Re: COMMENTS: Pillion passenger - Home, James!
Firstly, many thanks for the encouraging comments. I will follow the posts with interest look forward to the annual book. I am a retired Analytical Chemist living in Phalaborwa, a small Lowveld town in the extreme NE of SA supported by copper phosphate mines. The climate is hot with about 530mm rain per year. I love being in the bush we are blessed with having the Kruger Park right on our doorstep. In Kruger, I find many tourists are more interested in flaunting their expensive equipment than actually taking photos. My photography has been quite amateurish has progressed from a Brownie box one of those fold up things (medium format!) in my youth to an S1a at university later to K-mount. I did my own processing in the B/W days but stopped when I changed to colour (prints slides). Only the ME Super still works I have been shooting a couple of rolls a year. In 2011 I was given a C*non 500N with short long Sigma zooms decided a C*non digital would be the answer so I bought a 1000D at a bargain price on a sale. Sadly, the old Sigma lenses are not fully compatible can only work in AV or M modes at max aperture. Plan B was a S/H K110D body on which I could use the the FA 28-80 100-300 from the dud Z-70. So far I am quite happy with this combination can also use all the other lenses in M mode. I feel a need to expand my photography beyond the stereotyped family holiday stuff hope the list will help me to do that. I have never tried street or studio photography. Game photography can be exciting but it takes luck patience to get unusual shots which tell a story. I still find myself trapped in film mode haven't got used to the idea of taking a series of shots yet! And then - post processing - still a lot to learn there. A logistics problem
I have to cover the reveal of the seventh generation Corvette tomorrow night for the NY Times. The paper wants to go live with a photo and my article (which has been largely prewritten without actually seeing the car) within about a minute of the embargo being lifted. Since the embargo will be lifted only when the cover is pulled off the car, I'll have about 45 seconds to shoot a photo, upload it to my laptop and send it to the mother ship. I've practiced a bit today with my computer propped up on my knees and my camera hanging from a neckstrap. Using the USB cord, which I can preinstall on the computer, is faster than taking the card out of the camera. I was going to shoot jpeg, but I experimented with both jpeg and RAW, because I anticipate some awful highlights on the stage. It takes me about ten seconds longer to do a quick RAW conversion, crushing the highlights just a bit and pulling up shadows slightly. I think I'm going to do it. Even if I shoot jpeg, I'll probably want to tweak it, and I'm much more accustomed to working with RAW. BTW, after I upload the photo, I'll have to file amended copy, but that's a problem for another venue. General Motors has done a good job of keeping the lid on the new Corvette. There are only renderings on the web and spy photos of test-track cars draped in camouflage. And the automaker refuses to release any photos until after the reveal. The press conference where that will happen is taking place in an industrial building far from downtown Detroit. It's actually in a pretty scary neighborhood, well off the beaten path. I assume that's part of the secrecy plan. The surrounding blocks will be undoubtedly be crawling with cops and private security. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some helicopters overhead as well. Should be fun. If I get it right. paul -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That does sound fun! I read this morning that there will be 6000 journalists covering the show this year, most will probably be there with you at the Corvette unveiling. There won't be 6000 journalists at the Corvette reveal. It's by invitation only and probably limited to a few hundred. I have copy modifications ready and on the computer. Thanks. Yesterday, someone commented in another thread that klein bottles are very difficult to photograph. I suspect that they were thinking of a klein bottle being a four dimensional rather than a three dimensional object, more like a tesseract. I felt compelled to take half an hour and prove him wrong. It's impressive how easy it is to get decent semi macro shots of something like that when you use a studio flash with a huge softbox and make sure that the nearest wall is a ways back from the light. My friend Sheba does some amazing artwork, and is actually one of the people pushing the state of the art in 3-d printing. http://bathsheba.com I have several of her sculptures, perhaps my favorite is the klein bottle, bottle opener. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8370075454/ This shot was fun, because while the softbox was great for photographing the sculpture, it was a bit tough for photographing the bottle. I also would have preferred some sort of rim lighting to highlight the edge of the bottle. So, keeping in the spirit if quick and dirty, I had Zab cover the worst of the reflections with her left hand, and rotated the bottle slightly so that the back label defined the edge. I'm actually quite pleased with that shot, both from it turning out a lot better than I was expecting, and the fact that I did it with only one light. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That said, that could be the attraction. It didn't even occur to me that he was doing anything but thinking about a photograph that he had just looked at. The problem with the photo is that it isn't immediately obvious that the guy is the subject. It's a bit late to go back and reshoot it with the 50/1.2, wide open on him, for very shallow depth of field, and maybe a little bit of fill so he isn't in the dark while the photos are well lit, preferably with a more disturbing, thought provoking photo in the background. :-) On one hand, the ambivalence of the subject does help tell a story. I kind of like photos where at first you think it's a photograph of one thing (the photos on display), and then you realize that it's about something else (someone thinking about the photos). On the other hand, if it were my photo, I'd probably go in with the adjustment brush and make him a little brighter. I might also use the brush on the near wall of photos, (which seem like they might be what the camera focused on) and blur them out a bit, to fake a narrower depth of field. If I wasn't going to be brutal I would say good pic! I've had a few clients sending me checks lately (yay!) and had been toying with the idea of getting a new camera. I even considered one of the $319.00 K-01 close-outs from Amazon - it could serve as a light meter for my meterless Pentax 67 that would double as a camera if necessary. But I don't shoot with the 67 often enough to justify that and wouldn't use it on its own much. I may acquire a compact camera to serve that purpose later, though. (Anyone know if there are any good compacts that go below ISO 100?) So anyway, I bought an electric guitar instead. -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I often miss my old R80RT airhead for it's being a relatively comfortable bike, able to carry a bunch of stuff. But for sheer fun to ride, nothing I've ever ridden has beat the ninja 250 I used to own. It was light, nimble, easy to park, and on public roads I could ride it at a lot closer to 10/10ths, because it took all of it's motor to get up to fun speeds, and I was still going less than twice the speed limit. I've ridden a couple of nice 600 or 700 cc bikes (hurricane, ducatti ...) and I was pretty much twice the speed limit before they were even breathing hard. I think that nearly 30 years later, I'd have a lot more appreciation for my first bike, a honda 350/4, though if I were shopping for one now, I'd probably go for the 400/4 super sport. When I was in Singapore, I fell in love with the Aprillia 250. Re: Didn't buy a camera today
Enjoy your guitar! An electric guitar would be utterly useless for me, I'm all thumbs on stringed instruments. A compact electric piano or synth .. yeah. :-) ... I may acquire a compact camera to serve that purpose later, though. (Anyone know if there are any good compacts that go below ISO 100?) IMO, a good hand-held light meter does a much better job of being a light meter than any compact camera does. I recommend the Sekonic L-358 ... I've got the L-328 which has served me very well for more than a dozen years, but I'm really thinking of moving up to the 358 model's larger integrating hemisphere, higher sensitivity, etc etc soon. A compact camera that has ISO 100 and a decent sized (APS-C) sensor ... Hmm. Well, no, I don't know of one. However, fitted with a filter adapter, I can get down to ISO 1.5 using the Leica X2 and a B+W type 106 ND filter (six stops). Does a lovely job, and is a great camera with clean results up to ISO 6400, even 128000 in a pinch too. Excellent lens and controls. I often have problems with photo.net where the ad server screws up and stops the page from loading. I suspect there's a regional aspect to it as ad providers try to be clever with their targeting, so it'll seem inconsistent among different groups of people. But that's no excuse for photo.net to be so poorly implemented that an ad provided by a third party can stop the site from even functioning. Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: IMO, a good hand-held light meter does a much better job of being a light meter than any compact camera does. Well, yeah. But it can't double as a camera when need be. :-) And for my purposes, a digital camera works just as well as a light meter. For the nature photography stuff I do the histogram and (especially) highlight and shadow blinkies let me get my exposures perfect in situations where an incident light meter would be impossible to use and readings with a spotmeter would take too much time and fuss. I've used my digital SLRs in the past this way and I get perfect exposures for slide film 10 out of 10 times (which is actually one too many because PrintFile negative pages for 6x7 hold only nine slides and I'd like to be able to toss one out). In a studio or other reasonably controlled situation a genuine light meter is the way to go. When standing in the middle of a stream on the side of a mountain and shooting a waterfall, I choose a digital snapshot and histogram every time (it even gives be a back up photo if the lab screws up). -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It's impressive how easy it is to get decent semi macro shots of something like that when you use a studio flash with a huge softbox and make sure that the nearest wall is a ways back from the light. Re: A logistics problem
If Jeremy Clarxon of Top Gear pops up, pass him regards ;-). On a serious note though, I'd team up with Larry here - eyefi card should probably make your life way simpler. Also, you could pre-set your camera with white balance and other stuff and shoot RAW+JPG, then it may save you time for RAW processing when you're on location. I can assure you that it is indeed the case. :-) Well, he's not the subject indeed. It is the cross product of the expressions of the shot on the wall on the right and him... Or at least this was my intention... On one hand, the ambivalence of the subject does help tell a story. Brushes, brushes... Be simple, Larry and people will look up to you :-). I already applied some amount of brightening by means of gradient filter of LR... Mighty good things these filters are, if you have a photo that has distinct areas of different brightness... If I wasn't going to be brutal I would say good pic! Likewise, it is a very good picture as it is, but you wanted me to be brutal, and like a good sadist, I aim to please. I did not know you were a sadist, let alone a good one. I would suggest you're the other way around but it is you who insist on using brushes on your own photographs... :-) To alleviate such allusions in the future I have devised a notion of BH comment. I hope that similarity with the trade mark of a well known retailer will take your mind off unwieldy things...
