OK folks, I got the message. The pc audio list will continue, probably on
groups.i o. Not because I'm too cheap to pay for website space, but because
DMARC and other e-mail list constraints have made lists difficult to manage.
More information to follow.

RE: List Termination

2017-11-14 Thread Norma A. Boge
I guess my ISP must have a good Spam filter because I don't recall seeing
any on this list.
I, too, have been on the list quite a while. Although the traffic isn't
steady, it is nice to have a place where I know my audio-related questions
will get answered. I guess I could live with the list disappearing if
someone could post subscription info for other lists where our audio
questions are welcome. I hope such an animal exists.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am seriously considering terminating the pc audio list.
There is very little traffic on the list but a lot of spam. Also, with the
advent of DMARC I have no idea who is or is not receiving list messages.

I could take the list to Google Groups or some other commercial e-mailing
list if there is enough interest, or, maybe some one else would be
interested taking on administration duties of the list. There is a cost for
the domain name and web space.

Jonathan Mosen started the list almost twenty years ago and it might have
out lived it's usefulness.

Comments are welcome. Best to contact me directly.

just to let any Audacity users on this list, that version 2.1.3 has just been
released. For the new features in this release, see this page of the
manual:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/new_features_in_this_release.html

Included in these new features is that labels are now easier to use for users
of screen readers. Please note that the default shortcut for "play/stop and set
cursor" has been changed to the letter X - it was shift
+ a in previous versions of Audacity.

There is a guide to Audacity 2.1.3 which is written for Jaws users, and nearly
all of it is also applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.1.3-Guide.html

For Windows users, a direct link to the new version is:

Unfortunately for Mac users, the screen reader version of Audacity 2.1.1
remains the recommended version:

BBC 6 music is broadcast at a very high bit rate and I was wondering if

fwd: Talking Digital AM / FM HD Radio

2013-12-20 Thread Norma A. Boge
From acb-l:

Subject: [MARKETING] [EXTERNAL][VICUG-L] Talking Digital AM / FM HD Radio

A little birdie has allowed us to release the following information:

The new talking HD FM radio we've hinted about is due to be introduced
officially to the market during the C.E.S. (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las
Vegas January 8th. The radio has a form factor nearly identical to that of
the Narrator. The features are also similar with some enhancements. The
radio will be manufactured and sold by Audio Vox. For the general public,
the radio will sell for $149, however, those with vision impairments will be
allowed to use a special coupon code which will reduce the price to $99. The
radio will be initially available from the Audio Vox web site
http://www.audiovox.com. I'm sure Sun Sounds will be selling them also. The
radio is a stereo AM/ FM HD radio with tactile buttons, a large print
display, snooze / alarm / clock, presets, scan up and down, manual tuning,
Auxiliary input, headphone jack. The radio announces the buttons pushed, as
well as the results of a button push. For instance, it announces the name
and frequency of stations as you tune. Or, it announces when you switch from
FM to AM to Auxiliary.

