I think what the electric car industry needs to do is adopt the "propane" business model: You don't generally get your propane tank refilled, you exchange it for a filled one. Someday you should be able to pull into a service station in your electric car and have your almost-depleted battery exchanged for a fully charged one (batteries would have to log the number of charge/discharge cycles they've been through in order to vary the credit you get for the one you're exchanging). This would of course require standardization of car batteries and creation of a quick remove/replace architecture. A lot of standardization and infrastructure hurdles to clear, to be sure, but I don't see battery charging rates approaching the time it takes to fill a 10-gallon gasoline tank any time soon. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. >>> >> >> >> -- >> PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List >> PDML@pdml.net >> http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net >> to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and >> follow the directions. > > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Hearing foreign langauages, WWV, Voice of America, morse code, slowly turning the tuning dial hearing the alien noises it produces. I still love to tune in to shortwave. Nowadays with convenience of internet radio a little of the romance is gone. Yes you can still get shortwave with it's hit and miss nature or you can instantly stream a crystal clear broadcast every time. The new thnology is great, the old was more fun. Tom C Numbers stations, Pirate Radio, and Radio Australia- without a satellite, or marine cable in sight. Australia is always a favorite, old tech, but still able to reach the opposite side of the globe. Almost always available at dawn, some days better than others. Power outages are always nice, when a lot of interference disappears. Too bad most of those cities have moved, or gone silent. Re: A little gloat...
Good show! It calls for an affectionate You Suck! (at least they mostly seemed affectionate) But you had me wondering about a gloat for a kit lens. Then I finished your post. It looks to me like its job is as much an autofocus adapter, as a teleconverter. Didn't Pentax make a similar item? Any tips on how to get one, and which one works better? Thanks Mike From: Darren Addy I'm on an Old Workworking Tools mail list and when someone finds something especially good/rare and/or cheap they like to post about it and they call those posts gloats. There are two kinds of people in the world, those that are jealous of others good fortune and those who are happy for another's good fortune. I've made a conscious decision to be the latter. Anyway, here's my gloat for the week. I found a DA 18-55mm II lens with hood caps for $90 http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-DA-18-55mm-F3.5-5.6-II-Version-2-Zoom-Lens.html but that of course is not the gloat. The gloat is for what was attached to it (included), a Tamron-F Pz-AF MC4 1.4x teleconverter. http://www.techtheman.com/2008/07/tamron-14x-pz-af-mc4-teleconverter.html Yay for me! -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
The new Pen E-PL1
Hi- I've been fooling around with a new Pen E-PL1. Adapters let me use my one M39 lens, a couple of C mount lenses, and my K-mount lenses. (The K mount adapter has a ring that lets me control the aperture, even when the lens is missing the aperture ring.) The camera has a nice Grainy Film filter that I've been abusing. The camera looks kind of funny with the relatively huge 12-24mm zoom bolted to it. You can see the evidence here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62343763@N00/sets/72157632083133242/ The cat pictures have been segregated here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62343763@N00/sets/72157632082755340/ The round pictures were made with an old c-mount lens- a Kern-Paillard YVAR 16mm, f2.8 cinema lens. It seems to match up nicely with the Grainy Film setti Others were made with a new Pentax 25mm f1.4 CCTV lens, and a couple other lenses. Re: PDML Digest, Vol 77, Issue 105
Well- I did it. The Pen got here today, the m42 and K adapters arrived last Friday. It looks like a nice way to get a little more use out of the old manual focus lenses. Cameraquest will be glad to sell you a Voigtlander 17.5mm f/0.95 or 25mm f/0.95 manual focus, micro 2/3 lens for about $1200 each... Did a little poking around with it tonight. Bolted on the old full frame Zenitar 16mm fisheye. Most of the fishiness was cropped out by the small sensor- There was surprisingly little distortion left. Will post a few examples, once I get a SD card in it. On Sep 12, 2012, at 11:57 AM, Don Guthrie wrote: Yes Mike, I have one and have mated it with manual focus lenses back to screw-mounted Pentax Ricoh Canon and and sharp an old Russian-made using a rather bizarre tilt-shift adapter. I had the same problems with manual focus that I do with any camera - I ain't very good at it. If you have the time to zoom in with the preview button you can do very well. And I have had good luck with close-up work. Frankly I use mine all the time as my carry around back-up and video shooter. I advise you to snap one up. There are adapters for almost any type of lens just search Amazon for micro 4/3s. Because of the sensor size everything is more or less telephoto. Even my 10 to 20 Sigma is a 20 on the Oly. One of my favorite Pentax lenses on Oly is the cheap but surprisingly good 35-80. F 50 f/1.7 or FA 50 f/1.7?

Re: F 50 f/1.7 or FA 50 f/1.7?
