2013-03-09 Thread Feroze

Hi all

Some Pentax gear for sale. Everything is currently in Winnipeg, Manitoba
if that makes a difference. Make me a fair offer off list before I put
it up on ebay, but I rather it went to a good home to a list member :)

Pentax MZs's with battery grips (x2)
Pentax 28-105mm F3.2-F4.5
Pentax 5p Sync Cord
Pentax Hot Shoe Adapter F
Pentax Hot Shoe Adapter FG
Pentax Grid Screen GG-60
Pentax Scale Focusing Screen
Pentax 49mm Gel Holder
Pentax F f2.8 100mm MAcro
Pentax F 28mm f2.8
Pentax F 50mm f1.7
Pentax hot shoe Grip
Pentax AF 400 grip clamp
Pentax autofocus adapter f1.7
Pentax Battery Grip D-BG2
Pentax Magnifying Eyepiece Fb
Pentax Screen GG60
Kenko 49mm close up filters
Vivitar Macro Flash Ring

I have pics of everything. So I'm keeping my K10d, flash and 1 lens, but
have moved over to Canon. My heart will always be @ Pentax but I'm
finding it hard to continue buying into Pentax after buying a Canon 5d
and 70-200 F4 L

Re: OT: Computer Question

2009-10-05 Thread Feroze
When my PC is doing stupid things I generally run crap cleaner,
www.ccleaner.com...

Try this for the system restore http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

Joseph Tainter wrote:
Sorry for the OT question, but the knowledge on this list is
incredible. I hope someone can help me.

I have a Dell laptop running XP. On Wednesday I installed a new, 19,
1280x1024 external Viewsonic monitor. At the same time I installed a
little utility called Desktop Restore, which restores the position of
your icons if they get rearranged. All seemed well until
today--everything seemed to be working fine.

Today I was using Firefox to search for a hotel in Stockholm. Suddenly
Zone Alarm popped up a window saying something was trying to access
the internet. I clicked on Deny, but Zone Alarm wouldn'd respond and
I couldn't get the message off my screen. So I rebooted the computer.
That's when the problems started. Here they are:

1. My 1280 x 1024 monitor will only show in 1024 by 768. I cannot get
it to switch to the correct resolution and stick.

2. Now the monitor on the laptop also comes up in 1024 x 768 when I
boot up. This monitor I can get to the correct resolution (1280 x 800)
by manually setting it in Properties. But I shouldn't have to do that.

3. Suddenly System Restore no longer works. I cannot go back to a
previous restore point.

4. So I ran AVG Antivirus 8.5, after first updating it. I had it scan
the entire drive. It could not find any viruses.

Can anyone think of what may be going on? What should I try?

Thanks,

Joe

Anti Photo Laser

...Ambramovich has installed an anti-paparazzi “shield”. Lasers sweep
the surroundings and when they detect a CCD, they fire a bolt of light
right at the camera to obliterate any photograph

Wouldn't the mirror bounce the laser back???

holographic diffraction grating is a good search term for anti-laser

Of course, if it's detecting digital camera sensors, one could

The watermark may finish me off. I thought having a floating watermark
might be okay, only it sits in that one spot on the page. I may have
to just nuke that and put it on the image files themselves.

Anyway, I've lost in the order of 20-30kg. This shot illustrates just
how successful I've been:

Still got a long way to go until I get where I want to be, but the

Carry on.

But even the imposing presence of an adult leopard at feeding time is not
enough to get between plucky young Rattus Norvegicus (better known as

This extraordinary series of images were captured by photography student
Casey Gutteridge, as he trained his camera on the leopard for a course

Re: OT: Wedding Photography Website

2008-12-03 Thread Feroze
I don't know how copyright works over on that side of the pond, but here
in SA the copyright to the photo still belongs to the photographer
unless the contract states otherwise. I'm a full time graphic designer
and have had people pitch up for an interview with work that I've
designed in their portfolio, people tend to pull off good shots from
other sites to use as there's and some of the shots I saw looked pretty
good, tempting to someone trying to boost their own portfolio. Templates
are fine if your just starting to learn css which is pretty powerful if
used correctly, but remember that the templates are available to many
others as well.

