I think what the electric car industry needs to do is adopt the
"propane" business model: You don't generally get your propane tank
refilled, you exchange it for a filled one. Someday you should be able
to pull into a service station in your electric car and have your
almost-depleted battery exchanged for a fully charged one (batteries
would have to log the number of charge/discharge cycles they've been
through in order to vary the credit you get for the one you're
exchanging). This would of course require standardization of car
batteries and creation of a quick remove/replace architecture. A lot
of standardization and infrastructure hurdles to clear, to be sure,
but I don't see battery charging rates approaching the time it takes
to fill a 10-gallon gasoline tank any time soon.

something especially good/rare and/or cheap they like to post about it
and they call those posts gloats. There are two kinds of people in

The new Pen E-PL1

2012-11-23 Thread Michael Beacom
Hi-

I've been fooling around with a new Pen E-PL1. Adapters let me use my one M39
lens, a couple of C mount lenses, and my K-mount lenses. (The K mount adapter
has a ring that lets me control the aperture, even when the lens is missing the
aperture ring.) The camera has a nice Grainy Film filter that I've been
abusing. The camera looks kind of funny with the relatively huge 12-24mm zoom
bolted to it.

You can see the evidence here:

The cat pictures have been segregated here:

The round pictures were made with an old c-mount lens- a Kern-Paillard YVAR
16mm, f2.8 cinema lens. It seems to match up nicely with the Grainy Film setti

Others were made with a new Pentax 25mm f1.4 CCTV lens, and a couple other
lenses.

Comments and criticisms are welcome.

Re: PDML Digest, Vol 77, Issue 105

2012-09-24 Thread Michael Beacom
Well- I did it.

The Pen got here today, the m42 and K adapters arrived last Friday. It looks
like a nice way to get a little more use out of the old manual focus lenses.

Cameraquest will be glad to sell you a Voigtlander 17.5mm f/0.95 or 25mm f/0.95
manual focus, micro 2/3 lens for about $1200 each...

Did a little poking around with it tonight. Bolted on the old full frame
Zenitar 16mm fisheye. Most of the fishiness was cropped out by the small
sensor- There was surprisingly little distortion left. Will post a few
examples, once I get a SD card in it.

I had the same problems with manual focus that I do with any camera - I ain't
very good at it. If you have the time to zoom in with the preview button you
can do very well. And I have had good luck with close-up work.

Frankly I use mine all the time as my carry around back-up and video
shooter. I advise you to snap one up. There are adapters for almost any type
of lens just search Amazon for micro 4/3s. Because of the sensor size
everything is more or less telephoto. Even my 10 to 20 Sigma is a 20 on the
Oly. One of my favorite Pentax lenses on Oly is the cheap but surprisingly
good 35-80. Plastic but very lightweight.

Try taping a piece of welder's glass over the front of the lens. However,

I've got a home made solar filter that I made decades ago out of a mylar

Re: F 50 f/1.7 or FA 50 f/1.7?

2011-11-21 Thread Michael Beacom
Thanks All-

I'm leaning to the 40 mm Limited, since I have an M 50 f/1.4.
I like the 40 mm's small size, and don't feel that f/2.8 is a limiting factor
when paired with the K5.
Plus, the better resolution of the K5 allows tighter crops, for those times I
really needed a 50mm lens.
(I better take the 35-80 zoom out, and simulate the cropping idea first...)

Cheers
Mike

The DA40/2.8 is one of my favorite lenses. I bought it because it's small. I
keep it on my K-x because it is small, and that gives me an SLR that I can
fit in a coat pocket. But, I love it for the photos it produces.

I find 50mm to be a bit of an awkward length on APS. Too narrow for
standard, to short for tele. I have an M 50/1.7, which I took a couple shots
with when I was buying it (for a stupidly cheap price) but haven't used it
since. It's a really nice piece of glass, I just almost never find myself
 reaching for that focal length.

When I need speed, I'd use the 50, otherwise I'd use the 40.

 a mint Pentax-A 50mm f1.7. The only bad part with the A 50mm f1.7 is
that they commonly have the little internal plastic tabs on the
aperture ring broken meaning that changing aperture is
difficult/impossible without disassembly/repair/reassembly. If you can
get it in the A position and are happy to leave it there (AV mode on
DSLR) you may not need to do anything with the lens. But THAT is the
main question to ask when buying this lens long distance. Can't tell
you how many I've seen with the problem.

 I've got an M 50 f1.4 on its way (also another F 50 f1.7) and they
both go on the block again (part of my Catch and Release program)
but I think I'll play with the M 1.4 for a bit first to see if the
extra speed/shallow depth of field does anything for me. Generally, I
keep a SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 around for when I want to scratch that
 itch.

