I'd also suggest taking your digital player and flash drive with you. That
way you can make sure you get the right thing. They may also help with
plugging the flash drive directly into the player.

Yeh, it's a USB extension cable. You can further clarify that you need
a full male connector on one end and a full female connector on the
other end.
Note that even if you get a USB extension cable, you may still not be
able to fit the NLS cartridge into the female end because of the
limited clearance on the cartridge.

Most flash drives should work just fine though, although you can also
plug them directly into the NLS player.

A PNY has a removable cap. you will find an end that has a hole for a
lanyard, and the other end of the drive has a cap that comes off exposing
the male connector.

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on
the

right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive
should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one
way,

so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable
needed to connect a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a
standard USB extension cable. This will have a full sized male
connector at one end and a full size female connector at the other
end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS cartridge, many USB
extension cables aren't going to work, and you may find it best to buy
a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to work with the
NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on
this list, the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good
information. It's also well organized and well thought out. I think it
will clarify a lot and won't appear as contradictory as separate posts
to a mailing list may seem to be.

Hello Tom,
If you feel the right side of your player, you will find a headphone jack.
Right behind it, is the USB port. It does have a plastic cover over it.
If you remove that cover, the USB port will be exposed.
Right there, is where you will plug in your new thumb drive.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

High Randy,
No, if you need a flash drive, you will have to buy one.
I found in my experience, that having a cartridge that was made just
for the NLS player, works best.

You can get them from:
http://www.aph.org
But the only thing is, you'll have to wait until next month.
They have them on back order.
Also keep in mind, you will need a USB extension cord in order to plug
those cartridges in to your computer to put anything on them.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

The Bookshelf Upgrade

You might want to download several books or magazines to a flash drive
and then listen to any of them in some random order. To do this, your
player must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to
"bookshelf" books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library
digital book player to the latest software:

Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site:
http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page two
links. I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work,
return to the page and download the second link.
After you click the link from the web site and download the file to
your computer, extract (unzip) this file onto a flash drive (thumb
drive, etc.) so that the directory "upgrade" appears in the "root"
directory of the drive. This procedure is exactly the same as you use
to download a book.

Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of
the player.

The player will announce "Upgrading your player's software."
Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10
seconds), then remove the flash drive.
The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the
version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge
will not repeat the upgrade.

You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you
downloaded to undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to
download books and magazines.

To employ the bookshelf feature, turn the player on. Press and hold
the Play/Stop button until you hear the narrator announce the
activation of the bookshelf feature. Continue to hold down the
Play/Stop button and press either the FF or the RW arrow-shaped key to
either side of the Play/Stop button. As you push and release these
keys, the player will announce the next title on the flash drive.
Once you get to the end of the titles saved on the drive, you must
utilize the other direction key to toggle back through the titles. In
other words, you cannot continue to use only the FF or the RW key to
toggle through the titles in a circuit-type action. Release the
Play/Stop button when you reach the item to which you desire to
listen.

I use my Radio Shack-purchased flash drive all the time without a problem,
and they're both much cheaper and capable of larger memory than those
produced specifically for NLS program. Just avoid SanDisk, which has files
that require a downloaded program to uninstall in order to make it
functions strictly as a memory stick.

Re: Ditgetel Talking Player Revisited

2010-03-24 Thread Tom Kaufman
I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're
naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players but
books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you weren't
supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old talking book
players! I've never really heard a definitive answer for that one; all I
know is: people used to do it all the time (played their records on the
talking book machines)..now it might be a thing where..the needles were
bigger..and the grooves in the old talking book records were bigger; I don't
know for sure..but oh yeah..playing record albums on talking book machines
was a practice that people did a lot! But I'm fairly certain that..if one
had talked with their librarian..I'm sure they would have said "Oh no;
you're not supposed to play records on these machines!"

Re: Gold Wave VS Total Recorder On Changing Bit Rate

2010-01-20 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi Don and list: Well..I don't know if I mean "sampling rate" or "bit rate"
(I was trying to bring it up to a level where the VIP Conduit chat site's
"music player" would play it (it's kind of finicky about what it'll
play)..if the (I think this is what I mean)..bit rate is small, it doesn't
seem to know how to deal with it..and will just "lock up!" But what you're
saying means perfect sense to me (certain programs (sound editors)..work
better in different situations. As I stated earlier: I mainly got Total
Recorder so I could record different shows..especially works in situations
where I'm not going to be here! I recently learned (thanks in part to this
list)..learned how to use Total Recorder to change and convert files. But
apparently (as Robert pointed out)..when it comes to changing the bit rate
(if that's the term)..you have more of a margin to work with in Gold Wave!

Gold Wave VS Total Recorder On Changing Bit Rate

2010-01-20 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: Hopefully this won't take too long to explain..but I ran across an
interesting problem: I had a file I needed to change the bit rate on, so I
could play it in VIP's "Chat client (in it's original form, it would not play
in that chat window) I said "no problem; will just run it through "Total
Recorder and all will be well!" Not so! I tried lowering; I tried raising..no
soap! But I have a friend who has "Gold Wave"..and he converted it to a bit
rate that was suitable for this particular chat client (works just fine!" So
my conclusion: Total Recorder doesn't give you the same amount of "bit rate
choices" as Gold Wave! Is this accurate? I've never had ""Gold Wave" on my
system before, so know nothing about it! But after this experience (if what
I'm thinking is true)..this might give me a reason to go get "Gold Wave!"
Thanks for listening..and hope someone can shed some light on this; hopefully
I've explained it clearly enough!