It would be easier for me to show you lightbox in use here:
www.fahmphotography.com/tlc1.htm

PN Stenquist wrote:

I'm technically ignorant when it comes to the web. I used iWeb to
build the site using templates. What is lightbox?

Wedding Photography Website

2008-12-03 Thread Feroze
CSS=cascading style sheets, think of your web page as those Babushka
dolls, each layer wrapped around the next layer, css its a way to
separate content and markup, so if you wanted to change the colour or
appearance of the site you'd only change the style sheet and the changes
would happen through the site, you could makeover a 10 000 page website
by editing one style sheet

Yours is here:
http://web.me.com/pnstenquist/wedding_photography/Photos_files/Photos.css

basic : http://htmlhelp.com/reference/css/

If you willing to read a bit you could learn everything you need to
create a site here: http://www.w3schools.com/css/

I seldom do weddings anymore, I can earn more money in less time without
any grief by design a brochure or a websiteits a crappy way to earn
a living, probally only that much worse than baby pics
And I don't have to keep explaining that its not my lens that makes her
look fat anymore...

When you shot weddings on film did you normally give them the negs as well?

PN Stenquist wrote: Thanks again. What does css mean?

My contracts state that all photos become the property of the bride and
groom, but I retain the right to use them in my portfolio and for
advertising. A lot of the local wedding photographers work that way.
It's less messy. You charge an initial package price, then turn over
responsibility to the couple. Sometimes they still come back for
additional prints, but it's the upfront charges that make it all
profitable.

Dreamweaver is hardly the best software for creating websites, it tends
to bloat the html code with garbage, larger page sizes makes for
inefficient page loads. You can edit your site with any html editor,
even notepad. The most used style now to XHTML, css, js and for the
future wml (wireless). Download the trial version of MS Expressions, I
know its a MS product but it actually works, and if you can use MS word
you can use expressions.

You can hit me up anytime if you need some help with coding and stuff

I've been watching this msnbc (I think) and it seems that anyone even
remotely related to the motor industry is having a hard time, they
interviewed the CEO of GM yesterday and he stated that if they fail it
would directly or indirectly affect 3 million people...scary stuff

PN Stenquist wrote:

that was many years ago, and I shot very few of them.

I don't plan on doing many weddings. My main occupation is advertising
copywriting, but work is scarce in Detroit these days, so I hope to do
some weddings and virtual reality panos to fill in the gaps. However,
I'm looking to relocate and take on a new full-rime ad job, so my
wedding photography business may be short lived. But building the
sites is educating me a bit. In the meantime, I'm working on the
Dreamweaver tutorial and hope to advance my web skills. My advertising
website, at http://www.paulnstenquist.com, is sorely in need of
repairs and updates. But the person who created it is no longer
available to fix it. It was built with Dreamweaver, so I'm hoping that
after I get up to speed with that software I can download the site
components and fix it.

Take a look at the page source. Paul's site is making use of at least
3 style sheets. I imagine the slow downloads, which I also

I wasn't refering to to his code in particular, just from experience in
general. Like you say you've been using it for years, you'd know what
the code needs and what needs to be deleted. Paul says his still
learning, dreamweaver is going to be pretty heavy for someone who just
wants to edit his own site.I tend to code by hand, only the minimum to
make a page work, expressions works perfectly for that, and the css
editor is built in, it works like tabs on a excel spreadsheet, I prefer
studio to create scripts though

Actually, the code on Paul's site is pretty light. I've been using
Dreamweaver for years and haven't had too many problems with bloated
code, although I always use it in the split Design/Code view and
mainly use it as a code editor. I find DW much more of a help than a
hindrance, although I'd never use it to generate Javascript, and I
hate its CSS editor.

