMD CPU's.

The benefit to this is that the signal to noise ratio will drastically
improve. I've been trashing 99+% of stuff coming through do to the
noise content.

I honestly don't know, did it come with the install disks, or has
HP/Compaq created an image that resides in the first (hidden) partition
that you can do a restore from? I haven't heard anything on M$ tweaking
NTFS, or did they ship Vista with the new(?) WinFS?

For testing purposes turn off WEP on the router and try again. Also see if
you can copy the WEP key to a text file, and copy that over to the wireless
device, and copy/paste
it into the dialog box.

At bootup look for the options line at the bottom of the screen and
put the following on it:
init 3
This will get you single user no-graphical mode. Log in as root.
Simplest way is to invoke sax2 and redo your video card configuration.
Then use:
init 5
to switch to normal run level with x-server running. You can also
manually edit the
/etc/X11/xorg.cong file and change the line with the nvidia module name
to nv, save and exit, and then issue the init 5, command and you should
have your gui back.

Are you sure about that? There are 3 WEP options when you try and
connect. Try cycling through them, and note that you use matching case
on the letters. Also I think at this point KWallet is going to fire up
to hold the info. May-hap you could give us a more concise view of what
is occouring.

I've been using my laptop when I get the chance. One thing that I
have noticed is that there are certain venues (Hilton Hotel's in the
states to name one) that offer free wireless, but seem to require you to
use IE to authenticate with.

IIRC Atheros is better served by mad-wifi. Go the the opensuse site
and search for mad-wifi and/or Atheros. There is adequate info there to
allow you to get it up and running under 10.2.

Unfortunately you would need a patent lawyer to go through all of M$'
claims. If you've followed any M$ patent discussions over the past few
years, you would see that they've been applying for any and everything,
including that thing that we know as sudo. Oddly enough Bill Gates is
on record as talking about how much WinNT was like Unix. So as far as
Ballmer's claims go, take them with as much salt as you can heft.