FCC Proposes AM Radio Changes To Give The Band A Boost

2013-12-10 Thread Norma A. Boge

For years, sports broadcasts were a staple of AM radio. But now, AM seems to
be mostly a mix of talk shows and infomercials, and the Federal
Communications Commission wants the band to be relevant again.
AM radio once played a central role in American life. The family would
gather around the Philco to hear the latest Western or detective drama. The
transistor radio was where baby boomers first heard the Beatles and other
Top 40 hits. And, of course, there's no better way to take in a ballgame.
But the AM band is not what it used to be. Now, it's mostly a mix of talk
shows and infomercials. According to the Federal Communications Commission,
in the mid-1980s, AM radio still claimed 30 percent of the nation's radio
listening hours. By 2010, that had dwindled to 17 percent. And among younger
listeners, the number is just 4 percent. Part of the problem, says FCC
Commissioner Ajit Pai, is that the AM signal is getting increasingly hard to
hear.
Whether you're outside and you're getting interference from a power line,
or you're inside and everything from the bulbs in your house to the cable
box on top of your TV send out signals that conflict with the AM radio
signal, and so for broadcasters trying to reach an audience, it's more and
more difficult for them to do that, Pai says.
Pai and other commissioners are proposing a number of fixes for the
interference problem, including making it easier for AM stations to move
their signal to the FM band. They've also proposed modifying the rules that
require many AM stations to power down at night.
Pai says AM radio is an important source of information, especially during
an emergency like a natural disaster. Keeping the medium thriving is also
important for minority broadcasters, two-thirds of whom broadcast on AM.
Pai also admits to some nostalgia of his own.
I still remember almost 25 years ago listening to the KLKC 1540 broadcast
of my high school basketball championship game in 1987, when my mom wouldn't
allow me to go to the game in person so I had to go into my room, sulking a
little bit, and tune it to 1540, and I listened to the broadcast that way,
Pai says.
That station, KLKC, in Parsons, Kan., still broadcasts high school sports,
says Brandon Nivens, the general manager. He says his station is taking
other steps to increase its listening audience, including streaming its
signal on the Internet.
Getting into the online aspect of it really helps a lot. We actually stream
our AM station online, so that kind of helps reach into the digital realm
and kind of get a younger demographic that way, he says.
KLKC, like many in rural America, is tied to its community through local
news. The station provides services that includes a swap show called The
Trading Post, where on a recent day listeners offered everything from
fresh-picked pecans to a used guitar amplifier for sale.
It's this kind of intimate connection AM broadcasters have with their
listeners, Pai says, that makes revitalizing the AM band important.
Whether it's the long-haul trucker who got used to listening to a station
as he or she drove across the country to kids who listen to baseball games
on warm summer nights, there is something about AM radio that's really
embedded in our national culture, and so long as I have a perch here at the
FCC I hope to advocate for that to continue, Pai says.
Not all of AM radio is struggling. In fact, five of the top 10
revenue-producing stations are on the AM dial. That's one reason Dennis
Wharton of the National Association of Broadcasters is optimistic and
supportive of the FCC's proposals.
There's a lot to be said for AM radio, and the challenges are purely
related to interference, and [if] we get those resolved, the industry is
going to boom, Wharton says.
The FCC is gathering public comments on the proposed rule changes and may
vote on them by next spring.

Re: Total Recorder

2011-06-27 Thread Norma A. Boge
I also recommend new TR users play around with the recording
Wizard. It's a good way to get some work done right off because the
program can be rather daunting for some from the get go. I believe
one can access the recording Wizard from the tools menu, at least
that's where it is in my version, which is 6 pro. HTH Norma

Hi Yvonne,

While in CDex, hit F4 to open the configuration dialogue.
Use control + tab to reach the CD Drive tab
Tab until you hear select all CD tracks by default and use the
space bar to uncheck.

Tab to ok and hit enter.

To read where CDex is placing ripped files on your computer,
While in CDex, hit F4 to open the configuration dialogue.
Use control + tab to reach the File Names tab
Tab 3 times and use arrow keys to read the directory where Wav and
MP3 files are stored. For example, on my computer, it says m:\my music\

Hit escape to close the Configuration Dialogue.

Once you know the directory where ripped files are stored, open it
using Windows Explorer or My Computer. Here you can use the standard
commands for selecting files. After you've selected the files you
want to burn, you should be able to hit the Applications Key and find
the send to option discussed in a previous message.

I know this can seem overwhelming, but hang in there. you'll get it!

Well I'm not going to read a whole thread of email but the subject
line intrigues me, what has to be user friendly about a turntable?
I've been using them for nearly 40 years and in that time it hasn't
caused me too much of a strain to put the needle on the old long
playing record so given all that why can't people do that now.

And in any case, why buy a USB turntable? Most of the older models
and a lot of the newer models are far better than some of those USB
cheap things I've seen, plastic tone arms for one thing so really
again, if you're serious about putting record to computer then buy a
proper turntable that plugs into an amp, you can get preempts if you
need them for your sound card and then? Well go your hardest with
your favorite audio sampling software.

So what am I missing here? User friendly turntables, next we'll be
looking for user-friendly light switches, user-friendly food plates
and bowls etc.

