Re: OT: Computer Question
When my PC is doing stupid things I generally run crap cleaner, www.ccleaner.com... Try this for the system restore http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 Joseph Tainter wrote: Sorry for the OT question, but the knowledge on this list is incredible. I hope someone can help me. I have a Dell laptop running XP. On Wednesday I installed a new, 19, 1280x1024 external Viewsonic monitor. At the same time I installed a little utility called Desktop Restore, which restores the position of your icons if they get rearranged. All seemed well until today--everything seemed to be working fine. Today I was using Firefox to search for a hotel in Stockholm. Suddenly Zone Alarm popped up a window saying something was trying to access the internet. I clicked on Deny, but Zone Alarm wouldn'd respond and I couldn't get the message off my screen. So I rebooted the computer. That's when the problems started. Here they are: 1. My 1280 x 1024 monitor will only show in 1024 by 768. I cannot get it to switch to the correct resolution and stick. 2. Now the monitor on the laptop also comes up in 1024 x 768 when I boot up. This monitor I can get to the correct resolution (1280 x 800) by manually setting it in Properties. But I shouldn't have to do that. 3. Suddenly System Restore no longer works. I cannot go back to a previous restore point. 4. So I ran AVG Antivirus 8.5, after first updating it. I had it scan the entire drive. It could not find any viruses. Can anyone think of what may be going on? What should I try? Anti Photo Laser

Re: OT: Wedding Photography Website
I don't know how copyright works over on that side of the pond, but here in SA the copyright to the photo still belongs to the photographer unless the contract states otherwise. I'm a full time graphic designer and have had people pitch up for an interview with work that I've designed in their portfolio, people tend to pull off good shots from other sites to use as there's and some of the shots I saw looked pretty good, tempting to someone trying to boost their own portfolio. CSS=cascading style sheets, think of your web page as those Babushka dolls, each layer wrapped around the next layer, css its a way to separate content and markup, so if you wanted to change the colour or appearance of the site you'd only change the style sheet and the changes would happen through the site, you could makeover a 10 000 page website by editing one style sheet Yours is here: http://web.me.com/pnstenquist/wedding_photography/Photos_files/Photos.css basic : http://htmlhelp.com/reference/css/ If you willing to read a bit you could learn everything you need to create a site here: http://www.w3schools.com/css/ I seldom do weddings anymore, I can earn more money in less time without any grief by design a brochure or a websiteits a crappy way to earn a living, probally only that much worse than baby pics And I don't have to keep explaining that its not my lens that makes her look fat anymore... Re: Wedding Photography Website
Dreamweaver is hardly the best software for creating websites, it tends to bloat the html code with garbage, larger page sizes makes for inefficient page loads. You can edit your site with any html editor, even notepad. The most used style now to XHTML, css, js and for the future wml (wireless). Download the trial version of MS Expressions, I know its a MS product but it actually works, and if you can use MS word you can use expressions. You can hit me up anytime if you need some help with coding and stuff I've been watching this msnbc (I think) and it seems that anyone even remotely related to the motor industry is having a hard time, they interviewed the CEO of GM yesterday and he stated that if they fail it would directly or indirectly affect 3 million people...scary stuff PN Stenquist wrote: Thanks Feroze. Very helpful. I rarely shot weddings on film, but I did turn over the negs a couple of times. It was just too much hassle to try to manage orders. But that was many years ago, and I shot very few of them. I don't plan on doing many weddings. My main occupation is advertising copywriting, but work is scarce in Detroit these days, so I hope to do some weddings and virtual reality panos to fill in the gaps. However, I'm looking to relocate and take on a new full-rime ad job, so my wedding photography business may be short lived. But building the sites is educating me a bit. In the meantime, I'm working on the Dreamweaver tutorial and hope to advance my web skills. My advertising website, at http://www.paulnstenquist.com, is sorely in need of repairs and updates. But the person who created it is no longer available to fix it. It was built with Dreamweaver, so I'm hoping that after I get up to speed with that software I can download the site components and fix it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I wasn't refering to to his code in particular, just from experience in general. Like you say you've been using it for years, you'd know what the code needs and what needs to be deleted. Paul says his still learning, dreamweaver is going to be pretty heavy for someone who just wants to edit his own site.I tend to code by hand, only the minimum to make a page work, expressions works perfectly for that, and the css editor is built in, it works like tabs on a excel spreadsheet, I prefer studio to create scripts though Amita Guha wrote: On Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM, Feroze [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dreamweaver is hardly the best software for creating websites, it tends to bloat the html code with garbage, larger page sizes makes for inefficient page loads. I've been using Dreamweaver for years and haven't had too many problems with bloated code, although I always use it in the split Design/Code view and mainly use it as a code editor. This is the only one that I know of that will remove pitting or wiper damage. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2010itemType=PRODUCT Clay removes surface impurities , it dosn't fill in scratches. No hand treatment will work from what I've seen unless you willing to spend a couple months sandpapering your windscreen, you need to get a buffing machine like the above and sandpaper the scratches out, you not filling the cracks, you are lowering the level of the surrounding area to the level of the scratch, if that makes sense http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18275 3M also makes some highly recommended products but I don't know if they will sell it retail to you, I usually buy it from a panel beater Thanks for that. I did manage to find the Maguires stuff on a UK website yesterday. There seems to be the opinion here that it will (with some effort) remove the fine scratches one (specifically, a _previous_ owner) can generate by using the wipers dry. Re: Lightning proof?
