Re: passive speaker for Eloquence

2009-02-02 Thread Bobcat
Hi Robert. I was wondering about getting a usb powered speaker that wasn't
also a sound card. Guess I could just get a full usb speak and disable my
on board sound card to free up resources.

Again. Just looking for a simple small solution for speech and system sound
output.

BTW: I am trying out some Creative t10 powered speakers. Darn good for the
price but to good for Eloquence. They just have to much bass.

Looking for suggestions for a passive speaker for my computer. I want a
speaker that will sound good with Eloquence, not to much bass and clear.
I

want a passive speaker to reduce cables that would always be on.

I got some cheep speakers but they weren't loud enough, even at full
volume

with the sound card I use for speech . Perhaps passive speakers will not
work with this card.

I tried some powered speakers but they tend to have to much bass, making
Eloquence sound muddy. Maybe there are some active pc speakers that would
sound better with Eloquence if I can't find a passive model.

Does the Sony PCM D50 keep the date and time when you change batteries?
Also, can batteries charge in the machine?

To bad the PCM D50 doesn't set date and time when connected to the computer
or does it? I have Sony Digital Voice Editor software for a Sony voice
recorder. It has an option to update the date and time on compatible
recorders. Sadly, my voice recorder ICD-P620 doesn't have that feature and
looses the time every time I change batteries.

I'll only say the Adobe Flash Player 9 isn't so hot under Firefox 3, but
more usable with IE7.

There's been much comment and constination here in the UK since the BBC
replaced it's Listen Again Real Based Player with the Flash based IPlayer.
No one's having a good time with it, and things like the volume control
and navigation slider aren't accessible at all.

The BBC have said they'd address this in October. October been and gone
and nothing's happened.

No idea whether screen reader vendors can do anything to improve the
situation but this Flash thing has spread like wild fire and something had
better change for the better soon.

Ray.
Max G. Swanson wrote:

With lots of audio being funneled thru Flashplayer, I trust this isn't
off-topic. The subject line says it all; I keep reinstalling Flash9, and
after one use IE7 says there's no Flash Player, at least not the latest
one.

Since the Activex controls never load right, in spite of Alt-N and the
information bar, I have two files: Uninstall Flashplayer.exe, and
Install

same. Even when rebooting between running these two, Flash just never
stays. This makes UTube and NPR both a real pain to listen to.

The owner of this machine, an early Dual-Core with XP Pro, has about the
same level of trouble with Flash9.

Adobe's heart may still be in the right place, but the flashy side of the
coin is really starting to prevail. I'd appreciate any help, and you
might send me a C/C as I'm on digest. Firefox presents much the same
Flash problem.

Re: hearing fast forward in winamp

2008-10-13 Thread Bobcat
Hi Stephen. You are probably using the Nullsoft Direct Sound output
plug-in. You find the setting in the fading tab of the plug-in
configuration window. You may need to use the screen reader cursor to find
it.Tab till you hear a list that starts with On start. Then down
arrow to on seek. Then tab again to get to the Fade on seek settings and
uncheck it.

Alternatively; you could switch to the Nullsoft wave out plug-in which
doesn't have the fade on seek setting.

I know that this should rightly go to winamp for the blind group, but
since I'm not a member, I wonder if someone on this list could direct me
to the answer.

I haven't updated winamp for some time, but I've had to reinstall with the
latest full version - 5144. However, I like to hear my audio files fast
forwarding when I press and hold the right cursor button. Winamp now seems
to have a mechanism that uses what I believe is called soft start and stop
between presses of the right cursor button so that now there is no
background noise when fast forwarding. I tend to rely on this facility to
monitor the fast forward to for example the next music segment in a
recorded radio broadcast, thus skipping past the DJ's comments, weather
forecasts, etc.

So my question is: how can I reinstate the skipping noise when I fast
forward?

Any pointers would be helpful.

Re: MP3 Playback Options

2008-09-21 Thread Bobcat
 a
factor, however other than this, I see no point in it at all. It is
 another
device to carry around. The Stream sells fairly well in North America,
 where
the smart phone culture is not well established. But on the Nokia N82 I
have, not only can I read print on the go with the KNFB Reader mobile,
 but

 I
can also play DAISY books, work with MP3 files in a very accessible and
flexible way, listen to Audible content and download podcasts right from
 the
phone. So there is no need to carry another device around with me that
 duplicates those functions.

