Serprised things didn't work with the original sound card as these days the
sound card is activated. However, you might have someone check settings in
the control panel. If that fails you might want to have it serviced under
the warrenty.

 hi
I've sort of been helping Lynn solve this issue and i mentioned the
20 db boost, but it doesn't seem to be in the same place as mine is.
I've got a SB Live!Audigy 2, and the 20 db boost checkbox is there,
but only after you press the advanced buttton in playback controls
 for the microphone.

Subject: Cannot get good microphone volume

I purchased a new PC a few months ago and, despite playing with the
settings in the Windows volume control, trying two sound cards and
multiple microphones, I cannot seem to get good enough volume without
a lot of hiss. I know I tend to be quite soft-spoken, but I didn't
have this problem on the old PC. I first tried the Realtek card that
came with my PC. It was fairly acceptible for playback, but I had the
low mic volume problem. I then bought a Creative 24-bit USB External
card (I went with that card because I figured it would be easy to
install since it was USB), installed it and updated the drivers, but
again, with trying multiple different brands of microphones, the mic
level was very low unless I cranked the Windows volume control way
up, in which case I had unacceptible hiss. It is interesting to me
that, despite having Advanced Controls checked, I cannot find a mic
boost option in my SB Live, but it does have a microphone volume
control wheel on the card itself, which only worsens the hiss if I
crank it up. I am using Sound Forge 8 on a Shuttle PC with 1 GB of
RAM, Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, 3.00 gigahertz Intel
Pentium 4, and Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External with the latest
drivers as of three days ago. Aside from screaming into the
microphones, is there anything else I can do to kick up the volume,
preferably without having to break the bank? The research I've done
shows that the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External is not a good card
for recording, but I would prefer to stick with a USB sound card
because I don't know how to install an internal card. However, I will
go with an internal card and pay someone to install it if that is
necessary. I tried a Logitech USB microphone which does work quite
nicely, but I cannot get Jaws to come through my recordings, and for
some crazy reason, my PC reboots spontaneously after having it
connected for more than 15 minutes, even if I'm not using it. With
all the microphones I have tried, I could probably create my own
electronics store on Ebay. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Cannot get good microphone volume

2006-07-16 Thread Lynn Schneider
I have checked every single setting I can think, and a few other
places recommended to me by folks on this list, including the system
tray volume control, but the mic boost remains elusive. I am very
familiar with the location of the mic boost setting, as I had it on a
former PC and changed it myself. I don't think there is actually a
defect in the sound card. From the research I've done, many of these
low-cost, consumer-grade sound cards are more designed for listening
than recording, so the microphone jack is just basically put there as
an afterthought. Mic volume seems to be a recurrent problem for many
people using these cards. For example, the SB Live card I have is
more designed for home theater, so the surround sound is its claim to
fame, not its recording capability. . In the amazon.com reviews,
three people said that mic volume was a problem, and one said they
wrote to Creative and was told that the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
External is really not designed for recording. I just thought all
Creative cards were good, but I know now that I should have gotten an
Audigy instead of the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External. I suppose
I'll try the battery-operated mic, and if that doesn't work, I'll
have to get an Audigy.

Hi Rick. When I go into the volume control, there is an advanced

like I had on the old PC. I'm guessing that this sound card just

believe it or not, there are two microphone settings.

the one you want is in
your volume on the system tray under open volume control.

there's settings to show what will show up and there's a microphone control
in there and the advanced button next to that will let you activate the 20
db boost.

connected for more than 15 minutes, even if I'm not using it. With
all the microphones I have tried, I could probably create my own
electronics store on Ebay. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

PC-Audio List Help

Re: Cannot get good microphone volume

2006-07-15 Thread Richard Claypool
there are two advanced buttons.

The one is for moniterng sound and that's in the volume properties. the
other is in the playback or, if you goto the volume icon in yoru system it's
under open volume controls, the first item in your context menu. that's
where the twenty db boos resides. the same place as yours man.

Ok, so my big question is, and I'm sure Lynn's asking the same thing,
where on earth is the 20 DB boost if you're using the card she's
using? She can't locate it, and i did some research trying to tell
where to look and I'm coming up with nothing.
So we're both lost on this one.

 Hi,
This is probally something you did, but did you remember to turn on the
 20db
gain boost? On my old machine, there was no such option, so I didn't
 know
about it and it took me a little poaking around. You've probally done
 that,
but just thought I'd mention it.

Subject: Cannot get good microphone volume

I purchased a new PC a few months ago and, despite playing with the
settings in the Windows volume control, trying two sound cards and
multiple microphones, I cannot seem to get good enough volume
   without
a lot of hiss. I know I tend to be quite soft-spoken, but I didn't
have this problem on the old PC. I first tried the Realtek card that
came with my PC. It was fairly acceptible for playback, but I had
   the
low mic volume problem.
24-bit External is not a good
   card
for recording, but I would prefer to stick with a USB sound card
because I don't know how to install an internal card. However, I
   will
go with an internal card and pay someone to install it if that is

2006-07-15 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I have this problem on my laptop. I solved it by buying a microphone that
you put batteries in. It does quite well with volume level. I do get CPU
noise, but I think that's due to the sound card I'm using. I got it from
Radio Shack. It cost me somewhere around $25. Battery life is decent in
it. It uses 2 AAA batteries. It's a boom mike, and the batteries go in the
bottom of the base that's on the microphone.
