SV: Timelapse Tour of Europe

2014-07-29 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne
Timelapse is an excellent way to show events that unfold too slowly for
humans to stay concentrated on the event. On a philosophical level there's a
deep meaning in observing a flower unfold as the sun rises, a mould
spreading on a petri dish, or the seasons shift. It certainly grounds you to
nature in a very specific way. But then you'd also have to ask yourself if
life really is long enough for that sort of thing.

As a genre, timelapse has been around for more than a generation already. As
with all other image-making, digital has made it available to a much, much
larger group of practicioners.

It is a nice set of photos, thanks for posting the link, Dan.
I was thinking about it at a philosophical level:
time-lape photos as a new genre.
There is a recent (~20 years?) trend when we don't have time
(and desire) to focus on watching anything for longer than a few seconds.
So, this type of video is an alternative way of showing that.
Does it look cool because of this or it is just cool?
So, is it a trend du jour, or a genre that was enabled by technology
and will last?

I wonder what fellow PDMLers think about it.

Cool. There is a similar one in Sweden, near Töcksfors, just across the

Emne: Today morning, just recently

Hello.

Below is the statement of the fact. It is not my intent to convey any
emotional sub-text whatsoever. Times are approximate, except the very
first one.

* 5:50 - my alarm clock rings; I swipe it to silence. I decide to linger
in bed a bit longer.
* 6:00 - Julia wakes up and starts her morning routine
* 6:10 - we hear rocket alarm, I jump out of bed. Julia grabs the kids
and heads to the stairway of our house. According to rear command, we
have 90 seconds to get to safety. This gives me time to pull on my
yesterday's t-shirt and trousers. We climb down two stories, it seems
that everyone in our building (4 story, 40 years old) agree that the
area between the first and second floor is the safest. First floor is
one immediately above the ground floor. We're alone as no one is awake
at this time of day.
* 6:15 - we hear some booms. It is interceptor rockets handy work. Anat
is counting.
* 6:20 - I suggest we return. Girls start to stand up as they were
sitting on the floor. We hear another rocket alarm. The girls return to
sitting on the floor.
* 6:25 - We hear some more booms. Anat keeps her count. The doors around
us start to open as our neighbors drag themselves out of bed. Few
minutes later we return home to start our day.

Now comes the emotional part. It's been about a week since this has
started. Only one list member, blessed be his name, has written to me
off the list. Frankly, your silence is deafening...

Carry on.

Re: OT - A guide to reading abstract art

2014-06-16 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Thanks for the link, Bruce. :-)

What I miss from such explanations is the importance of culture as a
backdrop to understand art. This one take a step i that direction when
mentioning that one might start to understand the visual language of the
particular artist after seeing twenty or so works.

My favourite personal example of cultural (or historical) knowledge is
Guernica by Picasso. I saw that image first time as a teenager, before I'd
heard anything of the Spanish Civil War. It didn't make much sense until I
looked up the title in an encyclopedia.

For figurative art I suspect icons are wasted on the agnostic for the same
reason. :-)

SV: Lenovo Computers

2014-02-15 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Well yeah, *that* sucks. :-(

support for Lenovo in Norway is served by a contracted independent vendor.
I've read experiences with them as being very choosy about the kind of
failures they're willing to provide service for. Sifting out the clear-cut
warranty issues where they can pass the bill on to Lenovo, no doubt.

Liked the term PassingthoughtPad. :-)

the local warranty center who didn't just drop the ball, he ignored that
there was a ball.

Re: Lenovo Computers

2014-02-14 Thread AlunFoto - Jostein Øksne
Sorry to hear your experience, Bill.

My previous workplace used Lenovos. All business model ThinkPads, in various
sizes and over many processor generations. The total inhouse stock of them was
about 40-50 machines at any time. They were extremely durable and reliable. I
had three of them myself over the years. Never broke down, just got outdated on
processing power. I also bought two ThinkPads for my sons, and the experience
there has been the same; both machines have endured the abuse of gaming
teenagers.
So naturally I'm a little surprised by the categoric dismissal of all things
Lenovo, but maybe it's a different story for their non-ThinkPad models.