If you don't want an accessible cell phone, then there are many portable
music playback options. The Stream is certainly worth considering and
 that
will also read DAISY and regular texts. You might even look at an iPod
Shuffle which is very easy to operate and small. This will play music and
Audible books, but not DAISY. There are many more, the Zenstone seems
 quite
popular. And let's not forget the iPod Nano, which talks now.

 Jonathan

***Well geeze Louise I only live in Norht America Where, acording to
Jahnathan, the smart phone culture is not well established.

 Freaking lol man!

I guess my n95-3G is of no use to me then right?

 Trust me folks,
Symbian offers so much to blind users but, any applications other then
talks, Moble Speak or the out ragiously priced KNFB reader, are not
 designed

with the blind user in mind. However, The Victor reader Stream is a
 fully
featured packed unit that is blind friendly! !
And, at a price point that blows away any smart phone and Screen reader
combination. Investigate battery life for example. Or look at book
 marking

and navigation features! Once you do, you will know that the smart phone
 isn't there yet!

Like mr. Mossen, I have em all! Every last one of them! some of which
 you
likely don't even know of! And what player do I pull out of the night
 stand

 at bed time?

No, it's not my smart phone! No, it's not my Pakcmate Omni! No, it's
 not
my Maestro! No, its not my ZennStone! An no, it's not my beloved
 Rockbox!
Which, I might ad, is a very close second choice as I have had all the
target players and, was involved in the beginning. Some may no me as
rocker! The inspiration behind the Voice UI!

Actually; the unit I'm pulling out every night to enjoy my digital
 content
is indeed the Humanware Victor Stream!

It really does boast a wide array of features. Everthing you want from a
book reader and a music player!
AT $300 US you absolutley can't beat it.
It doesn't feel as slick as a smart pone but it will take more pounding
 for
 sure!

More over, it won't lock up and cause you to lose your place like the
 other
 gagets.

So, Perhaps it's time you Europians took a second look cuzz you must be a
little late in jumping on the Stream culture!
 LOL!

 Rock on...rocker!

have in your play list and right click or press the applications key. You
will find a menu that should have Add to Now Playing List. Click this and
WMP will start up with that song. You can add more songs by going back to
the folder, selecting more songs and using the context key again.

Now in WMP, you want to find the now playing list. You can tab around till
it shows up but if you have Jaws; ctrl+alt+l should focus the list. If you
don't find the Now Playing list, use the view menu, Go To, Now Playing.

When the list is focused, use arrow keys to focus individual items. Use the
context menu key to bring up a menu for each item including moving up and
down in the list.

Once you have your songs in the right order, use the File Menu, Save Now
Playing List as option to save your play list. Note: you could have started
with a blank Now Playing list which is also in the file menu before doing
anything else to save time.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Got some of the Gyration buttons worked out on my own. I have the
play/pause, stop, prev and next track, , volume, and mute buttons sussed
out. Also found the internet, email, and search buttons. There are a few
buttons that don't do anything right now. Not sure how one assigns them
with the Gyration software. The software tools don't seem to Jaws friendly.

It looks like Switch Sound File converter from
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html will do what you want. When you
download it, you'll get a 14 day trial of the full software. After 14
days, it'll continue to work in a more limited fashion. From looking
through the FAQ, it looks like it'll still convert from OGG in the free,
more limited, version. I haven't tested this myself.

Subject: Fwd: Total Recorder V7 just keeps getting better

 From: Dane Trethowan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: VIP-L Mail List [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi Everyone!

Well to be honest, I don't have much call for my Trashbox PC these
days but this application certainly makes the PC worth the while using.

Total Recorder v7 expands on the theme of inovation which was started
with V6, some ground breaking features introduced in V include the
ability to time shift recordings or as the procedure is otherwise
known, Chase Playback. I will hereby refer to Time Shifting as
Chase Playback in this article because the term to Time Shift
actually applies to other audio editing and reproduction procedures.

So what is Chase Playback? Perhaps the following examples best
illustrate the facility. You'll no doubt be aware that with a Tape
deck or VCR, everything is recorded sequentially onto tape, that is to
say you can't play back what's been recorded until you press stop,
then rewind the tape and press Play, this means of course that you
cannot record anything whilst playing the content you previously
recorded unless you have say another deck or VCR connected to take
over the recording from where your other recorder left off. Chase
Playback changes that, you can start recording, go have a cup of
coffee, press the play button and start playing from the start of
the recording. You could also use this facility say if the phone
rings, pause the playback, Total Recorder keeps recording till you've
finished with your phone call, then press the Pause button again to
resume listening from where you left off.

