Re: Any source for an LX rewind knob?

2009-08-16 Thread Jon Myers
To answer the questions of where I'm at... Atlanta, GA.

I contacted Eric Hendrickson, and as soon as I can remember my paypal
password I'll probably get a used knob from him.

I still can't believe I dropped my poor little LX. :(

Any source for an LX rewind knob?

2009-08-13 Thread Jon Myers
My LX took an unfortunate butterfingered tumble landing rewind knob
first on a concrete floor. It's bent to the point it binds now. Shaft
it attaches to is fine, just need the knob assembly. Anybody have a
junker they can send the knob from, or a suggestion as to where else
to inquire about parts? I called Pentax customer service, they
referred me to another number (parts department) where I was told they
hadn't had that part in a long time.

Thanks.

Cool!

That reminds me...

I have a 1947 Silvertone AM/FM pushbutton memory

but makes a buzzing sound... i've been told it's got a
bad capacitor somewhere in it... not too many there,

Re: Free Film (From Kodak)

2006-12-08 Thread Jon Myers
I filled that form out too, but they sent the wrong
format - I feel sure I indicated that I wanted 135,
but what arrived was 4 rolls of 120. Oh well, beggars
can't be choosers. And I've already found a home for
it. The person that informed me about the free film
shoots 120.

--- Mark Cassino [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I forgot all about this until today - a few months
 ago my brother sent
me a link to film give-away page on the Kodak
 Website. I filled out the
questions, telling them I shoot 35mm and medium
 format. I goofed up
though and where it asked to categorize my
 photography I intended to
click on 'fine art' (hey - we all have our
 ambitions) but accidentally
clicked on 'government / military'. They were right
 next to each other
 on the alphabetical listing (F-G).

I sorta hoped to get some Tri-X or Plus-X, but then
 I already have
several rolls of both in the freezer. Instead today
 a tube arrived with
two 35mm rolls of Porta 400 (one VC, once NC) and
 two 120 rolls of Porta
 160 (again - VC/NC)

Cool! I have no fast color 35mm film left and the
 ISO 160 Porta is
exactly what I'd use for landscapes.

Plus there's a substantial coupon ($25) for orders
 of $125 or more. My
color 120 film supply is dwindling (I'm down to just
 5 220 rolls of NPS
and 3 rolls of Konica Impressa 50) so I may just
 bite on this. Yeah yeah
 yeah - I got the K10D, but a well exposed 6x7
 negative still rocks for
 some applications.

I checked and the promo ended - otherwise I'd post
 the link to it.

In the K10D, Pentax has joined the rest, by adding

Another old building at the facility:

Somebody in an IRC channel said they were too
straightforward, and the grass in the first shot was
perhaps overexposed. I really just wanted to get a
feel for the lens, but these 3 stood out to me as
being fairly good. Film was gold 100 that expired in
2002.

SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7 50mm: Very nice! With caps. This

SMC Pentax-M 1:2.8 40mm: Pancake lens. With caps. Has
box, lacks original packing materials though. I see a
tiny spot on the edge of the front element. Doesn't
come off using my lens cloth. Never affected images
anyway. This needs to go too! $100

ME SE: Brown leatherette, diagonally split focusing
screen. Has scratches on advance lever and cap, minor
marks on bottom, tiny ding on prism. Otherwise very
nice cosmetically. With body cap and viewfinder cap.
Has a minor light leak, so it probably needs seals
around the back. Advance lever doesn't detent into
place. I hate to sell this... only needs the light
leak fixed to be a very nice working body. $30

ME-II winder: Works great. Looks fine. Very clean
inside. Still has the remote socket cover in place.
$30

A3000: One darn handy camera body. Av or P exposure
modes and a built in film advance winder. Works great,
looks fine. Has body cap. Really hate to see this
go... $40

Re: Setting aperture -- film SLRs

2006-04-11 Thread Jon Myers
I believe most of the newer film SLRs aside from the
*ist and ZX-30/50/60 assume you want to be in program
or shutter priority if the lens is set to A or lacks
manual settings.

