Re: Anomalous Pentax DSLR's
I did not like the D handling and thought the K10D is much better although it is also a lot more heavy. Later I could handle a DL (father's camera) and a K100D (I offered to my wife) and I have to admit that those two are a lot better than the D. Not as good as the K10D but they are a lot more lightweight and I might steal my wife's K100D when I'll need lightweight. Re: Anomalous Pentax DSLR's
Hi, As others have said prior, most Pentax DSLR are so closely alike that it is hard to determine which one is so different. Shape/size slightly differ and is a matter of taste that the only thing that comes into my mind is the *istD's use of the CF card vs. all the other's use of the SD card which make's it anomalous. I tend to look at it that way, but since the D was the first of the series--it could either be the first try (trial error?)/prototype for Pentax or it could be the standard/measure of things to come. If it was the latter, then that makes all the others' use of the SD card as the anomaly :-D Bong On Sat, Mar 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM, Roman Melihhov [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Which Pentax DSLR's you consider as anomalous/awkward either by their intent/design or features? Here's a heads-up that the registration date for this year's Nature Photography Weekend at Grandfather Mountain is _*THIS TUESDAY*_ April 1st. I've been intrigued by the wood tripod, but don't know much about them. The wood tripod has advantages and disadvantages. They are very good at absorbing vibration, but they tend to be HEAVY when compared to an aluminium tripod or even more, to a carbon fibre tripod of similar height and load carrying ability. I haven't looked to see whats available in woodfor quite some time. I am pretty sure the Zone VI tripods are no longer available new, and I doubt that they are easily found on the used market either. Berlenbach used to be very good, they would be a good brand to look at as well. If you are looking for a high end tripod (wood is definitely high end), then also look at the carbon fibre ones as well. They are almost as good as wood for damping vibration, and weigh a lot less. I don't know about cost comparisons. Gitzo makes good ones, I am sure there are others out there, possibly better or more cost effective than Gizo. I do own a couple of metal tripods, a Montrotto 028 with an 029 (229 now), which has given me little to complain about, other than the lower column stabilizer falling apart in front of Tom Cakalic a few years ago. I never did get it reassembled, I suppose I should. I also have a Manfrotto 055 with what would now be a 115 head. It has the same problem as Jerome's tripod, with the added bonus feature of a self welding head. I did find a grease at the auto parts store that is supposed to prevent dielectric welding. I must see if it fixes that problem sometime. Hi Brian: True enough about the reflections, which is why I gave it that long title. The timing god was looking down on me when I shot this--but for my work, he's got to show up more often. I probably don't pay the gods enough deference--never been in great awe of authority figures. ;-) Thanks for looking. Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
I recently listened to an interview with a married couple that are professional photographers. Pricing was a big portion of the interview. Based on what I heard and assuming there is no cost-based reason for the $1400 sitting fee, it sounds like the prices may be based on the the photographer's desire to work with affluent customers that have the disposable income to spend $1400 on a sitting fee. It's likely a predictor that they will spend a significant additional amount on more prints and other products after the fact. On the other hand, suppose this were your primary job and you could do 30 of these sittings in a year. After expenses and taxes you might have an annual income of about $30,000. For a family of four in the US, that's barely above the official poverty line. So, they will need significant after-the-sitting sales to get up to a reasonable annual income. These are very rough estimates and could be completely wrong, but it doesn't sound that unreasonable to me. After all, this isn't the typical discount store or shopping mall portrait studio. They going on-site for a time consuming sitting. I wouldn't want to undercut pros that are charging reasonable (and I'm not saying they are) )prices. They are trying to make a living in a very competitive and difficult business. Buy undercutting them, (and I'm not saying you are) you're devaluing every one's work. If you are charging less because you are inexperienced and want to learn, make that clear to your clients. Let them know that in the future your prices will rise with your experience level. Re: Terms of Service
Adobe's recently taken a bit of criticism for the Terms of Service for the new on-line editor, Photoshop Express. At first publication the TOS basically gives Adobe the rights to the photos in your galleries. This was quickly brought to Adobe's attention and they are re-writing the terms. John Nack gives details in his blog. http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/03/a_note_about_ps.html The comments on his blog post are clear. A lot of people would like to use the new editor and free gallery space, but will not do so until the terms change. GS http://georgesphotos.net On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 8:08 AM, Doug Franklin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Howdy, folks, We've had several discussions over the years about the terms of use of various web sites and services. Well, I've been planning to put together a very short run of a small photo book from my recent trip to Bulgaria. I only plan a run of maybe 30 because they're for gifts to people over there and family here. So I've been looking at self publishing web sites like Lulu and Blurb and such. A friend of mine recently got involved with a multi-level marketing company called Creative Memories. Their focus is more on electronic scrapbooking, but they have a service that would be appropriate for what I'm doing. It's a little pricey, but I considered doing it through them to help her out. Being a bit sensitive to intellectual property issues, I read the Terms of Use (ToU). It contains the following section: Idea submission statement Any ideas, proposals, and/or other information submitted or collected on this site shall be considered non-confidential. By submitting information to this site, or directly to Creative Memories, you agree that Creative Memories shall not be under any obligation of confidentiality or non-use, express or implied, with respect to any submissions, and Creative Memories may disclose or use any submission for any purpose whatsoever, at its sole discretion, with no obligation, express or implied, to compensate or work with the person or entity that supplied the information, idea and/or proposal in any manner. Now, that's a pretty far reaching claim. Here it is again, elided to focus on what I have a problem with. ... By submitting information to this site ... you agree that ... and Creative Memories may ... use any submission for any purpose whatsoever ... with no obligation ... to compensate or work with the person or entity that supplied [it] ... I've contacted them officially asking them just exactly what they intended to say here, in case it's less than the your stuff is ours if you pay us to print it interpretation I give it. No answer. I've also contacted them unofficially through the member/dealer network. The answer from that side is that it's so they can use excerpts of your stuff in their marketing material without having to find you, work with you, or pay you, though it wasn't phrased quite that way. Personally, I find this clause and the unofficial attitude quite disturbing. As a normal lens the FA 35 f2.0 would seem to be a better choice, it's a stop faster and about $300 less expensive, (and still available from places like BH photo new), and I like a bit more working distance than a normal macro usually gives, so though I don't have one, the DFA 100mm seems to me to be a better choice for macro. Re: Terms of Service