Thanks, much appreciated. I only have only UPS and one surge protector. The UPS gets power through the surge protector which should hopefully short out before the surge gets through the PC. The problem in winter is that there are frequent power outages and when the power suddenly comes on its on a higher power than when it went off. Recently when theres a power out or a treat of a storm I unplug everything and go read a book Feroze graywolf wrote: Didn't think I was going to do a surge protector tutorial grin. On the cheap surge protectors about the only way is to take them apart and use an ohm meter on the MOV. On the expensive ones there is usually a green LED or something that tells you it is still good, if it goes out or turns red the MOV is bad. Please note that some of the cheap ones have a LED, but as far as I know all it tells you is that there is power at the plug. A MOV, like any varistor has a non-linear resistance, as the current goes up the resistance goes up exponentially damping the surge. If the surge is beyond the capability of the MOV it should blow acting as a fuse. The real expensive ones also supposedly have MOV's that work the opposite shorting the surge to ground as well. Sometimes that surge can peak faster than the MOV can react and a smaller surge gets through, and sometimes, not often, they can fuse instead of open when they blow. That is why I like to use a couple in series. The real reason for the extra one on the laser printer is to prevent back surges from damaging things between it and the other surge protectors. Laser printer fusors tend to pull a lot of current suddenly causing a surge although it is not as severe as a power-line is likely to be. Please note that I am living in the mountains and thunderstorms walk through this valley very frequently. When I lived in the lowlands I never actually experienced lightning damage to my equipment. And the recent damage was to network stuff which was not protected. 3 other of the 5 apartments in the building had more damage than I did. Re: Bogen / Manfrotto 322R Ball Head - Anti twist RC2 plate
Oh, thanks, was a bit worried. My average split on any particular pack shot is 70/30 portrait/landscape, and mostly with the 100mm macro, which to me is pretty heavy. I think I'll get this When Brian said twisting I assumed that the plate wasn't made thick enough to prevent it warping and that the plate wasn't well made. Feroze Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: There's no problem. Some camera and lens assemblies are heavy and/or unbalanced enough that simple friction between the plate and the body are not enough to hold them in place properly when flipped over on their side for a portrait oriented photo, they'll tend to twist. So Manfrotto offers a plate with a ridge on it that allows the camera's edge to butt up against that and help prevent twisting. Most of the tripod QR systems offer standard flat plates and fitted plates like this, to handle a variety of needs and situations. Calling it a problem is exaggerating the reason for their existence. Since I use mostly lightweight lenses, I have never needed a fitted plate for the DS or K10D. This is the full name from BH: Bogen / Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead (RC2 Quick Release) - Supports 11 lbs (5 kg) I've never spent this much on just a head, but my current tripod just cant hold the camera with the macro lens on, when its trying to focus (and it hunts a lot) then theres a slight trembling in the tripod I find very troubling. I don't really shoot macro's in the true sense, unless you count the really tiny products I sometimes get. Traveling with all that gear, your kidding, how it usually works is I pack half of a suitcase, she packs another one and a half, we come back with my stuff in a plastic bag in the boot and she has more clothes than we started with. No my friend when the budget allows I'm getting a monopod.:) Feroze Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: I presume you mean the 322RC2 Grip Ball head. This is the head I use most. It's a little less precise than my other heads in terms of positioning ... the 468MGRC2 has a more precise positioning capability and a higher load capacity, for instance ... but for field work with the setup you mention I suspect the 322 will do you well. Re: Bogen / Manfrotto 322R Ball Head
Hi, I've seen that one, didn't like how it worked either. Most of the stuff I shoot is products and a few portraits, speed isn't the issue but stability is. I haven't seen this head so I can't tell if the grip is stable enough. The nearest ballhead I can find is 488, and that one looks like a medium format head, argh but I suppose the bigger the ball the better it is! Thanks Bob W wrote: I have the predecessor of this. Mine has the vertical rather than horizontal grip. It's certainly strong enough for the stuff you mention. I don't find the head at all useful though, and I have hardly ever used it. The problem for me is that when you release the grip it tends to shift slightly from the position you've framed. More seriously though is that you can't really track with it - you need one hand for the grip, another hand for the shutter release, and a third hand for focussing (assuming you sometimes focus manually) or zooming. I find a conventional ballhead much more usable - I have the 499-RC (I think) which is very good indeed, and I would recommend it over the grip ball head. -- Bob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Feroze Sent: 08 May 