Hi Mac,

The info I posted about Total Recorder was part of a message I
received from High Criteria on June 14. I didn't recall seeing the
info posted previously, so I went ahead and sent it.

If using Jaws, insert __+ control + v will read the version
number. Or you can go under help and enter on about.

My apologies to the list for any confusion my posting might have caused.

Take care, guys...

In WMP 11, use control + tab to place focus in the seek slider. I'm

arrow to decrease.

Hope this works for you all...

I have Windows Media Player and also audigen explorer at my disposal.

This thread reminds me of why I wondered why the remastering of the
Beatles albums is such a big deal. I can appreciate Sir George and
Giles Martin producing, but wouldn't all this only really sound good
if on vinyl? IMHO, there is music that isn't meant to be digitized
Seems there are more albums being made available on vinyl. I figure
this is due to boomers with disposable income wanting to hear music
as they did in their youth.

Just my 2 cents...

Dane,

With a card reader and the Companion software, I think transferring
files to the VRS is quite easy. I use a PC, so that's probably why
it is so, as I'm not sure if the Companion software works on a mac.

I also like the human voice prompts. However, the synthesized voices
available for the VRS are, IMHO, better than nothing but not by
much. Thank god for Text Aloud.

Combining genres with streaming audio

I want several genres when listening to streaming music. For

Hi!

I've got what perhaps may be an easier option for you than Total
Recorder, will cost a little more but will probably do a better job.

There are DVD/VCR combo units available from brands such as
Panasonic which both play and record DVD'S and video cassettes so
therefore it follows you can dubb from one to the other at the touch
of a button.

I've had my Panasonic model for nearly 4 years now and I wouldn't be
without it for the very reasons you've written to me in the first
place smile.

If you'd rather capture images onto your computer and dubb them across
to another media then you'll need to use Total Recorder video
Professional, I don't own this product as yet so I can't give you all
that information about it, I plan to upgrade to it next week so in the
meantime you may consider reading some of the primers on Total
Recorder Video Professional and how to capture video etc which can be
found on Total Recorder's web site at http://www.totalrecorder.com

Good luck with all that, sounds exciting.

Re: Seeking USB/analog turntable recommendations

2009-08-31 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hi guys,

Many thanks for the great response to my inquiry. I think I am going
to get a turntable with USB and analog outputs, because I like the
idea of buying only 1 unit to use with my PC and rack stereo
system. If I for some reason don't like what I'm getting from the
turntable via USB, I guess I can then get a pre-amp and use the
analog output jacks. Has anyone had any experience with the Memorex
turntables which are USB/analog? Actually, now that I think about
it, I may need to go with a quality traditional turntable because of
the need for a separate 78 cartridge. (Thanks to the person who
reminded me of that fact.)
Wow, this is a little more complicated than I originally
thought. You guys are great, I am learning a lot!

Thanks again,

Hi listers,

I'd like input on turntable which have the following features:

USB and analog outputs
plays 33 1/3, 45 and 78
under $150

I was also wondering about the units which have the turntable and CD
burner in one. Can I presume if the vinyl is less than near perfect
condition, it's better to use software to apply noise reduction, etc.?

Any and all comments much appreciated,

Re: Using a Bluetooth earpiece as a general PC headset

2009-02-23 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hi David,

Such a bluetooth device will work for the PC. However, if your PC is
not bluetooth-enabled (like mine) you will also have to purchase the
bluetooth transmitter. I got my headset, which is just a single
earpiece w/mic at Radio Shack on sale for about $20 and I got the
transmitter at Best Buy for I think $40. I had to have a little
sighted help setting up the software as the initial screen wasn't
accessible but it was ok after getting past that.

Sirius XM Prepares for Possible Bankruptcy

2009-02-11 Thread Norma A. Boge

The New York Times
February 11, 2009 Wednesday
Late Edition - Final
Section B; Column 0; Business/Financial Desk; Pg. 1
780 words
Satellite Radio Company Sirius XM Prepares for Possible Bankruptcy
By ANDREW ROSS SORKIN and ZACHERY KOUWE

Last summer, Mel Karmazin was rattling off his trademark one-liners
to talk up the future of SiriusXM Radio, the combined company he ran
that had just been blessed by regulators.

