To do this, your player must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to "bookshelf" books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library digital book player to the latest software: Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site: http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page two links. I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work, return to the page and download the second link. After you click the link from the web site and download the file to your computer, extract (unzip) this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive, etc.) so that the directory "upgrade" appears in the "root" directory of the drive. This procedure is exactly the same as you use to download a book. Turn on the player. Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the player. The player will announce "Upgrading your player's software." Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10 seconds), then remove the flash drive. The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge will not repeat the upgrade. You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you downloaded to undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to download books and magazines. To employ the bookshelf feature, turn the player on. Press and hold the Play/Stop button until you hear the narrator announce the activation of the bookshelf feature. Continue to hold down the Play/Stop button and press either the FF or the RW arrow-shaped key to either side of the Play/Stop button. As you push and release these keys, the player will announce the next title on the flash drive. Once you get to the end of the titles saved on the drive, you must utilize the other direction key to toggle back through the titles. No; you have to get your flash drives (thumb drives..whatever you want to call them)..elsewhere; the American Printing House For The Blind has "blank cartridges" that you can also use to download books as well! I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players but books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you weren't supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old talking book players! I've never really heard a definitive answer for that one; all I know is: people used to do it all the time (played their records on the talking book machines)..now it might be a thing where..the needles were bigger..and the grooves in the old talking book records were bigger; I don't know for sure..but oh yeah..playing record albums on talking book machines was a practice that people did a lot! Hi Don and list: Well..I don't know if I mean "sampling rate" or "bit rate" (I was trying to bring it up to a level where the VIP Conduit chat site's "music player" would play it (it's kind of finicky about what it'll play)..if the (I think this is what I mean)..bit rate is small, it doesn't seem to know how to deal with it..and will just "lock up!" But what you're saying means perfect sense to me (certain programs (sound editors)..work better in different situations. As I stated earlier: I mainly got Total Recorder so I could record different shows..especially works in situations where I'm not going to be here! I recently learned (thanks in part to this list)..learned how to use Total Recorder to change and convert files. Gold Wave VS Total Recorder On Changing Bit Rate
Hello list: Hopefully this won't take too long to explain..but I ran across an interesting problem: I had a file I needed to change the bit rate on, so I could play it in VIP's "Chat client (in it's original form, it would not play in that chat window) I said "no problem; will just run it through "Total Recorder and all will be well!" Not so! I tried lowering; I tried raising..no soap! But I have a friend who has "Gold Wave"..and he converted it to a bit rate that was suitable for this particular chat client (works just fine!" So my conclusion: Total Recorder doesn't give you the same amount of "bit rate choices" as Gold Wave! Is this accurate? I've never had ""Gold Wave" on my system before, so know nothing about it! But after this experience (if what I'm thinking is true)..this might give me a reason to go get "Gold Wave!" Hi list: This may be considered a stupid question by some on here..but am gonna ask it anyway: what (exactly)..is a "WAX" file? Here's my reason for asking: a little while back, I managed to save something (or at least I thought I was saving it)..the program in question was a show that had been archived on the WSM (Nashville Tennessee Radio station)..website; at that time, I had no way to record the program, so I was able to "save it (the file in question is a "WAX" file; the site has since changed..and that particular show has been removed..and the file that I saved? Well..it no longer will play! I tried converting it to an MP3 file, thinking it might play. But I got a message saying that the file was not a "legitimate sound file (or something to that effect)..it suggested that I "play the file and record it"..which..of course, won't work for me because the file no longer play! So I guess my question is: is there any way I can make this file play? Or is it "dead in the water".and the only thing I now can do with the file is to "delete it?" Hopefully I have explained this clearly enough so it is understandable! Thanks for listening. Tom Kaufman To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Re: Recording audio such as Sirius from my PC
Nancy: You might give a program called "Total Recorder" a try; this is what I use for recording audio streams from the internet. It has a scheduler, so you can record a show..even if you have to be away; it does other things too that others on here can talk about more intelligently than I..suffice it to say that I think it would serve your needs for recording things from Sirius..or any other thing that you'd want to record! Re: airport express and airfoil was question about ccrane transmitter
Hello Brett and list: Yeah..that's how I use my transmitter (I haven't read books there)..but often times, if I want to listen to WSM while taking my shower, I bring the stream up on the computer; then turn on this little dinky clock radio I have in the bathroom! Re: C-Crane Transmitter Question
To John and Dane: this "Airport thing sounds like it'd be more trouble; you've got to have a speaker here; a speaker there..I like how the transmitter works as far as just being able to turn on a radio..and you can hear the computer (I had thought it used to be louder)..but maybe not; also, often I have to turn the radio up loud enough to hear the thing I'm listening to..and get a bit of a hum! Oh well..I've lived with it all this time (got the transmitter in the Christmas of 04)..this amplifier thing that John talks about might be a thought; mainly wanted to see if what I'm experiencing is normal for this transmitter (I can make it as loud as the station should sound)..aw but then the "s" sounds sound distorted! C-Crane Transmitter Question
Hello list: I have the C-Crane FM transmitter, which I use to hear what's on my computer when I'm not in the same room; I've noticed for a while now that..the volume that's coming through my radios isn't as loud as it should be; yet..if I make it louder by turning up the volume on the transmitter, then the light blinks, indicating that the volume is too loud; it also causes the sound on whatever radio I'm listening through to become a little distorted! Is this normal; in other words..is it normal to not quite get the same volume coming through the transmitter as what comes through any other "FM" station? Hopefully I am explaining this correctly! The sound card I'm running is an Audigy 2..if this is of any help! Thanks ahead of time. Tom Kaufman To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Re: c.dex problem still not solved

I don't know if this has anything to do with it..but I find (with this JVC stereo receiver I have)..I'm running some old Technique speakers"..and while the base response is adequate, it's not a real hard thumping base; don't know if it's the speakers or the stereo receiver itself (I keep the base wide-open..and it's there..but wouldn't mind a little bit more! Re: a question about joint stereo and normal stereo
Well Brett and list: To show you how it's gotten to be, I have a friend (great steel guitarist)..he recorded some songs..I guess it was fifteen years ago..maybe more..a few years ago, he put those tunes on a CD (along with some other stuff he'd done)..well I have a cassette tape of this one song (the click track is still on it)..but the tone of that steel just sounds so nice! Well when they put it on CD, although it's the same guy; same tune and all..it doesn't have that good, smooth tone as it has on that old cassette I have of him doing it! I remember him telling me that (and I've found this out for myself)..in the digital world, if you turn the volume down, it goes down to a point; then just cuts off! It's this way on my JVC stereo receiver; when it gets to a certain point, instead of the sound continuing to taper off, it just "cuts off completely!" In my opinion, I don't think they'll ever be able to re-create that sound they had back then as the world of "digital equipment" just doesn't allow for it! Yeah..and now it doesn't even have that same intensity anymore; when I listen to a stereo recording, it almost sounds now like the same instruments are coming through both channels! CD Ripping Question
Hi list: Am wondering if it's possible to (when using "Windows Media (or maybe it's "windows)..to rip CDs)..to just rip the cuts that you want, as opposed to ripping the entire CD? Let me explain; then you can tell me if this thing is actually using "Windows Media"..or the Windows utility; I put the CD in the drive; then it'll ask me what I want to do; if I want to rip, I'll choose )Rip with Windows Media"..then the ripping process begins. Aw but maybe I don't want to put every track on..just one; can this be done using a screenreader? In my case, the scrreenreader is Jaws 11; the Operating System is Windows XP Home edition.
