2014-08-14 Thread Igor Roshchin

Darren,

You probably are aware of this, but just in case:
I found that the metallic paper is less forgiving with
respect to the blown highlights. In addition, the color gamut for
that paper is slightly smaller than that for a regular paper.
So, to avoid surprises, I encourage to you "preview" function in
Photoshop (I am not sure that it is possible to do in LR, at least up
to LR-3) for the proper mpix metallic paper profile.

PESO and question -- Rainbow and weirdness

2014-08-14 Thread Richard Womer
Yesterday it was mighty damp in New Hampshire--enough rain to raise
the level of the lake about 4 inches (10cm). The evening reward was a
spectacular double rainbow. I did my best to shoot it, but had only
grabbed my camera with the 16-45, and had left behind my bag with the
10-17 in it; so I couldn't get the whole thing in one shot.

Now, the question: the sky is much darker outside the rainbow than
inside it, but that wasn't apparent to the naked eye. Also, the
diagonal dark streaks weren't apparent. Can anyone explain these
artifacts?

Re: Opteka Extension Tubes for Pentax Q

2014-08-14 Thread Mark C
Working distance for the normal prime even with the shortest tube is
pretty tight, and the magnification is pretty high. I have the "toy"
telephoto but that's not a patch on the tele zoom - I might try it for
fun but I doubt it would be very good. I think think the tele zoom will
be quite excellent with the shorter tubes, though.

Build quality seems to be good.

The only issue I note is that 10, 16 and 21mm tubes are quite long for the
focal lengths and small sensor size. With the 10mm tube the 8.5mm is already
over 1:1 lifesized. Given the sensor size, lifesized = a subject frame with
a 6-7mm diagonal.

The shorter tubes seem to work very well on the 15-45 f2.8 tele zoom and it
retains usable AF as well. Some quick grab shots of a dime using the 10mm
and 16mm tube and that lens. These are uncropped frames and as close as I
could get to maximum magnification. Working room was about 8 inches from the
front of the lens for the first shot and about 5 inches for the 2nd. Flash
was done using a DIY diffuser on the built in flash (the design that Tione
shared some time ago.)

I hope to run this setup through its paces in the next week or so.

I also picked up a Case Logic DCB 304 for the Q kit for about $10. Finally
the right size bag - comfortably holds the Q, batteries, cards, 4 lenses,
tubes and other bits and bobs - just big enough but still dang small...

Re: onOne Perfect Effects 8 Premium Edition (for free)

2014-08-14 Thread Stanley Halpin
Note that Perfect Effects is one of 8 modules that make up Perfect Photo Suite.
IIRC, their Perfect Resize module is based on the old Fractals (?) tool. The
modules can be used stand-alone so if you want the Effects module, this is a
good deal! The whole suite doesn’t cost very much. Check their website for
tutorials and “demonstrations” on using the software - I think it could be
quite useful if one took the time to learn to use the tools. Once you have the
Effects module, you’ll be getting periodic batches of new effects to add to
your library. As well as periodic offers to buy the rest of the suite.

years ago), and I was satisfied with them.
They also have competetive pricing for the metallic prints:
http://www.mpix.com/products/pricing/
20x30: $33.99
They don't have 24"x36" listed for metallic, - they might or might not
offer it.

Their shipping charges were very reasonable, but I don't remember what
those were at the moment.

Mpix offers a proofing profile for their paper [at least for the
metallic one (I've used one for Photoshop)].
On one occasion I spoke with their customer service on the phone and
the guy sounded very reasonable.

I'm tempted to give them at try, but on the other hand "if it sounds

AdoramaPix, which I've used in the past, has these prices for Metallic
Prints (followed by Nations Photo Lab, in parenthesis):
20x30...$135 ($29)
24x36...$190 ($38)

Nations will also do 30x30 for $38 and 30x40 for $55.
Haven't gotten far enough to see how their shipping costs compare.

But for those prices, a guy has to give them a try, eh?

A rather belated reply, Don. Fascinating scenes, well caught, even if
somewhat clandestinely. I don't know much about the Amish except that they
lead strict, insular lives in the old way. The closed in buggies are kept in
amazingly good condition. The car park scene with the buggies & cars is a
kind of interface between two worlds.

In SA, there is a rural area in the Northern Cape on the Orange River called
Orania where a few hundred Afrikaners live in the same sort of way, just as
they did before the Anglo-Boer War. At one stage they even hoped to become
an independent state.

I also endorse Skitch which I have been using for years. Incredibly
handy and easy to use. (I don't use Evernote, just Skitch by itself.)

It's one of the very few examples of single-purpose software that has

Aloes & Impala Lily

2014-08-14 Thread Alan C
My common aloes have done quite well this year. Not a spectacular variety
but quite colourful when massed. A small Impala Lily plant in there too.

A Phalaborwa resident trying to save his wall from an ever expanding Baobab

Re: PESO: Forest colours

2014-08-14 Thread Attila Boros
Thanks, Darren. I've cropped out the sky completely as it was almost
featureless and uninteresting, and included the dam which was
previously cropped out, turning this into a wide format image.
Increased contrast and vibrance to bring out the subtle differences in
colour between the trees. This was the tricky part to get it just
right, too much can make the image look wrong.

Very nice pic. I'm not sure whether the dam adds or detracts.