He was planning to cut costs and expand a business that was already
a fixture in the lives of millions of Americans. ''Forty-three cents
a day -- it's not even vending machine coffee,'' he said at the
time, parrying a question about whether the softening economy might
hurt subscriptions.

But now Sirius XM, the satellite radio company, has problems with
much bigger price tags. It has hired advisers to prepare for a
possible bankruptcy filing, people involved in the process said.

That would, of course, be a grim turn of events for the normally
upbeat Mr. Karmazin, Sirius XM's chief executive, who had hoped to
create a mobile entertainment juggernaut with stars like Howard Stern.

It is unclear how a bankruptcy would affect customers. Service is
unlikely to be interrupted, but the company might have to terminate
contracts with high-priced talent like Mr. Stern or Martha Stewart.

A bankruptcy would make Sirius XM one of the largest casualties of
the credit squeeze. With over $5 billion in assets, it would be the
second-largest Chapter 11 filing so far this year, according to
Capital IQ. The filing by Smurfit-Stone, with assets of $7 billion,
has been the year's biggest to date.

Sirius XM, which never turned a profit when both companies were
independent, is laden with $3.25 billion in debt. Its business model
has been dependent, in part, on the ability to roll over its
enormous debts -- used to finance sending satellites into space and
attract talent like Mr. Stern (who was paid $100 million a year) --
at low rates for the foreseeable future until it could turn a profit.

The company's success and failure are also tied to the faltering
fortunes of the automobile industry, which sells vehicles with its
radio technology installed and represented the largest customer base
among Sirius XM's 20 million subscribers.

Sirius XM owes about $175 million in debt payments at the end of
February that it is unlikely to be able to pay.

Sirius XM's problems could pave the way for a takeover by EchoStar,
the TV satellite company, which has bought up Sirius XM's debt.

Mr. Karmazin has been locked in talks with EchoStar's chief
executive, Charles W. Ergen, over Sirius XM's options, people
involved in the talks said. The men are said not to get along, these
people said, and Mr. Karmazin had rebuffed Mr. Ergen's takeover
advances before.

Sirius XM hired Joseph A. Bondi of Alvarez Marsal and Mark J.
Thompson, a bankruptcy lawyer with Simpson, Thacher Bartlett, to
help prepare a Chapter 11 filing, these people said.

Documents and analysis are close to completion and a filing could
come in days, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The threat of bankruptcy could also be part of a negotiating dance
with Mr. Ergen, who could decide to convert his debt into equity
instead of demanding payment.

In addition to the $175 million due in February, EchoStar also owns
$400 million of Sirius XM's debt due in December. If Sirius XM files
for bankruptcy, EchoStar could seek in court to take over the
company. Mr. Ergen, however, may be able to negotiate to convert his
shares before bankruptcy at an attractive rate and gain control of
the company, these people said.

For Mr. Karmazin, the sale or bankruptcy of Sirius XM would be one
of his first failures. He founded Infinity Broadcasting, sold it to
CBS and later merged the combined companies into Viacom, where he
had a notoriously difficult relationship with Sumner M. Redstone,
the chairman, before being ousted.

Mr. Karmazin bought two million shares of Sirius XM at $1.37 a share
in August. Before that, he had bought 20 million shares at an
average price of $5 each. On Tuesday, Sirius closed at 11.4 cents a share.

Since the summer, the company's prospects have dimmed.

''I'm not trying to paint the rosy picture, because we have
challenges connected to our liquidity and certainly our stock price
is dreadful,'' Mr. Karmazin said in December. ''But, you know, our
revenues are growing double digits. We're growing subscribers. We're
not losing subscribers.''

A spokeswoman for Mr. Karmazin declined to comment. A spokesman for
EchoStar could not be reached.

Mr. Karmazin staked the success of the merger on nearly $400 million
in annual cost savings and the potential to gain subscribers through
deals with auto companies to put satellite radios into cars.

But satellite radio failed to win over many younger listeners, and
competition from other sources slowed subscriber growth.

