Hello everyone, I've been attempting to record using the recording facility in windows. I am not sure how it works and whether it's faily accessible. I am using windows 7 at the moment. Has anyone tried this? I don't know if JFW or other Windows screen readers have a way to program these things easily. I’ve had a Focus 40 Braille Display now for just over a fortnight and these devices are truly amazing. So you’re asking, what does a Braille Display have to do with audio? Well normally not a lot but in my case quite a bit. I’ve done some programming of the display so that I can perform various functions using chorded commands from the perkins style keyboard behind the row of 40 Braille cells. I can for example manipulate Skype by using chords to answer/end calls, put calls on hold, merge calls together etc, I’m using the Mac to do this but I can’t see any reason why this couldn’t be done on a Windows PC. Its absolutely glorious being able to read and take notes on a Braille display whilst chatting, I find listening to a computer voice whilst talking a major annoyance. So here I am sitting comfortably on my couch with my Mac on the desk, my headphones on and my Braille display on my knee typing away and ready to answer any incoming Skype calls at the touch of a spacebar-A chord on the display, it just doesn’t get much better than this. ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
Re: Skype Doesn't Get Much Better Than This
That’s something I’m about to find out . I didn’t have to do all that much with the Mac at all, there’s a place in the VoiceOver Braille section where you can define shortcuts and actions from the Braille Display and this includes chorded commands, front panel commands and so on, I didn’t think it would be so easy and honestly thought that I’d have to use a Macro editor for the Mac, I have some of those. The other way I thought it might be possible to control things from the Display itself was by the use of the “Automator”, similar to scripting if you like but its probably best compared to the old DOS JAWS versions Macro editor where you select the functions you want in the order you want and thus select the actions you wish taken. > On 19 Oct 2015, at 9:48 AM, Brent Harding <br...@hostany.net> wrote: > > I don't know if JFW or other Windows screen readers have a way to program > these things easily. I suppose the easiest way around it is to locate the buttons on the screen - easy once you know where they are - and press the router button above it, if its the same as the Mac then that button will be activated right? > On 19 Oct 2015, at 11:37 AM, Brent Harding <br...@hostany.net> wrote: > > That's one good thing about Mac that I don't know if Windows has. I’m not going to say much in reply to this given that Braille Displays are getting to the point of being off-topic for the list, but I will say that I have been using them for 10 years and they’re an incredible help to a user of a computer in so many ways, you get a better picture of the layout of the Screen for one thing and - when it comes to audio - you can do so much more, look at notes whilst you’re broadcasting, read live eMail messages and chats whilst on the air without making a sound etc. Wit the new generation of Braille Display - in this case the Freedom Scientific Focus 40 - there’s even more power again with the addition of the Perkins style Braille keyboard, I told you how I’ve programmed the keyboard to control Skype and I’m sure I’ve only touched the surface, Freedom Scientific are on a winner with this one. > On 19 Oct 2015, at 2:23 PM, Hamit Campos <hamitcam...@gmail.com> wrote: > > For Jaws, yeah as far as I remember. I don’t know for certain, the Braille Keyboard on the Focus 40 display in conjunction with a computer is completely programmable, don’t know whether Braillenote is open like that, I suspect note and probably was never designed to be given that its a note taking device. > On 17 Oct 2015, at 2:14 PM, N K Shackelfordwrote: > > Wonder if I could do the same thing with a Braille Edge?? Its great that people are writing scripts but I don’t like to use them when I can avoid doing so as they isolate the user from the way the running App actually works so therefore you’re tied to one system or one Screen Reader and thus don’t have the knowledge of how functions are used in the App itself, only my opinion of course. Whilst on a call use the tab key to move to the “Dial Pad” button and press space, from here you can use the top row of numbers on your keyboard to enter responses to automated bank systems or whatever, you can even paste a string of numbers into the Edit box which comes up when the “Dial Pad” button is pressed and have the appropriate tones entered for you by Skype automatically. ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind. ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind. -- ** Those who don't need help are prepared to help themselves

You’re right, use what you want but why on earth do people just have to make mountains out of molehills and make things difficult? Skype is a continually evolving platform and it won’t be long before GW Connect doesn’t work with Skype, I’ve not used the utility for a good while and - for all I know - it may not even be compatible with parts of Skype now, just bit bite the bullet and have a look at the Skype Interface, its very user friendly and straight forward, actually my favourite Windows Screen Reader for Skype is NVDA so that alone shows how much the software has improved accessibility wise. You can also do further tweaking to make Skype look the way you want it to look by playing with the view shortcuts. My favourite Skype platform of all is for the Mac and the cordless phone I’ve been describing is proving a very convenient tool for those times when I’m not near a computer and wish to make and receive calls. > On 17 Sep 2015, at 4:33 pm, Peter Scanlon <sca...