Help Fill the Gap: 12-24mm and 77mm

Hi-

I bought a Pentax 12-24mm zoom, and a 77mm Limited with the K-5.
It should be fast, for indoors available light, and somewhat south of $500ish.

My first thought was the 40mm f2.8 Limited Pancake.

On second thought, the plastic mounted 35mm DA L f2.4 might make a nice interim
lens. it can be shifted to the K100D bag if a better lens comes along.

Any opinions or suggestions?

Re: Help Fill the Gap: 12-24mm and 77mm

2011-10-22 Thread Michael Beacom
I swapped a nice point and shoot for my parents ME Super,.and a couple of
lenses, Then hoovered up several nice manual focus lenses. One of my favorites
being a Russian Jupiter 9 85 mm screw mount. Thus, the bit about autofocus.

I like the notion of an interim zoom, to point to a useful focal length. Or,
maybe the plastic mounted 35mm DA L, depending on what is available.

I've been peeking at Craig's List, hasn't seen anything yet.

Thanks-
You have all given me a good bit of material to chew on. And list, and graph...
Betcha I can make a big project out of this!

Cheers
Mike

 Hi-

 I bought a Pentax 12-24mm zoom, and a 77mm Limited with the K-5.
It should be fast, for indoors available light, and somewhat south of

My first thought was the 40mm f2.8 Limited Pancake.

I love my 40/2.8. It's wonderfully small. I loaned someone my stormtrooper,
with it on it, and he thought it was just a body cap, didn't realize that
there was a lens on the camera until I pulled off the lens cap and started
taking pictures. It's also wonderfully sharp and has a lovely character to
it's photos. However, rather than buying it, I'd be look at the 35 macro, as
so often when I go on photo walks in the woods, I really wish I had a macro.
I had a raynox for it for a while but lost it when some stuff was stolen out
of the trunk of my car.

I've got the 31/1.8 and it's a wonderful lens, though I often miss the extra
2/3 stop that I would have gotten with the 30/1.4.

On second thought, the plastic mounted 35mm DA L f2.4 might make a nice
interim lens. it can be shifted to the K100D bag if a better lens comes

 Any opinions or suggestions?

 1) Wait until you've been shooting with the K-5 for a while and see exactly
what lengths, or speeds you are missing.

 2) Ask your friends and family if they have any old Pentax gear gathering
dust in their closets. You'd be amazed at how many K1000s with 50/1.7 lenses
are sitting around and haven't been used in decades, or years.

 3) look for cheap glass on craigslist.

Re: OT - You can't make this stuff up

2011-08-18 Thread Michael Beacom

Joining the ranks of inept is the bicycle riding junkie who reached into my
car's window and unlocked it, scooped the roll worth of quarters from the
change tray, opened the center console and snatched my wallet with it's
contents of a single $20 bill, every credit card, every ID, and every piece
if paper that I live by, Drivers License, VA ID, AARP, Medicare, VFW,
American Legion, Sierra Club, WWF, a card of forever stamps, Costco Card
and a few coupons for 50 free prints. Then he grabbed my last pair of
prescription sunglasses in their aluminum case. Not a huge amount of monitary
value, but days with no money to spend, and weeks to replace everything that
I can think of that was in the wallet.

All the while standing under the doughnut shops security camera . Granted, it
took me six of the seven days the security system retains before it's written
over to get the cops to actually go look at the images. They, and the shop's
employees, recognized the guy as a regular customer who rides his bike to buy
 a doughnut about every day.

This just a few weeks after Billy Bob, the dude who was working to get my
old Dodge, totaled by Farmer's last spring, back into streetable shape,
abandoned the shop he was working out. The owner kicked him out when he got
over $3000 behind in his rent. On his way out he apparently took some tools
that weren't his too. He had already had several tools and electronics of
mine disappear from the car. He was going to buy the car off me for $500
once he had it fixed up so he'd have something to drive.

Well, he does now. He never came back, so my car and Billy Bob are in the
wind. The police won't take a report that car was stolen because I gave him a
key to move it around while he was fixing it. So I had to report my tools and
electronics missing to my homeowners insurance, so they would report the car
as stolen. Because it was totaled by Farmers, it is illegal to drive on the
road, has no insurance, and the plates expire in December.

That's my August so far. How was yours?

