For me, the buffer size is the spec I'm most interested in.

Tokina versions of the new f/2.8 DA zooms are not compatible with the 1x

In a suspension bridge, the suspension wires move a little bit all the time.
Even though it was probably shot with a fairly quick shutter speed (I used AV

This was talked about , on the Nikon D1 BB, when people started
aquiring their 10mp Nikons, D2X and D200, was that camera shake became
more noticable with the jump from 4-10 mp.

Its not an issue they say if the old shutter rule is applied( keep
shutter at least to lens focal lenght) and or VR lenses used.

I have noticed nothing out of the ordinary going from 4-10mp but i
tend to use the VR on the 70-200 a lot, and high shutter, so maybe
thats why.

Just something to keep in mind with the K10D unless you have
investigated this already.
Is the K10D equiped with the IS sensor to, or just the K100D and K110D.

If its going to be the same size as the pro Nikon bodies, D2X etc,
you;ll need more than a leash to old on to it.

I use a wheel barrel and pry bar to help with neck fatique.

The widely varying performance is because some testers don't realize

It reads like a very intelligent test. The Nikon
D200 and the Sony Alpha

apparently have the same sensor.

SR may give us 2, 2.5, or 3 stops extra speed. But
we would lose at
least one of those stops to noise. (If you shot
satisfactorily at ISO
1600 before, with the K10D you may need to limit
yourself to ISO 800.) I
often shoot in low light, and am concerned about
this noise issue.

I don't want to have to buy the K100D to get shake

have the features I need.

What are others on the list planning to do re: the

The tilting horizon is due to the fact that after half an hour trying to get

as I use a bubble level. There are probably several more images where the
horizon appears tilted due to the same reason.

But the color is very real. At this time of the year (November), the sun
barely rise above the horizon and we get blood red sunset the whole
day. This was shot on one of the last days the sun was up at all (it stays
below the horizon for over a month during midvinter and we only get twilight
in the middle of the day). The landscape is lit by a blood red sun to the

The K10D (or whatever the heck Pentax will be calling it), is reputed to

Its not an issue they say if the old shutter rule is applied( keep
shutter at least to lens focal lenght) and or VR lenses used.

I have noticed nothing out of the ordinary going from 4-10mp but i
tend to use the VR on the 70-200 a lot, and high shutter, so maybe
thats why.

Just something to keep in mind with the K10D unless you have
investigated this already.
Is the K10D equiped with the IS sensor to, or just the K100D and K110D.

According to tests, all the Pentax bodies have poor noise performance,
but the comparison is against bodies like the 200D and D50 which are
essentially noise-free below 1600 and extremely clean at 1600+, not film
which is grainier than any reasonably current 1.5x sensor camera at a
given ISO. In the real world, they're good but not stellar. I don't
expect the 10MP body to be noticably worse for noise than the 6MP
bodies, but I wouldn't expect much better either.

  - http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4760552 I like the
composition and the colours, but I am not sure about the horizon.

The tilting horizon is due to the fact that after half an hour trying to get
the film straight in the film holder, I gave up! It is straight on the film
as I use a bubble level. There are probably several more images where the
horizon appears tilted due to the same reason.

You can fix that tilting pretty easily in Photoshop... since
the photo itself is
not tilted it won't be distorted. I do this sort of thing
by making the canvas larger
than the scanned image and then rotating 1 degree or 2 at a
time until the image is
straight. On the thunbmnails I didnt notice any distortion
but then I have an
astigmatism :)

Some very excellent images! The only problem with a gallery is how

Re: OT Monument Valley Utah / Arizona need advice

2006-08-03 Thread Paul Stenquist
Actually, I found it amusing. It's always fun to be the center of
attention:-)
The most fun I had with spectators while shooting a commercial was in
San Francisco at city hall. We converted city hall into an opera
house and shot overnight. (City Hall looks a lot more like an opera
house than the nearby opera house.) Some of the commercial took place
on the front steps. Hundreds of people in formal dress descended the
stairs as the performance ended and got into their limos, which, of
course, included numerous Lincoln Town Cars. Apparently some
activists heard about the shoot and turned out in full force. Some of
us wore headphones so we could hear the director on the large set, so
it looked like we were recording sound. We weren't. But when the
director saw the hundreds of protesters lined up across the street,
he didn't want to disappoint them. So before he gave his Roll film
command, he did an extra loud Roll Sound. That initiated a chant
from the protesters, who screamed at the top of their voices: Less
money for cars! More money for AIDS! Good times were had by all.

A few questions on a Zeiss Ikon, an old film and a studio lighting peace

2006-08-03 Thread Lasse Karlsson
Hi all,

I would appreciate some help on a few things.
At the following adress there are a few pictures. They are self explanatory.
I got a few questions regarding what's in them.

http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=627921

1) Regarding the Zeiss Ikon Nettar front piece: You can see this red
little thingy set at F.
Now what does this red thing do there? What does F and M mean?

2) You'll see two pictures of one very old (exposed) film canister. a) Can
anybody estimate some dates for it's production? b) Any suggestions on what
process might get any pictures out of it?

3) You'll see another thingy, which is a (infrared?) sender which will
trigger some Godard studio lights that I will start learning how to use. It
obviously needs a battery. Does anybody know of what voltage this battery
would be? (Or is this evident? There are batteries of different voltages
that will physically fit, right?)

Many thanks in advance for any answers or good clues.

Lasse

Re: A few questions on a Zeiss Ikon, an old film and a studio lighting peace

It's a flash selector. F for Focal plane, meaning flash bulbs, and M
for, er, Modern [8-)))], meaning electronic flash.

 2) You'll see two pictures of one very old (exposed) film canister. a) Can
anybody estimate some dates for it's production? b) Any suggestions on what
process might get any pictures out of it?

Certainly 1970s or older. The number down the right hand side of the
label might give you a clue. Why not ask Agfa? Best option would be a
clip test in BW chemistry.

Probably not - looks like a standard 9volt (PP9 or whatever the modern
equivalent is) connector.

Many thanks in advance for any answers or good clues.

It's Isopan F. There's a thread at photodotnet about processing this
film: http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00CUF8

Re: PESO - The Other Bridge

Marnie,
I don't mind the crop, but I think the wires is a matter of resolution.
Do you have a 2000x3000 pix. Can you see individual wires there?
Do they get fuzzy as you resize this picture?
I have to doubt that they are moving.

A simple, slightly odd shot, but I sort of like it.

I'm curious... why are the vertical wires blurred when everything
 else is sharp?

 They were moving.

In a suspension bridge, the suspension wires move a little bit all the time.
Even though it was probably shot with a fairly quick shutter speed (I used AV
so I cannot say off hand what it was), it was probably not fast enough to
 capture no movement at all.

It's for using F or M sync flashbulbs. (M is the same as X IIRC).

No Idea about the film.

Looks like a connection for a standard 9 volt battery.

Re: PESO - Pond - round 2

2006-08-03 Thread Bob Sullivan
Bruce,
Like everybody says, #2 is better.
I like the way you were able to improve based on the suggestions on
the first pix.
Foreground grasses focused.
Less of the harsh sky.
Less confusion in the middle... clearer central tree.
More symeric composition, side side.
Very nice, now if I could only learn to improve like this...

Yes. The lighting is much better, softer, not so harsh. Yup, I like it better.