This feature is an admirable enhancement to any audio or video
recording package and I'm extremely disappointed that Audio Hijack Pro
for the Mac still does not have a similar feature, will that come?
Well who knows but I guess we can just keep knocking on the door of
the developers of Audio Hijack and hope for the best.

Chase Playback with Total Recorder is not without its faults
however, I used Chase Playback this evening, started the function
halfway through a recording of a 30 minute news bulletin, about 15
minutes later the Playback suddenly stopped and it only took me a few
seconds to realise why. The scheduler for Total Recorder had stopped
recording the audio source exactly 30 minutes after it had started, so
far so good. I'd started the chase playback halfway through so when
the recording stopped? Well so did the Chase Playback, I was able to
resume by pressing play and thus hear the bulletin to the end but I
have to admit, this distraction was rather annoying and surely, their
must be a work around to avoid this sort of thing happening, I've sent
a note to the developers of Total Recorder so we'll see what happens.

Now we come to a second part of Total Recorder V7 which I believe to
be a great leap forward and that's the ability to Capture Internet
streams in their native format, up until now when you've captured an
Internet stream the stream has been converted to another format thus
usually causing some aspects of audio quality to be lost, you can
still have Total Recorder convert to your desired format if that's
 what you want.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get this Software Recording
function to work, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't and here
we find that Audio Hijack just thrashes Total recorder, with Audio
Hijack (as the name suggests), you hijack the source you wish to
capture and that's the end of the story, record, redirect or whatever
but with Total Recorder? Well its a matter of trying to Troubleshoot
or determine why the software isn't capturing the stream, the Skip
call or whatever and as the manual says, this could be for any number
of reasons, anything from incompatible software to incompatible
drivers but I guess, one shouldn't be surprised when running Windows
smile. I don't mind admitting that I just gave up using Total
Recorder to capture the BBC World Service stream or the audio stream
from Radio 2SM in Sydney and got Audio Hijack Pro on the Mac to do the
 job instead.

Should you buy Total Recorder? Well the Professional version at $35.00
U.S is a Must Have in my view if you're wanting to record audio,
the Chase Playback function sets this application apart from
anything else I know about thus far and that alone makes your $40.00
well spent. The audio editor isn't too bad and the rules function
 makes this software extremely flexible.

When I can, i plan to purchase the video add-on.

I Got the Zen Stone 2GB mainly for talking books on the road so the very

That's kind of a brief explanation, after your long treatise on the

explanation, why don't you, at least, attach some importance, to the fact
that you were talking about an entirely different program? It seems,

I use JLC's Internet TV with Jaws. Sometimes it is hard to get Jaws
focused
in the right area. Understanding the layout of the screen helps. I
 wish
 it
used the control tab or f6 to switch tabs. Instead, I need to use the
 jaws
cursor a lot to switch areas.

It's free but it installs a community toolbar. It won't work if you
uninstall the toolbar and you can not choose not to install the toolbar
 in
 the first place.

It does have system wide hot keys but you need to turn on numlock to
 make
 it
 work.

Have no other issues with Jaws or my computer so far.

 Hi Lisa,

You might wish to try JLC's Internet TV. You can get it from
 www.jlc-software.com/index.php?page=internet_tv.html

It works well with JAWS and on the page it states:

JLC's Internet TV is a FREE program for watching and browsing thousands
 of
TV channels freely available on the internet. It's
probably the biggest and most up to date database of channels ever, and
users are able to submit, rate and flag channels. And with
the new flagging and rating system you'll easily see which channels
 works
and which is worth to watch and our goal is to bring you
the best online TV experience out there!

 Hi everyone,

I had a sighted friend who showed me a program that allows you to view
 3000
television and radio stations around the world. I think this is really
 cool.
Does anyone know of an accessible software that would work with JAWS in
viewing many of these channels? He says that the program he installed

laptop computer is only usable with a mouse and not a keyboard. Any
 suggestions?
Thanks for your assistance in this area.

That's kind of a brief explanation, after your long treatise on the cursor
use and such, don't you think? Since you were so verbose, in your
explanation, why don't you, at least, attach some importance, to the fact
that you were talking about an entirely different program? It seems, that
it would be common courtesy to do that, after you led some people off in a
 blind direction!