A year ago, I bought my wife a Lenovo laptop. Apparently these
machines aren't the best there is, but this was for very light home
use, my wife does nothing with a home computer beyond a bit of web
surfing. She doesn't even have a home email address. Anyway, she told
me a month ago that the keyboard was faulty, and several keys didn't
work. Apparently, the Lenovo warranty is one year, and the machine
was off warranty by manufacture date. Eventually, I was able to get
Lenovo to extend the warranty to the retail sales date, so I took it
in to the shop where a bad keyboard was diagnosed.

The repair depot has now decided that they have no knowledge of the
computer coming in to be looked at, and now the warranty has
 expired.

Note to self, do not EVER buy another Lenovo computer.

Friends don't let friends buy Lenovo.

It's an excellent collection of photos by the way. I suspect that
1) You could just print them up and have a show ready to go.

2) You could use the book to advertise photo trips to California and
the SouthWest states. How many people signing up would it take to
finance you for a trip? Set up several consecutive week long trips
that people could sign up for whichever ones they wanted/could afford.

I suspect that photos of Sunny California (tm) would make for a very
attractive travel brochure in Oslo, sometime around March.

Yes, but that means you could make a pdf version of the book available.

Well you can do that too if you like. There are three kinds of books to

2014-01-07 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Ann put it quite succinctly. :-)

Actually, I think about half the shots in the book are produced around
sunrise or sunset. Another fourty percent are from normal hours, and the
rest are night shots. I totally agree with Ann and the others commenting on
the quality of the light. I certainly prefer the light that happens when the
sun is close to the horizon.

Another factor is that I soon realised that the midday hours were the best
for doing the transport legs. I could be more efficient if arriving at a new
place with a couple of daylight hours left to do reconnoisance, procure
maps, pay entrance fees to parks, etc.

A three weeks roadtrip for an area the size of whole of Scandinavia (at
least), can't be anything but touch-and-go. In my honest opinion that makes
all pictures obtained this way into travelogue shots regardless of the sun's
position in the sky at the time of pressing the button.

To be honest, I mentally regard the whole trip as reconnoisance for further
trips some time in the future. In particular I'd love to go back to the High

A while back, I mentioned that what I really wanted was software that
would take multiple raw files, convert the values into absolute light
levels on each of the three channels (I.e. expand the dynamic range of
the image data by combining different exposure frames) and then stitch
those frames together into a panorama that could then be processed
in lightroom.

Someone mentioned some software that they said would do pretty close
to what I wanted. I saved that email someplace, but don't remember
where off hand. Now that I have an SI buttload of panoramas with each
frame taken at several exposure levels from my recent trip, something
that would combine those frames into a high resolution, expanded dynamic
range file that I could process in lightroom would be very handy.

In LR, when you hold Alt and move the sharpen radius slider,
LR shows essentially the edge of the objects.

Is it possible achieve that effect in the actual image in LR?
If not, - what would be the easiest way to reproduce that in Photoshop?
(I've done something along the way last time a couple of years ago,
but it would take me some time to recall that. But even in that case it
was not quite the same as for what one sees in LR)

I did get a few that didn't suck too badly.

I drove down to LA on Sunday by way of Big Sur, the weather was beautiful,
and

the roads were clogged with tourists. In the future, I think that I'll do
my best to avoid Big Sur on weekends. I managed to spend a few hours at
Limekiln, which was one of my favorite places to go as a kid.

Big Sur:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157639424720424/

We spent our first night in the desert in Mojave. That evening we tried
to

find the site of Nowak's opal mine, were we used to hunt for fire opal
when I was a kid. We spent some time driving dirt roads in Lorry, my
Dodge van. I had fun, Candace didn't really enjoy the off road experience.