Ouch- best of luck to your son. I know the feeling,

I did something similar, but not quite as serious.
I fell on my back on frozen soil, and pretty much pulverized my T9 vertebra.
The doc explained that if I was going to mash a vertebra, it was a good choice,
as it had a pair of ribs to stabilize it. At first, all they fed me was jello,
and then had the nerve to get upset that I wasn't having a bowel movement.
(Didn't recall when I had my last bowel movement, they were afraid my
intestines were paralyzed.) Still won't touch jello. It healed up well, and I'm
about half an inch shorter now.

Here's hoping for a good outcome.

Good luck to you all,

First gallery from a new K-5

2011-08-01 Thread Michael Beacom
Hi-

I got a brand new K-5 a couple of months ago. And a 77mm Limited, and a Pentax
12-23mm zoom.
The 77 Ltd is my new favorite lens- it's a little jewel. Pretty lens, too.

There is a Flickr album at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62343763@N00/sets/72157627290057996/

I tried about half a dozen times, and a message with a link in it would not
appear on the list. E-mails without a link seem to work.

Is it time for a small rodent sacrifice to the IT Gods?

Cheers

Re: Focus Chart online recommendations?

2011-07-31 Thread Michael Beacom
I'd be tempted to make a block with one face 45 degrees to another, and mount a
plate that would fit in the hot shoe. Slide the block into the hot shoe, and
set a level on the top.

One of the round ones with a bubble in the middle might be best, so the camera
is both level and and angled down at 45 degrees.

Any Opinions on Sigma's 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM?

2011-01-25 Thread Michael Beacom

Hi-

I was looking at Pentax's 12-24, when i stumbled across this one.
Anyone own or use Sigma's 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM?
Online reviews tend to rave about its sharpness. And I saw a couple
of posts about getting a good copy- suggesting QC problems.
Shocking- QC problems at Sigma...

I've been really happy with a Tokina 12-24mm for my Canon. It's about
time for the Pentax to catch up.

I've pretty much decided to get a K-5, and a lens or two. I think
this will fill out the wide end of things. And maybe a 40ish or 70ish
Limited.

Thanks

Re: Lens Hood suggestions?

I've heard of using the end of a large wooden dowel to sort of iron

And there is a tool to fix bent filter rings-

Even if the filter ring is beyond help, maybe someone will have a use

Well I've had it back for some time now and it's working better than
I had any right to expect, except for one small issue, the filter
ring is still bunged up. Replacement parts issue.

Unfortunately the screw in lens hood I'd been using won't. So I'm
looking for suggestions. What I'd really like is a clip on lens
hood for a ~35mm on full frame. Anybody have anything you can
recommend? (Boz's site shows the PH-S52 as the proper hood, but
it's listed as the proper hood for the 24mm on full frame as well so
what's up with that? Not to mention that it seems to be made out of
unobtainable these days). I'd really like something matched to the
APS-C format for proper hood length.

Re: PESO at the Barbershop

Thanks Christine-

The close cropping is lens choice- the color photos were taken with a
Canon L 200mm f2.8. I was surprised by the lack of camera movement.
The fast lens and bright sunlight worked nicely.
The Christmas photos were shot with a fast, Russian Jupiter 85 mm
screwmount lens. There was a lot going on in the room. The longish
lens was a help, but I chose to crop out the distracting bits.

Re: Which is the preferred battery charger

2010-12-12 Thread Michael Beacom
My favorite is the MAHA MH-C401FS charger. It has 4 independent
charging circuits for AA and AAA batteries, and it conditions the
batteries too.

What is the battery charger that is so highly recommended?

Re: PESO: The 5 Thousand dollar dog

He's a handsome pack-dog. Does he select lenses for you?

(I don't think I could convince my big, orange tom cat to wear
something like that, and follow me on a leash.)

(It's MY job to follow him when he's on a leash.)
(He works cheap, always available, and doesn't take direction)

Cheers,
Mike

 Hi all,

hand at street portraiture along the lines of Danny Santos. It's
clearly
not up to his standards, but I thought it wasn't too shabby as a
first

attempt. She was a much more interesting looking girl than the photo
indicates. As the title indicates, she had alabaster skin and
coal black
hair, along with bright blue eyes. She didn't resist at all when
I asked.

She actually seemed pleased, if a little embarrassed.

Up until now, I've been extremely hesitant about just walking up
to people
and asking them if I can photograph them. Turns out, people are
much more

willing than I ever would've believed.

Comments, critiques, and cash gifts welcome.

Looks a bit dark on my uncalibrated screen but still, just a lovely
portrait. Those eyes are nice and sharp, lovely softness at the edges
of her face. That very OOF face in the background really adds a feel
of mystery.

A winner!

level (as 645D), completely new AF.
To be confirmed: AF-C with priority on shutter or focus etc.

Body is exactly as K7, same grip, same battery.

Enjoy...
