Hi Hemant,

Many thanks. You are right. It's all about the
variable environments. Now it works fine.

Have nice day.

Host concurrent program whom call ar60runb

2004-01-21 Thread Kader Ben
Hi Listers,

I'have registered host concurrent program on Oracle
11.5.9 as TEST.prog which include one line to execute
the ar60runb on command line. Unfortunately this is
does not work for me. The problem is the TEST.prog can
execute any other command or script (shell, Perl,...)
but not ar60runb which I can execute independently.

Could you please help to resolve this problem?

Thanks,

Ben

RE: 9iAS - SSL certificate renewal and wallet manager

Hi

I answered my own question. The wallet manager allows you to import
the renewal certificate and then remove the old certificate and the
ssl connections just keep on working.

Hi

My SSL certificate is going to expire and I need to renew it.
I am running 9iAS 9.0.3 on Solaris8. All the documentation
seems to be about setting up the original certificate and I
can't find anything on renewals. Has anyone done this?
I have requested a new certificate from Entrust using the
wallet manager. Do I just import the new certificate? Will
the wallet manager overwrite the old one or do I have to
remove it first? Thanks in advance,

Hi Faan,

Thanks Faan for this effectively critical point. Like
you I have faced this problem after applying some
patch (FND patches on 11.5.7) and since I have standby
database as emergency environment. It was big problem.
I wrote a scripts to detect such events and I read
some metalink docs that said Oracle will leave these
unrecoverable options on their future patches.

The database must be mounted and in exclusive mode in order
to turn archiving on.

You need to do a: startup mount exclusive

then: alter database archivelog

then: alter database open

Ben,

You need to implement the table to assign storage attributes to it. This
can be done either in the Ron or Db Designer where you are at.

In Db Designer/DbAdmin tab, expand the database|Users|spcific
User|Schema|Table Implementations entry. Click the green plus to implement
a table in this area, and you should see the properties attribute pop up.
Optionally right click on the Table Implementations selection and select
"Create Table Implementations".

Good Luck!

rename data file on standby database

2003-09-03 Thread Kader Ben
Hi Listers,

I have standby database working fine (until now!). I
have renamed one datafile on the primary database and
I'm wondering if I have to do the same thing on the
standby database to reflect the structure change.
I have renamed the file yesterday and the standby
database stil recovering incoming archives without any
error but the data file renamed on the primary
database is on the its original location on the
standby database.

Many thanks for your help,

RE: median function

2003-06-10 Thread Ben
Title: median function

here
is a note from the list from awhile aback:

Since
this subject was brought back up, I thought maybe some would be interested
in the following. I've never had a need to calculate a median, but, I knew
Celko's SQL for Smarties had a few variations and examples from various
people, each with caveats. And then there were differences between what he
termed statistical and financial mean, and some other things as well.
Anyway, a google search turned up another Celko solution. And this one also
brings up the concept of weighted median.

Here
is his example, http://www.intelligententerprise.com/db_area/archives/1999/992004/celko.shtml
,  modified by me to use the  standard EMP table's SAL column:

SQL> SELECT AVG(DISTINCT x.sal)   2    FROM
(SELECT F1.sal
3    FROM emp F1,
emp F2   4
GROUP BY F1.empno, F1.sal
5  HAVING SUM(CASE WHEN
F2.sal = F1.sal
6
THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)
7  >= ABS(SUM(CASE WHEN
F2.sal < F1.sal THEN 1
8
WHEN F2.sal > F1.sal THEN -1
9
ELSE 0 END)))  10
X  11  /

AVG(DISTINCTX.SAL) --

1550

The
link above goes into some detail regarding the logic behind the query and
how his query finally reached the form above. I may never need to do a
median, but, this subject has been a good opportunity for learning. I've
tested the above with even, odd, multiple occurences of SAL, null,s etc. It
seems to work, but, everyone have a whack at it if you like.