Re: OT: cleaning the windshield so I can see the Blue Ridge Parkway

2008-11-11 Thread Feroze
This is the only one that I know of that will remove pitting or wiper
damage.

http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2010itemType=PRODUCT

Clay removes surface impurities , it dosn't fill in scratches. No hand
treatment will work from what I've seen unless you willing to spend a
couple months sandpapering your windscreen, you need to get a buffing
machine like the above and sandpaper the scratches out, you not filling
the cracks, you are lowering the level of the surrounding area to the
level of the scratch, if that makes sense

http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18275

3M also makes some highly recommended products but I don't know if they
will sell it retail to you, I usually buy it from a panel beater

Thanks for that. I did manage to find the Maguires stuff on a UK website
yesterday. There seems to be the opinion here that it will (with some effort)
remove the fine scratches one (specifically, a _previous_ owner) can generate
by using the wipers dry. Any idea if this is true, or does anyone know of any
other treatment?

This actually comes from my getting out with my camera, and that's a
Pentax, so it's not completely out of line I hope.

For the inside, a crumpled sheet of newspaper slightly dampened with vinegar.
Plus some elbow grease

Clean, dry newspaper to finish.

For the outside, there is a process called claying. I have seen this
mentioned on various (UK) car forums but have been unable to unearth any information
other than the name.

Re: OT Used laptops for vehicle use

I don't know how practical hauling a notebook around would be, but I
just upgraded to the Nokia 6110 Navigator, uses the route66 software but
you can load any 3rd party software you want, you only pay for the phone
calls as the software uses the phones built in GPS, mine came with maps
for the whole of South Africa but you can purchase maps for any country.
You can do the route planning on the phone, with options of shortest or
best route, or manually plan the route, has voice prompts so you don't
even have to look at the screen. Only problems I've had are that the
battery dosn't last long, have to charge it every 3 days and the calls
aren't as clear as sony erricsson phones. YMMV

Re: Lightning proof?

2007-06-16 Thread Feroze
Thanks, much appreciated. I only have only UPS and one surge protector.
The UPS gets power through the surge protector which should hopefully
short out before the surge gets through the PC. The problem in winter is
that there are frequent power outages and when the power suddenly comes
on its on a higher power than when it went off. Recently when theres a
power out or a treat of a storm I unplug everything and go read a book

Feroze

graywolf wrote:
Didn't think I was going to do a surge protector tutorial grin.

On the cheap surge protectors about the only way is to take them apart and
use an ohm meter on the MOV. On the expensive ones there is usually a green
LED or something that tells you it is still good, if it goes out or turns red
the MOV is bad. Please note that some of the cheap ones have a LED, but as
far as I know all it tells you is that there is power at the plug.

A MOV, like any varistor has a non-linear resistance, as the current goes up
the resistance goes up exponentially damping the surge. If the surge is
beyond the capability of the MOV it should blow acting as a fuse. The real
expensive ones also supposedly have MOV's that work the opposite shorting the
 surge to ground as well.

Sometimes that surge can peak faster than the MOV can react and a smaller
surge gets through, and sometimes, not often, they can fuse instead of open
when they blow. That is why I like to use a couple in series. The real reason
for the extra one on the laser printer is to prevent back surges from
damaging things between it and the other surge protectors. Laser printer
fusors tend to pull a lot of current suddenly causing a surge although it is
not as severe as a power-line is likely to be.

Please note that I am living in the mountains and thunderstorms walk through
this valley very frequently. When I lived in the lowlands I never actually
experienced lightning damage to my equipment. And the recent damage was to
network stuff which was not protected. 3 other of the 5 apartments in the
building had more damage than I did. Luckily no fires.

Sometimes a surge partially gets past the first MOV. Also sometimes

MOV is short for Metal Oxide Varistor and is is the semiconductor inside

Oh, thanks, was a bit worried. My average split on any particular pack
shot is 70/30 portrait/landscape, and mostly with the 100mm macro, which
to me is pretty heavy. I think I'll get this

When Brian said twisting I assumed that the plate wasn't made thick
enough to prevent it warping and that the plate wasn't well made.

Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote:
 There's no problem.

