What's the deal with strap lugs for the LX? Rarer than a Ruth's
Chris
porterhouse, and just about as expensive. I thought I was out of
my mind
for bidding $36 for a set on ebay...and now I've been outbid.

It's really quiet simple. These buggers are only used on LX. They
get lost. Pentax has had them missing from the catalog for years.
In addition, camera stores that deal in used gear have a habit of
separating straps from the cameras and throwing them in a junk bin.
When the uninitiated buy the camera, they don't think about the
strap and forget to ask for them.

Cans't thou telleth me where I may findeth the little buggers for
less than
 a well-used Spotmatic?

Check http://www.camera-direct.com. This UK site lists the pair for
UKP10.00. It may be worth a try.

P.S.: but seriously, I love the little aperture readout window on the DMD,

to see it and like them. And the nice brassing on my black version ;)
Although not worth a collector, it just makes people with plastic cameras

K2DMD (0.75kg?) with bracket and big Sunpak flash (0.8kg) battery pack

20mm f/4

I have discussed this already with my boss at Komkon. There
would have to be a much more compelling reason than this to
remove an image entirely from a gallery. What I am doing to
adress these concerns is renaming files and links, plus adding

I then am adding a file with the original name to the directory
that lycos can link to which explains what a bunch of scum they
are, and inviting the viewer to visit our gallery.

Ok. Understand most of what was in the previous responses about pushing

Thanks!
One thing not addressed tho- (Hope this is not too dumb a question...)

I don't do my own developing. So can I ask a lab to push separate frames?
Say like, "Mr. lab please develop all of this roll at it's base ISO of 800,
but push frames no.'s 14 and 16 to ISO 3200 because I changed my camera's
settings for those frames"??
(Because if I ask them to push a whole roll 2 stops for only one or two
pictures starting at frame #14, I will of course ruin the previous 13
pictures, right?)
And can a lab be depended upon to get this right, and, (if they do do such
things), do they charge more for 'custom' developments like this?

Hi, Mafud. I'm heading off to work now, where I won't be able to check my

No different from people losing or throwing out negatives (which, trust

archiving digital images will be more work than archiving film, but

LX Flash Recommendations

2001-01-20 Thread Mark Cassino

When I took the LX plunge I had hoped my Sunpack AF440 flash would work
with it, since it does not seem to be a digital unit. However, it seems to
suffers from some sort of incompatibilities with my LX - sometimes working
OK and other times not.

In looking at the Pentax offering, it looks like there's the AF400 - which
is a "potato masher" style unit, the AF280T, and the AF220T that will offer
TTL with the LX. I already have a 220T and it's OK, but IMHO not really
powerful enough for anything but direct flash - when I try bounce flash it
just does not have the power to make it work. It's gn 22 and the AF 280T is
gn 28 - so it seems that there is not a lot of difference between them.
That leaves the AF400, but I'm not too keen on the potato masher style - I
know it offers advantages but when I want those advantages I use a flash
bracket.

So - are there some more powerful (gn 40 or more) third party flashes out
there that are compatible with the LX?

Re: Maximum Extension Tube Length

2001-01-20 Thread Mark Cassino

I've shot with over 300mm of extension tubes, using a 50mm
reverse mounted on a 135mm (magnification was 10x life sized on the
film.) The practical problem is preventing unsharpness due to vibration -
it's a pretty ganglely rig. Stack it so everything is vertical, douse the
lights and use a flash for exposure (TTL won't work so you'll have to
work up effective aperture and calculate flash distances). The flash acts
as a very fast shutter and counteracts the effects of vibrations. Still a
tough rig to work with.

Somewhere in the PUG archives is a photo of a snowflake I took with that
setup.

No more rolls of negs in more packing boxes than I care to remember, no more

The reason for this odd posting. I generally travel with three primes - FA

135 mm f2.8. I have this lens. I need it to take pictures of daughter dancing

along with either 1) RTF of SFXn or 2) some pentax FTZ flash or a Metz
flash with SCA-3000 type (digital) adapter
to achieve contrast control multiflash. The Sunpak would be either bounced
or handheld by an assistant or myself, while the RTF or hotshoe mounted
digital flash would fill-in the shadows by firing front.

Is that possible, and how? Or anybody with the Sunpak G4500DX (AT555) knows
if that flash is digital? I know that some of the adapters for nikon/canon
eos cameras feature digital-only functions (I assume that autofocus aid is
dig.funct.), but does sunpak makes adapter for Pentax with digital
functions? I have a very old Sunpak catalog which lists only SFXn body, not
Pentax newer bodies.

Thanks!

Especially with the matching DIAL DATA BACK D (same as on LX but with
different designation and different contacts - not intechangeable AFAIK).
Perhaps I should not abuse mine so much ;-). I will have to repaint the
brassing though ;-) (K2DMD was only in black, so it brasses a LOT at the
edges). I was told most of them were used as police cameras and such, that
true?