Re: Which Players do best with which players

2008-05-27 Thread Bobcat
Good question. I recently found that files I recorded to MP3 with Nexus
Radio sound much better in Winamp than Windows Media Player 10. However, I
generally prefer Windows Media Player for most formats. I've managed to set
it up to not over compress music, something people complain about with WMP.

Winamp is a bit more clear but I find the highs a touch harsh, even with
uncompressed media.

I also love the built in SRS WOW! surround process in WMP 10. There are 3d
sound plugins for Winamp as well but not as easy to use.

Re: Digital Recorders Revisited

2008-05-15 Thread Bobcat
The ds-30 works as well as the other models. Only, it only has 250
megabytes of memory. Also, I think the case is plastic instead of mettle.

I wish I could get the ds-50 locally because it also comes with a case. The
units don't have a pocket clip so a case is kind of important. One can
order the case but you still don't have as much memory and recording time
with the other models.

I have the Zenstone Plus with the FM radio but no speaker. The
 speaker
version came out just after I got mine. I have read from at least one
 blind
person who has one with a speaker. I switch between the MP3 player and
 the
FM radio without trouble except sometimes managing to skip ahead one MP3
file while switching to the radio.
Creative makes players much larger than 2 gig but I am not familiar
 with the model designations.

Thanks for all the info about the Victor Stream. I was hoping it would at
least be able to record at 128k mp3 or wma. Stereo is a good way to get

not intended for this purpose. I just wish it was. I don't like carrying a

I happened upon the following free utility at download.com that might be
what you are looking for. I haven't tried it yet but plan to.

Publisher's description of Cathy
From
Robert Vasicek:
Cathy is an extremly small, very fast and easy to use media cataloging
tool. You can use it to index files stored on removable media (CD-ROMs,
LS120, Iomega
Zip and Jaz disks, or even diskettes), hard disks or net drives, and create
searchable catalogs that can be used without having access to original
media.
Searching capabilities are based on file name, date and size. Additional
features include filtering options, search duplicates or singles,
customizable
date format, etc. Found files can be opened (executed) or deleted directly,
if they are present. Drag and drop support. Directory trees, MP3 album/song
lists can be printed, disk space usage can be investigated.

Re: Mp3 cataloguing

2008-05-10 Thread Bobcat
I am trying Cathy now. Jaws had a little trouble seeing the tabs. You need
to find the catalogue tab first but the program starts in the search tab. I
found I needed to refresh Jaws and use the mouse cursor to find the other
tabs.

You need to right click a file to get options such as deleting. File
deletion is off by default. You need to start Cathy with a -dd switch to
allow deletion from the program. You could make a shortcut for the program
add -dd to the target. Or, you could use run and type cathy -dd but Cathy
would have to be on a path. Easier to make a shortcut to the program.

tool. You can use it to index files stored on removable media (CD-ROMs,
 LS120, Iomega
Zip and Jaz disks, or even diskettes), hard disks or net drives, and
 create
searchable catalogs that can be used without having access to original
 media.
Searching capabilities are based on file name, date and size. Additional
features include filtering options, search duplicates or singles,
 customizable
date format, etc. Found files can be opened (executed) or deleted
 directly,
if they are present. Drag and drop support. Directory trees, MP3
 album/song
lists can be printed, disk space usage can be investigated.

Good Morning,

I'm looking for a simple accessible program that will help me sort
all of my mp3 files into a text document. Any suggestions? I have
over 5000 files that are categorized into artist/album and so on but
I'm afraid I may have a few duplicates Any help would be much
 appreciated.

Re: High-End Sound Card, Two Speakers

2008-05-08 Thread Bobcat
Bruce. You might want to continue using the internal sound card for Jaws
and system sounds. It's nice to use two sound cards when editing audio or
using your computer for music, when you have a screen reader. Hopefully,
your computer will work with two sound cards, some have problems. Creative
cards can have trouble if the MB has Realtec ac'97 at the same time. I had
that trouble at first but got around it by disableing a bunch of unnecessary
Creative software at startup.

Subject: High-End Sound Card, Two Speakers

I am in the process of assembling a new desktop system for myself. I'm
not building my own computer, but I am adding things I want. One thing
I'm looking at doing is adding an internal sound card to replace the
integrated one that comes with the system. While I love doing audio
editing, I'm an old-fashioned type who still uses just two speakers. So
what I want to know is, is there a high-end sound card that will allow
me to use two speakers instead of 100 or whatever the current surround
sound specifications are? I don't care if the card has 5.1 or 7.1
capabilities, I might want to utilize that in future, but I'd like to be
able to use my old-fashioned two-speaker stereo speakers if I can. How's
 the Sound Blaster Audogy SE?

