Re: Audacity 2.2.0 has been released
Hi Don, In the case of Audacity, the only two differences between using the installer and the portable version are: 1. If you use the installer, the installed version is automatically available to all users on the computer. 2. The portable version does not include a copy of the manual. However, you can download this separately if you wish. David. original message: I have a related question. I note that there is a full install version and a portable version of Audacity. Hello David, The way I accomplish this task is by pressing shift-a while the file is playing. This stops the file and places the cursor at that place. Then press shift-end and that will select to the end of the file. In the new version of Audacity, a different command than shift-a is used and you'd have to ask somebody who uses that version or consult David Bales's guide on Audacity with JAWS. Audacity Simple Question/Selecting from Cursor Position to End of Track and Deleting the Selection
Hello. I am just beginning to learn how to use Audacity to copy some old tape recordings into mp3 format using an NLS C-1 tape player. I have successfully installed the Lame encoder for saving to mp3 format. I'm trying to do something which should be very simple. At times, I have a few extra seconds of audio at the end of a track that I want to delete. What I want to do is to select from the cursor position or from where I stopped playback up to the end of the track and delete that selection. I see several options in the Edit menu under Select which seems to be what I want but they never seem to work. I wind up deleting everything or I select audio in the other direction. Could someone please advise. Also, I am able to monitor what is on the tape while recording. I'm also trying to monitor the tape prior to recording and this doesn't seem to be happening. I'd welcome any advice. I don't need a lot of handholding as I like to think I'm a quick learner. Many thanks. -- David Goldfield, Assistive Technology Specialist WWW.David-Goldfield.Com<http://WWW.David-Goldfield.Com>

A work around is to include the file extension in the file name edit box, that is, type in a file name such as fred.wav, rather than just fred. Audacity 2.1.1 released
Audacity 2.1.1 has been released, and can be downloaded from the Audacity website: http://audacityteam.org/ A direct link to the download is: http://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.1.1.exe I've updated my guide to Audacity for Jaws users, and it's available here: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.1.1-Guide.html The guide is also nearly all applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes. Audacity 2.1.1 includes the following new features which are relevant to the users of screen readers: 1. The transport status is now the first item in the status bar. This tells you whether Audacity is stopped, playing or recording, and whether it is Paused. 2. There are four new playback keystrokes for checking a selected time range. 3. There are two new playback keystrokes to help with aligning and pasting. 4. You can now move to the first track or the last track by pressing ctrl+home or ctrl+end respectively. 5. You can now assign shortcuts to the commands for moving a track up, down, to top, or to bottom. The names of the commands are move focused track up, down, to top, and to bottom. In the Introduction of the Jaws guide, there's a sub section on new features, where either details or links to the details of these new features are given. David.
Re: Audacity help needed
Hi, In audacity to select some audio so that you can apply an effect, you have to select one or more tracks, and a time range. So in your case where you want to apply an effect to all the audio in one of the tracks, then: 1. Make sure that the desired track is selected, and the other one is not selected. (pressing enter toggles whether a track is selected). 2. Select a time range which covers all the audio in the selected track. To do this press J to move the cursor to the start of the audio in the select track, and then press shift+K to move the end of the selected time range to the end of the audio in the selected track. 3. apply the effect. Note that you can also change speed using the sliding time scale/pitch shift effect, if you set the initial and final tempo change settings to the same value. This effect produces better quality audio, but takes longer. When you say picture fact broken, what do you mean by this? For your information there's an Audacity4Blind mailing list on freelists: http://www.freelists.org/list/audacity4blind And there'a also a guide to Audacity for jaws users, which is also nearly all applicable to users of nvda and window-eyes: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.1.0-Guide.html David. original message: Hi, I have to music tracks. Re: Audacity questions
Hi, assuming this 10 mins which you want to delete is in the middle of the audio (that is, not at the end or the beginning): 1. Make sure the track is selected. Pressing enter toggles whether the track is selected. 2. Move the cursor to the beginning of the section you want to delete. One way of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, and then press shift+a at the desired position. The latter keystroke stops playback and moves the cursor to that position. Note that during playback you can use the left and right arrow keys to jump backwards or forwards by small increments and shift + left and right arrow keys to jump by larger increments. 3. Start playback again, and when you get to the end of the section which you want to delete press the right bracket key (which is two to the right of the p key). This sets the end of the selected time range to where you pressed the right bracket key. 4. Press the delete key, to delete the selected audio. 5. Export the audio to a new file (export audio is on the file menu). Additional notes: If the section of audio which you wanted to delete was the the beginning, then: 1. make sure the track is selected. 2. Move the cursor to the end of the section you want to delete. 3. press shift+home to set the start of the selected time range to the start. 4. press delete. If the section of the audio is at the end: 1. make sure the track is selected. 2. move the cursor to the start of the section you want to delete. 3. press shift+end to set the end of the selected time range to the end. 4. press delete. further help with audacity, please?
