Re: Looking for feedback on a PESO

2017-07-10 Thread Ken Waller

Makes a very nice abstract as posted.

The draw for me is the progression of the foreground rocks leading you into
the image, across the top and then exiting in the URH corner with the wet
sand pools adjacent to the foreground rocks nicely filling the frame.

Well done.

You're right - I pulled a shot into Pentax's Digital Camera Utility and

with this lens also do not show any lens data. I tried a couple other EXIF

There are images on flickr that show this lens in the EXIF data (e.g. Larry's

Edward S. Curtis Exhibit

2017-07-10 Thread Mark C
I went to Muskegon Michigan today to see an exhibit of Edwin S Curtis's
North American Indian prints. It was an excellent and massive exhibit,
well worth a visit. I doubt that many PDMLer's are nearby, but in case
anyone is passing that way...

All 723 of Curtis' prints were on display - the full set. The museum
believes this is the first time the entire set has been displayed. I
wondered how a fairly small museum got this exhibit and where it would
go next. As it turns out the Muskegon public library was one of the 200+
subscribers to the original project and received the books and
photogravure prints as they were published. A docent told me that at
this time there were no plans to travel the show.

My only complaint - 723 prints plus supplemental displays is a bit
overwhelming - I plan another visit or two over the summer.

Here are a few cell phone snaps of some of the exhibits:

Re: EXIF Mystery

2017-07-10 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Igor. The contacts on the lens look fine. Since this problem
only happens with this lens and appears on multiple bodies, it clearly
is the lens that is at issue. Since flicker shows a lot of exif info I
compared what it shows for shots with my lens verses Larry's copy of the
same lens. His data shows lens name and lens model, data which is
missing from images I've taken. His also shows subject to lens distance,
which also is missing from mine. The only piece of lens specific data I
could find in my images was the Lens ID code, which appears to be
correct (at least the same as others.)

I also uploaded a JPG to flickr - it showed no lens data as well, not
even the lens id code.

I still have the very first image I took with this lens and it is the
same - no lens data.

Looks like its time for a warranty repair. At least I have the Tamron
28-75 as a fall back.

Igor PDML-StR wrote:

Hi Mark,

Here are my thoughts (but you might have already had all of them
yourself..)
Your photoshop could have a problem if it's RAW module version is
older than the lens. But since Flickr doesn't show that name either,
I'd assume it is not there.
(A slim chance if that PS strips it out ... So, a good test would be
to take one shot in JPEG, and upload it as is, without opening in PS,
LR, or whatever.)

So, the culprit is likely to be in the lens hardware.
AFAIK, the lens ID is encoded by an electric contact on the lens.
Unfortunately, upon a quick search, I was unable to find which of the
contacts resonsible for it.

You can just check that contact (or all of them). If it has some
grease or goo on it, that might prevent it from working.
I would try using a q-tip lightly soaked (not dripping) in isopropanol
or methanol or ethanol (I am usually using "rubbing alcohol" - that's
70% or so isopropanol - it is also good for removing pencil marks from
the wall paint if used carefully -- it can also remove the paint).

One more thought: I've never worked on those contacts, but I've
successfully used pencil erasers on the hot-shoe contacts. with the
lens, however, I'd be concerned not to get any rubber crumbles onto
the back elements and ultimately inside camera/on the sensor.

Good luck!

Igor

There are images on flickr that show this lens in the EXIF data (e.g.
Larry's photostream)... It appears that my specific copy though is not
producing EXIF info. I'm wondering if this is something to be
concerned about WRT my copy of this lens? Aside form this, it has been

Any thoughts?

Re: EXIF Mystery

2017-07-10 Thread Matthew Hunt
In the Pentax system, the lens doesn't report a readable name to the
camera, but reports a couple of unique numbers that are recorded in the
EXIF. Your software then has to be updated to map those numbers to the
user-readable name of the lens. According to this page:
https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html#Pentax
support for the 28-105 was added in Camera Raw 9.6. Do you have at least
that version?

Actually, I'll answer my own question... I used Jeffrey's EXIF viewer:
http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi
on your (lovely) recent photo:
http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/media/blogs/calarti/2017/17-07-09/mccp8125_tu2.jpg?mtime=1499635572
and the EXIF dump says you're using Camera Raw 9.1.1, so that's why it
can't decode the lens code.