I'm attempting to write a query to calculate the median
of a column of numbers.
The first solution I came across was
Select avg(col1) MEDIAN from ( select
rownum row1, col1 from a where col1 in (select col1 from a )) a where a.row1 in ( select floor(count(*)/2 +.5) from a )   or a.row1 in ( select ceil(count(*)/2+.5)
from a )
This does too many FT scans (4) of table a, so I tried to
write a simpler version using the analytical
functions.
I have gotten as far as
 SELECT col1  FROM
 (  SELECT col1
 , row_number() OVER (ORDER BY col1) AS r  , CEIL(COUNT(col1) OVER () /2) m  FROM
a  )  WHERE r =
m
However, this only works for an odd number of values.
IIRC, if an even number of values is present, the median
is defined as the average of the two middle-most
numbers.
Before I spend much more time on this, has anybody already
written one ?

RE: Oracle DB Upgrade TO DO LIST

2003-06-04 Thread Ben
Ken,

Jared is probably right as far as a checklist for the actual upgrade.
A test run through will probably highlight any problem areas.

After the upgrade there are a number of things that usually need to be
checked/modified/recompiled (of course it depends on how you upgrade).
Here is a list that I found useful. Please add to it if you wish.

- ODBC connections
- applications
- DBA scripts in SQL, PERL, etc.
- SQL*LDR jobs
- regular imports, exports, snapshots
- FTP's of data to be loaded/imported/exported
- database links
- backups
- scheduled jobs
- scripts that mail logs or reports
- alert log check scripts
- parameter files (*.ora)
- metadata for third party query tools

Ken,

The best to do list will be the one you create yourself.

You can do this by reviewing the migration manual, and determining
which steps are appropriate for your environment.

Subject:Oracle DB Upgrade TO DO LIST

I am looking at a project to upgrade a number of Oracle development, test
and production DB's to newer releases. I have reviewed Oracle's list of
tasks from OTN. I would like your feedback on other tasks, etc. that
should be included. Is there a list somewhere on the web that gives a
comprehensive list of tasks that need to be accomplished and "gotchas"?

How do you document your databases

2003-03-20 Thread Ben
Hi

How do you document your databases? The only DBA tool that I have at my
disposal is Designer but I have not used it yet. Is it adequate to
completely document the life cycle of a database design? I am sure it can
create and retain pretty straight forward DDL. Does it allow build levels?
What do you do with the DBA tinkering - things like which tablespace a table
goes into, storage clauses, parameters like PCTFREE, PCTUSED,etc? Where do
you document your pfile?

What about when you have to alter a table after the database is in
production?
Do you document the alter script itself or do you go back and change the
original DDL?

Then there are things like SQL*LDR control files, security (all the grants)
and all the auditing that has been turned on. Where do you keep all this
stuff? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ben

Thnks Michal for your input,

All seems right for me:
SQL> show parameter job

NAME TYPEVALUE
 ---
--
job_queue_interval integer 90
job_queue_processes integer 2

Michal I cannot put next_date to 'sysdate+1/86400'
because this date will never be reached since I use
ALTER SYSTEM SET FIXED_DATE = sysdate+deta

Where the delta is the incremental time to simulate
pseudo-time in the future. And the main objective of
the procedure to do.

Fixed_date and dbms_job

2003-03-13 Thread Kader Ben
Hi Listers,

I'm simulating the date in future with fixed_date.
I wrote procedure to be called every seconde through
dbms_job to increment the fixed_date.

I did that dbms_job.submit(:job_num, 'myprocedure;',
sysdate, 'sysdate');

the dba_jobs table show me the right interval un
next_date:

BROKEN ST_DATE LAST_SEC NEXT_DATE NEXT_SEC INTERVAL
N 13-JUN-03 00:00:00 13-JUN-03 17:50:06 sysdate

And the sysdate is:
13-JUN-2003 17:50:06

But the job never execute.

Could you please give me hint how to resolve this
problem?

Thanks you,

Ben

All I can speak for are the schools in my area (Dallas, TX). A few of the
community colleges teach Oracle and SMU teaches it, but in each case, it is
continuing education, not part of a Computer science degree. It's the same
class as at Oracle education, i.e. no grades, not tests, everyone passes
that shows up.

But then, I'm not sure a degree in Computer science should target a
particular vendors product.

For web work. MySQL is very popular (Together with PHP).