Re: Printing on CD label

2008-12-07 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hi Peter,

Write to Chip Orange at [EMAIL PROTECTED] He has developed an
accessible Word template which can help you generate Avery 5692 and
8692 CD labels. In addition to printed information, this macro will
also add a barcode to the
CD label, and the spine label of the jewel case, so that you can use
a talking barcode reader to match up CDs with cases, as well as
quickly determine

which CD is which.
The interface is easy and screen reader friendly, but you do have to
have Word (any version), and you have to use Avery 5692 or 8692 CD
labels (2 sets per
sheet, each set is a CD label, a top spine label for the jewel case,
and a side spine label for the case).

from Norma: I have not used this macro, I took the above information
from a message I kept that Chip posted to a JFW list. Anyone with
questions or thoughts should contact Chip Orange directly.

Using a bluetooth headset with a PC

2008-11-28 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to the bluetooth thing so I have some questions. I
want to get a bluetooth headset that I can wear to hear my PC
audio. Specifically, I want to be able to hear Jaws through this
headset. I understand I will need a USB device which will
essentially be the bluetooth transmitter. This will be used on a PC
running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3.
So is my understanding of what I need correct? What do I do to make
Jaws output through the USB bluetooth device? Can you recommend
bluetooth headsets which have excellent sound quality, long battery
life and are under $100? BTW, I need just the single piece that fits
in one ear and has the clip that goes in back. I understand these
come with a mic as well, which I probably won't be using.

Thanking you in advance,

Download RFBD Audiobooks With New AudioAccessSM

2008-09-20 Thread Norma A. Boge
from http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get/AUG2008_MEM_SEC2?_A=12001_U=12002

AudioAccessSM is an exciting new choice that
enables members to download RFBD® audiobooks and
literature directly to a Microsoft Windows®-based computer
— and sync them with a compatible portable media player.

With AudioAccess, members can download all the
audiobooks and literature they need for an entire
year. And, by syncing the downloaded audio textbooks to
a portable media player, they can take them
wherever they travel. Now, it will be easier for
RFBD members to use books at school, at home and on the go.

Audiobooks available through AudioAccess provide
the same high-quality sound production for an
excellent listening experience and are completely unabridged,
just like AudioPlus® books on CD. Members also
have access to the same great choice of titles
from the largest library of audio textbooks and literature
in the U.S.

Now members have choices to receive their
high-quality audiobooks through AudioPlus books
on CD with full DAISY navigation, or download them directly to
their Windows-based computer through AudioAccess
with page level navigation. Members can choose
any combination of services that they prefer, all included
in their Learning Through Listening® membership.

RFBD continues to work on developing accessible
audiobooks to meet the evolving needs of our
members. RFBD is looking forward to launching a downloadable
DAISY format in the near future which will play
on the latest generation of DAISY players. In
addition, our playback device vendors are expanding the range
of accessible devices compatible with Windows
Media and will play AudioAccess audiobooks. We
will keep you updated on products and services as they become
available, and you can check
www.rfbd.org
at any time for the latest product updates.

Here are some other important details about our new service.

• AudioAccess is fast and easy to use
• No specialized playback equipment is required
• Most people already have everything that is needed, including:
• Microsoft Windows XP or Vista
• High-speed Internet connection
• Compatible media player with common
functionality requirements, such as a Microsoft
Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher. (RFBD audio textbooks
are not compatible with Apple® Macintosh computers and iPods at this time.)

The only other item required is our software,
RFBD Download Manager, which can be installed
easily. Our 24/7 Technical Support Team is available if assistance
is needed.

Once installed on the computer, RFBD Download
Manager takes care of everything. It creates and
labels each book page as a separate audio file for easy
identification. The Download Manager organizes
the files on the computer. Members can choose to
download an entire book or only sections of a book at a
time.

AudioAccess works in the same way as a commercial
book-selling website. All RFBD members have to
do is log on to the RFBD catalog website and select the
titles they want. The site prompts members
through the ordering process every step of the way.

RFBD provides technical support for our members.