If you look at Jeffrey's EXIF dump, near the top, you'll see "Lens: 8 61".
Those are the two numbers that identify the lens. So Jeffrey's library
(exiftool or something?) doesn't properly decode it either, but the field
is being populated by the lens and camera--it doesn't look like a
malfunction to me.

Damn - forgot to hit Reply List...hope this gets it back on track.

I think it was better with the water included. It needs the wider view
to emphasize the line of the rocks leading to the water and loses
something with just the rocks and sand.

anything off the sides.

Thanks Paul. After Rick's post I slightly tweaked a copy to trim the
little bit of water (actually a creek, not the ocean) out of the top:

My only suggestion would be to trim a bit off the top; the thin strip

Thank you very much. I struggled a lot with where to crop the top of
that one, because when I trimmed the top like that, particularly if I
kept the 3:2 aspect ratio, I lost a bit more of something else.

Re: EXIF Mystery

2017-07-10 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi Mark,

Here are my thoughts (but you might have already had all of them
yourself..)
Your photoshop could have a problem if it's RAW module version is older
than the lens. But since Flickr doesn't show that name either, I'd assume
it is not there.
(A slim chance if that PS strips it out ... So, a good test would be to
take one shot in JPEG, and upload it as is, without opening in PS, LR, or
whatever.)

So, the culprit is likely to be in the lens hardware.
AFAIK, the lens ID is encoded by an electric contact on the lens.
Unfortunately, upon a quick search, I was unable to find which of the
contacts resonsible for it.

You can just check that contact (or all of them). If it has some grease or
goo on it, that might prevent it from working.
I would try using a q-tip lightly soaked (not dripping) in isopropanol or
methanol or ethanol (I am usually using "rubbing alcohol" - that's 70% or
so isopropanol - it is also good for removing pencil marks from the wall
paint if used carefully -- it can also remove the paint).

One more thought: I've never worked on those contacts, but I've
successfully used pencil erasers on the hot-shoe contacts. with the lens,
however, I'd be concerned not to get any rubber crumbles onto the back
elements and ultimately inside camera/on the sensor.

Good luck!

Igor

flickr with this lens also do not show any lens data. I tried a couple
other EXIF viewers with the same result. Both cameras correctly record
lens data for other lenses.

There are images on flickr that show this lens in the EXIF data (e.g.
Larry's photostream)... It appears that my specific copy though is not
producing EXIF info. I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned
about WRT my copy of this lens? Aside form this, it has been operating

Subject: EXIF Mystery

I just noticed that my DFA 28-105 f3.5-5.6 does not show up in EXIF
data. I've tried it on the K1 and the K3 and in both cases when I view
file info in Photoshop the lens field in blank. I noticed this because
uploads to flickr with this lens also do not show any lens data. I tried
a couple other EXIF viewers with the same result. Both cameras correctly
record lens data for other lenses.

There are images on flickr that show this lens in the EXIF data (e.g.
Larry's photostream)... It appears that my specific copy though is not
producing EXIF info. I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned
about WRT my copy of this lens? Aside form this, it has been operating
perfectly.

Any thoughts?

Mark

Larry, that's beautiful. The curving line on rocks and the quiet beach
are very tranquil;, the pools with the blue reflections are very
intriguing.

My only suggestion would be to trim a bit off the top; the thin strip
of ocean is distracting.

Cheers,

Rick

Small but perfectly formed.

I particularly like Rick's and Dan's offerings.

It's a pleasant scene with interesting detail and an excellent composition.

There is a sense of tranquility.

It resembles a zen garden to some extent.

PESO LBB

2017-07-10 Thread Larry Colen
I saw some little brown birds with mud nests in a gazebo near the Oregon
coast:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/35700256991/in/album-7215768336043/

If anyone wants to have a go at IDing them more precisely than LBB, the
whole set is here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/7215768336043

It's cool the way the babies have the yellow on the inside of their beaks
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/34992522174/in/album-7215768336043/

They were shot with the bigma on the K-3. I don't know why all the shots
were so hazy, yes it was shady, but I wasn't shooting into the sun or
anything.

Looking for feedback on a PESO

2017-07-10 Thread Larry Colen
A lot of the time when I post a photo, I know why I like it. This is
one that I don't have a good understanding of its strengths and
weaknesses, which is why I didn't post it earlier. However a friend
just commented positively about it on flickr, so I thought I'd give it a
try. I cropped a lot out of the original frame, so there's a lot of
latitude in re-composition.