For everything else, Access is usually the intro if developing dektop

You never see Oracle as the intro DB in any school (a real school as

in University, College, High School not those $$$ making diploma mills).

re-directing database connection requests

Is there a way to re-direct incoming database connection requests

requires the database to be running in MTS mode. Is there another way?

Re: Parallel Server Option = TRUE

Hi Pablo,

There is no known problem if you have installed OPS
even thought actually you don't use it, there is also
no impact on DML_LOCK if your data are accessed by
only one instance.
Comment out PARALLEL_SERVER if is in your parameter
file.

RE: Installing iAS 9.0.2.0.1

2002-10-28 Thread Ben
If you only want it to do web apps it's not a
problem. We installed the OC4J and web cache
portion on Solaris in an hour. Very easy.
Needed it for version 1.3 of Java.
Next we will tackle the full install with the
infrastructure which will allow the use of Portal,
Reports and Discoverer. Expecting big time headaches
based on the documentation and the fact that we want
to use iPlanet not the OID for our LDAP.

Can 9iAS Rel2 still do SSLv2 40bit encryption?

2002-10-21 Thread Ben
Hi

We have 9iAS Rel.1 running 40-bit and 128-bit encryption. We
are migrating to Release2 and I am wondering if it will still
allow 40-bit. The security guide says:

Clients can only connect with one of the specified protocols:

SSLv3 - SSL version 3.0

or

All - SSL version 3.0 and any other version supported
by Oracle products.

What do they mean by any other version supported? Are they
just leaving the door open for SSLv4?

RE: copying all schemas except sys

2002-09-20 Thread Ben

Hi

Well my import choked on SYS.DBMS_REPCAT_UTL so I just assumed
that there was SYS schema stuff in the full export. I see now that
the import must execute this package. This package was having a
problem with the fact that the exported global name did not match that of
the instance I was importing into. How do I avoid this problem? I
don't want to have to delete the replications stuff out of the instance
before I export.

Hi

Starting with Oracle8i there is a problem with using full export
and full import to re-create a database. The import coughs up a
lot of errors due to the SYS schema (replication and help objects).
How do people go about moving all the schemas from one instance to
another without manually creating all the schema owners in the
new instance and then exporting/importing every schema by name.
What I want is an "ignore sys schema" parameter in the export
utility.

Thanks,

re: copying all schemas except sys

Maybe I answered my own question. If I do the full export
as another dba user (not sys, system) then hopefully I will
not get the sys schema in the export.

What I want is an "ignore sys schema" parameter in the export
utility.

Thanks,

Ben

Oracle 9iAS Rel.1 upgrade to 9iAS Rel.2

2002-09-06 Thread Ben

Hi

Has anyone upgraded from 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2 to the new Release 2?
Is there a migration path or should you start from scratch
with Rel.2 as it is significantly different (what with the
infrastructure stuff and all). I have heard that migrating
any Portal stuff is nigh on impossible. Any other comments.

Thanks,

hi, go to $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin, ls sp*, you will find the sqls
that needed by statspack. and vi spdoc.txt, you will know what statspack is.
There is some paper on statspack performance tuning on otn. and
donald burleson also wrote a book on statspack: oracle statspack high
performance tuning, your can get it and take a look.
Good luck.
If you are in china, there is chinese translation already.

Hi All,

connect to the other instance.
I'll appreciate any suggestion.

creating 9i database and port 2481 conflict

2002-06-24 Thread Ben

Hi

I have a data server which is running several 8i instances (8.1.7) with
Jservers
on Solaris8. I installed 9i version 9.0.1 and created a 9i database
instance.
All instances and listeners were shut down when I did this. So far all went
well.
Then I used the database config assistant to clone the 9i database by
creating it's
template and changing the dbname and file names. When I try to create this
new 9i
database using the template I get the following error:

ORA-29532: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception:
java.net.BindException: Unable to bind endpoint, status =
12542<0.0.0.0,2481>

during the java install. Oracle support says I should just shut down my
listener
and run the create and it will work as it is a conflict over the GIOP port
2481.
Has anyone managed to do this without shutting the listener down?