@tpg.com.au> wrote: > > I’m just saying what some of us use. > > P. > > > From: Dane Trethowan > Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2015 4:29 PM > To: PC Audio Discussion List > Subject: Re: Skype For Windows: A Discovery Made > > GW Connect was discontinued long ago, it can't even be gotten any > longer, why recommend something that doesn't exist or isn't supported > and may not even work with the later operating systems? > > > > On 9/17/2015 7:55 AM, Peter Scanlon wrote: >> Scripts make it much easier. Yep, I'll put the link to the manual below. Since I last wrote about this I've progressed further, I've now found the Contacts and History screens and can browse through those in effect. The phone is set to display "Online Contacts", I discovered that I can type a letter - in a similar way to how you do it with a number pad on a mobile device - and get to contacts in the Screen that way, I know what order my contacts appear in so that helps and I used Skype on the computer to help me sort things out there So here's the manual https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10565527/DUALphone_4088_User_Manual.pdf On 9/17/2015 12:37 PM, Tim Grady wrote: I wouldn't mind a look at it. To be perfectly honest, I’ve not tried Skype For Windows using Text chats yet but the point still remains, I assume that - when you talk of Scripts - you’re assuming that everyone is using JAWS? That just ain’t the case. I use JAWS here and I like it a lot but for those who don’t use JAWS then they don’t have JAWS scripts to work with thus those people have two distinct options, use Skype and learn about what accessibility is built-in or not use Skype at all - or spend a whole heap of extra money just to get JAWS to run Skype scripts - . > On 17 Sep 2015, at 4:48 am, brianolesen <br...@blindkom.dk> wrote: > > Hi, > Hmm well not really. > For example you can not get automatic speech in a chat session if you're > downloading a file without the scripts. > > > Brian > Brian > > -Oprindelig meddelelse- > Fra: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] På vegne af Dane > Trethowan > Sendt: 16. september 2015 20:38 > Til: PC Audio Discussion List <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> > Emne: Re: Skype For Windows: A Discovery Made > > Interesting, I thought we’d gone beyond using scripts for Skype now, it seems > to me at any rate that the latest version of Skype for Windows is very > accessible indeed, has been like that for quite some time and full credit to > Microsoft addressing many accessibility issues. > > Its great that people are writing scripts but I don’t like to use them when I > can avoid doing so as they isolate the user from the way the running App > actually works so therefore you’re tied to one system or one Screen Reader > and thus don’t have the knowledge of how functions are used in the App > itself, only my opinion of course. > > >> On 17 Sep 2015, at 4:33 am, brianolesen <br...@blindkom.dk> wrote: >> >> Hi, >> If you're using the scripts you can just press ctrl shift d to enable or >> disable the dialpad. >> >> Brian >> >> -Oprindelig meddelelse- >> Fra: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] På vegne af Dane >> Trethowan >> Sendt: 16. september 2015 19:19 >> Til: PC Audio Discussion List <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> >> Emne: Skype For Windows: A Discovery Made >> >> Hi! >> >> For those who use Skype For Windows, I discovered that the feature to >> generate tones whilst on a call now works, in previous versions of Skype For >> windows getting this feature to work was problematic at best - in most cases >> I couldn’t get the function to work at all -. >> >> Anyway Microsoft have certainly fixed the problem so here’s how to activate >> the function. >> >> Whilst on a call use the tab key to move to the “Dial Pad” button and press >> space, from here you can use the top row of numbers on your keyboard to >> enter responses to automated bank systems or whatever, you can even paste a >> string of numbers into the Edit box which comes up when the “Dial Pad” >> button is pressed and have the appropriate tones entered for you by Skype >> automatically. >> >> >> ** >> Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the >> halfwits in this world behind. >> >> >> >> >> > > ** > Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the > halfwits in this world behind. > > > > > ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind.

Interesting, I thought we’d gone beyond using scripts for Skype now, it seems to me at any rate that the latest version of Skype for Windows is very accessible indeed, has been like that for quite some time and full credit to Microsoft addressing many accessibility issues. Its great that people are writing scripts but I don’t like to use them when I can avoid doing so as they isolate the user from the way the running App actually works so therefore you’re tied to one system or one Screen Reader and thus don’t have the knowledge of how functions are used in the App itself, only my opinion of course. > On 17 Sep 2015, at 4:33 am, brianolesenwrote: > > Hi, > If you're using the scripts you can just press ctrl shift d to enable or > disable the dialpad. > > Brian > > -Oprindelig meddelelse- > Fra: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] På vegne af Dane > Trethowan > Sendt: 16. september 2015 19:19 > Til: PC Audio Discussion List > Emne: Skype For Windows: A Discovery Made > > Hi! > > For those who use Skype For Windows, I discovered that the feature to > generate tones whilst on a call now works, in previous versions of Skype For > windows getting this feature to work was problematic at best - in most cases > I couldn’t get the function to work at all -. > > Anyway Microsoft have certainly fixed the problem so here’s how to activate > the function. > > Whilst on a call use the tab key to move to the “Dial Pad” button and press > space, from here you can use the top row of numbers on your keyboard to enter > responses to automated bank systems or whatever, you can even paste a string > of numbers into the Edit box which comes up when the “Dial Pad” button is > pressed and have the appropriate tones entered for you by Skype automatically. > > > ** > Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the > halfwits in this world behind. > > > > > ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind.

