IIRC, the PESO term emerged around May 2004. Just before Adelheid and I met up at Newark Airport for our Eastern USA Grand Tour. Anyway, someone said they didn't want to do PAWs (one a week) so they would do PESOs (every so often). And most took it up. Re: Moving Up to MF: 67 or 645? Or something else?
You can get high speed flash synch with either of the Pentax 67 leaf shutter lenses (165/4LS and 90/2.8LS). The camera works well handheld. I've shot at 1/30th of a second with mine, no problem. You would want a solid tripod for serious work. It is a big camera. On the other hand, a 645 might be a better investment if Pentax really does introduce a digital 645. Having waited half a year for a new Metz flash unit having P-TTL, the announced dedicated Mecablitz 58 AF-1 with USB is not offered anywhere around here. I'm waiting for one of these too. I'll likely get a 58AF-1 P/S when they actually show up. Does anyone else have one of these yet? The Metz SCA system is no longer useful for P-TTL. My current Metz TTL unit, which I have to use in A-mode on the K10D, gives many miss hits and is not very useful for fill-in flash. The Metz SCA 3702M2 is P-TTL compatible. If you can find one yet. Note though, you do need certain flashes for it to work. Firstly, it needs to be SCA 3002 system, and possibly only certain models in that range. I have a 54MZ-4, which I understand is supported, as well as 50MZ-5 and 40MZ-1 which are both not (as they are SCA 3000). If in doubt, check with Metz. Sigma doesn't show the K10D P-TTL on their lists. I wouldn't personally look at a Sigma flash; too many issues with compatibility. Though as I understand it they do worth with the K10D now. So that leaves only the Pentax AF 540FGZ or the 360FGZ to choice from? The big killer (for me personally) with the Pentax units is the lack of 'A' mode on K10D (or other PTTL(/TLL?) cameras). Re: Moving Up to MF: 67 or 645? Or something else?
- Original Message - From: David Bliss Subject: Moving Up to MF: 67 or 645? Or something else? So I'm growing increasingly frustrated with 35mm and APS-C digital. Solutoin: medium format. But what? Hassy and Rollei lenses are about the best you can get, many of them surpass the best 35mm format lenses for resolution. The Pentax 645 lenses are very good indeed, 6x7 lenses are not showing the high resolution numbers, but the bigger neg makes up for a lot of that. I have 11x14 prints from 6x7 negs hanging beside prints from 4x5 negs (shot with good Nikkor lenses), and can't really tell any difference. I think at 16x20 or larger you might see the 4x5 advantage. The 6x7 is noisy, but not shaky. You can balance an American nickel on the focusing screen of a leveled 6x7 and trip the shutter, no mirror lock up used, without knocking the coin over. It's that smooth. I think Scott Loveless has a video on his website proving it. I never really missed a high sync speed, even using the 6x7 as a wedding camera. There are always workarounds that can be used. A friend of mine shoots with Hasselblad. I did some prints for him when I was running my custom darkroom and was very impressed with the sharpness of the negatives. The lenses are pretty incredible. The 6x7 waist level finder is about on par with every other waist level finder I have seen, better than some, not as good as some, about as good as most, but certainly usable, and the prism finders are very good indeed. You can also get a chimney finder for the 6x7 that works very well. Consider what you will be doing with the camera. If you are shooting in the studio, you won't miss the high sync speed (on the 6x7), but if you are going to insist on trying outdoor fill flash, you will either curse the thing from time to time, or will seek out the LS lenses to allow high sync speeds, and then curse the slow operation. The 645 is only a stop faster for shutter sync, IIRC, while the Hassy will sync up to 1/500 with all lenses. If you are primarily a landscape photographer, consider giving medium format a pass altogether, and go straight to large format. I find getting sufficient depth of field to be easy with 4x5, sometimes impossible with 6x7, and while I haven't used a 645 for many years, I don't think that it would be all that much better in this regard, the lenses aren't that much shorter for any given AOV. You will find that the 645 wants to be on a tripod sooner than a 6x7, though both are more handholdable than 35mm or digital. If you are doing your own printing, you might not like how 645 negs run through an enlarger (I don't). If you are buying a camera based on looks over performance, then consider a wood field camera, they look gorgeous, and actually perform fairly well, whough not as well as a monorail (which are not gorgeous). William Robb Hasselblad makes the sexiest gear I've ever seen. But I can't afford it even used. I like the larger negative area of the Pentax 67 -- after all, isn't neg area the name of the game? But I HATE the look of the camera. It sounds like it requires a tripod bigger than God and MLU for every shot. Flash sync sucks at only 1/30. No hotshoe for my level. Pluses: waist-level finder (apparently not a great one). 645: less neg. fixed prism -- no WL finder looks more like a hassy :) data imprinting (a must) less need for mlu/tripods/etc focus confirm on manual lenses uses 67 lenses Maybe a 645D in the future -- yeah right. So: Which should I get? Is the cost in image size worth all the other benefits of the 645? Or should i skip MF and go straight to a 4x5 view camera? Or should I go to a 6x6 view camera with the idea of robbing a bank for a digital back? But only P67/P645 will play with my existing bodies... Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or tips appreciated. Re: POG - Minority review