Thanks,

Ben

Oracle 9iAS Rel.2 requires OID

2002-06-06 Thread Ben

Hi

Just browsing through the documentation for 9iAS 9.0.2 and I am a bit
surprised.
It looks as though you have to install the so called Infrastructure
(SingleSignOn,
Oracle Internet Directory and a metadata repository) if you want to use
Portal
or Discoverer. If you are just running web apps then you don't need the
Infrastructure.
We are using 9iAS R1 for web apps and taking a look at Portal and
Discoverer.
But if they require the OID then I doubt we will use them. Oracle appears to
be forcing you to become an all-Oracle shop. Why am I surprised?

I have been trying, like you wouldn't believe, to get a list of
new features in 9iR2. I have run into stone wall after stone wall.
I think there has been some internal confusion and debate over what
to include in 9iR2, based on some of what I've heard. I've even
heard that Logical Stand-by will not be in 9iR2, but I can not
verify this.

Looking hard, will report if I find anything.

The big thing that I'm looking forward to is the logical standby database.
This will allow you to apply logs between different versions of Oracle.
Should allow us to drastically reduce downtime during upgrades.

Can you expand on your experience?

I don't know if Oracle fixed the iFS memory requirements, it used to be
brutal.

2G per two protocols with two concurrent sessions, if I remember correctly.
That adds up quickly.

I asked during the Oracle Technology Day here, and was told that it still
requires a massive amount of memory server-side.

Less than before, but still requires much memory.

I like the idea very much, indexing information like e-mails would prove
invaluable in some organizations.

Hi All,

Oracle iFS is, of course, much slower in standard operations, such as file
copying, saving and retrieving, but...
It has really great features for searching as well as more protocols to
access files (smb, nfs, http, webdav, and more).
Another nice feature is customized "smart" file system, where you can
program it's behaviors such as presenting the same data in different formats
as needed (dxf as bmp or jpg when user don't have dxf viewer, for example).
It may be integrated well with Oracle Workflow. iFS implements "out of the
box" file versioning and chek-in, check-out.

All backup problems go to database backup. However, it is not so flexible as
regular file backups - it's questionable to restore only one file from the
past and so on.

Samba is free. iFS is included free of charge in Oracle Server (both EE and
SE).

Samba works on *NIX. iFS works on both Windows NT and UNIX/LINUX.

In other words, need a regular file system - go with Samba. ;)

Regards.

RE: Two instances with same name on the same Server

Hi

This could happen if you have Oracle installed twice on the box.
The same SID could be started up from each of the binaries.

Hello Folks,

I was teaching DBA stuff to a newbie, and I had him play with an Oracle
7.3.4 instance on an old HP box. I was teaching him about oradebug, ipcs
and how to associate shared memory segments with an Oracle Instance. After
some time, he came back and said there were 2 Oracle instances with the
same name running.

I did a ps -ef|grep pmon and was indeed surprised to find two process with
the same SID running. An ipcs showed two Oracle Id's. I connected to the
instance, and shut it down. It now showed only one pmon process, which I
was not able to connect to, and had to kill all the background process. He
does not remember the exact sequence of steps that he did. I tried to
retrace the steps from whatever he said, but to no avail. I brought up the
instance, did an ipcsrm, and tried to bring up another instance, all to
nothing. 7.3.4 is the only Oracle version installed on this box. Any
thoughts on this? I am curious to know.

Serious import problem (help!)

2002-04-25 Thread Conrad, Ben
Title: Serious import problem (help!)

Folks,

I've been exporting data from the production db's every night for over a year.  We use these exports to import into the test db's that we have setup in the office.  Well, starting yesterday I am no longer able to import successfully into any of our 8.1.6 instances.

The exp/imp are being done with the same version (Export file created by EXPORT:V08.01.06 via conventional path, Import: Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production on Thu Apr 25 14:19:59 2000) and we have not upgraded Oracle (production or test) ever since it's been installed.  Our exp files are around 5GB (on NTFS filesystem) when exported, I then gzip (switching to bzip2 soon) the files and ftp them off for unzipping and importing into another 8.1.6 w2k server.  The thing that dazzles me is that nothing has changed except that we moved into a new office (new IP address space) this week.  Were using WINS to resolve machine names (eg oradb2) and that's working fine (always has).