I tried to use my astrotracer and the tamron 300/2.8 to get some photos
of Andromeda but failed miserably. I did play a bit with my Korean fisheye
though.

The next morning we had brunch at the Voyager Cafe at the Mojave
spaceport.

That evening we drove as far a Lone Pine, which turned out to be far more
scenic than we expected and we ended up spending an extra day there.

Desert:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157639424755274/

The following day we drove out Death Valley, getting in a little shooting
before sunset. I had fun trying to catch the new moon setting. Didn't
quite get the shot I wanted, but it was still fun. We spent the night in
Beatty Nevada, about 45 minutes out of the park, and surprisingly
picturesque. That night we did some night photography in the ghost town
of Rhyolite. I played a bit with my astrotracer.

Most of Friday was spent at Zabriskie Point, which is ridiculously scenic.
We got there in the mid afternoon. I think that for a lot of the photos,
the lighting would be best in the morning. The walk down to the valley
floor is much easier than it looks, and well worth it, especially in the
canyons to the left of the lookout, looking towards the desert. It's
very easy to get beautiful shots of the gorgeous rock formations, but
a bit more challenging to get shots that aren't monontonously beautiful,
all looking pretty much alike.

I did manage to get a little bit lost on my way back out of the
canyon, and climbing out of canyons, in the dark (albeit with headlamp),
up steep dirt cliffs, when overweight and out of shape was a special
kind of fun.

Death Valley:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157639424829284/

Candice has posted a couple of sets from her trip:
Mojave:

Red Rock Canyon:

Same general rules as last year: Submit up to three shots. One

charge, no obligation to purchase the book. Entries accepted up until
28 February, 2014. All the other rules/details are on the web page.

As before, all profits go to the Pediatric Oncology Global Health

have their own page on the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's web site:

SV: Regarding the assessment of raw image technical qualities (i.e.correct exposure, focus, sharpness, etc.)

2013-12-30 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

I agree with Bob S., you've painted yourself into a corner, Ciprian.

One ballpark indicator of technically acceptable recordings is the
histogram. If it doesn't pile up on the edges, it's basically okay because
there is information in the deepest shadows and/or brightest highlights.
When editing, make sure you don't clip it. Beyond that, play.

As Paul says, your eye is a far better judge of quality than software. And
just like AIs or neural networks, it has to be trained by being presented to
a lot of examples. The analogy probably doesn't hold much further than that,
but you'll do good to indulge yourself. Leisurely.

Emne: Regarding the assessment of raw image technical qualities (i.e.correct
exposure, focus, sharpness, etc.)

   Hello all!

Before describing the problem, please let me stress that I know
very well that the quality of a photograph lies more in its
aesthetic properties than in its technical ones. However in this
thread I don't discuss about photographs, but images, i.e. the raw
data (pixel values) that are totally decoupled with what they
represent. (Thus I hope I won't start a flame-war regarding
aesthetics vs. technical qualities.)

(If you want to skip the context and go directly to the problem,
just go to the section titled `The questions`.)

 == The context ==

So the problem, I always capture images --- note how I didn't
say photographs :) --- in RAW format. And, while working in fully
manual mode, very often I obtain multiple images of the same scene,
where the main variable is the exposure time. Also while in low
light, either interior or at night, I strive to use a low ISO like
200-400 thus with an exposure time of about 1/10 of a second, and
although the SR is enabled, I always use continuous drive (in low
mode) to take about three exposures, in the hope that one of them is
sharper.

The problem? During the editing process, after I select which
scenes are the ones I like the best, I end up with a lot of images
of the same scene (with almost identical composition). And thus my
problem is which of the two or three images is the most suitable
one, in terms of technical properties, to be used as input for
processing (thus obtaining in the end my photograph).

 == The questions ==

Thus my questions are the following:

   (A) Which are the technical qualities I should look for in the image?

