This is great news. Thanks, Tom, really appreciate your efforts. The pc audio list will continue, probably on groups.i o. Not because I'm too cheap to pay for website space, but because DMARC and other e-mail list constraints have made lists difficult to manage. More information to follow. Thank you all, Tom Dimeo
RE: List Termination
I guess my ISP must have a good Spam filter because I don't recall seeing any on this list. I, too, have been on the list quite a while. Although the traffic isn't steady, it is nice to have a place where I know my audio-related questions will get answered. I guess I could live with the list disappearing if someone could post subscription info for other lists where our audio questions are welcome. I hope such an animal exists. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Tom Dimeo Sent: Monday, November 13, 2017 5:34 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: List Termination Ladies and gentlemen, I am seriously considering terminating the pc audio list. There is very little traffic on the list but a lot of spam. Also, with the advent of DMARC I have no idea who is or is not receiving list messages. I could take the list to Google Groups or some other commercial e-mailing list if there is enough interest, or, maybe some one else would be interested taking on administration duties of the list. There is a cost for the domain name and web space. Jonathan Mosen started the list almost twenty years ago and it might have out lived it's usefulness. Comments are welcome. fwd: Talking Digital AM / FM HD Radio
From acb-l: Subject: [MARKETING] [EXTERNAL][VICUG-L] Talking Digital AM / FM HD Radio A little birdie has allowed us to release the following information: The new talking HD FM radio we've hinted about is due to be introduced officially to the market during the C.E.S. (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas January 8th. The radio has a form factor nearly identical to that of the Narrator. The features are also similar with some enhancements. The radio will be manufactured and sold by Audio Vox. For the general public, the radio will sell for $149, however, those with vision impairments will be allowed to use a special coupon code which will reduce the price to $99. The radio will be initially available from the Audio Vox web site http://www.audiovox.com. I'm sure Sun Sounds will be selling them also. The radio is a stereo AM/ FM HD radio with tactile buttons, a large print display, snooze / alarm / clock, presets, scan up and down, manual tuning, Auxiliary input, headphone jack. The radio announces the buttons pushed, as well as the results of a button push. For instance, it announces the name and frequency of stations as you tune. Or, it announces when you switch from FM to AM to Auxiliary.
FCC Proposes AM Radio Changes To Give The Band A Boost
For years, sports broadcasts were a staple of AM radio. But now, AM seems to be mostly a mix of talk shows and infomercials, and the Federal Communications Commission wants the band to be relevant again. AM radio once played a central role in American life. The family would gather around the Philco to hear the latest Western or detective drama. The transistor radio was where baby boomers first heard the Beatles and other Top 40 hits. And, of course, there's no better way to take in a ballgame. But the AM band is not what it used to be. Now, it's mostly a mix of talk shows and infomercials. According to the Federal Communications Commission, in the mid-1980s, AM radio still claimed 30 percent of the nation's radio listening hours. By 2010, that had dwindled to 17 percent. And among younger listeners, the number is just 4 percent. Part of the problem, says FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai, is that the AM signal is getting increasingly hard to hear. Whether you're outside and you're getting interference from a power line, or you're inside and everything from the bulbs in your house to the cable box on top of your TV send out signals that conflict with the AM radio signal, and so for broadcasters trying to reach an audience, it's more and more difficult for them to do that, Pai says. Pai and other commissioners are proposing a number of fixes for the interference problem, including making it easier for AM stations to move their signal to the FM band. They've also proposed modifying the rules that require many AM stations to power down at night. Pai says AM radio is an important source of information, especially during an emergency like a natural disaster. Keeping the medium thriving is also important for minority broadcasters, two-thirds of whom broadcast on AM. Pai also admits to some nostalgia of his own. I still remember almost 25 years ago listening to the KLKC 1540 broadcast of my high school basketball championship game in 1987, when my mom wouldn't allow me to go to the game in person so I had to go into my room, sulking a little bit, and tune it to 1540, and I listened to the broadcast that way, Pai says. That station, KLKC, in Parsons, Kan., still broadcasts high school sports, says Brandon Nivens, the general manager. He says his station is taking other steps to increase its listening audience, including streaming its signal on the