75% of the tables in Schema A load up fine, the other 25% in Schema A are random but seem to be breaking on the largest tables.

These are the import errors I get on multiple instances and different DB machines, very strange.

Jack,

I asked this question last week. I got one reply saying that it was okay
to install and build new databases with another version running in
a different Oracle home (from Rachel I think). I assume she had tried
it out but I don't know for sure.

SQLLDR core dumping

2002-04-18 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I installed 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2 on Solaris 8. All went well except
the Portal component failed. When I tried to re-run the
opca (portal configuration assistant) it failed on a segmentation
fault in SQLLDR. Oracle support seems to be stumped by this.
Has anyone else run into this? Thanks,

Close instances while installing new versions or creating new databases

2002-04-16 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

The install guides that I have seen specify that you shut down all
instances before any installations.

Is it really necessary to close all instances and listeners on a server
when you are:

a)Installing a new version of Oracle in a new $ORACLE_HOME

OR

b)Creating a new database under the new $ORACLE_HOME

What about when creating a new database under an existing
$ORACLE_HOME which has open instances.

Thanks.

Installing Discoverer4i with Oracle9iAS

2002-04-10 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I am having trouble with this install. First a warning. If you are
installing this on Solaris get the 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2 version as the
1.0.2.2.1 version would not even start up the Discoverer install
for me (and I did have PsuedoColor set on my emulator as it uses
the old installer in motif mode).

Anyway the Disco install says it worked but I cannot get it going.
My locator.log is complaining about being unable to bind a preference
object. I noticed one error in the pref.txt file - the IP address did
not get set. After looking on Metalink it seems that the install makes
a lot of mistakes in setting up parameter files. Has anyone successfully
installed this who would like to share their pref.txt, jserv.properties,
discoviewer.properties, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

RE: Differences between Oracle JDBC thin and thick drivers

2002-04-09 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I believe the difference is that the OCI drivers use SQL*Net
or NET8 or whatever they call it now, whereas the thin driver
does not require SQL*Net on the client machine.

Hello all,

I have a question concerning the Oracle JDBC thin vs. thick drivers
and how they might affect operations from an application perspective.

We're in a Solais 8/Oracle 8.1.7.2 environment. We have several
applications on several servers connecting to the Oracle database.

For redundancy, we're looking into setting up TAF (transparent
application failover). Currently, some of our apps use the Oracle
JDBC thin drivers to talk to the database, with a connection
string that like this:

jdbc:oracle:thin:@host:port:ORACLE_SID

In a disaster recovery mode, where we would switch the database
from one server to another, the host name in the above string
would become invalid. That means we have to shut down our application
servers and restart them with an updated string.

Using the Oracle OCI (thick) driver though, allows us to connect
to a Net8 service instead of a specific server:

jdbc:oracle:oci8:@NET8_SERVICE_NAME

Coupled with the FAILOVER=ON option configured in Net8, it is
then possible to direct a connection from the first server to
the failover database on another server. This is exactly what
we would like to do.

My question is, from an application perspective, how is the Oracle
thick driver different from the thin driver? If everything
else is "equal" (i.e. the thick driver is compatible with the
app servers) would there be something within the the thick/OCI
driver that could limit functionality vs. the thin driver?

My understand, which obviously is sketchy, is that the thick
driver is a superset of the thin driver. If this is the case,
and for example if all database connections were handled through
a configuration file with the above OCI connection string, then
theoretically the thick driver should work.

If anyone has any info on this that they can share, it would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lou Avrami

Hi friends,

I need your advise on the following question. I
have DB on 8i and I want create new one on another
machine with 9i.
I thought do the following steps:

1 - Install oracle 9i on a new machine
2 - make full export of the 8i DB
3 - import it on the new one (9i)

So before I proceed I need your input. Am I correct
with these steps? There is something wrong?

Many thanks for you,

RE: How to use Email server in 9iAS.