Doug, Although I don't have any English/American background but I think you're not overreacting. These folks are hmmm how to put it - hmmm, I wouldn't deal with them. Boris Doug Franklin wrote: Howdy, folks, We've had several discussions over the years about the terms of use of various web sites and services. Re: PESO - Whiteout conditions
Really, I am in no way competent to say if this is a good picture or not, but what happened to me is that on my 15 screen, Safari not running full-screen, only the top-left three-quarters of the image showed up. I wondered why it wasn't loading. Then I thought I had some smears on my display, and only then did I realize the picture was actually loaded when I scrolled around to find the two persons in the lower right corner. And I am still not sure what the actual motive is, besides the two persons... mountains? Is it supposed to look like that? Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
I wouldn't want to undercut pros that are charging reasonable (and I'm not saying they are) )prices. They are trying to make a living in a very competitive and difficult business. I disagree with that line of thinking. The open market is based on competition. IMHO, it's within an individual's right to charge whatever they want... or to charge nothing at all if they choose. It's not his responsibility to ensure that industry standards are upheld and that others in the same field of work can clear their desired profit margin. Quite the contrary, it's up to them (those who charge more) to justify their prices in a market when every tom, dick, and hank have a digital camera and are willing to give it a go for substantially less. I guess I believe that the photographers prerogative, quality of the product and demand should drive the price... not industry price fixing. An example of this is wedding photography here my area. If I can't find someone who wants to pay $1000 for my wedding photography services, then chances are that I don't have $1000 material. LIkewise, I know (of) several photogs that charge $3500+ just to shoot the wedding (i.e., no product included)... yet they don't seem to be the least bit concerned with the seemingly countless number of wannabe's on craigslist (for example) that are giving away their services for next to nothing. At the end of the day, their product speaks for itself: Pay my fee and get lesser quality. Whether by demand, supply, ambition, or plain old weeding out, the market will correct everything in the end. It's an interesting debate, nonetheless. I wouldn't be surprised if most photogs agree with the price-fixing mentality, but personally I just don't buy it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
I don't think that by me charging $60.00 per hour to do an onsite shoot, and another guy charges $1400 is by any means degrading his quality or business. I don't think $1400 is a justifiable fee for something like this. If he is only doing high end clients, they will never be calling me anyway. I'm to cheap to be good. I agree i should let them know i am starting out, not in photography, but this type of work. As i get better and more confident, i then would feel better in charging a bit more. As far as making $30,000, thats would be a tad less than what i made in the survey game, so its not a big deal, but that would be if i only didi photography. Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
Bill, i think your right, i like the first shot and as a dog owner, if i had one, would appreciate a good portrait, but would be very happy to see them in action. I understand a bird dog owner would like to see them in action, running, catching etc. I would have to have agood sit down with the owner for sure. I would be happy to try what they want, i just don';t have studio stuff, so and but, i am lead to believe from my wife, that out door action with a few portrait types will be what they are looking for. Natural light at home seems to be prevelent on the few google pagesi found. Thanks for the tips. I have heard a lot of good comments from these photos, and some of their customers have new dogs and cats and have inquired if i would be available to do a shoot. Of course i am, they just have to get dates organized etc, but i;'m at odds for rates. Just recently in the Toronto Star newspaper, they had a 1/2 page article on a couple of pet photographers scattered around Canada, Toronto, Vancouver and another city i forget. These people were charging upwards of $1400 for the sitting and CD. One was a very experienced person, the other two just getting in to it. I have no intention of charging these rate, but i feel a shoot at a place both owner and animal are comfortabel with, own home, local park etc would be best. Try some posed shots, follow the animal around and grab the animal doing its thing candids. Not sure if i explained that well, but hopefully YKWIM. Am i in the ball park out am i way out of line to start off I don't differentiate between dogs, cats, and people as far as portrait work goes. $60.00 per hour for time, whether it be shooting or post processing is reasonable. If you are supplying your own backdrops, make sure you have a cleaning clause in your contract. You may be able to get away with mopping dog piss off your muslin and then taking it to a posrtait session for people, but I guarantee that if you put another dog on it ever, you will not get any pictures of the dog doing anything other than sniffing the spot that was messed on. Cat effluent is even worse. Depending on the breed of dog, you will find that customer expectations are very different. The owner of a gun dog will probably want a very different style of picture than the owner of a toy breed. As an example, my dogs, as handsome as they are, look far more impressive in any picture in this series: http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/beachday/beach_fun.html than they do in this: http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/fellas/portraits/jnb2938.html. Getting a dog to chase something is a great way to get action pictures, even if all they are chasing is their boss. However, yer basic Chihuahua owner is more likely to want something like this: http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/temp/chi3287.jpg Good luck William Robb -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Equine Photography www.caughtinmotion.com http://brooksinthecountry.blogspot.com/ Ontario Canada -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I think you are a rich man when being able to shoot these fantastic auroras.
