Re: Not short primes for me
I second the 12-24. It’s an excellent lens. The DA 16-45/4 is also a very good lens optically, although the build quality leaves something to be desired. But it’s usually available at bargain prices. I used one for quite some time with considerable success before selling it for about $250. You really shouldn't count out the 12-24. Its a well regarded design that dxomark ranks as one of the best performing zooms on pentax. Some have claimed that it is actually sharper than the 15ltd, and across the frame that might be true. My copy was incredibly sharp for a zoom. Plus you get the nice range of 18-35 equivalent, which is actually a really great range and more useful IMO than 10-20. i know its way out of your range, but used copies can be found for 600+ if you look around. Its not exactly fast, but the T stop seems closer to F4 than a lot of my zooms, especially the DA 17-70. At 12mm, you can take some impressively long exposures handheld with SR. Also, don't count out the Samyang 14mm. Its fast and while not a perfect lens, is actually pretty sharp. I think the DA 14mm edges it out though from the tests I've seen. The DA has some gnarly field curvature though. Godrey is right. Wide angle and cheap do not go in the same sentence. Especially when you add the word quality. If you are hell bent on primes only, I'd definitely look at the 15ltd and 21ltd. You'll get the most use out of the 21ltd most likely depending on what you are shooting. Re: Paris through Pentax 67 viewfinder
As badly as I want a 6x7, the thought of buying film and having it developed is a bit discouraging. There's too much dust here to contemplate hanging rolls to dry. If I had more disposable income I would be shooting film a lot more. I'm almost afraid to buy more rolls because it becomes kind of addicting. Re: Not short primes for me
Eric, Good quality wide angle lenses always tend to be pricey. The DA21/3.2 Limited was my go-to wide when I was shooting with Pentax gear, can't recommend it enough, but it is fairly expensive. The other wide I liked a lot was the DA14/2.8. I'd pick up one of the DA kit zooms as a temporary measure while I saved up for the 14, 15, or 21 prime. The kit "normal" zooms all start at around 18 mm or so, which gives you some good options for wide. Re: Not short primes for me
I know you're not adverse to manual focusing so if you're looking for a 24mm on the cheap that's pretty good optically, well actually very good optically you might want to try to find a Vivitar 24mm f2.8. I think the identical lens from Tokina was sold in Vivitar livery in an M42 screw mount, K mount Ka mount and as part of the TX interchangeable mount systems. The TX mount version will be K mount only as the TX lenses were discontinued before the introduction of the A mount by Pentax. Sadly I don't have one of them anymore as I was able to get an SMCP-A 24mm f2.8 and a SMCP version as well, so the Vivitar was really really redundant. A bit more prone to flair that an actual SMC lens but using a lens hood designed for a 35mm focal length would work fine on an APS-C camera. There was also a Vivitar f2.0 24mm made by Kiron, that is M42 or K mount only for Pentax users AFAIK but it's supposed to be a cult classic, which may or may not be reflected in the price, if you can find one. Had to deal with shit like that when I was running the mini-lab. Had a woman come in with one of those disposable cameras. The film had two toddlers in diapers playing in the sprinkler & a wading pool. The inevitable result of toddlers in water-logged diapers happened before she got to the end of the roll. Nothing pornographic, just two kids splashing in a plastic blow up pool where they've lost their diapers in the last three or four frames. As usual submit here: http://pug.komkon.org/submit/ I've modified the submission form slightly - you must include the generated exhibition title in your submission and (optional) you can describe your photo in art-speak - might I suggest the Arty Bollocks Generator?: http://www.artybollocks.com/ Other Submission Guidelines here: http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html The main requirements are: * Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels * Max file size: 300k * Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or lens used is Pentax. * If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line. * Nominal closing date: 30 September. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