2002-04-04 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

What couldn't you download from OTN and why. OTN has the following
manuals which I downloaded - Planning Guide, Installation Guide,
Administration Guide and Developers Guide.
I toyed with the idea of setting up the Email Server for mass
mailings (not spam!) with personalized text from an Oracle
database. However I have not had a chance to pursue it yet and
it does not seem to be very widely used. Right now I am just
using SendMail and utl_smtp to solve my problem.

RE: Hundreds of schemas in one instance?

2002-03-13 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

The assumption is that every user of this system will have totally unique
requirements. There will be no data sharing and no commonality of purpose.
As far as alternatives I am not even thinking about multiple instances.
Other alternatives include - many schemas and one tablespace, or many
schemas and an arbitrary number of tablespaces, or an arbitrary number
of schemas matched to an arbitrary number of tablespaces, or one schema
for all users using fine grained access control (thanks for the idea
Jack it sounds quite useful).

Peter: All users would be equal and no critical systems will be housed
on this instance, but backup and recovery is definitely complicated by
having so many data files and tablespaces. By the "opposite direction"
do you mean only one tablespace.

Jared: The benefit is isolation. As much as possible keep the users from
affecting each other. Performance effects are unavoidable but separate
tablespaces would keep one user from gobbling up all the available
disk space. Will definitely have to watch out for the data dictionary
filling up the SYSTEM tablespace and bringing everything to a screeching
halt.

Hi

Our university wants to set up a server that will provide groups
on campus with a standard set of services for web hosting, data
collection or whatever they want to do. As much as possible each
user should have their own isolated chunk of the server.
An Oracle database will sit in the background to provide whatever
database services they need. My thought is to go with one instance
with a unique schema, including separate tablespaces/datafiles, for each
user.

Some of the pros for this are:
- easy set up for new users
- easy software upgrades
- simplified tuning, backups, monitoring, auditing
- user isolation, especially disk space usage
- multiple instances would use far more memory

Some cons are:
- everyone must use the same release of the software
- database down time affects everyone
- might run into system maximums, for example max. number of datafiles
- an enormous SYSTEM tablespace

Has anyone had to this kind of thing? Any comments or suggestions?

TIA,

Ben

SSL and non-SSL requests on same Apache server in 9iAS?

2002-03-04 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I want to host SSL and non-SSL requests on one physical server
running one 9iAS.

After installing 9iAS the httpd.conf file specifies by default
that it is listening on port . Later on in httpd.conf it
has an SSL directive that says it's listening on port 80 and 443.
Does this mean that this one Apache server can service non-SSL
requests on and SSL requests on 443 at the same time?

There is a document on Metalink(135231.1) that describes how to run two
Apache servers in one 9iAS home. Again what is not clear to me
is whether or not one could be handling SSL and the other non-SSL.

Anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? I may also be asked
to host 40-bit and 128-bit encryption on the same web site. Again any
recommendations?

Thanks.

command history in SQLPLUS not working on Solaris

2002-03-01 Thread Conrad, Ben
Title: command history in SQLPLUS not working on Solaris

Does anybody know how to get the up-arrow command history working in sqlplus running on Solaris?  I've tried running sqlplus under /bin/ksh and /user/local/bin/tcsh and the results are the same as shown below.

SQL> select sysdate from dual;

SYSDATE
-
01-MAR-02

SQL> ^[[A

I'm used to sqlplus under the W2K command prompt, it just works perfectly in that environment.

Thanks,

Bjørn -

I remember the joys of Version 3. There was also the fun screen generator
program where you had to decide where everything was going by using its
character position and you had to enter that by hand. The first pass at
most screens was interesting. One of the users referred to UFI as "User
Surly Interface"

Bjorn, you old coot, you've got me beat. I do remember the UFI prompt
though... User Friendly Interface... and the "real geeks" would program
their own SQL*Plus environment using HLI (now OCI) with the OROL option
which would allow the rollback of a single statement rather than a whole
transaction. Now, in my day, we had fire but we had to make our own coal
and we kept warm on the hides of old terminals that used to roam the plains.
What were things like in your day?

There must be somebody beside myself remembering version 3, which did not
have read consistency - the great new feature of version 4. In 3, doing

UFI> insert into emp select * from emp;

would cause anything from having 28 rows in emp till having and endless loop

in the kernel only finishing when your database file ran full...

