[OGD] Catasetinae seed pod maturation times and new website

2008-08-30 Thread Terry A. Glancy
Hello All;
I have been off-line for most of this summer - had both knees totally
replaced (one 3-week hospital stay and one 3-month physical therapy
routine) and lots of other time consuming jobs like equipment repairs
and upgrades and constant trimming of the rare palm and bamboo nursery,
but all that walking is good therapy also.
I've also totally upgraded our website and now offer wholesale pricing
to everyone. If you have the time, I would appreciate feedback on how
you like (or dislike) the new site, how quickly it loads for you, how
well the popups display after you click on the thumbnail photos, what
you might think of the non-orchid sections in the website (tea, globally
endangered ecosystem, etc), etc.
Well - that was all off-topic. I've tried unsuccessfully to do some
Google research on how long to let seed pods hang in the Catasetinae
group of orchids. I'm primarily doing breeding in the Fdk, the Cyc, (Cyc
X Cycd), (Cyc or Cycd X Morm) type of breeding lines. I'm not doing much
straight Ctsm breeding (short shelf life when in spike), but if anyone
has that information, I'll certainly save that on my computer also.
Thank you so much --- Terry

[OGD] Aerides

2008-08-30 Thread Jay Pfahl
Hi all,
I am intrigued by the various spellings provided by various lists on the genus
Aerides. Is A multiflora [Kew] or multiflorum [w3tropicos] correct. This same
problem seems to be out there in many books as well. Hooker, Holttum, Hawkes
has it as multiflorum, Pridgeon, Seidenfadden, Comber multiflora. Was it
unclear in the past that Aerides was a feminine name and therefore newer tomes
have it feminine, older masculine? Seems to me that Latin is a fairly stagnant
language so why the unclarity? I would suspect that the feminine is correct
only because it is the more modern usage, but I want to be sure. I am working
on a lot of little glitches and mistakes within IOSPE. The mistakes are being
pointed out by some of the OGD readers so hats off to you all for the help!

[OGD] genus and genders

2008-08-30 Thread viateur . boutot
Jay [Pfahl] wrote various spellings provided... on the genus Aerides.
Is A multiflora [Kew] or multiflorum [w3tropicos] correct.

I would suspect that the feminine is correct only because it is the more
modern usage

In Latin, the gender neutral also exists.

With Aerides... it was not easy to find the right gender... now the female
is generally recongnized :

Aerides krabiénsis
[note : To determine you have to say Aerides quinquevúlnerum or Aerides
quinquevúlnera is almost impossible.
If the botanist Lindley, who described this orchid for the first time used
quinquevúlnerum as a substantive (Genetivus qualitatis) then this orchid
must still be called Aerides quinquevúlnerum, even if the genus name
Aerides is regarded as female.
Had Lindley used quinquevúlnerum as an adjective it would be Aerides
quinquevúlnera.
Essentially this refers to subtle grammatical differences - one meaning the
five-spotted Aerides, the other Aerides with five spots]

Predominantly in German literature there are some authors who regard
Aerides as neutral - they then write
Aerides multiflorum
Aerides jarckiánum

[OGD] re wetting

2008-08-30 Thread Peter
The most simple way to get you surfactants into the material you are
trying to sterilise is to use a ultrasonic cleaner for a minute before
you start the process...this will break down surface tensin and let your
sterilizing agent...with a surfactant...work into the surface of the
plant material...prolonged use will damage the stomata and the material
will die or be adversely affected
It is good to see the enthusiasm of people on the list...but often
re-inventing to wheel is a difficult road to travel.

[OGD] Dactylorhiza from Himalayas

2008-08-30 Thread Nepal Biotech
I have read couple of articles and papers that mention declining population
Dactylorhiza found in Western Himalayas including Nepal. It is mainly due to
illegal collection of tubers to be used in local and exotic medicine. I am
trying to find out the quantity of tubers that are exported or sold in local
market legally or illegally. Anyone with estimate or idea in this regard?