WAX File Extension

2010-01-14 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi list: This may be considered a stupid question by some on here..but am
gonna ask it anyway: what (exactly)..is a "WAX" file? Here's my reason for
asking: a little while back, I managed to save something (or at least I thought
I was saving it)..the program in question was a show that had been archived on
the WSM (Nashville Tennessee Radio station)..website; at that time, I had no
way to record the program, so I was able to "save it (the file in question is a
"WAX" file; the site has since changed..and that particular show has been
removed..and the file that I saved? Well..it no longer will play! I tried
converting it to an MP3 file, thinking it might play. But I got a message
saying that the file was not a "legitimate sound file (or something to that
effect)..it suggested that I "play the file and record it"..which..of course,
won't work for me because the file no longer play! So I guess my question is:
is there any way I can make this file play? Or is it "dead in the water".and
the only thing I now can do with the file is to "delete it?" Hopefully I have
explained this clearly enough so it is understandable! Thanks for listening.

C-Crane Transmitter Question

2010-01-08 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: I have the C-Crane FM transmitter, which I use to hear what's on
my computer when I'm not in the same room; I've noticed for a while now
that..the volume that's coming through my radios isn't as loud as it should be;
yet..if I make it louder by turning up the volume on the transmitter, then the
light blinks, indicating that the volume is too loud; it also causes the sound
on whatever radio I'm listening through to become a little distorted! Is this
normal; in other words..is it normal to not quite get the same volume coming
through the transmitter as what comes through any other "FM" station?
Hopefully I am explaining this correctly! The sound card I'm running is an
Audigy 2..if this is of any help! Thanks ahead of time.

to make it just rip the tracks I want--smile! In a way, I almost don't mind
ripping a whole CD; it's just that..don't want to be taking up more space
than I need to!

Re: CD Ripping Question

2009-12-02 Thread Tom Kaufman
I'm not positively sure of this as I haven't used Cdex in quite sometime!
But it seems like it puts it in your "my music" folder! Am sure someone who
knows a little more than I can give more specific directions! BTW will try
Dave's suggestion and see if it'll actually put the tracks in; now tell me
this: will it also tag the files as Windows Media does?

Re: CD Ripping Question

2009-12-02 Thread Tom Kaufman
No no no! I'm afraid it just doesn't work that way; I start Cdex..no..wait
a minute; I put the CD in; it gives me those choices, so I make that go
away..then I start Cdex; is this wrong?

Re: CD Ripping Question

2009-12-02 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi Judy and list: Would have to go through there again..but in past times,
when I looked in the Cdex menus, I saw nothing that indicated to me as to
how I was to do this! I'm not saying that Cdex can't do it; only saying
that I'm not seeming to find the right thing that allows me to make Cdex
title the tracks.

Re: CD Ripping Question

2009-12-01 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi Christopher and list: Afraid I don't really know where to go in WMP
(windows Media Player)..to make that magic happen! I just figured it would
save me from having to rip the whole CD..just to get two or three songs I
might want; I used to use Cdex; it was great for ripping just one (or
whatever number of files at a time that you wanted)..but I never learned how
to make Cdex title the tracks like WMP will! The gentleman who was talking
about using that feature is right; it puts you right into Windows Media..and
starts the "ripping" process.

CD Ripping Question

2009-12-01 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi list: Am wondering if it's possible to (when using "Windows Media (or maybe
it's "windows)..to rip CDs)..to just rip the cuts that you want, as opposed to
ripping the entire CD? Let me explain; then you can tell me if this thing is
actually using "Windows Media"..or the Windows utility; I put the CD in the
drive; then it'll ask me what I want to do; if I want to rip, I'll choose )Rip
with Windows Media"..then the ripping process begins. Aw but maybe I don't
want to put every track on..just one; can this be done using a screenreader?
In my case, the scrreenreader is Jaws 11; the Operating System is Windows XP
Home edition. If this is something that can't be done, no "biggie"..just
wondering if it can be accomplished without too much muss of fuss...thanks!

Re: A Total Recorder Question

2009-11-26 Thread Tom Kaufman
Success! It worked! This all started when this particular tune wouldn't
play in one of the music rooms at a site called VIP Conduit! I had heard
that, sometimes by changing the bit rate, a file would then play! Oh but I
never knew how to do it (I know some people have "Gold Wave"..and do file
conversions that way. Then I remembered that I had heard that Total
Recorder would do this; since I'm on this PC Audio list, I figured I'd see
if there was anybody here that could explain how this process was done!
Thank you all for your indulgence!

I spoke too soon; I can get as far as doing the control-O to open and then
look for my file. But then..once I've found the file, "Alt-F" does nothing!
What am I doing wrong?

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is what I was looking for (and apparently wasn't
asking it right)..now then..if I want to change the bit rate of a file, do
these same instructions generally apply? Thanks!

how to get to it with Total Recorder opened..but I haven't figured out what
to do once I get to my file.

Hello Milton and list: The file in question is an MP3 file. My copy of

file (that I didn't record, using "Total Recorder"..and how do I change the
bit rate!

I'm talking about a file that I have on my external hard drive; I have it in
a folder..what I'd like to do is to change the bit rate. But how do I
connect it with "Total Recorder?" This file is in no way connected with
Total Recorder. Hopefully I have cleared this up!

Um..afraid this doesn't tell me much; let me explain further: what I want to
do is to take an already existing file that I have on my computer (actually
it's on my external drive)..and change the bit rate. If this can be done in
Total Recorder 7 (standard)..what do I do to make this magic happen?

I've found that (and your situation may be way different than mine)..but If
I have it set to "What You Hear"..I can record most anything I need to
record! Again..your situation may be different as I am using Total Recorder
7 (Standard)..but this is what works for me as far as recording things from
Winamp, Windows Media..whatever.