   (B) What software tools exist out there that would help in the
assessment of these technical qualities?

 == My answers ==

For (A), the technical qualities, I've identified the following:

   * Is the subject properly focused? I.e. since I use auto-focus,
sometimes with slim subjects it might happen that the camera focuses
on the background.

   * Is the image sharp enough? I.e. not blurry due to shake,
miss-focus (back or front), subject movement, etc.

   * Is the exposure correct / optimal? I.e. especially since I
use ETTR (expose-to-the-right):
 * did I overexposed something, and if so which channels, which
parts of the picture, where are the next shadows relative to the
highlights, etc.;
 * do I have underexposed areas, and like above how much, etc.

Did I miss other technical properties?

   I've purposely dismissed the following:
   * noise -- which by its nature is a property of the sensor and
constant in effect for a given ISO value;
   * depth-of-field -- which manifests itself as a lack of sharpness
for the objects outside the DOF; (although it would be nice to be
able to estimate how far a given pixel is outside the DOF;)
   * flare -- they are easily discerned in the image;
   * bokeh, vignetting, distortion, acutance, etc. -- which are
invariable properties of the lens (for a given aperture and focal
length); (and bokeh is a highly subjective quality;)
   * chromatic aberrations -- like above, although would be nice to
highlight them;

Unfortunately for (B), how to asses these qualities, I have a few
theories (see the next section titled `The science-fiction`) and less
ready-to-use solutions...

First the solutions. Currently I'm using Geeqie (an Linux-based
image manager) to find the scenes I like, and for each scene which are
the obvious failed images, i.e. those with clear over- or
under-exposure or blur, and I end up with a few candidates. However
even if I zoom 100% I don't see the raw image, but the embedded JPEG,
which was already processed by the camera, thus I can't correctly
assess the sharpness nor the exact exposure optimality (due to white
balance).

Thus I then switch to RawTherapee --- which I've configured so
that by default it doesn't apply any settings at all, just neutral or
disabled values --- to look at the raw channels histogram, the exact
image without added sharpening, and the focus mask. However I can't
use the blinkers (i.e. underexposure / overexposure masks)

I think it's authentic.
I've seen somwhere how he makes his images, and it includes a small-sensor
camera; a sort of hacked compact. That gives him more DOF. In addition he
use advanced stacking techniques; to the point I suspect him to be a bored
astrophotographer looking for something to do under the snowing clouds.

Today I have found your photos from us of the 1981 Computerworld tour in

My quest is if I can use some for them for my website like a little

Would be very nice to hear positive from you. Are you still living in

When I had a previous chip failure, I didn't see anything like this.
When the chip failed in your lens, did you see this type of a

But I also appreciate the care and effort he puts into getting those shots.

SV: fanning the flames

2013-12-09 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

I've tried to stay out of this discussion, but alas...

Boris' reasoning has two _big_ flaws. One is accepting that certain
geographical (or virtual in the sense of facebook) areas are exempt from
common sense and law. I can see no reason why anyone would resign to such a
state of affairs.

With regards to facebook's community standards, their community is made up
by their users. If enough ruckus is made by their community over certain
rules, they stand to lose more by not changing their practice.

And that leads me to the other flaw in the comparison. Facebook are not,
like the thieves in Boris' example, criminals.

Dave, let me try to explain.

Dave, consider this scenario. You drive in a neighborhood and in great
hurry you leave your car windows open. Your car gets robbed. You
invoke insurance, and so on. While engaged in damage control you are
let known that this neighborhood is rather full of thieves. A week
later you have to pass by the same route again. This time, rather
knowingly and on purpose you leave your car doors opened one more time
and your car gets promptly robbed. This time however, along with
invoking the insurance, you also start a very loud publicity campaign.

Now, consider this:

1. Although you were quite right both times (as far theft being out of
the law, etc), you were not very smart to leave your car doors opened.
The first time over you were being normal human - you were in a hurry
and you were preoccupied with something important.

