John [Waddington] asked : Does anyone know who is the Ward referred to in
Stanhopea wardii named by Lindley in 1838?

Possibly, E. Ward, English orchid enthusiast and collector.

[OGD] Vanilla / cooperatives [Madagascar]

2007-11-08 Thread viateur . boutot

Acrolophia barbata is a naturally occurring Cape orchid.
It's the rarest of its genus, which occurs from the Cape Peninsula to the
Eastern Cape.

Populations of this orchid are generally small, comprising only a few
plants which are pollinated by a small bee.
... A barbata has a sweet scent, which probably attracts the bee.

... The plant has 65 blossoms...
it was found on private land...

Author William Liltved, who is writing a book about Cape orchids...

[OGD] Paph hermannii

2007-11-08 Thread Rick A. Barry
Iris,

Paph hermannii is a recognized species from Viet Nam. The 'x' designation
indicates a natural hybrid. P. hermannii has been reputed to be a natural
hybrid, usually between Paph henryanum and some other species. It is not
available in the U.S. without accompanying documents, though it has been
available in the black market for many years.

[OGD] Dry seasons: Byrne, baby, Byrne

2007-11-08 Thread Oliver Sparrow
Simplificar es el arte de los angeles, y el trabajo de los diabolos,
complicar.
The angel's art is to simplify, and the work of the devils' is to complicate
matters.

P O'B Quote:

But my point is that it is really tricky
trying to predict the correct dry-period rest times from gross climatic
data.
Of course it is, which is why species orchid growing is an art and not a
science. Sympatric species - Calanthes vestita and triplicata, for example -
may be in the one case deciduous and in the other, not. However, the one grows
in much more strongly drained situations and in more light than the other (in
my experience, but I'm willing - and sure to be :-] - corrected.) It needs to
drop its leaves for the drier period, whilst C. triplicata mostly gets by
intact. Again, others may differ, but I find that the deciduous Calanthes need
their rest if they are to flower, and indeed usually do so off the bare bulb.

This is, however, fine tuning. Climates can be starkly different. Singapore is
not monsoonal and whilst it get less damp from time to time, nobody would say
that it had a true dry season. However, the genuinely monsoonal areas, from
Northern Australia at one extreme to Nepal at the other have hard, harsh
seasons.

Nepal has three months of rain (June-August) sandwiched between a couple of
dampish months; and the rest is dry as a Bath biscuit, cooking to 45C on most
days in April-May below 500m. Thus central Himalayan plants need / tolerate /
are adapted to (but anyway won't flower without) a corresponding period of
dormancy.

2007-11-08 Thread John Stanley
Not adding much to the help so far offered but in Jay Pfahl's site he notes
that Ward was an English orchid Enthusiast 1800s which could mean that he
wasn't a professional and maybe not someone whose name is likely to be found in
publications. In other words, not a big orchid name (?) Jay Pfahl doesn't quote
his source but maybe a quey to him might help.

Does anyone know who is the Ward referred to in Stanhopea wardii
named by Lindley in 1838? Obviously couldn't be Frank Kingdon Ward.
Perhaps Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward of Wardian cases? I assume Lindley's
description says but I do not have access to it.

[OGD] Stanhopea wardii

2007-11-08 Thread Charles E. Bracker

For John Waddington, who asked about the identity of ³Ward² for whom the
species name of Stanhopea wardii was given (OGD Vol. 9 Issue 343):

It is difficult to find much at all, and Mario Blanco already provided the
location of the original description. However, in Jay Pfahl¹s Orchid
Species Encyclopedia, he notes that the common name is Ward¹s Stanhopea, and
that Ward was an English orchid enthusiast in the 1800s.

URL: www.orchidspecies.com/stanhopeawardii.htm

At another web site the original publication was described, and further
states that the type species was from Mexico and the name was later revised
by Conrad Loddiges.

URL: http://autrevie.com/Stanhopea/stanhopea_wardii.html

That isn¹t very much, but I hope it helps a bit. Keep searching. You may
find more.

Best wishes, and good luck.

[OGD] Dry rest

2007-11-08 Thread Marni Turkel
I have had an interested in dry rest plants for quite a few years.
About 1.5 years ago I put together a talk called Give It a Rest for
the Orchid Digest Speakers' Day. It is not an easy topic, there are
so many variables, not only in nature and from species to species,
but from one clone to another and from one greenhouse to another.

The best references for me are undoubtedly Margaret Charlie Baker's
work. Their books have been mentioned here, but they also have a
website where you can pick and choose which species you want to find
out about. Try looking at http://orchidculture.com/. There are some
sample sheets you can view for free and the others are $1.00 or less
per species. A pretty good bargain to be a better grower.

I have given this talk a number of times in the last year and a half
and I am usually asked for a list which I haven't had. This seems
like a good time to do it. I will sit down in the next week or so and
list many of the plants that I think benefit from a dry rest and post
a note here when it is ready.

Here is the link to a great map of seasonal conditions:
