Re: The Lycos thang (again)
I have discussed this already with my boss at Komkon. There would have to be a much more compelling reason than this to remove an image entirely from a gallery. What I am doing to adress these concerns is renaming files and links, plus adding meta tags to prevent the robots from reharvesting the images. I then am adding a file with the original name to the directory that lycos can link to which explains what a bunch of scum they are, and inviting the viewer to visit our gallery. More about Pushing film...
Ok. Understand most of what was in the previous responses about pushing film. Thanks! One thing not addressed tho- (Hope this is not too dumb a question...) I don't do my own developing. So can I ask a lab to push separate frames? Say like, "Mr. lab please develop all of this roll at it's base ISO of 800, but push frames no.'s 14 and 16 to ISO 3200 because I changed my camera's settings for those frames"?? (Because if I ask them to push a whole roll 2 stops for only one or two pictures starting at frame #14, I will of course ruin the previous 13 pictures, right?) And can a lab be depended upon to get this right, and, (if they do do such things), do they charge more for 'custom' developments like this? Hi, Mafud. I'm heading off to work now, where I won't be able to check my mail, but read what I wrote about the negatives. Most people might not keep their digital files, but most won't keep their negatives beyond a few years, either. Those who care about preserving their work will transfer their images; those who don't see it as being worth the trouble won't. No different from people losing or throwing out negatives (which, trust me, they do all the time). And I expect it to be a *lot* easier in the future to transfer data, as someone else already pointed out. LX Flash Recommendations
When I took the LX plunge I had hoped my Sunpack AF440 flash would work with it, since it does not seem to be a digital unit. However, it seems to suffers from some sort of incompatibilities with my LX - sometimes working OK and other times not. In looking at the Pentax offering, it looks like there's the AF400 - which is a "potato masher" style unit, the AF280T, and the AF220T that will offer TTL with the LX. I already have a 220T and it's OK, but IMHO not really powerful enough for anything but direct flash - when I try bounce flash it just does not have the power to make it work. It's gn 22 and the AF 280T is gn 28 - so it seems that there is not a lot of difference between them. That leaves the AF400, but I'm not too keen on the potato masher style - I know it offers advantages but when I want those advantages I use a flash bracket. So - are there some more powerful (gn 40 or more) third party flashes out there that are compatible with the LX? - MCC - - - - - - - - - - Mark Cassino Kalamazoo, MI [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - Photos: http://www.markcassino.com - - - - - - - - - - - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Maximum Extension Tube Length
I've shot with over 300mm of extension tubes, using a 50mm reverse mounted on a 135mm (magnification was 10x life sized on the film.) The practical problem is preventing unsharpness due to vibration - it's a pretty ganglely rig. Stack it so everything is vertical, douse the lights and use a flash for exposure (TTL won't work so you'll have to work up effective aperture and calculate flash distances). The flash acts as a very fast shutter and counteracts the effects of vibrations. Still a tough rig to work with. Somewhere in the PUG archives is a photo of a snowflake I took with that setup. - MCC At 10:39 PM 1/10/01 -0800, you wrote: Is there any theoretical or practical limit to the length of extension tubes? Negative storage is not near the hassle it was for me when I shot hundreds of rolls of 35mm. Archiving 35mm was also a pain until I began the triage system I now use on my 67 negs. Besides, how likely is it that my (or anyones) negatives, no matter how good they are, are worth a hoot to someone else? Since I'm no longer starry-eyed, thinking the world would discover my talents soon enough, and then my work would spread throughout imagedom and scads of money would pour down on me...NOT; only the good family stuph and my commercial negs get any care at all. contrast control flash with ANALOG flash
Hi! I don't seem to grasp even from Boz's page if it's possible to use ie analog ttl flash offcamera (I have a big Sunpak G4500DX, similar to AF400T) along with either 1) RTF of SFXn or 2) some pentax FTZ flash or a Metz flash with SCA-3000 type (digital) adapter to achieve contrast control multiflash. The Sunpak would be either bounced or handheld by an assistant or myself, while the RTF or hotshoe mounted digital flash would fill-in the shadows by firing front. Is that possible, and how? Or anybody with the Sunpak G4500DX (AT555) knows if that flash is digital? I know that some of the adapters for nikon/canon eos cameras feature digital-only functions (I assume that autofocus aid is dig.funct.), but does sunpak makes adapter for Pentax with digital functions? Re: contrast control flash with ANALOG flash
I have the 555, and it's not digital. The same adapter I use with a ZX5n and a PZ1p can be used with my SFXN and my 645 -- which is actually pretty handy, since it kept my investment in modules small. With its manual sync chord I can also use with a K1000 and a Yashicamat. I get very good results with it, although I do wish it had more dedicated functions for Pentax. I could see using it for contrast control with the pop-up flashes of the PZ or the SF, but I don't know how you'd do it with an FTZ flash unless you used the 500's slave function. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2001 12:07 PM Subject: contrast control flash with ANALOG flash Hi! I have a very old Sunpak catalog which lists only SFXn body, not Pentax newer bodies. Thanks! - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 100% finders