You change your jfw.ini file because the Magic Jack is an audio device.
 Any
time you introduce a new audio device, there's the possibility-likelihood
that Jaws will become inappropriately enamored of that new device and
 start
trying to speak through it instead of the sound card you normally use.
There's a step-by-step article on the Freedom Scientific site which you
 can
find by searching on a telling string like say
 Two sound cards
That will show you how to find the system-recognized name of your
 preferred
audio device and then how to modify your jfw.ini file so that Jaws will
 always use only that card.

Hi, I have been trying to work with MJ and had some problems so removed it
and finally got my system back up and working ok.
 But now...you mention this:
I found my jfw.ini file and added the line to lock Jaws into using the
 built-in soundcard on my motherboard.
I plugged the lowly piece of hardware into my USB port... And waited with
 bated breath.
XP was a little confused at first, and asked me if I wanted to use this
device to copy pictures from a camera to my hard drive...
But meanwhile, the onboard software installed itself, downloaded updates
 and
took me to the registration screen.

Why did you have tomake a change in jaws?
What type of software does it download, where are the files and what are
 they named?
Does MJ interfere with anything else?
Could you explain in detail on exactly how to do this?
Do you mean that jaws no longer works with the elequence program or waht?
I would much appriciate any help.
 Thank you,
 MMM

I established my location, verified my settings... And soon, I was
greeted with the soft phone's screen showing me my fine new phone
 number.

So I plugged in a telephone to the other end of the Magic Jack.
I got a dial tone, but at first, I couldn't get the phone's buttons to
operate... That is, when I pushed the buttons, there was no
accompanying tone pulse, so there was no dialing from the telephone.
I could dial out from the soft phone, and I'd had trouble with that
phone previously... During those ancient times in a former century
when we used to have 56-k modems in our computers and splitters for
 our telephones...
So I switched out that phone for a cordless phone... And after
positioning the base unit for the phone far away enough from the
router such that that strange helicopter sound wasn't to be heard
during my test conversations, I arrived at having a fully functional
telephone connection contingent only on my computer's availability.
As I personally hate cell phones for anything but necessary calls,
I'll enjoy talking to my relatives over a stable connection at a very
 reasonable price.
Thanks to who ever was the first person to post the news about Magic
 Jack to this list!

Okay, let me see if I can do a bit of a better job here. I start
 Gold
Wave recording. Then I switch into Winamp, start my file, and sing
 my
vocal.. Then I go in and trim the beginning and end off the vocal,
 since
it's just typing sounds. Then I load the music track into Gold
 Wave.
 I
copy the trimmed vocal track into the clipboard, and use control+m
 to
mix it in with the music track. Preview really helps here because
 you
can edit the precision of where you want it to start to within a
thousandth of a second. When it's mixed, including volumes and so
 on,
you save the track. This has the added benefit that you can add
 any
effects to your voice (reverb, for example, I use the Freeverb
 plugin
 as
it provides better reverb than Gold Wave's) before mixing the
 voice
 with
the music, so you don't have to apply the effect to the background
 music
 as well.

Hi all, I own both the zenstone and the zenstone plus which is the 1gig
unit. I love them both, but the smaller zenstone which has the switch on
top instead of the push bar is much better to work with. You do not need
any software but as one other person mentioned, you only need to plug it
into the usb port, charge it and that is it.
You really dont need a manual but go to the blind geek web site and there
you can listen to an audio file on the zenstone.
I like the larger unit for space, but rather would own the less expensive
 and more useable one instead.
Take care and that is what I know

www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Plugins/RealTime-Equalizer.shtml

My search terms on Google were
equalizer for windows

I think all of these are system wide programs that work with any source.
There are others that only work with specific media players.

Before anyone asks, I have not tried any of these yet.

I found demos of two such animals.

You can download them from my server at:

 There not very Blind friendly.

For JAWS users, HotSpotClicker might provide good access.

My problem is similar but in my case my sound card doesn't come with a E
Qfeature. though I have software for playing my music that has E q
abilities this has no affect on my software speech which comes out too
bassy. thus, the need of a software program that will work by itself
 and

YouTube Flash player buttons

2008-02-18 Thread Bobcat
I've been working out the Flash player buttons on YouTube. I have managed
to discover what most of them are for. I was even able to label them in
Jaws.