Hi friends, I am Dave Trevino's wife and have more Audacity questions: 1. Are there any tutorials that can take me from the very beginning? I have used Studeo Recorder for editing but that's my only experience. 2. The file I want to work with is a conference call with superimposed (or background) voices. I want to remove the background voices from the file. 3. I don't understand the parameters in the noise reduction feature as to DB settings, etc. My attempt to use the NR resulted in lower volume of my total file and limited success with removing the offending background speech. Suggestions appreciated. 4. I'm trying to do all this without laying out any cash! Thanks for help. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Re: further help with audacity, please?
Deb, I don't have much experience with Audacity but I do have some experience with noise reduction. What it sounds as though is happening is that you may have included too much in the sample of noise that you extracted when you started with the noise reduction process. I think that was covered in a previous note, but the first thing you have to do is to isolate a sample of the noise you want to remove that does not include anything you want to keep. If, for example, you got some of the voices in the noise sample that you want to keep, Audacity or any other noise reduction software would include those voices as part of the noise you wanted to remove. However, noise reduction works best on constant noise. Therefore, it is also possible that noise reduction techniques may not do a good job of getting rid of background voices since they are not steady. It is still worth a try, though, as noise reduction may help some. Re: noise reduction with Audacity
Hi Dave, the noise removal effect in audacity involves two steps. The first is to get a noise profile, and the second is to use that for noise removal. Step one - get noise profile. 1. Select a small section of audio where there's only background noise. To do this first make sure the track is selected (pressing enter toggles whether the track is selected). Then select a time range which contains only background noise. One way of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, press left bracket (next to letter p) where you want the start of the time range, press right bracket where you want the end of the time range, and press spacebar to stop. If you now press spacebar, this will playback only the time range, and so you can check that you've got just background noise. 2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens. 3. press the get noise profile button. The dialog closes. Step two - use the profile for noise removal. 1. Select all the audio. You can do this by pressing ctrl+a. 2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens. 3. There are a number of settings for noise removal in the dialog, but to accept the defaults, just tab to the ok button and press it. There is more info on noise removal on this page from the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/noise_removal.html And there's more info for users of screen readers in this guide: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.0.5-Guide.html David. original message: Hi everybody, I'm attempting to use Audacity to remove background noise from a sound file. Re: noise reduction with Audacity
I don't know whether I can be of much help, but I heard someone use Audacity with noise reduction. It seems like it took out the noise, but it didn't seem to lose any sound quality, and still kept the highs. That sounded that way to me. There were none of the artifacts like I noticed when I used the Soundforge Noise Reduction; so it may sound good for you then. - Original Message - From: Dave Trevino dctrev...@bellsouth.net To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2014 12:45 PM Subject: noise reduction with Audacity Hi everybody, I'm attempting to use Audacity to remove background noise from a sound file. What Happened to Jene's tutorial? I know Rick had it at some point, but who knows now. Yeah it's old, but just like Jonathan Mozen's Sound Forge one, it's still usible since you use the software the same way at the very basics. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joe Bollard Sent: Friday, February 14, 2014 5:52 AM To: pc- audio Subject: audacity tutorial hello friends, i have audacity on my laptop, windows seven and jaws 11, i'm looking for an accessible tutorial for audacity, any help will be really appreciated, travel safely, joe.