In a message dated 8/7/2007 2:25:21 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Effectively it actually isn't democracy at all, because only a minority is allowed to vote. The minority that happens to be the first 10 (or so) to review one particular photo. Those who frequently log on and cast votes will have much more influence than the occasional submitter. All of this will radically change WHICH images are selected. I can't see how it is supposed to be a good and purposeful sifting, but maybe I'm overly skeptic. Anyone care to speak up for the other side? Best, Jostein === No. I don't like it either. I don't have that many Pentax photos, so I didn't plan on submitting. Now that I am taking more with Pentax, I also don't plan on submitting, though the idea crossed my mind. 1. I don't consider myself good enough. 2. I think peers would say I am not good enough. That makes me unhappy. 3. But mostly I don't feel like giving away my images, and I have no need to do that to bolster up Pentax. (I don't want to get into a copyright discussion here, I am aware I would retain copyright. But I want to pick and choose where I display my own photos, and right now I just do it on my own site and I am happy with that. Actually I have stopped updating my gallery, because I now want to stick a copyright notices on my pics and I need to figure out how to do it.) Also I am a two system person, and I like my Canon stuff just as much as my Pentax stuff, or more, and I am not big brands names anyway -- in any venue, that is why I don't feel I need to bolster up Pentax. Many really, when this gallery started, contributed just to do that. So since #3 is my primary motivation, I am not totally sure how much the peer review has turned me off. I know the peer review has turned me off, but not sure how much. Sharing PESOs on list is different, nothing stops me showing them on list. People like them or they don't. shrug But I can still show them, no judges or peers are around saying I can't. I guess I have to add in all honestly, I have never liked contests or anything that remotely approaches a contest in a creative venue. This applies to things that are not photography-related at all. I am somewhat famous for having this attitude (or I was once, no longer, because it's been years since I voiced it) in completely different Net venue. I think competitiveness can stifle creativity. So, I had three prints entered in the photography competition at the Nevada County Fair. One of my landscapes got a second place in the Professional category and another got Best in Show for Pro Color Photos. This is the first time I've ever displayed my work outside of circles of friends, the pdml, and my website. Overall I would say it was a fun experience. There was some good work being exhibited (and some so not so good stuff, too). I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get my printer dialed for b/w in time for this competition. RE: FID (Film is Dead)
On the other side of the coin ... I know all the *Pros* have gone digital - but so have all of the *IDIOTS*. Had a woman at my mini-lab yesterday wanting to know if I had gotten one of the kiosks fixed. To my knowledge it wasn't broken, but who knows with the help I have; so I asked her what problem she had, and she told me the kiosk was printing all of her pictures yellow. That kiosk doesn't print anything, it's just an order station - she'd downloaded images from her memory card to be printed on the Noritsu QSS-3300. She showed me the pictures. There was one of four women playing miniature golf at the beach. One of the women in the group had that sunless tan that comes out of a bottle bleached blond hair. The customer complained the printer had turned the woman's hair yellow, because the woman really has red hair; and her skin was an un-natural orange color. I pointed out that all of the others in the photo didn't look yellow, and that the sky was a natural blue, the golf lanes were green, the reds were red, and the whites were white - that if the color was shifted it would be shifted for everything in the photo. And I pointed out that all of the photos would have the same color shift, that the printer couldn't just shift color for one person in one photo and not color shift anything else. She told me I didn't know what I was talking about. She then showed me some photos of a family get-together taken in somebody's living room. It's pretty obvious she had the white balance set for daylight and was taking pictures indoors under incandescent light. I tried to explain she needed to set the camera's white balance for the light. She told me I didn't know what I was talking about. I tried to show her that in her other outdoor photographs there was no color shift and explained that if the printer was printing yellow, ALL of the pictures; all of the colors would be shifted toward yellow. She told me I didn't know what I was talking about. She insisted on resubmitting the entire order, complaining she was on her lunch break and didn't have time to do it and I'd better get it right this time. I said yes ma'am and let it ride. We don't do anything to digital images submitted through the order kiosk. WYSIWYG. I checked 'em as they printed out though. The redhead is still blond, and her tan still came out of a bottle. I've been running the lab for about 6 months now, and I've only had one complete idiot come in with film. I get at least one a day with digital. Re: Moving Up to MF: 67 or 645? Or something else?