I just copied the controls to the clipboard and now I see there are a few
more controls. Oops. the extra buttons disappeared when I pressed the 4
button. I also never saw the controls called views when I was labelling
them. I'm sure I had labelled the control under play/pause as stop.

This is what it looks like now after pressing the 4 button and when I was
labelling them in the first place:

Hello, does anyone know how to get rid of the plug-in chainer that gets in
the way when you move around with the cursor keys in the data window? It's
slowing me down, because whenever I press a key, the plug-in chainer comes
up, and I have to close it with control f4. If I minimize the plug-in

 I
never use the plug-in chainer, and really don't know what it does, other

 Thanks a lot.

Re: Finding CD names etc.

Yes. You can do this.

Move to the unknown album in the library. Then use the context key to bring
up a menu. Near the bottom of the menu you will see find album info. This
brings up a web form that is a bit complex so I won't describe it here. It
lets you search for the album and adds track info.

Good luck.

Re: Winamp 5.35 and external sound card won't play nice together

2007-11-04 Thread Bobcat
Can you set the SB Live to be the default sound card and get system sounds
from it? If no, you may need to disable some Creative utilities in
Msconfig. If you do get sound from the SB live you can get the internal
sound card to be the default and set Winamp to use the SB Live. You want to
make sure that only use preferred devices is not checked in Sounds and Audio
devices on the audio page.. Then go to the output plug-in in Winamp and
configure it to use the sblive. It should show up as a device if the card
is properly installed and available in sounds and audio devices.

Subject: Winamp 5.35 and external sound card won't play nice together

 Hi folks
I'm posting this question to multiple lists in hopes I can get a
somewhat quick answer. I've got someone who has written to me
privately off list who just got an external sound card, it's a SB live!
She's using a laptop with a signatel soundcard, yeah not the best
but these laptops have never had good sound cards for things.
What she would like to do is separate things, so her window-eyes
software speech goes on one card, and the music from Winamp goes to
the other. She wants to learn how to broadcast, and we've got
everything together but this issue came up yesterday and I haven't
been able to figure out what in hell is going on.
I spent a couple hours with her on the phone and msn trying to get
this to work but without much success. Even though everything is
plugged in properly, the SB Live card simply will not work, and we
can't figure out why. One of her room mates has a very similar card,
and he was able to use it without installing the software for it, and
when he did it required a working pare of eyes which isn't easy to
come by there. I'm just wondering if the card that's not working
actually might require the software to work whereas the other one
didn't seem to? Also,I'm wondering which card should handle which
thing, would the internal sound card handle the software speech
better tthan it would music, remember this is for broadcasting
purposes so she wants the broadcast to sound as good as it can. I've
done everything I can think of, and I am stumped. So, I'm wondering
if any of you folks have any ideas? Just for specific's sake, She's
using Winamp 5.35 and the Nullsoft waveout plugin for her music
output, and in the configuration for that plugin, she has Winamp
pointed to her SB Live external card, which as I said at the
beginning, doesn't work at all. She hears her speech fine because
that's on her regular internal card for the laptop, but no music. Is
there something we're doing wrong, or is it possible that her laptop
and that particular external card just aren't compadible for some
 crazy reason or another?

I hope what I'm asking makes some sense here, so if anyone can give
 some tips, I'd be greatful!
 Thanks!
 Chris

Re: Winamp 5.35 and external sound card won't play nice together

2007-11-04 Thread Bobcat
Does the card show up in Device Manager? Easy way to check is to go to
Sounds and Audio Devices Properties in Control Panel. Then go to the
hardware tab. A list of audio devices will show up. You can check the
device properties there and there is also a trouble shooting button.

Bob.

 Hi Bob

From what we can tell, no sound appears to be coming from it, even
when headphones or speakers are plugged into it, that's the root of
the problem. What is interesting about this whole thing is that when
her room mate hooks up her external card to the same computer, it
doesn't work either, but it works fine on other computers in the
house. I'm wondering if this isn't some kind of a driver issue? When
she hooked it up, Windows was successfully able to find the card,
but she didn't get any speech, which is what started this whole thing.
So it looks like it's a driver issue but the problem is I don't know
where to go to remove the drivers so windows can properly find the card
 again.
If we can get windows to not only find the card but install the
drivers we might have a shot at this!
But thanks for the tip, it's helpful.