Some camera and lens assemblies are heavy and/or unbalanced enough
that simple friction between the plate and the body are not enough to
hold them in place properly when flipped over on their side for a
portrait oriented photo, they'll tend to twist. So Manfrotto offers a
plate with a ridge on it that allows the camera's edge to butt up
against that and help prevent twisting.

Most of the tripod QR systems offer standard flat plates and fitted
plates like this, to handle a variety of needs and situations.
Calling it a problem is exaggerating the reason for their existence.

Since I use mostly lightweight lenses, I have never needed a fitted
plate for the DS or K10D.

The plates are plenty strong and don't warp, however the leverage of
some lens/camera combos is just beyond the friction/tightness that can
be applied with the regular QR shoe and tripod screw fixing.

we started with. No my friend when the budget allows I'm getting a

Hi,

I've seen that one, didn't like how it worked either. Most of the stuff
I shoot is products and a few portraits, speed isn't the issue but
stability is. I haven't seen this head so I can't tell if the grip is
stable enough.

The nearest ballhead I can find is 488, and that one looks like a medium
format head, argh but I suppose the bigger the ball the better it is!

Thanks

Bob W wrote:
I have the predecessor of this. Mine has the vertical rather than

mention. I don't find the head at all useful though, and I have hardly
ever used it. The problem for me is that when you release the grip it
tends to shift slightly from the position you've framed. More
seriously though is that you can't really track with it - you need one
hand for the grip, another hand for the shutter release, and a third
hand for focussing (assuming you sometimes focus manually) or zooming.
 I find a conventional ballhead much more usable - I have the 499-RC (I
think) which is very good indeed, and I would recommend it over the
 grip ball head.

I've got to factor in the cost of the tripod as well as shipping (these

service from the head, write it off over 3 years and replace it if needed.

The other head I looked at was a Acratech Ultimate, but at $320 with
shipping, a bit more than I can afford at the moment

But as I said in my earlier response, the 322 cannot compete with my
other ball heads with regard to positioning/clamping accuracy. It's
ok, a little too sloppy to use for high precision work.

(The 322RC2 is my least expensive ball head. I bought it for speed in
the field and ease of positioning, the 468MGRC2 is much more precise
and about double the price; the Kirk BH-1 is about 4x the price and a

I don't know why I'd try to track a moving subject with a ball head

grip on the left and use AF with AF-C and pattern AF active.

together to process a whole bunch of files automatically.

Setting up is as simple as opening the actions window, clicking on
record, then doing the thing manually, clicking on stop when you are
done, then saving the action. Next time you want to use that action you
just click run and it does all those steps automatically.

Then you set up an batch to run that action on a whole folder of files.
To convert a folder full of, say, images you want to convert to jpegs
and put on a CD to give a client, it is then as simple as selecting the
 folder and the batch process.

The real problem with Photoshop is that it does so damn many things it
is hard to know all of them. Once you know about them they are usually
 fairly easy to use.

Script isn't really the right term for it.
In Elements 4 it's FileProcess Multiple files.
In CS They're called 'actions' which I find powerful but rather
complicated. Actions can be called via FileAutomateBatch.
If you have CS2 you have everything in Elements 4 plus a million
other things, it's a bit much for me to do a batch of eekBay pics
 in.

bought one first and tested it... I fitted them with AA Lithium
batteries, seem to get several hundred exposures apiece that way and
 are very portable.

I bought a 20 inch cube. Although I've made things like this before,
the EZCube for $90 saves time and effort, and packs down very small,
is completely collapsible/portable with virtually no effort at all.
It works very nicely. I can fit it, two E-Flash panels, the SB-30, a
pair of small clamp-on stands and a flash meter into a very small
tote bag along with the *ist DS body, remote release, A50 Macro and
2x-S teleconverter. Add my small tripod, and I have Tabletop-Studio-

(I've used the K10D with this setup but I find that 10Mpixel is
really overkill for the table top work I've done. Nobody's making
13x19 presentation prints of stuff they have to sell on Ebay. ;-)