Help with Audacity
Hi all can anyone help with the change speed feature of Audacity? Just don't understand the dialogue compared to the pitch effect in GoldWave. Perhaps it's because I work by semitone and not percentage. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- Regards Chris
Re: Help with Audacity
I know the change pitch is with notes and not percentages. that is really the only part of this program I have worked with. I like Audacity since it does use the notes rather than the percentages. but I don't know why speed would work with notes instead of percentages. Audacity question
Hi there I've been happily using audacity to put a project together. However, something's happened now that is confusing me. I am trying to use a multi track setting to load tracks in one after the other. This was going fine but now I seem to be stuck in a table view. I can't arrow up and down to go to individual tracks. I don't know what I've done. Any ideas? Thanks and apologies for the duel posting. Issue with soundcards and playback using Audacity
Hi there Hoping someone can help. I'm baffled as to what's happening. I've got a laptop running the latest version of Audacity along with Jaws 14. I'm also using a USB Blue Yeti microphone which I plug headphones into. I've got JAWS going through the microphone, checked through the sound card menu with JAWS utilities. I've also checked the Blue Yeti mic in the input and output devices in Audacity. The issue I have is when I import a track into Audacity and hit play JAWS vanishes. The track plays, but JAWS goes silent. If I unplug the mic and put it straight back in again then JAWS is back through the headphones. There's obviously an issue with the playback options, but I'm honestly at a loss what it might be. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. RE: Issue with soundcards and playback using Audacity
Nope. That hasn't worked. There's no effects tab either. Strange thing I've noticed now as well is that JAWS only knocks off after a number of seconds. If I hit play within Audacity and only let it go for about four seconds it's fine. Any longer and it goes. The simple workaround is to unplug the USB mic all the time, but this is annoying and will wear down the USB hub connector eventually. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Steve Nutt Sent: 21 January 2014 10:13 To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Issue with soundcards and playback using Audacity Hi, Go to the soundcard's properties. Re: multi tracking with audacity
Hi Joe, from your first message, I understood that the tracks started out in sync, but drifted out of sync after a time. Is this the case? If the tracks are out of sync by the same amount throughout the tracks, then there's a latency correction within audacity which you can set. David. original message: could this be a synchronize issue between the two tracks? Could you for instance, replicate the problem in reaper? Thanks Joe

Re: multi tracking with audacity
Hi Joe, you should be fine with that cpu and ram. I don't know what the problem is, perhaps other background tasks are taking up some of the computer's resources. could this be a synchronize issue between the two tracks? Could you for instance, replicate the problem in reaper? RE: Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording
Hi Ted, concerning the latency in Audacity. There is a setting for a latency correction in audacity. In the preferences dialog, in the recording category, there's a latency correction edit box. The default value of the correction is -130ms, and the more negative the value, the larger the correction. There are a couple of ways of adjusting this value so that tracks line up correctly. 1. The first is just to use trial and error. You don't need to get it more accurate than about 10ms. 2. The second is to use a method such as the one described in a guide to audacity for jaws users, which is available at: http://goo.gl/Qi2CeD In the recording section of this guide, there's a sub section on latency correction. In addition to these two methods, I'm aware that someone is working on a plug-in to partly automate the measurement of the latency, but I'm not sure when this will be available, David. original message: Personally, I could not get tracks to sync up together so that they sounded correctly like they would in sonar or reaper. If someone could tell me how to make tracks line up the way they are supposed to, I would give it a try again. For example, while recording vocals, my second harmony part would not stay with the first, and I did not know how to make it line up. That is my two cents worth.

Is there any particular reason why you were using the 64-Bit version? There's no difference in features between 32 and 64 Bit, only difference is for the plug-ins you can add on. Don't know where you got that from, Reaper supports all platforms and I'm using it here on Mac and under Windows. Why should you pay? Well you don't have to if you don't want the product and that's entirely up to you but comparing Audacity to Reaper is like comparing Apples to Oranges as they're totally different. Now for those who are considering the purchase of Reaper - when I purchased a licence - it was $50.00 and that licence covered multi platforms.