The difference between enlargability/quality between 645 and 6x7 formats is far less than the difference between either and 35mm, or either and 4x5. The Pentax 6x7 is a very bulky kit to carry around and, for me, requires a very sturdy tripod. The Pentax 645 is much more suitable for hand-held work and, to me, much easier to use a modest light/ medium-weight tripod. It's doubly easy to use with a light/medium weight tripod because Pentax thoughtfully fitted both bottom and side mounting points on the body, which means that the camera can be used over the center of the tripod legs without the strength needed to flip it on its side for both portrait and landscape compositions. The design of this camera is outstanding. If you want long or wide lens selections, there's more available at lower prices for the 645 kit right now than for the 6x7. I had Hasselblad SLR and SWC, Rolleiflex TLR and SLR, Mamiya 645, Fuji RF and AF, and Zeiss Ikon Ikonta medium format cameras in the past. A year ago I got interested to use some medium format equipment again and I was loaned a P645, 4 lens kit. I found the P645 a wonderful camera in use and the lenses I've used on it are right up to snuff with the others, if not better. I particularly love the A35/3.5 and A45/2.8 lenses. (BTW: you know who you are, please get in touch as I would like to return your camera ... I've lost your shipping information. thanks) One example photo: http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/photo/PAW6/large/39-half.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/photo/PAW7/large/19b-half.jpg (Both with the A35/3.5.) A couple of months ago someone locally heard that I enjoyed using the P645 and offered me a 2 lens kit (A45 and A75) with two film magazines, remote release cord, case, hoods ... ie, a complete kit ... for $400. I turned it down: as much as I like using it, I simply will not use it very much at all. He then dropped the price for the kit to $200. At that price, I couldn't resist, so I now have a two lens P645 kit for when/if I feel like working with it. The only downside, and I hear ya on this, is the lack of a waist level finder. I've been considering adding a Zigview LCD finder attachment for that purpose ... or a right angle finder. The added bonus of the P645 is that if you buy a couple of these nice lenses and the P645D comes out, you will have immediate access to using them on a 22-39Mpixel digital body... Or should I go to a 6x6 view camera with the idea of robbing a bank for a digital back? But only P67/P645 will play with my existing bodies... Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or tips appreciated. They were already making them in the Nikon mount. ZN and now ZK ... The ZA lens line for Sony Alpha is not the same as the ZF/ZS/ZK line. Re: FID (Film is Dead)
I have this theory. Back in the old days (what, 3-4 years ago?) when you got serious about photography you loaded up your camera with film. You went out and found something to photograph, you set up your camera, then you sat around relaxing until the light was where you wanted it. Back in the darkroom you stood looking at nothing, all there was were your calm thoughts, the soft buzz of the timer, every minute or so you inverted your developing tank, then went back to contemplating nothing. As a result photographers tended to be calm contemplative folks with an intact sense of humor. Now there is digital. You go out with your digital camera snapping, snapping, snapping. Running here, running there, snapping, snapping, snapping. Oh God my 4gb card is not big enough, My 500gb hard drive is full, my mouse is too slow As a result you are all hyped up, tense, angry, and any sense of humor you ever had is shattered into sharp threads. But it is exciting. So film photography is like pot, whereas digital photography is like crack. Remember, like all generalities, it does not apply to individuals, only to groups. Anyway that is my theory, and it is certainly worth every penny you paid for it. graywolf http://www.graywolfphoto.com http://webpages.charter.net/graywolf Idiot Proof == Expert Proof --- John Sessoms wrote: On the other side of the coin ... I had mine updated to work with the K10D, but the original update didn't enable off-camera wireless. Apparently they can now update for that as well but I haven't bothered because I don't use that feature. How old is your unit? I got it the moment they made one available for Pentax. (The AF540 FGZ wasn't available at the time and the 360 wasn't powerful enough for my needs.) I understand there is an update available from Sigma but haven't sent mine in yet. When I sent mine in they wouldn't tell me how much it would cost beforehand but they did do it free. I suspect they've been bitten by people sending in failed/damaged units for updates trying to get free repairs. (I worked in the electronics repair business for years. I could tell you stories...) Is wireless usage the only feature you're aware of that's missing when used on the K10D? The first units wouldn't even expose correctly on the K10D and the first update fixed that. There was a second update after Pentax introduced the AF540 FGZ, to enable wireless off-camera P-TTL. Current units should include both capabilities and updates should take care of both issues but there may be a few units on dealers' shelves that lack the second upgrade, though if you buy from a high-volume dealer like BH I don't think that would be an issue. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Digital projectors
