RE: DA 16-45 f/4 lens
As I might have said last time this lens got a mention, on my trip to Egypt a couple of years ago more than 70% of my shots were with it. Sharp, not heavy, I found it very useful. I have the same issue with the lens hood as David, though - not a deal-breaker. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of David Parsons Sent: Sunday, 5 December 2010 1:20 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens I've read the reviews and either I have a really good copy, or I'm daft, but I've found the lens to be very capable and the perfect wide to medium lens for me. It's sharp wide open. It takes about 85-90% of the pictures that I shoot. The only problem that I've had is that the lens hood detents on the hood bayonet have worn down. It makes the hood loose, but that is a minor issue. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Brief but direct encounter with Sony SLT-A55
Hello there, great and wise women and men of PDML. I have witnessed Sony SLT-A55 and here is the impressions from that encounter: 1. It is small and light. It is so small that people with bigger hands (unlike me) may have difficulty operating it. 2. A number of operations require that you press buttons on the back of the camera and if you want to do so without taking it away from your eye, it may be a bit difficult at first. But after two-three times I did it, it did not felt awkward at all. 3. The lack of mirror slap is unusual. It is even more unusual that the sound of shutter release /seems/ like it is combined of two distinct sounds. It is not loud, though it is hard to tell if K-7 is quieter. And I did not have K-7 on me to compare them side by side. 4. The EVF. Well, EVFs will rule the world. Seriously. Consider this: a. To perform precision manual focus you simply point you camera where you want, press delete button twice and you get x7.5 magnified area where you can focus as precise as you want. You will also see how shaky your hands, but once you depress ever so slightly the shutter release button, the view returns back to regular and you can compose the shot. My immediate and first impression is that this is /significantly/ more convenient than split focusing screen and magnifying eye cap, simply because you get way more magnification and hence the precision. I tried it and was impressed by how easy the process was and how precise I could focus effectively right out of the box. b. Since this thing is electronic, you can do all kinds of menu related operations without taking the camera off your eye. I can hardly imagine how often such a thing could be useful, but it is there nonetheless. c. I did a but of moving of the camera around rapidly - the response of the VF was sufficiently smooth. Nothing I could object to. d. At the end I did feel a bit of strain in my eyes, but it has to be said that: d1. I couldn't change the diopter correction if there were any. d2. I usually have one or two days of felt eye strain if I change monitors. Then it subsides. May be something similar would have happened if I had this camera for more than 15 minutes. 5. As a funny or peculiar point, I'd like to point out that this camera also has the electronic level that is implemented as a rather odd looking bracket around the center of the screen. 6. And finally, for those of us who like to geotag - this camera has a built-in GPS module that automatically geotags your images. All in all - worthy of any praise and quite excellent camera. You can imagine how hard I was looking for the money tree - it would have been a cool gadget to have for sure. I bought my first DSLR about two weeks ago, a K-x with the 18-55mm, 55-300mm lens kit. I've got a 50mm M f/1.7 on the way, as well as a polarizer and graduated filter. I also picked up a cleaning kit with rocket blower and a manfrotto tripod and head. No one told me the peripherals were going to cost so damn much. I feel like I'm hemorrhaging money. LOL It's sad but true. I know next to nothing about photography. I've read Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson and The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby; both have been a good introduction I think. I'm currently reading Creative Nature Outdoor Photography by Brenda Tharp. Next on the list is The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman. If anyone has suggestions as to which other books I should be reading, I'm all ears. I've never used any image manipulation type software other than Picassa. I'm a Linux user and have evaluated Bibble 5 for a couple evenings. It's crashed on me a few times and sucks all available memory and some swap when it imports RAW and builds thumbnails. I might have to break down and get a MAC at some point, if all Linux image software is this crash prone. Bibble does have some cool tricks though. I really like the heal/clone thing but I suppose other software packages have something similar. OK, I do have a question: Is there a page defining the acronyms used here, like: PESO, GESO, PAW? GESO: Criterium race