Hi Stan,

I don't really have a problem setting the lights up, currently I shoot
my products on a plexiglas table, and can set up so that I get a pure
white background straight from the camera, knockouts are 2 or 3 clicks
with the mask tool and then I dump the pics into the advert. This works
fine with shoes and cell phones, I kinda have a standard setup that
works most of the time, jewellery however seems to be a different kettle
of fish. One day I'd like to get results like this

No need to avoid fluorescent bulbs, they are actually quite good for
this type of work. I use a set of 5K compact fluorescent lamps in
white reflectors, the colour is excellent and repeatable. They are
very cool to work with temperature wise and since they are always on
provide greater flexibility for setting light and subject positions,
 there are no surprises.

For me anyhow the fgz does not seem to work very well with the K10D and
I've been attaching the flash to sync adaptor to the hot shoe and have

BTW: Remember that these are all manual flash units that you trigger
with their built-in slave. You cannot use a P-TTL flash to trigger
them in P-TTL mode ... the pre-flash will fool the slave receivers.
So if you have an AF-FGZ series flash, it has to be put into manual
output mode (if that's possible) or you have to use a simple external
flash as a trigger. That's one of the reasons I bought the Nikon
SB-30. It's tiny, light, and has a built-in IR flash shield so it can
be used purely as a trigger.

You have to set exposure 100% manually. Easy enough to do with a
flash meter or using the histogram on review or digital preview.

For Feroze RAW may be better for a few, best quality, shots.

Probably the best thing I can tell you is get Calumet's full catalog it

 Hi Don,

Shiny gold and silver are even harder :) My main problems at the moment
are eliminating the reflections of the light stands, the camera, me on
very shiny gold bands, hence the light tent. Please explain how you set
the WB from the fabric. WB is my bug bear at the moment. Its driving me
nuts. As for composition, I have a pair of 150W studio lights and just
use the modeling lights to check for shadows. However I am not carrying
around all this equipment, I have to look at these florescent lights

 Hi Feroze.
I too use the EZ-Cube with 3 cheap compact florescents in white
 reflectors.
These bulbs were $15.00 US for the 3 and last a very long time.
I set manual WB once from the white material of the cube and haven't had
to reset it in well over 2 years. I shoot strictly jpegs for eekBay
 stuff.
Daylight balanced bulbs are a bit more money but would allow you to
 shoot
with a preset, rather than manual, WB. Auto WB has never worked well for
 me in this application.
The biggest advantage to this (vs flash) is being able to see, and
 eliminate,
shadows before exposure. Since my items are all different colors,
 shapes and
sizes, this saves me a LOT of time.

The results are consistently very good, here's an example of a difficult

Unfortunately there is some problem shipping aerosol cans, ground

Whatever you get, test it on something cheap first. I've had bad experiences
with things that are supposed to wipe right off...
Jewelry can be a pain to photograph, even more of a pain to clean if spray
on gunk gets into little creviced and whatnot. Some jewelers don't like to
clean their product with ultrasound dips.

The tent looks like a good product, I think you should have no problems with

No need to avoid fluorescent bulbs, they are actually quite good for
this type of work. I use a set of 5K compact fluorescent lamps in
white reflectors, the colour is excellent and repeatable. They are
very cool to work with temperature wise and since they are always on
provide greater flexibility for setting light and subject positions,
 there are no surprises.

I use one of the EZCubes too, it's very handy. For lighting, I use a
pair of Paterson EFlash Panels and a Nikon SB-30 to use as a slave
trigger. Very even, very consistent light output, the Patersons are
 about $80 each.

Since I capture in RAW format, I do the color correction in post
processing. With the EZCube and flash units, the light is so
consistent that I can just apply a standard filter and don't even
have to worry about a calibration shot.

 Stop fretting. ]'-)

All of these firmware updates, on every camera I've owned to date,
 install the same way:

... I use a card reader to manipulate the files on the card, I don't
the camera into the computer ...

 - Format a storage card (I always format in the camera).
 - Unpack the download.
 - Copy the firmware binary file to the root directory of the storage.
 - Make sure your camera has a fully charged set of batteries or
 battery in it.
 - With the camera off, insert the card and close the card door.
 - Turn the camera on while holding down the Menu button (Pentax
 specific).