Internet. Getting into the online aspect of it really helps a lot. We actually stream our AM station online, so that kind of helps reach into the digital realm and kind of get a younger demographic that way, he says. KLKC, like many in rural America, is tied to its community through local news. The station provides services that includes a swap show called The Trading Post, where on a recent day listeners offered everything from fresh-picked pecans to a used guitar amplifier for sale. It's this kind of intimate connection AM broadcasters have with their listeners, Pai says, that makes revitalizing the AM band important. Whether it's the long-haul trucker who got used to listening to a station as he or she drove across the country to kids who listen to baseball games on warm summer nights, there is something about AM radio that's really embedded in our national culture, and so long as I have a perch here at the FCC I hope to advocate for that to continue, Pai says. Not all of AM radio is struggling. In fact, five of the top 10 revenue-producing stations are on the AM dial. That's one reason Dennis Wharton of the National Association of Broadcasters is optimistic and supportive of the FCC's proposals. There's a lot to be said for AM radio, and the challenges are purely related to interference, and [if] we get those resolved, the industry is going to boom, Wharton says. The FCC is gathering public comments on the proposed rule changes and may vote on them by next spring. ###

I also recommend new TR users play around with the recording Wizard. It's a good way to get some work done right off because the program can be rather daunting for some from the get go. Re: a question about joint stereo and normal stereo
This thread reminds me of why I wondered why the remastering of the Beatles albums is such a big deal. I can appreciate Sir George and Giles Martin producing, but wouldn't all this only really sound good if on vinyl? IMHO, there is music that isn't meant to be digitized Seems there are more albums being made available on vinyl. I figure this is due to boomers with disposable income wanting to hear music as they did in their youth. Just my 2 cents... Dane, With a card reader and the Companion software, I think transferring files to the VRS is quite easy. I use a PC, so that's probably why it is so, as I'm not sure if the Companion software works on a mac. I also like the human voice prompts. However, the synthesized voices available for the VRS are, IMHO, better than nothing but not by much. Thank god for Text Aloud. Combining genres with streaming audio
Hi guys, I want several genres when listening to streaming music. For example, I want music for a party which combines rock, country and pop. Does anyone know of a service by which I can do this? I've had my Panasonic model for nearly 4 years now and I wouldn't be without it for the very reasons you've written to me in the first place smile. Re: Seeking USB/analog turntable recommendations
Hi guys, Many thanks for the great response to my inquiry. I think I am going to get a turntable with USB and analog outputs, because I like the idea of buying only 1 unit to use with my PC and rack stereo system. If I for some reason don't like what I'm getting from the turntable via USB, I guess I can then get a pre-amp and use the analog output jacks. Has anyone had any experience with the Memorex turntables which are USB/analog? Actually, now that I think about it, I may need to go with a quality traditional turntable because of the need for a separate 78 cartridge. (Thanks to the person who reminded me of that fact.) Wow, this is a little more complicated than I originally thought. You guys are great, I am learning a lot! Sirius XM Prepares for Possible Bankruptcy
The New York Times February 11, 2009 Wednesday Late Edition - Final Section B; Column 0; Business/Financial Desk; Pg. 1 780 words Satellite Radio Company Sirius XM Prepares for Possible Bankruptcy By ANDREW ROSS SORKIN and ZACHERY KOUWE Last summer, Mel Karmazin was rattling off his trademark one-liners to talk up the future of SiriusXM Radio, the combined company he ran that had just been blessed by regulators. He was planning to cut costs and expand a business that was already a fixture in the lives of millions of Americans. ''Forty-three cents a day -- it's not even vending machine coffee,'' he said at the time, parrying a question about whether the softening economy might hurt subscriptions. But now Sirius XM, the satellite radio company, has problems with much bigger price tags. It has hired advisers to prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing, people involved in the process said. That would, of course, be a grim turn of events for the normally upbeat Mr. Karmazin, Sirius XM's chief executive, who had hoped to create a mobile entertainment juggernaut with stars like Howard Stern. It is unclear how a bankruptcy would affect customers. Service is unlikely to be interrupted, but the company might have to terminate contracts with high-priced talent like Mr. Stern or Martha Stewart. A bankruptcy would make Sirius XM one of the largest casualties of the credit squeeze. With over $5 billion in assets, it would be the second-largest Chapter 11 filing so far this