I've never seen the DMD but I do own three K2 bodies. They make
wonderful macro cameras, although a lighter mirror/shutter would be nice.
The large mirror does make them good for long lenses though.

They have the largest mirror of all my cameras (expect 6x6 SLRs ;-)
Exceptionally good with a 500mm lens. Even the LX is told to vignette (in
finder) with the longer telephotos, while K2 does not.

Well, enough of praising my camera ;-) It's like praising the merits of

In HP Books "How to select and use Pentax SLR Cameras", the
viewfinder of the K2DMD is stated as 95%, and the LX at 95% by
98%. I've found this book to be fairly accurate in other specs;
don't know about these. It also has the MX at 95%, ME Super at
92%.

I still think it's larger, because ther's that area on right side of the K2

unlike leds on newer cameras (but t's pain to see in the dark! I do lot of

did not take this transparent area into account.

Here is an even easier way. Take the window out of a mat, and

I have the 555, and it's not digital. The same adapter I use with a ZX5n and
a PZ1p can be used with my SFXN and my 645 -- which is actually pretty
handy, since it kept my investment in modules small. With its manual sync
chord I can also use with a K1000 and a Yashicamat. I get very good results
with it, although I do wish it had more dedicated functions for Pentax. I
could see using it for contrast control with the pop-up flashes of the PZ or
the SF, but I don't know how you'd do it with an FTZ flash unless you used
the 500's slave function.

Re: 100% finders

2001-01-20 Thread Ed Mathews

Most of the time I print with my standard 35mm negative carrier in the
23CII. But I also have a universal anti-newton glass carrier that I
sometimes use, which allows the light to pass through the clear film and put
a black border around the print, thickness dependent on the easel
adjustment. But,
1. The 4 extra glass surfaces are a real pain to keep clean.
2. The perfect straight edge shows any linear distortion on the negative
border caused by your enlarging lens. And,
3. Too much additional light during the exposure can bounce off your easel,
worksurface, walls, and back onto the paper, fogging it and lowering
contrast.
But, that black border does look awfully cool.

Thanks,
Ed

I have a small objection to putting black borders around less

Hi Friends! I have bought a new Pentax FA 35mm f2.0 Al lens. What
are good and bad points of this lens?

It is an excellent lens, compact, and for a 35mm, f2 is usually more
than enough. Manual focusing with it is great, the best of any
non-Limited FA lens I know.

The only negative I've heard about it is that the hood is not totally
opaque in the inside, and some people reported flares caused by
it. Easy to fix with black gaffer tape.

I use it a lot without the hood, so I couldn't tell how bad a problem
this is.

Another little problem is that it looks just a bit goofy on my black

Geez - would you guys please read more carefully? I said 58 mm. was A
Pentax standard, not THE Pentax standard. Another old Pentax standard is
49 mm., of which most of us also have many filters. There are other
sizes that Pentax uses regularly. If the 24-90 has, on the other hand, a
front diameter of 62 mm., it would be worth looking further to see if
Pentax really designed and makes the lens.

That said, can anyone answer my original question?

BTW, thanks very much, Doug, for the no-mail option. Thanks to that, I'm
back on the list. Now, is there any chance that some mayordomo

Off subject. How do I access Pentax digest? I have subscribed to it but do not

Good: it rocks! great lense.

Bad: terrible lense shade, 6 blade aperture

My first lense for my ZX-5n, I like it a lot, better than the 35mm T* on my

Well, you have to scan it and save it. Most scanners come with a
PhotoShop Plug-in that you install. Then, when you scan the photo it
will automatically open it in Photoshop. But Photoshop can open almost
any image type that a scanner can produce. Once you've opened it in
Photoshop, you simply resize it with the "Image Size" control to fit the
PUG standard.

that. g Negatives are good for a lot of things, including Granny
keeping her negs in a shoebox under the bed, though odds are she's lost
them years ago (not your granny, necessarily). g Film storage is good

 I have a Sunpak Auto 444D (otherwise known as a B3600DX). GN is 36
which might not be quite powerful enough for you, but you can get a zoom
head for 35mm to 135mm coverage which will bring up the GN at longer
distances. The zoom head has a built in reflector which is great for bounce
flash, and even has slots for filters. Any Sunpak DX flash will be LX-
compatible using the PT-2D shoe adaptor.

Looking at my Sunpak catalogue you could also try the Auto 555
(G4500DX) which has a GN of 45 metres. That's a "potato masher" though.
The 120J TTL is pretty powerful but it's a different type of flash again and
might not be as versatile to you as a "normal" flash. There doesn't appear to
be much available in Sunpak shoe-mount flashes with the kind of GN you're
looking for. Unfortunately that's the only brochure I have immediately
available :)