If you don't mind a little more size and weight, the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 looks like it might be a good replacement for wide primes in terms of image quality and speed (actually it's faster than any primes I know of in the shorter end of its range). A few weeks ago Dan M. mentioned he liked covered bridges. As I live about 90 miles from the famous Bridges in book & movie and as I was nearby in Des Moines on another matter I slipped over and added to my collection. There are bluenoses everywhere. Naked chile photos are a tradition that goes back to the Victorian era. The extreme politically correct and the the over the top religious of a number of religions will find the naked photos objectionable, and in some jurisdictions prosecutable. The photos of the little girl are not pornographic, but they aren't anything I'd show. They look more like snapshots designed to embarrass her in front of future dates. On 8/24/2014 6:47 PM, Larry Colen wrote: Wyatt Neumann is a photographer and a father. In 2014 he took his two-year-old daughter Stella on a cross-country road trip, photographing their journey along the way. In the middle of the trip, what the Safari Gallery describes as "a hyper puritanical, neo-conservative group" launched a cyber-attack on Neumann's images, specifically those of Stella. Calling the images "perverse," "sick" and "pornographic," members of the group attempted to remove all traces of them from the web. They successfully prompted Facebook and Instagram to shut down his accounts, and they criticized his artist website as well. While Neumann claims he was open to others expressing their opinions about his work, the "forced censorship" went too far. And so on. Re: Now that the list is back can we start complaining about the K-S1
Actually I had to look some of it up. I couldn't remember the exact sequence of events. I'm not the one who's likely to be confused. But I'm been using Pentax since it was Asahi Opt. Co. Ltd., or in the States Honeywell. Funny thing, there was a rumor, maybe true for all I know, that the US Navy was going to adopt Pentax as it's official camera because some functionary somewhere thought that Honeywell actually manufactured the cameras. On 8/25/2014 2:51 AM, Alan C wrote: So what's the problem? You're obviously not confused at all and obviously know the haphazard naming system off by heart. Keeps the mind active. It's guaranteed to add to the confusion. I mean really. Pentax dropped the *ist terminology and brought back the K nomenclature. The first series of K digital slrs were the K-10D Top of the line semi-pro K-100D Middle range. K-110D a K100 without SR. The K100D was improved with power contacts and renamed the K100D Super That still makes sense. K20D replaced the K10D K200D replaced the K100D super K2000 replaced the K110D (New Body design), but just to confuse things a bit it was also sold as the K-M So far except for the unfortunate K-M which if you take the M to be a Roman numeral makes it the K-1000, or try a web search you'll get more hits, well then anyway, on the first KM film camera, it all make sense. Then they start getting cute, the K200D and K2000 are both replaced by the intermediate K-r or K-x (dates of production of both those cameras are the same and seem to be more alike than the K50 and the K30). The K-7 replaces the K20D, the naming convention is now completely broken. The K-5 replaces the K-7 so it looks like a naming convention is back track. The K-r K-x are replaced with the K-30 just to break the naming convention a bit more, though it's just possible to assume the K-30 actually replaces the K20D, assuming the the K-7 didn't actually replace the K20D, thought that' takes a bit of historical revisionism, it's capabilities are sort of K20Dish with two control wheels, though the body style is more like an improved K-r. The K-5II/K-IIs replace the K-5. The K-3 replaces the K5II the K-5IIs becomes the second tier semi-pro camera. Then the K50 replaces the K-30, breaking the convention again, but the K500 is introduced as the entry level DSLR. Now the Line is the K-3, K-5IIs, K-50, K-500. Wow the naming makes sense! That is until you trace how we got here. That's putting aside the K-01 which logically should be, based on the current lineup, a FF 24 or 36mp camera, or the replacement for the K-3, but is instead what appears to be a mirrorless dead end, That also doesn't include that the K-x and K-m duplicate the names of the KX and KM film cameras. Don't even get me started on the MX-1. But now, Pentax decided to break the Naming convention yet again, releasing the K-S1. Based on it's name where would you expect it to fall in the current lineup of DSLRs, (the fact that Pentax actually has a lineup of DSLRs is amazing in and of itself). Based on it's specifications it could slot in below a K-500 replacement, or replace the K-500, but based on it's name? It does however ape the Q-S1 name which seems to be the new top of the line in that series of cameras. This would be enough to confuse any new user, and quite a few who aren't so new but have never been anything but digital photographers. Pentax shoots itself in the foot in a lot of ways, and has done so as long as I can remember, even from the "Good Old Days" of the M series film cameras and the "Great Old Days" when the Spotmatic ruled as the Sports photographers weapon of choice, when a camera being light and handy was more important than FPS because you paid an immense cost in weight to get high fps, which at the time wasn't so very high. What the K-S1 looks like is Pentax's answer to the Canon Rebel SL1, but I didn't think that camera was selling all that well, so while it's an answer, I'm not at all sure how that particular question was phrased. A mini-review of the LowePro AW 400 Flipside + online buying experience