Yep - we are some old bitter men around here...

RE: Oracle 9i installation Java RunTime Environment was not found.

2002-01-24 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

The
history for this question is incomplete but I will add this thought
anyway.

When
installing on AIX boxes Oracle will not install java due to license
restrictions.
I am
not sure if your error is during installation or after. The HTTP server may not
work
because there was no jre or jdk in $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/. I had to
put a soft link in
to my
/usr/jdk where I had installed java. Then everything worked.
Hope
this helps.

Import taking up too much room with local managed tablespace

2002-01-17 Thread Conrad, Ben
Title: Import taking up too much room with local managed tablespace

Hi,

I created a tablespaces in a test database to be locally managed with an extent size of 20544K.  A normal database import usually will fill a datafile with 5.8GB of data (on a dictionary managed tblspace) but with the local it has run out of space with the (2) 6GB files that I allocated to it.  I noticed that during the import the datafiles were filling up quite fast (too fast).  Data file 1 was filling up about 4x as fast as data file 2 during the import.

Why did this happen?  FYI, I have the compress=y set on the export if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

Ben.

Oracle8i and the Jserv demos

2002-01-17 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I have installed Oracle 8.1.7.0 on an AIX 4.3 box and the Jserv
demos do not work. I looked at the jserv.log and it seems to
not be finding the java executables. I downloaded Java.rte for AIX
from IBM and put it in the $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/jdk/bin directory
but it still doesn't work. I am not too familiar with AIX so can
anyone explain to me how and where to install java on an AIX box.
I would open a tar but we renewed our licenses and ever since I have
been unable to get registered properly with MetaLink.

Thanks,

Ben

RE: Oracle8i and LDAP

2002-01-15 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

Well I have partially answered my own question. I see in the Net8 manual
that it can use an LDAP server to replace Oracle Names and lookup connect
strings for service names. However I am still not sure if Oracle8i can
authenticate a username and password in an LDAP. If it can, does anyone know
how it queries the LDAP.

What I really want to know is whether Oracle has any specific requirements
that an LDAP server would need to be able to handle. This will help us
choose an Oracle compatible
LDAP.

I have found a chart indicating that OID is included with Oracle9iAS EE.

Does Oracle8i come with any built in LDAP functions or
do you have to write your own functions to search and

Does the Oracle Internet Directory come with Oracle8i
or is purchased separately?

Thanks.

Oracle and LDAP servers

2002-01-09 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

In reading MetaLink I have come up with the following list of LDAP
servers that are certified for use with Oracle.

in 8.1.7 - OID, NDS, Active Directories and iPlanet

in 9i - OID, Active Directories

Can anyone update this?

When they say an LDAP is certified for use with Oracle does this
mean that the Oracle Internet Directory C API and PL/SQL API(dbms_ldap)
will work against them? Or does it just mean that the OID can sync to it.

My real question is if I want to use iPlanet or some such beast how do I
identify,
and authorize Oracle database users?

Thanks,

Ben

Oracle9iAS and proxy servers

2002-01-08 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

I have used Oracle8i but I am new to the Oracle9iAS world.

I would like to set up a proxy server outside a firewall
which routes to an Oracle9iAS server inside the firewall.
Can the proxy server just be a basic Apache install, or are
their benefits/requirements to using 9iAS (maybe the core
or minimal edition) as the proxy?

Can anyone point me at some documentation on this topic, as
nothing came up on my MetaLink search except numerous references
to the "Proxy log on failed" problem.

Thanks,

Ben

Speaking of the system clock, here's something interesting that I stumbled
across a few years back...

Background: For those of you who may not know, the Julian calendar was
abandoned by England, in favor of the Gregorian calendar, in 1752 because of
date discrepancies. To facilitate this, September 3 - 13 were eliminated.
This is actually reflected in UNIX (well, Solaris anyway) by issuing the
'cal 1752' command and looking at the month of September:

JulAugSep
 S M Tu W Th F SS M Tu W Th F SS M Tu W Th F S
  1 2 3 4 1 1 2 14 15 16
 5 6 7 8 9 10 112 3 4 5 6 7 8 17 18 19 20 21 22 23
12 13 14 15 16 17 189 10 11 12 13 14 15 24 25 26 27 28 29 30
19 20 21 22 23 24 25 16 17 18 19 20 21 22
26 27 28 29 30 31 23 24 25 26 27 28 29

More info. on why the switch over occurred is available at
http://www.bicknell.net/books/pc1981/p_calender.htm
<http://www.bicknell.net/books/pc1981/p_calender.htm> , for those of you
with morbid curiosity.