PC not recognizing Muvo T-100

2008-08-27 Thread Norma A. Boge
Hi people,

I took advantage of the great price on the Creative Muvo T-100 but
I'm off to an ominous start. Simply put, I cannot get my PC to
recognize the unit. I plugged it into a USB port on the front of my
PC, but I don't see it in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Using WMP
10, pressing the sync button results in a message about the device
not being recognized or something close to that. My husband tried it
in his PC running WMP 11 with the same result. I left it plugged
into my PC overnight because I thought it might need a charge, but
this didn't help. I really hope I don't have to return this puppy
so I would appreciate suggestions.

Hi Gary, I understand about the front USB ports. I plugged the unit
into my hub, just to check the unit, as they say not to use a hub to
transfer files, etc. I had to press it in fairly hard, but the unit
was recognized by my PC, and I am so glad it is not a problem with
the Muvo itself. So tomorrow I'm off to Radio Shack for an extension

RE: WMA online store and subscription rights

Hi Walter,

Well, I'll have to admit I'm stumped. I will say this, though. I
found WMP 11 to be difficult in terms of accessibility. For example,
I would check a box or make a selection and the next time I used WMP
it would be changed. I got to the point where I didn't want to waste
any more time with the thing so I went back to WMP 10. Oh, one last
thing: when I was searching for help with WMP 11, I ran across a very
comprehensive guide for using Jaws with WMP 11. You can check it out
at

Albert, I have been through all Option tabs and things are set to my
liking. I did tell WMP to rip when a CD is inserted, just as a test,
and the tracks were ripped, but the gap between tracks was also there
which I do not want. I prefer to not have WMP rip automatically, but
my problem is that I cannot activate the button which would actually
start a rip. Thanks for your help, Norma

At 09:37 PM 07/24/2008, you wrote:
Have you been to the options menu so you could select the folder where the

You can set it up to rip automatically after you close the drive door or to
wait until you open the player and press the rip button. Of course, you can
set it to have you decide all the setting each time.

Not hearing some XP sounds

2008-04-10 Thread Norma A. Boge
Hi people,

I'm using a Windows XP machine and I suddenly find myself not able to
hear some Windows sounds. For example, I don't hear the tunes when
Windows starts or ends. And I don't hear the sound when I connect my
Bookport to my PC, using the USB, of course. And I can't hear an
error chord, like when I want to unload Jaws. (BTW, Jaws is running
through a separate external speaker, not the PC speakers.) I looked
through the audio properties under the Volume control and either I'm
missing something or I need to look elsewhere. So, please help
preserve what little sanity I have left...:)

Anyone using Mixpad with Jaws?

2008-03-06 Thread Norma A. Boge
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone is using Mixpad with Jaws. I'm giving it
a go and don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone has already
found some work arounds for some of the stickier access issues. I'm
not looking for recommendations for other programs. Thanks, Norma

Mixer, pre-amp or both?

2008-02-20 Thread Norma A. Boge
Hi guys,

I have a digital piano I would like to use to do some recording on my
PC. The only output jack is called headphone/line out. The level is
not high enough to get an adequate signal to my sound card. I am
thinking I need a pre-amp, but don't know what to get. I am also
wondering if I need a mixer as well. I am thinking I will because I
will also have some vocals using a mic. I'm just getting started
with all this, it is strictly a hobby, so spending a lot of bread is
not really what I'm looking to do.

Ok, thanks, and I look forward to your responses,
Norma

I am pretty sure you will need Jaws Pro in order to use Windows Media
Center Edition, as this edition is considered to be a version of
Windows XP Professional. You may need a more current version of
Jaws, too. Not sure about that. I am using Media Center 2005 with
Jaws Pro 8 and it is great. HTH Norma

  Hi there,

Here's my situation. I am a Dish network subscriber and currently have
a VCR; however, I tape several shows for watching later and need a more
efficient way of keeping up with the shows and being able to tape them
without worrying about video tapes and such.
People talk avout DVR's or TVos or things like that.
I am totally blind, and don't really know my options as to what I can
use and what would be the most accessible.
  What are your suggestions?