This might be controversial. If you don't like it or are lucky enough to have a local camera store that you like to support rather than buying online, by all means feel free... but I thought I would pass along a good experience I had buying online. I've got a LowePro AW 300 Flipside that I like, but I decided to get a 2nd backpack for more gear. Obviously you can only WEAR one at a time, but I use 'em like luggage to take between home/car/work. So I was looking at the supposedly larger AW 400 Flipside. The Pine Green one goes for $131.73 on B&H. If you check eBay you find them at approximately half that but from China, so I was suspicious. Doing my due diligence I discovered that some might be knockoffs. However I also discovered an eBay seller that had the genuine article. So I'm passing that info along to the PDML congregation. The seller's name is bulessky. His store is here: http://stores.ebay.com/bulessky?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 He offers free shipping, but you must be prepared to wait for the item. I popped for the $7 extra for "ePacket delivery from China". I purchased it on August 13th and it arrived on August 22nd (middle of the U.S.). There is an unpacking video on YouTube that mimics the experience I had getting mine. It is in spanish, but you don't need the audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc_MzMth-dw It doesn't come in a box, but simply wrapped in a layer of tough plastic. Mine arrived in fine shape. Inside was a LowePro printed plastic wrap. The bag had all of the actual LowePro tags and sewn on LowePro tags and patches. It sure looks like the Real Deal when compared to my AW 300 flipside. Now for a mini-review: I was surprised that the bag was not a lot bigger (physically) than the AW 300, on first glance. However. it has a big section that unzips on the FRONT as well as the back. It would be big enough to slip a small laptop (or tablet) in and has compartments for other small items. At the bottom front is another zipper that accesses a separate front pocket. This looks like the perfect place to store my X-Rite ColorChecker Passport, something that is useless if left at home. The very bottom exterior also has a zippered compartment that holds the all-weather cover. You can wrap your pack to protect it further from the elements (rain and sand). Inside, there are movable padded dividers that would let you store 8 lenses vertically, in addition to a DSLR body with long lens attached. At the bottom is plenty of room, side-to-side for flash or other accessories. In addition to all the room in the bag, there are straps and places to hook on other items outside the bag if you like, such as tripod/monopod. There are open/elastic topped side pockets on both sides with more storage. The AW 400 also has big padded "hip wings" on the straps that you can put around your midsection. My AW 300 did not have this. This helps bear the weight and allow you to slip out of the backpack and grab items without sitting it on the (wet/muddy) ground. This is why they call it a Flipside. The main equipment compartment is not exposed to the public, but against your back, which makes riding public transportation with your equipment a lot safer. I'm super pleased with the bag and especially with the deal: I spent a whopping $63.70 with the ePackets shipping. Hopefully someone finds this useful. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

But it’s not that much shorter and I wonder if I’d notice the difference in the quality of images I got with it. The three lenses you have listed are quite rare indeed. By the time the A series lenses had hit the market, Pentax's market was primarily casual amateurs who were buying zoom lenses, and the 15, 20 and 24 just didn't sell in great numbers. The A15/3.5 is also rather a horse (I have one that is in absolutely cherry condition). If you want something that wide, you would be better to get the 15/4 Limited, or buy a Fuji and pick up their 14/2.8. bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

As photographers, we need to be aware of other people pushing their agendas on other people. A few months ago, someone got upset at one of my pictures that she described as pornographic. It was a fully clothed woman, holding her boyfriend from behind, with her hands on his bare chest. Good art has always provoked a rather visceral reaction in the viewer. Judging from the reaction of some of the people who hunted him down just to bitch about his pictures, his work must be right up there with some of the best art ever created.