The old bodies that don't utilize the A setting
pretty much can't use a lens that doesn't have manual
aperture settings, according to bdimitrov's site.

For details on a specific camera body, I usually just
download the user's manual from Pentax and give it a
flip-through.

--- Unca Mikey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

A quick question, something I am curious about --
 I've read a lot
here about the compatibility of older lenses on
 newer bodies, but
 what about the other way?

Specifically, on film bodies without a thumbwheel
 (MZ-S, ZX-5n, etc),
how do you change the aperture when the lens is set
 on A or the
lens does not have an aperture ring? Is there a way
 to directly
change the aperture on the body? I assume you can
 affect aperture
indirectly by changing shutter speed, but can you
 operate in Av mode?

Are such lenses even usable on older bodies like the
 MX?

 Thanks.

Re: Setting aperture -- film SLRs

2006-04-11 Thread Jon Myers
I believe that is a fair prediction based on what I've
seen with my cameras. Pentax manuals do state that
using the A setting on a body that doesn't support
it will result in incorrect metering.

As the aperture ring is closed down to A, the
aperture simulator tab on the mount continues to go
past f/22, yet the aperture gets no smaller. This was
observed by me on an A50/2.

--- John Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I believe lenses set on A will behave as if set to
 f22 (although
the metering circuitry may very well believe they're
 set to f32).
I'd guess lenses without aperture rings will behave
 the same way,
and stop all the way down, rather than remaining
 wide open.

damned, it's going home with me. I'll just have to eat

I wonder if the decrease in popularity of film will
cause accessories such as this for the pro film
cameras to severely drop in price. I have noticed that
high end Nikon film stuff is selling far cheaper than
just a couple years ago, and it seems to me that the
Pentax stuff hasn't dropped nearly as much - actually
going up in some cases.

Finally got it apart. Found a stray scrap of metal of

and the camera functions normally again, or so it
seems.

Only problem I see now is the winding lever and cap
are rather badly gashed up. I got impatient and used a
bit of an industrial strength tool on the cap that put
a deep gash in it as well as some scratches on the
lever. I'd like to find replacements for these, if

where there is a very lively market 6 mornings a
 week.

Two other enticing features are interesting
 geometric
designs inlaid on the sidewalks, and an incredible
number of bicycles. This shot caught both in the
 market square.

How to remove ME winding lever?

2006-02-20 Thread Jon Myers
My ME SE has taken spells of locking up the mirror,
transport, or shutter release lately. Have studied
various sites detailing trouble spots for these
cameras, and am trying to disassemble the body for
repairs - but I can't seem to get the wind lever off.
Do I understand correctly that the plain round cap in
the middle unscrews reverse threaded (ie, righty
loosy)? I've tried to unscrew it, but all I've done so
far is scratch up my pretty camera. What's the best
way to get that goofy thing off?

Pretty much all of them - even my new M*300/4.

 2. Which lens will you only bring out in the nicest

 having some age to it,

I'd be saddened if my nicer stuff got ruined (applies

LX grouchy when cold

2006-02-10 Thread Jon Myers
I've discovered that my LX acts up when it's cold. But
only when cold.

What it's doing resembles the sticky mirror issue,
but the mirror isn't sticking to the bumper at all. So
that's not the case. Pressing the shutter release
causes the mirror to start to move, it gets a few
millimeters off the bumper and then moves very slowly
upwards while the winder complains. Works beautifully
when at room temperature though.

What could be the cause and remedy of this?

I love ebay.