Somehow, I manage to switch music folders but I don't know how I'm doing it.
Guess I need some sighted help.

In the mean time: I've noticed the noise floor when recording with the
internal microphones is quite high. I plugged in a Sony stereo mic and the
noise floor dropped quite a lot. I wonder why. I can tell the Sony is more
sensitive. But, the noise level actually drops when I plug in the Sony. Is
it because the internal mic is noise cancelling?

This thing is sooo plastic. Pressing anywhere on the case while recording
causes a loud click and crunch sound to be picked up by the internal mics.
It isn't nearly as well made as my old VS-90.

How does one size Winamp to use more of the screen? This would be for
better visibility. We tried sizing it but could only stretch it

messed up the video aspect ratio . It seems there is no way to make the

noisy firewire?

A friend just got a new Ederal fa-66 firewire audio interface. It is great
but has one problem. There is noise from the outputs. It is a high pitched

disconected. The unit is still on and powered by AC.

Now I've heard roomors that this can happen with firewire, that one can get
noise from the firewire adaptor.

Anyone own this card and or have had a simoler problem with firewire?

Bob

BTW: I tried the unit on my computer. There was still some noise but it
was much less.

The dealer has ordered a replacement. I hope it works better because this
is a great sounding system with real physical controls.

Re: Balance Control in Windows Media Player?

2007-10-06 Thread Bobcat
Get to the balance control by activating the equalizer window with
alt+v-e-g. That's View, Enhancements, Graphic equalizer. Then you have to
tab till you actually get to that window's controls. If your eq is off, you
won't need to tab far to the balance control but if the eq is on, you need
to tab past all the sliders.

It would be nice if WMP had direct control for the balance but it doesn't.

With Winamp, I use control alt H to play only the left channel and control

these extremes with control alt K to resume playing the channels at equal

Is there a setting or plugin for WMP 10 to accomplish this? Or does WMP

Re: zenstone question

2007-09-26 Thread Bobcat
Yes. The plus has menus. There is a manual that does explain how it works
but it doesn't give exact steps or describe the menus in detail.

The 1 gig Stone does not have menus.

I don't think the Zen Stone 2 gig version, called the Zen Stone Plus, is as
easy to use. It does have menus that the regular 1 gig Stone does not have.
It has FM and voice recording. without dedicated controls. I've been hoping
someone would learn the menu structure and see if it is a good or bad one
for blind users.

Braille CD-Rs

2007-09-10 Thread Bobcat
from http://blog.scifi.com/tech/archives/2007/09/04/braille_cdrs_ma.html

Braille CD-Rs make it easier to copy blind

If you put a blindfold on, would you be able to tell one CD from another?
That's pretty much what blind people have to deal with all the time.
Recognizing
the problem, Mitsubishi Japan created CD-Rs with
Braille
printed on the label side so the blind would be able to tell one disc from
another. In a pack of 10, each 700-MB recordable CD has its own identity
written
in Braille.

To create the Braille dots, Mitsubishi printed the labels with two layers
high-viscosity ink, which allowed for characters to protrude up to 0.1
millimeters
from the surface of the disc. In addition, the rest of the label is printed
with extra-smooth ink so the dots stand out as much as possible. Great
innovation,
though it probably means this technology is out of the realm of home inkjets
for now. You could get special ink for Braille labeling, I suppose, but it's
doubtful there would be enough demand for the industry to offer it.

Of course, there's no reason this technology couldn't be used for DVDs and
other media, so expect more Braille discs to come down the pike soon. -

Re: Zen Stone Plus

2007-08-07 Thread Bobcat
I wish I knew how menu and control navigation worked on the Zen Stone Plus.
I looked at one today but it was not charged so the store staff could not
show me how it worked. The plus looks a lot like the regular Stone with the
addition of a small screen. However, the 3 position slider is replaced by a
rocker style button that appears to have two functions. Play/stop at one
end of the button and back at the other end.

I didn't buy one today as I don't have convenient sighted help to get it
working. Also, the unit is packaged in a way that makes returning it a
problem. I know the store would take it back if I didn't like it but I hate
messing around with them like that.

 From the review, it says:

... the first song from each folder will start playing as you browse.
The gist is that you're getting the same exact music navigation as with
the Stone, just now you have a screen. Essentially, the screen just
serves to allow for several other features.

So it sounds like the screen and the extra features don't get in the way
of navigating the music and the tracks already on the Stone Plus, i.e.
you could just use it exactly like the Stone. I guess the real question,
as Bob asks, then is whether the extra features, like the tuner and the
recorder, and the interface is accessible.