NPR launches effort to make radio fully accessible

Press Release

NPR, Harris Corporation and Towson University Launch Global Effort To Make
Radio Accessible to Hearing and Sight Impaired

Tuesday January 8, 12:00 pm ET

First Over-The-Air Transmission From Special CES Station

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (LVCC S227) -- NPR, Harris
Corporation and Towson University today announced a new initiative to make
radio
more accessible to the hundreds of millions of hearing and visually impaired
people around the world.
At a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the
three organizations announced the global accessible radio technology
initiative
and provided the first live demonstration of the accessible radio
technology. The group also announced a new research center for developing
future technologies
on the campus of Towson University near Baltimore, MD. Additional plans call
for the establishment of an international consortium of equipment
manufacturers,
broadcasters and other organizations to help foster broad adoption of the
initiative.
The initiative will be spearheaded by the three founding organizations and
will leverage cutting-edge HD Radio(TM) technology to enable
hearing-impaired
people to see live radio content on specially equipped receivers by
applying television closed-captioning processes to radio broadcasts. The
technology
also will provide audio cues and voice prompts, as well as advanced radio
reading services, for those visually impaired and blind.
Digital radio technology makes it possible -- for the first time -- to
serve the sensory impaired, says Mike Starling, vice president and chief
technology
officer of NPR. Beyond developing the technology, this initiative will
ensure the accessibility of these radio services at minimal costs.
During the press conference, the organizations showcased the first over-
the-air transmission of the accessible radio technology using a signal from
WX3NPR,
a special temporary station authorized by the FCC for the live broadcast.
Attendees at the press conference watched the text transcript of the NPR
flagship
morning news magazine Morning Edition on the HD Radio receiver's viewing
screen, which is what a hearing-impaired listener will see using the
technology.
Additionally, the demonstration carried a digital radio reading service that
will assist the visually impaired with daily readings of current books,
newspapers
and magazines.
Following the demonstration, the participating organizations unveiled
details for the International Center for Accessible Radio Technology
(ICART), which
will be headquartered at Towson University in Towson, MD. Towson will house
the primary administrative and academic research office for the initiative,
with NPR Labs in Washington, DC, providing technology RD and software
development, and Harris Corporation supplying transmission and research
support
at its radio broadcast technology center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Members of the global initiative went on to detail plans to further study
and understand the challenges faced by the sensory-impaired population in
accessing
radio broadcasts, and develop methodologies to address those issues through
cutting-edge technologies. To ensure that the effort represents the widest
range of participants and fosters the broadest possible adoption, organizers
said they will work to bring together policymakers, broadcasters,
transmission
equipment companies and receiver manufacturers from around the world.
Presently, the initiative has more than a dozen members, representing
virtually every
aspect of the microphone to loudspeaker chain: broadcasters, network
content providers, infrastructure and transmission equipment companies, and
receiver
manufacturers. In addition to founding members NPR, Harris and Towson
University, supporting organizations include iBiquity Digital Corporation,

elphi,
NDS, Radiosophy, Helen Keller Institute, Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family
National Center for Accessible Media at WGBH(NCAM), Northern Virginia
Resource Center
for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons, and the G3ict, an Advocacy Initiative
of the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development.
NPR, Harris and Towson will jointly determine strategic direction of the
organization, with assistance from the initiative's full membership. NPR
will provide
much of the content, Harris will provide much of the transmission- related
technologies, and Towson will provide research into the needs of the
sensory-disabled
population and will house the primary ICART facility on its campus.
We're working very closely with radio stations around the world to ensure
they have the right technical infrastructure in place for this initiative,
said
Howard Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harris
Corporation. The new HD Radio transmission systems we're installing are
tailor-made
for this effort, as their digital capabilities will make it relatively easy
for stations to transmit live textual

Incomplete ripped tracks

2008-01-09 Thread Norma A. Boge
Hi guysI'm trying to rip Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and am
encountering a problem. For those who are familiar with this CD, the
tracks don't have a gap between them; instead, they cross fade. I've
used CDex and WMP to rip the CD, but the tracks are cut off at the
end. Is there such a thing as disk at once for ripping? Can this
be accomplished using CDex or WMP?
Thanks for your input, Norma

Hi John,

This is an interesting coincidence, as I went to Iowa. I also went
to Washington State, and it is the WSU package I subscribed
to. Would you please tell me exactly what you're doing to get a live
game stream playing? I'm interested in how you are logging in, as
that particular page is virtually impossible with Jaws.