2006-01-30 Thread Jon Myers
This has been a month or two ago, but I don't recall
bragging about this one to the list, so I guess I'll
blather about it now. :)

Saw a 35 mm Pentax camera and two lenses listed in
the PS category. Clicked on it, and it's obviously an
ME SE (M-series body with brown leatherette). Had two
zoom lenses of some sort in the auction, but I also
noticed a little bitty tiny lens in the picture - I
emailed the seller to ask about it, and sure enough
it's the M40/2.8 pancake lens. I negotiated a better
shipping rate with the seller (listing quoted an
obscene amount) and still ended up paying less
shipping than I thought. So all in all, I paid under
$30 shipped for the following:

ME SE body, _very_ clean, seems to work except frame
counter died after the first test roll
M40/2.8 with caps and box
Soligor 28-80, already resold it on ebay, got back
nearly 2/3 what I paid for the lot.
Sigma 80-200 with a foggy element inside
Vivitar 283 flash and sync cord
Pile of misc filters, paperwork, accessories, etc.

I love this little ME SE. It's just in such nice
shape, and I'm rather partial to the brown
leatherette. I can't help but wonder what a 43mm Ltd.
would look like on it.

I am curious about fixing the counter though. At
first, it jammed past the 36, but careful prodding
where the back closes and enables the counter allowed
it to spin back to the start, but now it acts like it
wants to advance, but doesn't catch and falls back to
the start.

Enablement: M*300/4

2006-01-26 Thread Jon Myers
I've got a M*300/4 on its way to me. I'm stoked. Now I
need something super duper wide, like an M20/4 or one
of the 15s (yeah right, neither is happening anytime soon)

Re: Tokina zoom from eBay

2006-01-11 Thread Jon Myers
I had a similar deal a while back with a whole camera
bag full of goodies. I may sell some of it to fund
further gear aquisition. :)

I received, in the mail today (8:00am), a lens
that was posted in the UK on Monday afternoon. Its
a Tokina 70-210, 4.5-5.6 'Red Ring'. It has a UV
filter (not mentioned in the listing), a soft
pouch and two lens caps (also not mentioned). It's
pristine -- there's not a mark of the front glass
or the back either. The 'K' mount looks like it's
never been attached to a camera. After removing
the dust (from the 'velvet' lining of the pouch )
I've failed to find a single scratch or wear mark
on the barrel. I paid £9.99 plus £8 for postage.

Re: Meter adjustment of ME

2005-12-22 Thread Jon Myers
I have brand new batteries of proper type, and have
run the aperture resistor and ISO resistor around
quite a bit, no change. Watching the meter while
making those adjustments shows quite linear change in
shutter speeds, not jumping around like I'd expect if
it was corroded.

I believe I've either got to use 4x exposure
compensation all the time, set the ISO for similar
effect, or take it apart and see if I can adjust it
back close to correct.

On a side note, I'm most impressed by the ME SE body,
even after using an LX for over a year now. True it
doesn't have all the wonderful bells and whistles of
the LX, but it's so TINY! The one I've got is in such
very nice condition too, aside from this meter issue.

I'm curious how it'd be with a silver 43mm Limited on
it. :)

  Work the ISO resistor some.
That is, twist the ASA dial thru all the ASA
 settings.
Do it enough times to get any oxidation off of
 the contacts underneath.

And also run the exposure compensation ring back
 and forth, too, while
  you're at it.

May as well run the aperture simulator a few times
as well. On the LX it is
as prone to cause exposure problems as the ISO
 resistor, I expect this is
the same situation on other Pentax bodies.

Meter adjustment of ME

2005-12-21 Thread Jon Myers
Hi all, I have a technical question for you.

Been away from the list for a bit, but re-subbed
'cause I got another toy: Very nice and clean ME-SE,
the pancake lens, and a pile of other misc goodies in
an ebay lot. All looks very nice, but the ME-SE meter
is way off compared to my other bodies - it wants to
underexpose bad. I'd rather not have to leave it on 4x
to get a decent exposure.

Was going to try to find disassembly instructions and
figure out how to get the meter closer to correct, but
is there a more accurate way a talented DIY-type can
properly adjust it besides just comparing it to what
other camera bodies read with the same lens and
exposure settings? I can't imagine this being
something a shop would do cheap enough to be
worthwhile to me. Recent disassembly and reassembly of
a Spotmatic F went quite well, but that didn't involve
meter calibration.

Thoughts? Advice? Flames?

-Jon Myers.