2. The second time you did it on purpose. Further, this time you were
knowingly inviting the thief so that you can cry out loud. Again - you
were right by the letter of the law, but you were very non-smart other
than that. Ultimately, I should point out that in this case your
behavior may indicate a deeper underlying problem than just being
robbed.

3. Finally, if your original plan was a publicity campaign against
thieves in general or in this very neighborhood, don't tell me that
the damage done to your car is something you cannot possibly stand. In
other words - don't be childish.

Now, my understanding (from reading the blog post comments) that this
is not the very first time this lady has problem with FB authorities.
Ultimate bottom line here is Hebrew saying Be wise, don't be right.

I hope I got my point across. Also let it be noted that this direction
of the discussion has nothing to do with whatever was depicted in

I don't understand how it come to be that you inferred from my
reasoning that common sense and law don't apply somewhere, say on FB?
I would appreciate an explanation, even if off-list.

Then, I did not mean to imply that FB were criminals. I meant to
illustrate the point that this specific lady struck me as a very
special kind of individual - one that is more preoccupied with
righteousness than with anything else. I may be wrong, but at least I
tried to clarify my view.

I think that FB is too big a community to have it change their
practices based on experience of a single individual. It is in fact a
very interesting issue, because FB is not democratic by design. The
rules are not produced by mutual discussion of FB members, but rather
are given. But I sense this will lead us even further off the original
topic.

Cheers!

Those Great American Lakes must be the best place in the world for
lighthouse images. I so envy you the shots you make of them, Mark.

Good timing on the splash. And that old one with the ice just underlines my
point. Most lighthouses serve areas with salt water that rarely freeze up
like that. Way cool, in more ways than one.

Jostein, I imagine you're somewhere near Heceta Lighthouse. It's north of
Florence, OR, very near the Seal Caves. Heceta is the best positioned
lighthouse I happen to have ever seen. Last year at about this same Dec
date, I made the trip up there, from the Sacramento, CA area, to attempt a
sunset shoot. Weather was grey and misty. After a couple days, we (wife and
I) gave it up. Wish I had the gumption to head up there again today.
I would guess, you can position yourself so that the sun sets just to the
left of the light as you view it from a pull-off viewing area immediately
south of small bay.

My ratio of successful attempts at focus stacking is below one in ten.
Mostly because I fail to produce evenly spaced focus shifts between each

Fw: PESO - Virgin River Canyon, AZ

2013-11-30 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Observed on my way South from Zion.
Mostly a transport leg, but I found this “little” canyon quite captivating.
It’s a place I’d love to return to.

Very nice photo.

Didn't quite get the text tho'. You mean that game where they run around

I'm very glad I bothered to drive up to Dante's Viewpoint. If any of you go
to Death Valley in the future, make sure you get up there too. It's a
perfect spot for watching the sunset, if nothing else; but the's a lot of
great motifs up there too. I met a couple of guys from Las Vegas who had
come up specifically to shoot the sunset from there. Nice blokes. The
leaving shot features the lights from their car. I explained what I had in
mind, and they promised to drive slowly and evenly to make the light trail
steady.

I really like Kolob Canyons, good mistake:) Moonlight on Hidden Canyon
is also very nice. The tree in the lower right seems to be brighter
than the rest, maybe from car lights?

Umm... Actually that was caused by accidentally turning my headlamp on for a
few seconds during exposure.

I went back to the website and changed some settings; the images should
expand a bit larger on your screen, and I also turned on the down-load
option.
If anybody wants the original 10 DNG files to play with on their own, I can
put the files in Dropbox...

I asked a ranger what kind of minerals we were looking at, and told him I
suspected the tuquoise to contain a lot of copper. He could not confirm but
told me the purple stuff was manganese. According to Wikipedia, the green
stuff is mica, but that's a family of minerals that can have a lot of
different metallic contaminants.