Hi Robert, I'd like to share this happy news with you and the other listers that are interested. Skype decided that they are extending the use of Skype Desktop API. This means that we are going to be able to still use MP3 skype recorder after december until they find another alternative. for more information, check their blog here: http://blogs.skype.com/2013/11/06/feature-evolution-and-support-for-the-skype-desktop-api/ Hope that helps! Best wishes Hamid AITOUZNAG We never value what we have until we lose it! Be careful how you treat people on your way up because you might meet them again on your way down!!! Be aware that as good as gwConnect is it still has problems hosting conference calls of more than 6 people. What I have noticed is that after a certain number of added callers it began separating the new callers from the earlier ones so that you in a since have 2 conference calls of which you can hear everyone but the 2 groups can't hear each other. I used GW Connect for a while until the introductory announcement that comes up when you log on and the periodic sales pitches began to wear on me. I also was disturbed by the thought that I was automatically connected to the GW Micro site for examination of my computer for Window-Eyes. Hi Dane, I guess you have windows 7 on that pc. To avoid what happens to you, go in the system tray and look for the speaker icon. once there find in the group of tabs in which you have playback, recording, the one called comunication tab. You should find, pressing tab once, a group of radio buttons responsible of your volume getting lower. Choose the button meaning do nothing. I use the same operating system, but in italian, so the names could be slightly wrong, sorry for that. Hth, Gianluca. Skype: gianluca8815 On 14/09/2011 05:18, Dane trethowan wrote: Howdy Folks! Hi Tim, I do use SkypeTalking as well as the Window-Eyes scripts for Skype. I find that SkypeTalking adds a number of enhancements to Skype that aren't in the scripts. I hope this helps. RE: Skype not closing in Windows 7
Nolan, There is a work around for this if you want to do it. First close down Skype. Navigate to the skype.exe file under your program files folder and bring up the properties for it. Go under the compatibility tab and check the compatibility mode box and set the OS to Vista and click ok. Now your Skype window will close out like you are used to and won't be in the tab order any longer. I did this with no ill effects that I could notice and seems to work fine. Re: Skype not closing in Windows 7
Might I recommend a program called Skype Talking? It uses keystrokes to do its work, rather than bringing up an interface. I open and close Skype with this program, and you can make other changes in a quicker and more straightforward way. The program is free from http://code.google.com/p/skypetalking/ For the problem you describe, you'll want to set the options of Skype Talking so that when you start and close the program, it will shut down Skype. I just use control shift alt Q to quit both programs at once. I've even gone so far as to delete the desktop shortcut for Skype, and I just use the shortcut for Skype Talking. If you read the documentation, you'll get all of the control shift alt commands that the program uses. It's wonderful. Enjoy. Hi Peter, Pardon me but what I think u meant was putting skype in the system tray while u are sign in right ? and if u need to bring skype back to the foreground, u would just call it from the system tray, just like on windows xp and vista? If so, its fairly simple. just go to the skype options, under advance, tab till u hear, keep skype in the taskbar while I'm signed in. its check by default, just uncheck it, tab to safe, and you are done. hope it helps. RE: Skype. Newer isn't always better.
Had the same problem with the chat window until I downloaded the newest scripts. Try installing the newest scripts. Not sure of the version. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joe Sent: 16 April 2010 10:37 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Skype. Newer isn't always better. I just updated skype to the latest version with Jaws scripts using Jaws 11. There are two issues that I know of that didn't happen with older versions of skype. First. In text chat, Jaws used to start speaking the message as soon as it was received. This no longer happens. Now I must root my Jaws to PC and use the arrow keys to read the message. Second. The alt shift O key no longer says how many of your contacts are on line. Instead, it says unable to get the contact list. Can anyone please tell me the latest version of skype and scripts that work well with Jaws 11? Thanks. Joe. Re: Skype Question
If you had a preamp and your stueio mic you could use your line in jack. However if your mic needs phantom power you can't get it from your sound card. High Tim, The preamp that I will be using, is a studio mixer that has the phantom power supply built in to it. I will be using 2 mikes at the same time to get the stereo affect. Can this be done with Skype?