Re: SoundBlaster's inaccessible equalizer

2007-08-06 Thread Bobcat
I've actually had a little luck getting at those bass and treble controls.

1: Make sure your screen reader is reading tool tips. The values of the
sliders and the headers will be spoken when the mouse moves over them.

2: Rout your Jaws or mouse pointer to the active window.

3: Use the mouse up, down, left, and right movement keys. ctrl+shift+arrow
keys with Jaws and WindowEyes.

4: If you hear a number spoken you have landed on a slider.

5: Lock the left mouse button down.

6: Use mouse up and down to change the levels. These are vertical sliders.

7: You might not hear the values change so unlock the left mouse and move
the pointer to the left or right a few spaces to get off the control. The
new value will be spoken when you move back to the control.

Master volume is the first slider on the left. Next is bass, then treble.

I wish I could give you the coordinates for the sliders but Jaws doesn't
seem to report this accurately, probably cause I'm not doing it right. I've
tried making a frame around each slider but that didn't work either.

I'm sure someone could actually write a Jaws script for the Creative mixer
if they tried.

It is a shame that Creative kept making their mixers less accessible over
time. Their old AWE 32 mixer actually worked well and even had hot keys to
move direct to controls.

Older SoundBlaster cards offered a slider for bass and trebble,
controlable via Windows's standard mixer. Newer cards don't have these
software sliders anymore. They offer a graphical equalizer software
instead, with which one seemingly can adjust more sound frequency
bands. However, this graphical equalizer seems to be inaccessible to
100 %. Does anybody here know a solution for this problem? Is there
perhaps an alternative software to control the SoundBlaster equalizer?

 Thanks

copying music to removable device

2007-06-25 Thread Bobcat
I'm copying a folder of music, one album, to a new SD 2 gig card. I wonder
why it takes so long. The folder is about 234 MB and is taking about 9
minutes. Not only that but the folder I'm copying from is unavailable while
the computer is copying using the copy to folder feature in the edit menu of
Windows Explorer.

Are SD cards normally this slow? Is there a better way to transfer music
files to portable devices? Copy and paste is just as slow and not so easy
to pick and choose what to transfer.

A very quck way of doing this is to go to yoru music folder,
Hit apps key on it, hit play in winamp.

Once it loads and starts playing the first track hit pause.

Now hit, Ctrl, alt G.

This will generate a list of the music to an html page that can be saved an
emailed.

It gives some cool stats too liek average tracnk length, total running time
for all tracks.

Just one of many options for making music catalogues.

Re: sound card fore home studio

2007-05-08 Thread Bobcat
Delta cards are high quality. However, sometimes they have problems with
some sata hd controllers causing glitching with some audio software.
M-Audio is aware of this but has not fixed it, as far as I know.

BTW: A friend got a Audiophile 24/192 and is not to happy with the sound.
It's mostly quite good but he gets no real low frequencies. We have
confirmed this by listening but not with test equipment. Not sure what the
problem is. He has also not been able to get it to work with Sonar or any
other midi software yet. Maybe his drivers got hozed when he had a
motherboard meltdown. Unfortunetly, he has misplaced the software Cd for
the card. I can't help him with this and I feel frustrated.

Hi Joe. If you really want good quality, proffessional sounding
 recordings,
then I would recommend the delta family of sound cards from
 www.m-audio.com
which has a range of affordable, yet excellent hardware and software for
studio use. In your case, I would recommend the delta 2496 card which is
cheap, yet excellent in results. Cheers!

Hi. I'm a guitarist and I would like to get software fore multi tracking.
Nothing to elaborate, just something I can play with at home. My PC. has
 a
gig of ram and about two gig processor speed with windows XP. home and
 jaws 7. I use a SoundBlaster audigy card. I have a Macki 1202vlz mixer.
 Is
my audigy card of high enough quality to do this? or do I need a better
one. If so, what card would any musicians and vocalists recommend.
 Looking

Re: wireless headphone device.

2007-04-30 Thread Bobcat
The wireless amplifier they sell is reported to be extremely good. It is
one of the new highly acclaimed T-amps. You can read about the t-amp at:
www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/t-amp_e.html -

I'm not sure if the Amphony amp is the same chip that these people are
talking about but I'm guessing it is.

I was thinking of getting one. However, it wouldn't be portable like
wireless headsets.