OK, folks I am about to assist a friend in making the leap to a digital projector for powerpoint business presentations. I have no doubt I can figure out how to hook one up and make it work using the IB. But he also needs advice on what to buy, and I don't have a clue. He doesn't have a lot of money, so we're talking below $ 1,000 in price, way below if possible. A friend recommended the Epson 76C, and it looks like those can be had for just under $ 600. Re: Digital projectors
Bob, Per my presentation training last January, a digital projector should be chosen based on its lumens rating, which is dependent upon the size of the audience you are planning to use it for. up to 50 - 1000-1500 lumens 100-150 - 2500 lumens or more 250 or more - 3500-5000 lumens or more, multiple screen projection system Beyond that, specifics of the unit that you should be cognizant of are - what are the video interface requirements of your laptop/computer - what is the reputation of the particular unit with respect to your computer hardware make/OS - where is the nearest service/support depot for the unit you have in mind etc. Beyond that ... well, there my expertise is at an end. I usually borrow units when I need one. Good ones are just too expensive to buy... Did anyone of you ever have it mounted on your camera? I bought mine new several years ago have used it with both film digital bodies. What kind of images did you produce? Mainly wildlife, but I've also taken scenic's with it. It is a fabulous lens! Its also very heavy requires a sturdy tripod (I use a Gitzo 1548 CF). I use mine with a gimbal head (Kirk - King Cobra), which greatly aids in its use negates the weight effect for composition. Can't imagine using a lens this big heavy without a gimbal head. To use it in the field I utilize a backpack case (made by Kinesis) to haul it around. I have a number of images taken with the 600, posted on the Pentax Gallery - you can access the site query that lens to see some of the results. Re: FID (Film is Dead)
- Original Message - From: John Sessoms Subject: RE: FID (Film is Dead) On the other side of the coin ... I know all the *Pros* have gone digital - but so have all of the *IDIOTS*. They were idiots shooting film a few years ago, now they have more complications in their life, and more possiblities available to them to show their idiocy. Photography used to be relatively easy for the thinking impaired. The camera loaded itself with film, and all they had to do was point the thing in the general direction of the subject and push the button. The vagaries of the viewfinder would take care of ensuring the subject was in the frame, and the inherently forgiving nature of print film would ensure that they got a printable image. All that changed with digital. Customers didn't have to run a print order station, they didn't have to set white balance, or file size/quality, hue/sturation/contrast or do any of the other stuff that they now are forced to do if they want prints. They used to work with a very forgiving media, now they are working with a media that forgives very little, and they are doing the bulk of your job for you as well. They aren't necessarily idiots, they are ordinary people who have been fed a pack of lies by the industry, and now expect you, as a representative of that industry, to come through for them. Digital is supposed to be better, everyone says it is so. Digital TV, digital audio, digital whatever, it's all sold on a bill of lading that says it is better. You can't expect a person to know jack shit about your kiosk, or what part of the food chain it inhabits. The kiosk can go out of whack and start sending corrupt files to the printer, BTW. I've seen it happen with both a CT-2 print station and a Kodak print station sending work to a Noritsu 3101. You also can't expect the customer to know that her friend is the wrong colour because of a failure in the image sensor of her camera. She knows what her friend looks like, and she wants her friend to look that way in her pictures. In this case, it sounds like she has a closed mind, but if the sneering attitude you displayed in your post is representative of the way you dealt with the situation, it isn't likely she would be listening to what you had to say anyways. Your best be with this type of customer is, after education fails, to ask them to try a different lab with that particular file and see if they can do better. Just be prepared to have them come back and rub your nose in it if the other lab does manage to pull a better print. One of the advantages I had with customer service was my vague resemblance to Dr. Phil giving me instant credibility, and my ability to talk to them without talking down to them ensured that their tendency was to listen to what I had to say. I still got to deal with the idiots, but at least they walked away from my counter as happy, smiling idiots. William Robb Had a woman at my mini-lab yesterday wanting to know if I had gotten one of the kiosks fixed.