year, according to Capital IQ. The filing by Smurfit-Stone, with assets of $7 billion, has been the year's biggest to date. Sirius XM, which never turned a profit when both companies were independent, is laden with $3.25 billion in debt. Its business model has been dependent, in part, on the ability to roll over its enormous debts -- used to finance sending satellites into space and attract talent like Mr. Stern (who was paid $100 million a year) -- at low rates for the foreseeable future until it could turn a profit. The company's success and failure are also tied to the faltering fortunes of the automobile industry, which sells vehicles with its radio technology installed and represented the largest customer base among Sirius XM's 20 million subscribers. Sirius XM owes about $175 million in debt payments at the end of February that it is unlikely to be able to pay. Sirius XM's problems could pave the way for a takeover by EchoStar, the TV satellite company, which has bought up Sirius XM's debt. Mr. Karmazin has been locked in talks with EchoStar's chief executive, Charles W. Ergen, over Sirius XM's options, people involved in the talks said. The men are said not to get along, these people said, and Mr. Karmazin had rebuffed Mr. Ergen's takeover advances before. Sirius XM hired Joseph A. Bondi of Alvarez Marsal and Mark J. Thompson, a bankruptcy lawyer with Simpson, Thacher Bartlett, to help prepare a Chapter 11 filing, these people said. Documents and analysis are close to completion and a filing could come in days, according to a person familiar with the matter. The threat of bankruptcy could also be part of a negotiating dance with Mr. Ergen, who could decide to convert his debt into equity instead of demanding payment. In addition to the $175 million due in February, EchoStar also owns $400 million of Sirius XM's debt due in December. If Sirius XM files for bankruptcy, EchoStar could seek in court to take over the company. Mr. Ergen, however, may be able to negotiate to convert his shares before bankruptcy at an attractive rate and gain control of the company, these people said. For Mr. Karmazin, the sale or bankruptcy of Sirius XM would be one of his first failures. He founded Infinity Broadcasting, sold it to CBS and later merged the combined companies into Viacom, where he had a notoriously difficult relationship with Sumner M. Redstone, the chairman, before being ousted. Mr. Karmazin bought two million shares of Sirius XM at $1.37 a share in August. Before that, he had bought 20 million shares at an average price of $5 each. On Tuesday, Sirius closed at 11.4 cents a share. Since the summer, the company's prospects have dimmed. ''I'm not trying to paint the rosy picture, because we have challenges connected to our liquidity and certainly our stock price is dreadful,'' Mr. Karmazin said in December. ''But, you know, our revenues are growing double digits. We're growing subscribers. We're not losing subscribers.'' A spokeswoman for Mr. Karmazin declined to comment. A spokesman for EchoStar could not be reached. Mr. Karmazin staked the success of the merger on nearly $400 million in annual cost savings and the potential to gain subscribers through deals with auto companies to put satellite radios into cars. But satellite radio failed to win over many younger listeners, and competition from other sources slowed subscriber growth. ###

PC not recognizing Muvo T-100
Hi people, I took advantage of the great price on the Creative Muvo T-100 but I'm off to an ominous start. Simply put, I cannot get my PC to recognize the unit. I plugged it into a USB port on the front of my PC, but I don't see it in My Computer or Windows Explorer. RE: Ripping with WMP 11
Albert, I have been through all Option tabs and things are set to my liking. I did tell WMP to rip when a CD is inserted, just as a test, and the tracks were ripped, but the gap between tracks was also there which I do not want. I prefer to not have WMP rip automatically, but my problem is that I cannot activate the button which would actually start a rip. Thanks for your help, Norma At 09:37 PM 07/24/2008, you wrote: Have you been to the options menu so you could select the folder where the ripped files will go? If you have, what happens after you open the player? You can set it up to rip automatically after you close the drive door or to wait until you open the player and press the rip button. Of course, you can set it to have you decide all the setting each time. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Norma A. Not hearing some XP sounds
Hi people, I'm using a Windows XP machine and I suddenly find myself not able to hear some Windows sounds. For example, I don't hear the tunes when Windows starts or ends. And I don't hear the sound when I connect my Bookport to my PC, using the USB, of course. And I can't hear an error chord, like when I want to unload Jaws. (BTW, Jaws is running through a separate external speaker, not the PC speakers.) I looked through the audio properties under the Volume control and either I'm missing something or I need to look elsewhere. So, please help preserve what little sanity I have left...:) Thanks, Norma Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mixer, pre-amp or both?