Thanks All- I'm leaning to the 40 mm Limited, since I have an M 50 f/1.4. I like the 40 mm's small size, and don't feel that f/2.8 is a limiting factor when paired with the K5. Plus, the better resolution of the K5 allows tighter crops, for those times I really needed a 50mm lens. (I better take the 35-80 zoom out, and simulate the cropping idea first...) I keep it on my K-x because it is small, and that gives me an SLR that I can fit in a coat pocket. But, I love it for the photos it produces. I find 50mm to be a bit of an awkward length on APS. Too narrow for standard, to short for tele. I have an M 50/1.7, which I took a couple shots with when I was buying it (for a stupidly cheap price) but haven't used it since. It's a really nice piece of glass, I just almost never find myself reaching for that focal length. When I need speed, I'd use the 50, otherwise I'd use the 40. Thanks- I'll have to keep the little plastic tab problem in mind. It's just that I'm in the market for an auto-focus lens- I have an M 50 f1.4, and A 50 f2. Give me a shout when you have a price for the F 50mm 1.7- I might be persuaded to take it off your hands. The only bad part with the A 50mm f1.7 is that they commonly have the little internal plastic tabs on the aperture ring broken meaning that changing aperture is difficult/impossible without disassembly/repair/reassembly. If you can get it in the A position and are happy to leave it there (AV mode on DSLR) you may not need to do anything with the lens. But THAT is the main question to ask when buying this lens long distance. Can't tell you how many I've seen with the problem. I've got an M 50 f1.4 on its way (also another F 50 f1.7) and they both go on the block again (part of my Catch and Release program) but I think I'll play with the M 1.4 for a bit first to see if the extra speed/shallow depth of field does anything for me. Hi- I bought a Pentax 12-24mm zoom, and a 77mm Limited with the K-5. It should be fast, for indoors available light, and somewhat south of $500ish. My first thought was the 40mm f2.8 Limited Pancake. I loaned someone my stormtrooper, with it on it, and he thought it was just a body cap, didn't realize that there was a lens on the camera until I pulled off the lens cap and started taking pictures. It's also wonderfully sharp and has a lovely character to it's photos. I had a raynox for it for a while but lost it when some stuff was stolen out of the trunk of my car. Re: OT - You can't make this stuff up
Joining the ranks of inept is the bicycle riding junkie who reached into my car's window and unlocked it, scooped the roll worth of quarters from the change tray, opened the center console and snatched my wallet with it's contents of a single $20 bill, every credit card, every ID, and every piece if paper that I live by, Drivers License, VA ID, AARP, Medicare, VFW, American Legion, Sierra Club, WWF, a card of forever stamps, Costco Card and a few coupons for 50 free prints. Then he grabbed my last pair of prescription sunglasses in their aluminum case. Not a huge amount of monitary value, but days with no money to spend, and weeks to replace everything that I can think of that was in the wallet. All the while standing under the doughnut shops security camera . Granted, it took me six of the seven days the security system retains before it's written over to get the cops to actually go look at the images. They, and the shop's employees, recognized the guy as a regular customer who rides his bike to buy a doughnut about every day. This just a few weeks after Billy Bob, the dude who was working to get my old Dodge, totaled by Farmer's last spring, back into streetable shape, abandoned the shop he was working out. The owner kicked him out when he got over $3000 behind in his rent. On his way out he apparently took some tools that weren't his too. He had already had several tools and electronics of mine disappear from the car. He was going to buy the car off me for $500 once he had it fixed up so he'd have something to drive. Well, he does now. He never came back, so my car and Billy Bob are in the wind. The police won't take a report that car was stolen because I gave him a key to move it around while he was fixing it. So I had to report my tools and electronics missing to my homeowners insurance, so they would report the car as stolen. Because it was totaled by Farmers, it is illegal to drive on the road, has no insurance, and the plates expire in December. That's my August so far. How was yours? Re: OT: Capture Camera Clip
Ouch- best of luck to your son. I know the feeling, I did something similar, but not quite as serious. I fell on my back on frozen soil, and pretty much pulverized my T9 vertebra. The doc explained that if I was going to mash a vertebra, it was a good choice, as it had a pair of ribs to stabilize it. At first, all they fed me was jello, and then had the nerve to get upset that I wasn't having a bowel movement. (Didn't recall when I had my last bowel movement, they were afraid my intestines were paralyzed.) Still won't touch jello. It healed up well, and I'm about half an inch shorter now. Any Opinions on Sigma's 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM?
Hi- I was looking at Pentax's 12-24, when i stumbled across this one. Anyone own or use Sigma's 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM? Online reviews tend to rave about its sharpness. And I saw a couple of posts about getting a good copy- suggesting QC problems. Shocking- QC problems at Sigma... I've been really happy with a Tokina 12-24mm for my Canon. Anybody have anything you can recommend? (Boz's site shows the PH-S52 as the proper hood, but it's listed as the proper hood for the 24mm on full frame as well so what's up with that? Re: PESO at the Barbershop
Thanks Christine- The close cropping is lens choice- the color photos were taken with a Canon L 200mm f2.8. I was surprised by the lack of camera movement. The fast lens and bright sunlight worked nicely. The Christmas photos were shot with a fast, Russian Jupiter 85 mm screwmount lens. There was a lot going on in the room. The longish lens was a help, but I chose to crop out the distracting bits. Is it just me, or does the first one look like it was taken in the '30s or '40s? He's a handsome pack-dog. Does he select lenses for you? (I don't think I could convince my big, orange tom cat to wear something like that, and follow me on a leash.) As the title indicates, she had alabaster skin and coal black hair, along with bright blue eyes. She didn't resist at all when I asked. Comments, critiques, and cash gifts welcome. Looks a bit dark on my uncalibrated screen but still, just a lovely portrait. Those eyes are nice and sharp, lovely softness at the edges of her face.