Hi all, It's been another year already, the Festival of Cycling has come and gone again. This year I was only able to make it to the criterium race which is a pity as the Long Bays Classic has much better scenery. The upside of the criterium is that they do laps so I get more than one chance to photograph the riders and I also have multiple positions to choose from. http://www.multisport.net.nz/photos/1268-2010-12-05-armstrong-festival-of-cycling-criterium-photos.html The first couple are from the elite women's race which was finishing just as I arrived. The rest are from the elite men's race. The crowd was a lot smaller this year so I was able to move about quite freely and get fairly good positions without much trouble. Gear: K10D, FA* 24mm f/2.0, FA 43mm Limited, FA 100 f/2.8 Macro, FA* 200mm f/2.8, F* 300mm f/4.5. Yes it's a pain swapping primes all the time. That 50-135 would have come in very handy. I really need to get more practice with this stuff. I was really struggling to get good focus as the riders come past at about 50km/h (30mph). BTW I know I haven't posted much from Sydney yet, not enough hours in the day... OT - Paints With Light part 1
He paints with light! Excellent! And right on cue, haven't posted this for ages. 60's British humour - a must read :-) Cheers, Cotty Part 1 (see part 2 email for continuation) The Publicity Photograph by Alan Simpson and Ray Galton transcribed from the long play record Pieces of Hancock (NPL18054) Scenes: 1. A London street. 2. Photographic studio. 3. Mr Hancock's house. Cast: Tony Hancock..minor celebrity Sydney James.his agent. Kenneth Williams.Photographer to the stars, Hilary St. Clair In Hancock's house.Hattie Jaques and Bill Kerr [A London street, day. Tony and Syd are walking to a studio to have some new photos shot for Tony's publicity, something the irritable Mr. Hancock is not entirely happy with...] Tony: So you really think my old fan-photos have been holding me back, Syd? Syd: 'Course they have. I've been telling you that your years. And I'm a good agent, but even I've had trouble getting you work. All because of those photographs. That 'Valentino' one: diabolical, it is. Tony: My 'sheik' pose? It's my favourite! Syd: Yeah. When I started showing it around, they thought I was collecting money for Arab refugees. Tony: You sure the place we're going to is alright? Syd: Alright?? This geyser is the best theatrical photographer in London! I send all my clients to him. He charges fifty knicker a sitting. Tony: Fifty pounds for one photograph?? I want it in postcard size, not Cinerama! Fifty pounds! I made my last film for less than that! Syd: Well it's worth every penny. This boy is fabulous. He does beautiful retouch-jobs. He'll make you look like a million dollars! He'll take them wrinkles out, get rid of the crow's feet under your eyes, pin your ears back, cover up some of that loose stuff around your neck, straighten the nose out a bit, put the eyes further apart - Tony: What an attractive picture you'd paint of me. I'm having no retouching done on my photographs. I face the world as I am. Syd: Well, we'll see what he says anyway. He might have some ideas when he sees you. He's never been defeated yet. This is it: 'Hilary St. Clair'. Tony: Oh my word. I'll bet he's all corduroys and blow-waves. Syd: Shaddup - get inside! (They step into Mr. St. Clair's studio) Hilary: No no no! Don't move! Now stay just where you are...the light catches you perfectly! Tony: Who? Me? Hilary: Oh! A fusion of shere heaven! Don't move! I must take you a shere poetry of line and composition! Tony: Get away. Hilary: Just tilt the head so the sunlight dances on your hair. Tony: (mocking) Oh you mean like this? Hilary: Yes! Yes! I shall call it 'In Juxtaposition'. Tony: (still mocking) No no no no. What about: 'Textures'. Hilary: Yes! Yes! That's even better! Tony: (to Syd) I'm getting out of here. Hilary: (taking a shot) I've got it! Thank you so much. That's going to be very very sheesh. Well, I'm sorry Hilary. You know how it is. Lot's of work - Hilary: I know how terribly tedious it has been. I know I'm the same. Absolutely months since I've seen the Albert Hall. Syd: Yeah, and me. Tony: (to Syd) He's talking about music, not all-in wrestling. Syd: Yeah, well. Look Hilary, I've got a customer here for you. Hilary: (eyeing Hancock) Rather perculiar friends you have Sydney. Most quaint. Syd: Yeah, well, don't start a punch-up Hilary. I want you to take some snaps. Hilary: Snaps, Sydney?? I don't take snaps! I paint with light! Tony: (mocking in a high-pitched voice) Oh swipe me, he paints with light! (pause - aside to Syd) Paints with light. Hilary: I don't think I like your friend Sydney. I wish I hadn't snapped, I mean Photographed him. I think I should open the camera and let the light in! Syd: Now calm down Hilary. All we want is a set of publicity photos. I want you to get the best out of him. Hilary: Oh, let's have a look then. (to Hancock) I say, you. Stand under my arc lights. Hmm. Turn around. Ugh! Heavens. I'm going to have to use a lot of shadow. There's sort of a lot to hide, isn't there! Tony: I will slosh him Syd. So help me, I will slosh him. One more remark and I'll wrap that enlarger around his