Anyway - I was doing some Y2K testing a few years back, and playing with
NLS_DATE_FORMAT queries when I learned this little tidbit. I decided to
test the Oracle date formats because - hey - they'll be okay because they're
based on Unix, right?

Wrong: Issue the following query:

select sysdate
,add_months(sysdate,-2988)
,add_months(sysdate,-2988) - 10
from dual;

And see the following results:

SYSDATE ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,- ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-

19-DEC-2001 10:07:02 19-DEC-1752 10:07:02 09-DEC-1752 10:07:02

The third column represents a date which, technically, does not exist. : )

Oracle client compatibility with Windows XP

2001-11-30 Thread Ben Poels

Hi

According to Metalink note 161546.1 you need at least the 9.0.1
Oracle client for Windows XP. We are currently using the 8.1.7
client to go against 8.1.7 databases and 7.3.4 databases. Does
anyone know of any issues when you use the 9 client against
7.3.4 databases?

Thanks,

RE: Latch 'parallel query qref latch'

2001-06-15 Thread Ben Jones

Jon,

Thanks for the email. My next question is fairly obvious...I'm getting a
"lot" of waits on this latch (up to 5% of all waits) - how do I tune it ?
(We've got a pretty typical environment here, a few big tables with parallel
degree 4, on a 2 cpu box with 2G of RAM, and only a couple of end users
doing big queries)...

Any guidelines (from anybody) would be much appreciated...

TIA
Ben

skipping the java.sh step in database create

2001-04-05 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

If you are not using anything to do with Java is it then
safe to skip running the java.sh script that dbassist
creates during database creation in Oracle 8.1.7?
This step takes forever and uses a lot of System tablespace.

If you have access to Metalink there is a good article there (Doc. 69642 or
just put your subject in search), which lists all different causes why this
might happen audit dir being full is one of them, ORACLE_HOME and/or SID set
inapropriatelly, and a number of others.

RE: Can Oracle7 and Oracle8 co-exist?

2001-02-26 Thread Ben Poels

Hi Scott,

Nice to hear from you again. I am migrating several
warehouses on the same server from 734 to 817. If I
use a separate owner then I won't have to worry about
running different profiles when I sign on. (heh I'm
getting older with some gray hairs and I am liable to
forget which set of databases I'm working on). I also
can set up separate cron jobs under the different
owner sign-ins and easily migrate one warehouse at a time.
I don't really see any drawbacks to using different
owners even if it isn't a requirement.

Ben,
This is no problem. They don't need to have different owners. If you
are running Oracle Applications 10.7, and you want to use an Oracle 8i
instance to house it, then you must do this type of install. You will
have 2 Oracle homes, each with it's own database listener and all
associated files. They will be installed in separate directories, by
default. You will need to have a way to setup your environment when you
login to pick the Oracle home you want to use and setup all of the
environment variables correctly.

Can Oracle7 and Oracle8 co-exist?

2001-02-23 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I want to install Oracle 8.1.7 on the same
AIX 4.3.2 box which is already running
Oracle 7.3.4.5. I will use a separate Oracle
owner and Oracle home for the new 8.1.7 software.

Has anybody had any problems with these two

I have them both installed now but before
I spend a lot of time trying to break it I

final word on 8.1.7 install and java?

2001-02-16 Thread Ben Poels

Hi,

I did not really see a comprehensive answer on the
java questions involving 8.1.7 installs. I installed
8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.2 and the 1.1.8 jre was installed.
The install asked for a location for the JDK.
I just created an empty /opt/java directory with another
telnet session, hit continue and it happily carried on.
I think I just have to install JDK in this directory
now and all will be well.
Is this true?
