A couple of pesos from yesterday

2013-12-03 Thread Larry Colen
I was feeling a bit out of sorts yesterday so I went for a drive. I ended
up near the coast just a little before sunset so I kicked around a bit
with the camera, because, well, it was sunset and I was at the Ocean.

I saw this plaque Safety Follows Wisdom, from 1931, and for some reason
it made me think of Frank, so I took this picture of it. I hope he likes
it:

Here's one of some tidepools, and if you look closely I think that that
is a squadron of pelicans in the background:

I must ask. Is this in AF.C or AF.S? In AF.C that's to be expected if
it shifts focus between foreground and background and is hunting.

As near as I can come to the sound I hear from the lens, is a rapid
fire focus motor machine gun. It's most often heard after having lost
focus and is attempting to again achieve focus. It's difficult to
assign any other specifics.

I usually set the AF to 5 focus sensors when hunting BIF. I've
found, however, that the described event can, also, happen when using
spot focus.

There is the usual intermittent factor that adds uncertainty in
determining responsible circumstances.

 Very busy weekend.

Yesterday was the third or fourth annual Shop 'til you Drop Alleycat. For
those of you who may be new-ish around here an alleycat is an unsanctioned
(and kind of illegal) bike messenger race through the city streets. There are
checkpoints but otherwise routing and order is up to the individual racer.

In this particular race the messengers have to go to grocery stores and buy
certain food items. They must provide receipts to prove they went to the
 appropriate stores.

The winner is the one who finishes first; failure to bring the proper
foodstuff and receipts to the finish line results in disqualification.

After the race all the foodstuffs were brought to a local fire hall for the
firefighters' annual holiday food drive for the local food banks.

Which brings us to the following group photo:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/12/shop-til-you-drop-2013.html?m=1

110 cans of food donated and lots of fun had. Ben (with the long beard, left
 side of pic) won.

This year I decided on colour and used flash for fill.

 Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

photographically - yeah a little unsharp and could darken and up the
contrast a bit...  mainly I wanted to show the length of the stem with
the buds on it as compared to a few days ago - and the big blooms last
 year.

having relatively few new members here. Those who have been here awhile have
long since settled on the best kit for their purpose that their financial

ready and able to buy that particular item.

My buy from the list process has always been in reverse: When I've got the

So far that's what's netted me my K10D, K7, and now K5.

Except for Bill and me, there just doesn't seem to be the same level of
passion for acquiring new or new used gear within this group. And that has
been true for a couple of years now. The last two times I tried to sell
good quality modern lenses and/or cameras, everything went to eBay after
first being offered here. (Offered here at a lower price than I netted via
eBay, so I don't think my prices were off the mark.) I think in part it is
due to having relatively few new members here. Those who have been here
awhile have long since settled on the best kit for their purpose that
their financial circumstances will allow. It is going to be a rare event
when your lens or camera body for sale happens to show up on PDML just at
the time someone is ready and able to buy that particular item.

So I went into Henry's in Halifax today to pick up some Ilfosol 3 that
I had ordered and spotted a used DA* 16-50/2.8 on display. This store
does not usually sell used lenses, but there it was, for $749.00. I
looked at it and played with it and told them I wasn't interested. At
that point they asked me what selling price would make me interested?
Anyway, we started dickering and a short time later I walked out with
the lens, having paid them $660 for it.

It seems to be in fine condition. The only problem I can spot is that
the lens hood is loose in its bayonet, but I probably won't be using
that, so I don't care. It comes with a 90 day warranty, so I'm happy. I
hope to get out tomorrow to play with it.

Mine has that problem to. If you put a tiny dab of epoxy on the bumps for
locking it in place, it will tighten the hood back down again by taking out
the slop for where it attaches.

Re: FSF: K-5 (Canon ee-S, magnifying eye piece), DA 21, DFA 50 macro

2013-12-03 Thread Rob Studdert
I would love a new pair of K3's but I've decided that I just can't
justify the expenditure at the moment. I've plenty of other less
interesting things to spend money on and the K5's are usable though
not optimal for what I'm shooting currently. I think a Sony RX100 II
is on my horizon, it will genuinely expand my photographic reach and
of course Sony have such great, affordable and reliable prioducts ;)

Sorry Boris, I hope that you get what you need for the items
eventually, like Godfrey I will attempt to sell some of my excess gear
late January.

Cheers,

That's the case with me. I have all the lenses I want and I'm very
happy with the K-5. I just don't feel the need for gear at the moment
and I'm happy, well, *doing* photography.

I've done more photography with my K3 already than I did with my K5 the
entire time I had the thing.

 Very busy weekend.

Yesterday was the third or fourth annual Shop 'til you Drop Alleycat.
For those of you who may be new-ish around here an alleycat is an
unsanctioned (and kind of illegal) bike messenger race through the city
streets. There are checkpoints but otherwise routing and order is up to
the individual racer.

In this particular race the messengers have to go to grocery stores
and buy certain food items. They must provide receipts to prove they
went to the appropriate stores.

The winner is the one who finishes first; failure to bring the proper
foodstuff and receipts to the finish line results in disqualification.

After the race all the foodstuffs were brought to a local fire hall
for the firefighters' annual holiday food drive for the local food
banks.

Which brings us to the following group photo:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/12/shop-til-you-drop-2013.html?m=1

110 cans of food donated and lots of fun had. Ben (with the long
beard, left side of pic) won.

This year I decided on colour and used flash for fill.

 Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Interesting. I've see lots of white ones and occasionally some yellow but I
don't think I've ever seen them in pink.

2013-12-03 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Slot Canyon and Valley of Fire are pretty close to one another, so much so that
the folks shooting one are almost certainly going to shoot the other at nearly
the same time on the workshops that parade photographers through the canyon
lands area.

But that's really what I mean. I've seen so many photos of that area, taken by
so many many people, that I can no longer distinguish between them. :-|