neck! Haven't been insulted like this since I went to the Turkish baths. Syd: Alright Hilary, take no notice. Just do the best you can, boy. Hilary: Oh, let's see now. (to Hancock) Undo your shirt to the waist. Tony: Oh dear. Hilary: Oh. Oh what a pity, no hairs on the chest. Never mind, I can scratch some in on the negative. Tony: You are not scratching any hairs in on my negative. I'm not the hairy type. I'm more the smooth-skin 'Lex Barker' type. Syd: If Hilary says you're gonna have hairs, you're gonna have hairs! He knows what's best. Hilary: I say. What sort of legs have you got? Tony: Don't you think you're going a bit too far, my man? My legs are *my* business! Syd: Shaddup Hancock. Hilary must have a good reason for asking. Hilary: Well yes. I thought perhaps a beach-combing outfit might look rather attractive. Syd: You see that Hancock? A beach-comber. A wondering nomad. A scavanger. He's got your character already! Hilary: I know, a straw hat, the shirt open to the waist and tied in a knot, trousers cut, very raggedly, just below the knees, standing barefoot in the sand, palm trees waving in the background... Tony: I know. Looking inside oysters for bars of coconut chocolate. No thank you! Syd: He's right, Hancock. He's right. It's very 'you'. Hilary: Oh yes. It's the only one. He'll look delicious! Rip his trousers at the knees! Syd: Come here. Tony: No! Syd! Please no! Syd: Come here! (ripping fabric) Tony: No! Syd! Stop it! Syd: There they are. Tony: Well well. So much for me clerical grey drainpipes. I had these especially tailored! This is 24 and 6 off your bill for a start! Hilary: 24 and 6? Tony: Yes, mate! 24 and 6. I don't buy rubbish you know! Hilary: Aren't your legs white! (more ripping sounds) Tony: One pair of long underwear. 12 and 6. Hilary: Yah. Well, that's better. So those are your legs? Tony: Yes, *these* are my legs. If you don't take that smirk off your face, you'll be on the end of one of them in a minute. Hilary: Well, let's face it. They are rather odd, aren't they! Tony: What's odd about them? I've got one on this side and one on that side, haven't I? What more do you want? Hilary: No, I'm sorry, I don't think the legs ought to be in. Tony: Pardon? After slashing my trousers about? How dare you! My legs are out, I'm out. Syd: Aw, you better keep the legs in, Hilary. Have him standing in water up to his knees. That'll do it. Hilary: Up to his straw hat I think would be better. On 12/5/2010 1:40 PM, Derby Chang wrote: Hi Igor, /the rest snipped/ Only tangentially related - my experience with Sigma EX DG 24-60/2.8 seems to correspond well with what Derby reported. Wide open it kind of glows but in a rather pleasant, soft, portrait-like way. Stop it even half a click and it becomes bitingly sharp. Few negative points you might want to consider: * The way it is reported in EXIF data. My zoom lens is reported as just Tamron or Sigma lens. Not that I care, but you might. * It seems to rotate the other way around than Pentax lenses. * Mine had a bit of back/front focus issue that I corrected by -7 points correction in K-7. Previous owner indicated -3 points correction in his K20D. * It is very big and pretty heavy. I am thinking off the top of my head that it has 82 mm filter diameter, the 20/1.8. Finally, Petteri Sulonen has written a review about this lens some time ago. You can read it here: http://www.prime-junta.net/pont/Reviews/a_Sigma_20_f1-8/a_Sigma_20_mm_f-1.8.html It is a bit dated, this review, but still it seems to contain a number of valid points. I held once Sigma EX DG 24/1.8 and it wasn't /that/ big. My experience with 24-60/2.8 leads me to two things: * Sigma EX lenses are actually better than one may think based on the impressions from various forums, etc. * I am thinking of selling my Tamron 28-75/2.8 simply because it sees virtually no use since I bought and matched to the Sigma. May be a forlorn task, but we'll see... Just to clarify what the PUG is all about for those new to the list: The PUG is this list's monthly themed photo gallery - it has nothing to do with the 'Pentax Photo Gallery' run by Pentax USA. Basically, list members submit an image based on the monthly theme, the images are compiled into a gallery and each month the gallery is uploaded for the enjoyment of all. The galleries are archived permanently and you can go back as far as 1998 to enjoy the images submitted in the past. The PUG is hosted on the Komkon server, facilitated by PDMLer Igor Roshchin, for which we are extremely grateful. There probably wont be too many obvious changes to the way the PUG operates. Igor has installed the scripting software for the Submission Form on Komkon, so there will be a new location for that form but, like Scott, I'll be compiling the galleries using JAlbum, so they will look much the same as in the past. I'll post further details and themes for 2011 in a few days. Re: PESO: Leave the Light On
Real black and white (i.e. - not the c41 bw) has the potential to be sharper than color because of the way it's made. As to enlargements, I know lots of folks claim that 8x10 is the largest you can go with 35mm but that's just not true. Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens
I have owned one since they first came out and I'm extremely happy with its IQ. It's been by far my most used lens for my first 6 years of digital photography, now replaced by the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8/4 HSM thanks its longer reach and silent operation. Another important plus of the 16-45 is there are no faulty samples around, as it happens so often with the DA* 16-50 f/2.8. That was confirmed by the Pentax service for Italy, where a technician once told me that the 16-45/4 is the most reliable Pentax lens in recent years, with a zero-fault score. They never get any 16-45/4 back from unhappy purchasers. The only problem can be it only reaches 45mm, but that's hardly a surprise ;-) Dario - Original Message - From: David Mann d...@multisport.net.nz To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2010 9:10 AM Subject: DA 16-45 f/4 lens I just noticed the camera shop's ad also has this lens on special (not the 16-50 f/2.8 unfortunately). A number of operations require that you press buttons on the back of the camera and if you want to do so without taking it away from your eye, it may be a bit difficult at first. But after two-three times I did it, it did not felt awkward at all. It generally works well, some things are a bit awkward though, but I rarely find myself changing most settings at eyelevel. 3. The shutter is normally open and fires twice (closes before the exposure, opens for the exposure, closes again then opens for the LV feed). This 'fires twice' sound is common to all the EVIL cameras. 4. The EVF. Well, EVFs will rule the world. Seriously. Consider this: a. I tried it and was impressed by how easy the process was and how precise I could focus effectively right out of the box. And that's the killer app for the EVF. I replaced the K-x with the A33 solely because of the EVF making precision focus easier, especially in low light. It's also surprisingly easy to focus accurately without the magnification when using an EVF. b. Since this thing is electronic, you can do all kinds of menu related operations without taking the camera off your eye. The AF speed is amazing for a camera at this pricepoint, as good as anything else in the sub-$1k USD range. In really low light the AF is as good or better than the D300 on the centre point (I was stunned when I found my A33 could AF in any light where I could reasonably get an exposure). In the past IIRC the past part of gallery was set aside for non themed submissions. I don't think that Scott stopped accepting those submissions but I don't think that JAlbum supports a way to segregate a second sub-album on the same page. Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- Where's the Kaboom? Re: PESO: Leave the Light On
From: Walter Gilbert That's a relief. Thanks for the info. By the way ... is b/w 35mm more forgiving than color when printing enlargements, or are you still pretty much limited to around 8 x 10 before the grain starts to get obtrusive? And how much difference can I expect out of professional grade over standard consumer grade films? Not a lot really. Film emulsion changes as it ages. Consumer film is made to age gracefully under the assumption that it won't get used real soon so it gradually reaches peak performance while sitting in the warehouse or on the vendor's shelf. Professional film is designed to be at peak performance *RIGHT NOW*. Mixed bag there. The Confectionery violated that neutrality in 1861, (as if a State could remain a part of the Union and be neutral, I can't think of any theory of law under the Constitution as it was even then understood where that was legal). I've personally made poster-sized prints from 35mm, and I know some billboards back in the day were shot with 35mm. It depends on the film used, and the image itself. I think one problem with small format enlargements is that folks blow it up huge then look at it inches from their face. This looks horrible, they'll say, no kidding. Now, I don't know if I'd trust the scanner I bought to enlarge 35 bigger than 8x10. It depends on the scanner resolution. I have a Nikon CoolscanIV ED that does 2900dpi scan resolution. That gives me the equivalent of about an 11Mp camera from a 35mm frame. That's at least as good as the K10D. If you're getting 4000dpi scans, figure you're closer to a 20Mp camera. According to Epson, the V500 is capable of 6400x9600dpi (?). I don't know if it will really give you that resolution, but if you get something like 6400x6400dpi that would be equivalent to 54Mp. I think I'd figure on something between 2400dpi and 4000dpi with the V500. How large a print you can get depends a lot on the process. I wouldn't try to print anything below 250dpi on an ink-jet printer, so with the file from the CoolscanIV ED, my largest ink-jet print would be 10x16. RA4 prints like from a mini-lab are different. You can actually get acceptable images from 150dpi - not super perhaps, but acceptable - that would allow you to go up to 18x27 from a CoolscanIV ED file. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