Thanks,

Hi,

I thought some people might be interested in the following pre-announcement.

Jani

Total Recorder V7.0 Will Be Released Soon!

High Criteria Inc., the world leader in computer audio recording systems,

announces the upcoming release of Total Recorder Version 7.0 and New Version

of

Video Add-on!

Total Recorder v7.0 is now becoming more powerful functionally and obtaining

more new features for users. New Total Recorder's kernel mode Driver offers

the following solutions:

list of 2 items

. Total Recorder is now fully compatible with Windows Vista (without any

limitations).

. There is no sound distortion when recording the sound from applications,

which involve the use of DirectSound (for instance, Skype 3.x).

list end

Total Recorder V7.0 Standard Edition offers a number of new features

including:

list of 3 items

. The feature of exporting/importing Total Recorder's settings and scheduled

jobs is added. It can be useful if you need to reinstall your system, move

Total Recorder from one computer to another one and for backup.

. In the new version of the program you can rename one file or a batch of

files from playlist using tag information.

. New version of Total Recorder is distinguished by higher speed and better

file compression when encoding files to FLAC format due to using the latest

version of FLAC sources.

list end

Total Recorder Professional Edition Version 7.0 includes all updates

released in the Standard Edition and has the additional changes:

list of 2 items

. Total Recorder offers the unique TimeShift feature which enables you to

exercise simultaneous listening and recording. It means that you can record

the

audio file and listen to it without waiting for the recording process to be

finished. You can also listen to the file from any position while recording

it.

. Cue-sheet files are now supported by Total Recorder. ?ue-points can be

created:

- Manually, e.g. to make a bookmark in a sound file.

- Automatically during recording session based on pause reduction, changes

of clip info in an external player, etc.

- Automatically during capturing Internet transmission when information

about a track is changed (if such information is provided by server).

A file can be splited at any time using CUE-points.

list end

We are currently working on implementing capture (rip) of

Internet-broadcasts in MP3, WMA and Ogg Vorbis formats directly without

decoding and re-encoding

(in addition to the ability of recording Internet-broadcasts of various

formats via external players). During recording you will also be able to

listen

to the steaming audio from any position of the broadcast you have already

captured.

New version of Video Add-on includes the following features:

list of 5 items

. Support of video files of the following formats is added: - Digital Video

(DV); - Windows Media Video (WMV) formats. We are currently working on

implementing

support of MPEG2 and MPEG4 formats.

. You can watch and record TV programs from TV-turner.

. Ability to record from digital DV format camera, connected to PC via

IEEE1394 interface.

. Built-in feature of turning off Video Acceleration for screen recording (a

separate utility was intended for this purpose previously).

. Performance characteristics are enhanced, so playback is improved and

saving of video files becomes faster.

list end

Our developers now are working on support simultaneous watching and

recording of Internet WMV streams.

This USB tape deck might be worth a look

2007-10-22 Thread Norma A. Boge-Conyers
Hi audiophiles, I know that there is occasional discussion regarding
tape decks and their integration with the PC I stumbled across this
tape deck, and it struck me as different because it is like the
component dual decks we are all familiar with, but it also includes
USB connectivity. The price is $149. I've pasted a little info
below but if you want more info, surf on over to
http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=15886

Convert your old cassette tapes into modern MP3 digital files with
ION Audio's USB Cassette Archiver. Not only only is the Archiver a
superior dual cassette
tape deck (it even features high-speed dubbing), it converts music
from analog tapes into digital files you can play, save and edit on
your computer. It
will integrate nicely with your home entertainment center and
connects with standard RCA jacks. Includes Audacity and EZ Tape
Converter software on CD-ROM.
Requires Microsoft Windows XP/Vista or Mac OS 9+ (Mac users will need
additional third party software for MP3 encoding).
