Yes. Hibisci are somewhat unusual in that the 5 stamens at the top are
encased in the same sheath as the anthers lower down. Everything is quite
large making Hibiscus flowers ideal dissection objects for young botanists.

After touting the virtues of the modern Sigma lens my work horse Sigma
17-50/2.8 started playing up last night during a fairly important
shoot. The zoom ring now sticks periodically at a point which makes it
difficult to use in the flurry of a stage event :( I bought a
17-70/2.8-4 to tide me over whilst the other is being repaired as
Pentax and Sigma lenses are handled by the same distributor here and
they are not know for their rush to repair gear.

Re: Sometimes Time doesn't fly

2014-03-08 Thread Paul Stenquist
It varies. With the long lenses, I start by setting it for the mid range, then
check to see how accurate it is at the focal length I use most. With a wide to
mid range, it’s easiest to see differences in focus at the long end, so I set
it there, then check for the mid range. The DA* 16-50 needed a plus 4
adjustment. That would be enough to make it seem soft without correction, and
backfocus isn’t always easy to recognize in daily use. Most of my lenses
required no adjustment with the K3, so I’m going to recheck the DA* 16-50 after
using it for a while, but I think I nailed it at plus 4. Each generation of
Pentax cameras has seemed better than the previous in regard to not requiring a
lot of adjustment.

What firmware were you using?

A dpreview poster claims to have found a bug in 1.02 for the K-3 (a
problem that cropped up only after he upgraded). Not the SAME problem
as Rob's, but illustrates the point.

It is possible that there are other bugs that need to be reported and
stamped out for future firmware releases. Rob's problem may be one of
them.

Re: Sometimes Time doesn't fly

Faintly? Does it have the vapors?

On 3/7/2014 4:43 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote:

I bumped my DA* 60-250 when I took a spill last August. It was in a soft lens
case and there was no apparent damage, but the next time I used it the images
were soft in places. Did a brick wall test and discovered that the focus field
was no longer flat. Evidently, the elements had been knocked out of alignment.
Sent it to CRIS. They told me it would have to go to Japan since they didn’t
have the right tools to work on that lens. They said it would take about eight
weeks. I told them that worked for me since I could get by without it until the
auto show in January, at which point I would like to have it. It came back to
me in December. I repeated the brick wall test, and while it was better, it was
still a bit soft on the left side of the frame. Sent my test pics to CRIS. They
said sent the lens back to us. I did; they tested as well and agreed with my
finding. They then contacted Japan. Japan said it was within spec. I disagreed
vehemently. With some help from Ricoh marketing, and pushing from CRIS, Japan
agreed to replace the lens. And Ricoh marketing loaned by a 17-70 and 16-45 to
tide me over. It took another eight weeks for Pentax to send the replacement.
Today, it faintly arrived, almost exactly six months from the day I first sent
the old lens in for repair. But I’m very appreciative of the help from Ricoh
and CRIS, and I can’t really fault Pentax. They replaced a lens that had been
damaged with a new one. Although I would think they should have been able to
repair the old one satisfactorily. Seems the 16-50 is not only hard to assemble
at the factory, it’s tough to repair as well. Tested the new one and set the
fine focus adjustment. I'm now good to go. So I shot a clock. Like many other
clocks it’s inscribed “Tempus Fugit.” Fugettaboutit.

It varies. With the long lenses, I start by setting it for the mid range,
then check to see how accurate it is at the focal length I use most. With a
wide to mid range, it’s easiest to see differences in focus at the long end,
so I set it there, then check for the mid range. The DA* 16-50 needed a plus
4 adjustment. That would be enough to make it seem soft without correction,
and backfocus isn’t always easy to recognize in daily use. Most of my lenses
required no adjustment with the K3, so I’m going to recheck the DA* 16-50
after using it for a while, but I think I nailed it at plus 4. Each
generation of Pentax cameras has seemed better than the previous in regard
to not requiring a lot of adjustment.

Re: K3 card failure

2014-03-08 Thread John

That's what I'm trying to find out.

Maybe I misread, but I thought he was expecting it to switch back to
card #1 immediately as soon as he installed the new card in the #1 slot.

The manual says When the memory card in SD1 slot becomes full, data is
saved to the card in SD2. If it says anything about switching back to
SD1 if you put a new card in that slot, I didn't find it.

Rob's problem may be one of
them.

Card #2 took over, but when I replaced card #1, it stayed on #2.
I had to fiddle with the menu settings to get it back to #1.

It's been a lovely warm spring day today here in Olde Londonville, so I had
a nice walk along the river near my house. Here, by way of contrast with
Frank's ice-bikers, is Mr. Sandman:
http://www.web-options.com/Crusoe/content/20140308_143434541_iOS_large.html

If you stay in the same place and turn 180 degrees you see this:
http://www.web-options.com/Crusoe/content/20140308_143521739_iOS_large.html

You can see an end-of-terrace house with its chimney breasts showing -
that's the street where I live. There probably used to be another house on
the end of the terrace, but a bomb landed there during the war, and that's
likely to be why the breasts are visible.

In next to no time that building site will be this:
http://www.westproperties.co.uk/portfolio_greenwich.html
and you won't be able to cycle on the beach anymore. There won't be a beach.

Pictures taken with a mobile phone.

The last couple of days Meg and I have been on our own. We left Boris to get
on with his own life, and we headed north. Yesterday we spent around the
northern portion of the Sea of Galilee and on up into the Golan Heights.
Some great bird viewing in the late afternoon at the Hula Valley Nature
Preserve, temporary residence for thousands upon thousands of migrating
birds. Cranes currently seem to be in the majority, but some nice ducks as
well. I didn't have my birding kit with me but have a few marginally
acceptable captures. Today was mostly travel as we headed south along the
Jordan River and the Dead Sea to Ein Gede Kibbutz where we'll stay for a
couple of night. A very rewarding stop at Qumran along the way. My expanding
Israel gallery (minus Jerusalem) is here:

OT: Suggestions for Anti-virus software?

2014-03-08 Thread John
I mentioned here before that I have acquired a Mac Mini that's supposed
to be a little home recording studio. I'm getting ready to un-box it and
set it up, and I already know I'm going to have to connect it to the
internet for software authentication. (I've been reading the manual ...
gives a whole new meaning to fine print.)

Anyway, I know Macs aren't supposed to get viruses, but I'd rather be
safe than sorry.

So, before I take the plunge plug it in, I'd like suggestions for
anti-virus software for the Mac.

Also, do Macs have a hosts file?

On Windoze, I use a robust hosts file to block unwanted SPAM Malware
sites.

I don't know anything about AV software for Macs but I do know they have
have a hosts file and I'm pretty sure it's called hosts.