Hi guys, I have a digital piano I would like to use to do some recording on my PC. The only output jack is called headphone/line out. The level is not high enough to get an adequate signal to my sound card. I am thinking I need a pre-amp, but don't know what to get. I am also wondering if I need a mixer as well. I am thinking I will because I will also have some vocals using a mic. I'm just getting started with all this, it is strictly a hobby, so spending a lot of bread is not really what I'm looking to do. NPR launches effort to make radio fully accessible
Press Release Source: Harris Corporation NPR, Harris Corporation and Towson University Launch Global Effort To Make Radio Accessible to Hearing and Sight Impaired Tuesday January 8, 12:00 pm ET First Over-The-Air Transmission From Special CES Station LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (LVCC S227) -- NPR, Harris Corporation and Towson University today announced a new initiative to make radio more accessible to the hundreds of millions of hearing and visually impaired people around the world. At a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the three organizations announced the global accessible radio technology initiative and provided the first live demonstration of the accessible radio technology. The group also announced a new research center for developing future technologies on the campus of Towson University near Baltimore, MD. Additional plans call for the establishment of an international consortium of equipment manufacturers, broadcasters and other organizations to help foster broad adoption of the initiative. The initiative will be spearheaded by the three founding organizations and will leverage cutting-edge HD Radio(TM) technology to enable hearing-impaired people to see live radio content on specially equipped receivers by applying television closed-captioning processes to radio broadcasts. The technology also will provide audio cues and voice prompts, as well as advanced radio reading services, for those visually impaired and blind. Digital radio technology makes it possible -- for the first time -- to serve the sensory impaired, says Mike Starling, vice president and chief technology officer of NPR. Beyond developing the technology, this initiative will ensure the accessibility of these radio services at minimal costs. During the press conference, the organizations showcased the first over- the-air transmission of the accessible radio technology using a signal from WX3NPR, a special temporary station authorized by the FCC for the live broadcast. Attendees at the press conference watched the text transcript of the NPR flagship morning news magazine Morning Edition on the HD Radio receiver's viewing screen, which is what a hearing-impaired listener will see using the technology. Additionally, the demonstration carried a digital radio reading service that will assist the visually impaired with daily readings of current books, newspapers and magazines. Following the demonstration, the participating organizations unveiled details for the International Center for Accessible Radio Technology (ICART), which will be headquartered at Towson University in Towson, MD. Towson will house the primary administrative and academic research office for the initiative, with NPR Labs in Washington, DC, providing technology RD and software development, and Harris Corporation supplying transmission and research support at its radio broadcast technology center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Members of the global initiative went on to detail plans to further study and understand the challenges faced by the sensory-impaired population in accessing radio broadcasts, and develop methodologies to address those issues through cutting-edge technologies. To ensure that the effort represents the widest range of participants and fosters the broadest possible adoption, organizers said they will work to bring together policymakers, broadcasters, transmission equipment companies and receiver manufacturers from around the world. Presently, the initiative has more than a dozen members, representing virtually every aspect of the microphone to loudspeaker chain: broadcasters, network content providers, infrastructure and transmission equipment companies, and receiver manufacturers. In addition to founding members NPR, Harris and Towson University, supporting organizations include iBiquity Digital Corporation, elphi, NDS, Radiosophy, Helen Keller Institute, Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media at WGBH(NCAM), Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons, and the G3ict, an Advocacy Initiative of the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development. NPR, Harris and Towson will jointly determine strategic direction of the organization, with assistance from the initiative's full membership. NPR will provide much of the content, Harris will provide much of the transmission- related technologies, and Towson will provide research into the needs of the sensory-disabled population and will house the primary ICART facility on its campus. We're working very closely with radio stations around the world to ensure they have the right technical infrastructure in place for this initiative, said Howard Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harris Corporation. The new HD Radio transmission systems we're installing are tailor-made for this effort, as their digital capabilities will make it relatively easy for stations to transmit live textual
Incomplete ripped tracks
Hi guysI'm trying to rip Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and am encountering a problem. For those who are familiar with this CD, the tracks don't have a gap between them; instead, they cross fade.