Most of the time I print with my standard 35mm negative carrier in the 23CII. But I also have a universal anti-newton glass carrier that I sometimes use, which allows the light to pass through the clear film and put a black border around the print, thickness dependent on the easel adjustment. But, 1. The 4 extra glass surfaces are a real pain to keep clean. 2. The perfect straight edge shows any linear distortion on the negative border caused by your enlarging lens. And, 3. Too much additional light during the exposure can bounce off your easel, worksurface, walls, and back onto the paper, fogging it and lowering contrast. But, that black border does look awfully cool. Manual focusing with it is great, the best of any non-Limited FA lens I know. The only negative I've heard about it is that the hood is not totally opaque in the inside, and some people reported flares caused by it. Easy to fix with black gaffer tape. I use it a lot without the hood, so I couldn't tell how bad a problem this is. Another little problem is that it looks just a bit goofy on my black MX... j -- - Juan J. Focusing Screen
What is the difference between the FS-50 and FS-60 screens? I noticed on Bojidar Dimitrov's site that the FS-60 is listed for the PZ-1p and the "50" for the PZ-1. Is this correct, and would I also assume that by using the FS-60 in a Z-1 that I would in fact have to compensate the exposure by -1 EV? Re: trying to get an image into photoshop 5.5 ot btw
Well, you have to scan it and save it. Most scanners come with a PhotoShop Plug-in that you install. Then, when you scan the photo it will automatically open it in Photoshop. But Photoshop can open almost any image type that a scanner can produce. Once you've opened it in Photoshop, you simply resize it with the "Image Size" control to fit the PUG standard. okay the image was scanned at my mom's house and emailed to my computer. Nothing is going to get "cheaper," we'll just more for our money, as in a 20 GIG HDD today for $100 vis-a-vis a 10 GIG HDD for $150 a year ago. The amount of time it takes for the transfer, after we've sunk a few hundred bucks in the new archiving system, will also be costly. If DVD becomes VDVD or ODVD (Video or Optically recorded DVD), that new system will cost more than some will pay. By the time VDVD or ODVD becomes cheap enough for all to afford it, what do you want to wager that another that new system, this time maybe LDVD (Laser DVD) won't be sprung on the consumer? Re: 50mm f1.7 plus 2x converter - odd combination for travel

Re: Riches incalculable
Maybe we should all go through this day realizing that we often tend to think about what we don't have, and looking instead at what we DO have. Ever since I started my little cognitive experiment, I have felt privileged just to walk through the grocery store realizing that I can buy anything I feel like buying. It's a nice feeling. 2.4 billion people on this planet live on less than $1 a day. Just the ability to walk into a well-stocked grocery store with enough money in your pocket to buy whatever you want places you squarely amongst a very small fraction of the world's wealthiest people. Re: Wahoo!
Try this: Go to a used computer or electronics shop and get a thing known as an "EPROM". It has a little window in it whereby the chip's circuit is visible. Get close to this and vary the angle of your light source. Add a polarizer for more variety. Fun. In a geeky sort of way. Sounds cool. Said Mafud, kowtowing deeply, meanwhile offering profuse apologies to Chris for his unauthorized editing of Chris' statement. *L* Ok, everyone seems to think that I'm knocking conventional film as a storage medium for the masses, when I'm not. Film is nice. I like film. Film is fun and good and sweetness and light and stuff like that. g Negatives are good for a lot of things, including Granny keeping her negs in a shoebox under the bed, though odds are she's lost them years ago (not your granny, necessarily). g Film storage is good for some things, digital storage for others. Digital equipment can be expensive, but once you have the equipment you can shoot as much as you want and not have to pay for film and developing, which can add up very quickly. There's advantages to each system. And after LDVD? Another and another and another... And who knows... your CD's might still be readable under these systems. Please realize that I'm not saying that digital archiving is the most cost-efficient, low-maintenance system that there is. I believe that someday it probably will be, but definitely not yet. I'm only saying that, for those people who can afford it and have the time to transfer the images a few times in their life, digital storage has several advantages over film. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Granny reaches under her bed, pulls out one of her many shoeboxes... ...only to find that a mouse has nibbled away at most of the few negatives of hers that had survived the fire, the move, and general neglect (with absolutely no offense meant to Mafud's, or anyone else's, granny) g. chris P.S. Can we *please* label all of these as "OT"? I don't want to piss more people off than I have to. :) - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: LX Flash Recommendations
Mark Cassino writes: So - are there some more powerful (gn 40 or more) third party flashes out there that are compatible with the LX? I have a Sunpak Auto 444D (otherwise known as a B3600DX). GN is 36 which might not be quite powerful enough for you, but you can get a zoom head for 35mm to 135mm coverage which will bring up the GN at longer distances. The zoom head has a built in reflector which is great for bounce flash, and even has slots for filters. Any Sunpak DX flash will be LX- compatible using the PT-2D shoe adaptor. Looking at my Sunpak catalogue you could also try the Auto 555 (G4500DX) which has a GN of 45 metres. That's a "potato masher" though. The 120J TTL is pretty powerful but it's a different type of flash again and might not be as versatile to you as a "normal" flash. There doesn't appear to be much available in Sunpak shoe-mount flashes with the kind of GN you're looking for. Unfortunately that's the only brochure I have immediately available :) Cheers, - Dave David A.