2007 22:21 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Bogen / Manfrotto 322R Ball Head Hi, Anyone own one of the above, like it? Thanks for your comments, I have to weight the amount invested in any piece of equipment against what I'm getting out of it. I've got to factor in the cost of the tripod as well as shipping (these 2 items to South Africa is $90 shipping), I'd probably a few good years service from the head, write it off over 3 years and replace it if needed. But as I said in my earlier response, the 322 cannot compete with my other ball heads with regard to positioning/clamping accuracy. It's ok, a little too sloppy to use for high precision work. (The 322RC2 is my least expensive ball head. I bought it for speed in the field and ease of positioning, the 468MGRC2 is much more precise and about double the price; the Kirk BH-1 is about 4x the price and a far far higher quality ball head.) I don't know why I'd try to track a moving subject with a ball head mount, but if you wanted to do that with the 322, you could set the grip on the left and use AF with AF-C and pattern AF active. You cannot use a P-TTL flash to trigger them in P-TTL mode ... the pre-flash will fool the slave receivers. So if you have an AF-FGZ series flash, it has to be put into manual output mode (if that's possible) or you have to use a simple external flash as a trigger. That's one of the reasons I bought the Nikon SB-30. It's tiny, light, and has a built-in IR flash shield so it can be used purely as a trigger. You have to set exposure 100% manually. No need to avoid fluorescent bulbs, they are actually quite good for this type of work. I use a set of 5K compact fluorescent lamps in white reflectors, the colour is excellent and repeatable. My father is an exotic dancer in a gay club and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and give them lap dances. Sometimes if the offer is really good, he'll go out with a man, rent a cheap hotel room and let them sleep with him. The teacher quickly set the other children some work and took little Billy aside to ask him if that was really true. Thanks Godfrey, I don't really need one with a screen or anything fancy, just some device I can dump files onto. Googleing the epson also brought up another brand Archos. Poor transfer speeds and heavy battery consumption are the norm. For people shooting just a modest number of RAW or JPEG files, ok: it can work well enough. For those working with RAW files in any volume it is pretty much hopeless. I use an Epson P2000 portable multimedia viewer/player. It doesn't process or allow preview of K10D RAW files (either PEF or DNG format), but, as discussed the other day, it downloads them without any problems. If you want to view, set the camera to produce RAW+JPEG and set the JPEG processing to minimum size/** quality. This will cost, on average, about 500K additional per frame on disk/card space but allow you to review the files on the Epson's display. I have tested this to be sure ... works like a charm. The Epson P2000, P4000, P4500 and P5000 are top-notch portable storage devices. The P5000 is supposed to be able to process DNG files as well, but it's likely not a full DNG implementation based on the information in Epson's FAQ so I wouldn't expect it. Thanks, I'm checking bh now... Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: The only two PSDs I've had any experience with are the Epson P2000 and CompactDrive PD70X. Both work well with 1G SD files, and I've tested the Epson P2000 with 2G SD cards and both K10D/*ist DS files, but I don't own the PD70X so I don't know how well it does with 2G SD cards or K10D files explicitly. I think the HyperDrive brand models are identical to the CompactDrive models. I would go to the BH Photo website under storage devices and look there for appropriate products rather than using Google. In general, if it is a decent quality photographic produce, BH will tend to have it. If you are just looking for a reasonably cheap, fast unit, I would go for the CompactDrive or HyperDrive. Re: Lightscribe
Hi Lawrence, I'm using these disks as a means to present the companies CI to them so cost is not a factor. Considering what I charge them for a logo even $50 is cost would be nothing. I've looked at the coating system, its cost $18650. I was using a canon printer to print the disks, but the ink does smudge after awhile...and sharpies just don't cut it. Anybody laser engrave a CD?? Feroze Lawrence Kwan wrote: On Sat, 30 Sep 2006, Feroze wrote: Does anyone here use lightscribe? Doing my homework, figured out the costing. How much does the image fade, and over what period of time? A: Sustained exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided, both to prevent damage to the data side of the disc and possible fading of the label image. The image will fade under direct sunlight, but the rate will depend on the light's intensity and exposure time. --- An alternative would be to use inkjet printable CD/DVDs. I believe it is better - it takes much much less time than burning a LightScribe DVD (you may have to burn it twice to achieve the contrast). Epson Inkjet printers which can print directly on the CD/DVDs are cheap, the inkjet printable media is also very cheap as compared with LightScribe media. Of course, you have inkjet's full color rather than LightScribe's monotonous grey. However, inkjet printed DVDs are not waterproof (unless you spray some form of protection coating on top). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
