The windmills on the left are more or less an accident but it makes the
shot for me.
Its indeed very quiet everywhere and much much cleaner air. Bird watching
and bird listening in the garden is now a popular time killer for many
people (with a garden). Beautiful but all for the wrong reason, fingers
crossed maybe the good reasons can be found if all this is over.

Re: OT: First footsteps in BOOWU-M

2020-04-20 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks again. After your reply yesterday I retried the colour negs but this
time used the WB dropper on what I knew to be white - the whitest part of the
window frame in neg #28. I then inverted the curves, and this is pretty much
what came out, which is not bad at all for current purposes - top row:

https://lightroom.adobe.com/shares/4b4aeebf424b4d5aaeeadd495b883953/albums/de5820d8befe4c0a928b9af08a18ae93/assets/e00c74794c6b491f928695c2991280d1/metadata

I’ll try using the film rebate too. When it’s not obvious from the negatives
where the best white it becomes a bit haphazard. I have ordered a roll of Ektar
100 and will shoot a series of bracketed shots, with notes, of my white balance
card and, when I find it, my Q-60 target. If I include these negs with a set
then I will always know where there is a standard white, even though it will be
different film stock, and hopefully it will be close enough for my purposes,
which is to get a good enough positive for me to evaluate.

When the time comes to scan individual negatives for high quality output I will
try and learn how to do this properly. It may be that I can never do it -
certainly not by eye as I’m colourblnd - in which case the neg will have to go
to a lab.

Great photo and a whole story in a single frame.

The Belgian region of Basse Meuse has alreay cancelled all Cramignons

marriageable age, dancing all across the village, very popular events

PESO: Deflated

2020-04-20 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Our townships is very spread out, and except for three small historic
villages, homes are generally on 1/2 acre to 5 acre lots. Children who are
friends in school and in sports and other activities may not know where
their friends live. When one of the children has a birthday party, the
parents tie several balloons to the mail box to help other parents find the
house.

One of the children in the house across the street from our had a birthday,
and their parents put balloons on the mail box, even though, because of the
COVID-19 restrictions, no birthday party with other children is possible.
The balloons deflated quickly, an apt symbol of the way the chid's dreams
of a party with all of his/her friends were deflated.
So many children are missing out on so much this year. So sad.

Re: OT: First footsteps in BOOWU-M

2020-04-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Glad to help out!

Removal of the crossover mask is probably the most vexing part of working with
color negative processing because it varies by the type of film, the particular
way a film was processed, and the age of the film as well. I remember from
working in the photofinishing lab … it was no better then, a skilled print
machine operator simply looked at the film and knew how much to tweak the
reference settings based on the experience of having down a few thousand
frames.

In this album on flickr - https://www.flickr.com/gp/gdgphoto/QJ437u - I show a
simplistic capture setup with a random B negative and then another capture of
a random color negative. I used the White Balance dropper on the film rebate
between frames to neutralize the crossover mask and then tweaked it further in
the finish rendered image. This particular film had a relatively light
crossover mask; other films have much deeper hue'ed crossover masks.

I don't know that a reference gray/color target is going to give much better
information than just using the rebate of the film unless it was made at the
same time as the original images on that same film. It's always just a rough
starting point for my image processing. There's as much feel and art to this as
there is science IMO, because we all tend to perceive color slightly
differently and what is too cool for one person is often just right for
another. Unless you're working with specific colormetric type materials and
needs… forensic and science data, for instance.

For that example photo, I found that the crossover mask removal was reasonable
and technically about right, but that the resultant image felt a little dull
and cool, so I then warmed it up with a shift in the color temperature and hue
controls, poked at the contrast a touch.

Re: Mysterious Adobe file

2020-04-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The final ever perpetual license version of Lightroom was v6.14 (reference:
https://www.dpreview.com/news/5525938279/adobe-has-released-the-final-standalone-version-of-lightroom
 ).

Any version later than that is some variant of subscription Lightroom, when all
the version numbers became confusing being due to both the variant and what
instance the updater had installed on your particular system. (My current
installation of Lightroom Classic says it is 9.2.1 [202004070813-7699d98a] in
the Finder "Get Info" panel. Inside the running app, in its About dialog box,
LR reports that it contains Camera Raw 12.2.1 and the Release and Build data
matches what the Finder reports.)

"Adobepatchinstaller" and "payloads" sound like the usually invisible files
that the Adobe updater/software manager/creative cloud uses to do updates. If
you're running Lightroom v6.1, it was probably downloaded in error by whatever
Adobe software manager is installed and active on your system. I saw this
happen a couple of times when I was running versions of perpetual license LR
6.x prior to installing v6.14. Then all such activity ceased.

I doubt there's anything to worry about, other than the fact that LR 6.1 is way
out of date and is incompatible with later macOS, cameras, and other stuff. If
it's working fine for your purposes, so far, just delete the folder and keep
going. It's the kind of thing that can happen when you're running older, now
obsolete, software revisions that talk back to their issuing server
occasionally and it runs into commands that it was not designed to work with.

I see very few problems now, other than the nagware aspect of the Creative
Cloud software manager always notifying me that something needs attention, even
when I've made the setting to turn off ALL notifications. I mostly just ignore
it. :D

It might be from Adobe. Those are the names Adobe uses for its CC updates. I

Re: Mysterious Adobe file

2020-04-20 Thread Bob Pdml
Have you googled it? There are sites which tell you what mysterious files are.
They are legitimate file names- you could verify by comparing sizes with the
official versions.

I googled briefly when your email appeared, and it looks like the software
adobe uses for installing auto updates, with details of the installation in the
payload folder. If your installation of LR is set to check periodically for
updates (without necessarily auto-updating) then it may have downloaded them as
part of the check.

I would have thought it would do no harm to rename them, then run LR check for
updates and see what happens. If you want to install any updates then you can
do it with LR. I believe they are still issuing bug fixes for your version.