The camera will auto-load the firmware binary and present information
on the screen instructing you how to proceed to do the install. Once
 it's done ...

 - shut off the camera
 - remove the storage card
 - delete the firmware binary from the card
 - put the card back into the camera, turn it on, and format the card
 again.

You're ready to start using the camera with the new firmware. If you
made various configuration settings, they are often erased and the
camera set to its defaults, so you'll have to re-set it the way you
 want it.

I always wait to obtain the FW updates directly from Pentax' website.

 there better alternatives?

I've tried all the available solutions for using the iPod as a
portable storage device for photographic purposes. They're all
lacking, in my opinion. Poor transfer speeds and heavy battery
consumption are the norm. For people shooting just a modest number of
RAW or JPEG files, ok: it can work well enough. For those working
with RAW files in any volume it is pretty much hopeless.

I use an Epson P2000 portable multimedia viewer/player. It doesn't
process or allow preview of K10D RAW files (either PEF or DNG
format), but, as discussed the other day, it downloads them without
any problems. If you want to view, set the camera to produce RAW+JPEG
and set the JPEG processing to minimum size/** quality. This will
cost, on average, about 500K additional per frame on disk/card space
but allow you to review the files on the Epson's display.

I have tested this to be sure ... works like a charm. The Epson
 P2000, P4000, P4500 and P5000 are top-notch portable storage devices.
The P5000 is supposed to be able to process DNG files as well, but
it's likely not a full DNG implementation based on the information in
 Epson's FAQ so I wouldn't expect it.

Thanks, I'm checking bh now...

The only two PSDs I've had any experience with are the Epson P2000
and CompactDrive PD70X. Both work well with 1G SD files, and I've
tested the Epson P2000 with 2G SD cards and both K10D/*ist DS files,
but I don't own the PD70X so I don't know how well it does with 2G SD
 cards or K10D files explicitly.

I think the HyperDrive brand models are identical to the
 CompactDrive models.

I would go to the BH Photo website under storage devices and look
there for appropriate products rather than using Google. In general,
if it is a decent quality photographic produce, BH will tend to have
 it.

 Thanks Godfrey,

I don't really need one with a screen or anything fancy, just some
device I can dump files onto. Googleing the epson also brought up
another brand Archos. Not one I've heard of before, any opinions?

I have the CompactDrive PD6A - previous model to the PD70X. I have

If you are just looking for a reasonably cheap, fast unit, I would go
for the CompactDrive or HyperDrive. You can order directly on the
HyperDrive website (www.hyperdrive.com) or Adorama carries them, I
 believe.

I've had my eye on one for a while. The Lightscribe is very slow,
requires manual handling of the media, and is only grayscale imaging.

Re: Lightscribe

2006-10-02 Thread Feroze
Hi Lawrence,

I'm using these disks as a means to present the companies CI to them so
cost is not a factor. Considering what I charge them for a logo even $50
is cost would be nothing. I've looked at the coating system, its cost
$18650. I was using a canon printer to print the disks, but the ink does
smudge after awhile...and sharpies just don't cut it. Anybody laser
engrave a CD??

This is from LightScribe web page:
 --
Q: Does ultra-violet light fade a LightScribe label? How much does the
image fade, and over what period of time?

A: Sustained exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided, both to
prevent damage to the data side of the disc and possible fading of the
label image. The image will fade under direct sunlight, but the rate will
depend on the light's intensity and exposure time.
 ---

An alternative would be to use inkjet printable CD/DVDs.
I believe it is better - it takes much much less time than burning a
LightScribe DVD (you may have to burn it twice to achieve the contrast).

Epson Inkjet printers which can print directly on the CD/DVDs are cheap,
the inkjet printable media is also very cheap as compared with LightScribe
media. Of course, you have inkjet's full color rather than LightScribe's
monotonous grey. However, inkjet printed DVDs are not waterproof (unless
you spray some form of protection coating on top).
