Stan, I now have a surge protector / uninterruptible power supply for my
computer, and a surge protector for our mini split AC/heating system (whose
board also got toasted). Alas our electrician fell ill and went out of
business, and we haven’t identified another one yet to put in a surge protector
for the rest of the house.

A long delayed OT comment re your power surge and related computer issues…

Several years ago our trusted local electrician installed a whole-house surge
protector. A relatively small attachment on the main panel. I think it has
worked properly, we’ve had no issues even when neighbors were having storm
surge problems.

Nice collection.

Rue du Bac... When I lived in Paris, the line through the tunnel to the
other bank of the Seine still had the early 1900s Sprague-Thomson
rolling stock and the drivers loved to accelerate to the max on the way
down. Hell on wheels... :-)

Thanks.

She looks mighty yar - I look forward to comin' aboard and splicing the
mainbrace sometime, me hearty!

Although I could retire now I want to sell my house first and do it all at
once. I put it on the market earlier this year, but took it off again. I'll put
it up for sale again in the New Year and hopefully it will sell. I've moved
away from the idea of living in Paris to having a place over here on the South
coast and a place in Avignon, and splitting my time between them. The place in
France will have to wait until the exchange rate has improved though. Living in
Paris would not be different enough from living in London, and the pollution is
worse, although I really like being there and want to spend more time there.
Avignon is superb, ticks all my boxes.

Heave away! Haul away!

On the Pont des Arts they have replaced the lovely metalwork with glass/perspex
panels after part of the bridge fell (or was it pushed?) into the river under
the weight. On one of the other bridges they use metal rods, which the
authorities regularly remove and then slide all the locks into a big bucket.

Other cities get more than their fair share, as well. This is our main
railway bridge across the Rhine. The city authorities estimate there are
about 50 tons of them at any time. They regularly remove them but

They're not photography friends, so the pictures were taken in a rush, and in
mainly touristy spots because two of the people are not very familiar with
Paris. One photo thing I did manage to do was visit the excellent HCB in China

As badly as I want a 6x7, the thought of buying film and having it
developed is a bit discouraging. There's too much dust here to
contemplate hanging rolls to dry. If I had more disposable income I
would be shooting film a lot more. I'm almost afraid to buy more rolls
because it becomes kind of addicting.

I stayed in a flat about midway between Montparnasse and Barbes, which are

Unfortunately I never quite got into the photographic groove, partly because
every step was agony, but here are some photos, mainly Atmosphere!

Paris intramuros - that is, the 20 arrondissements - is very small, and it's
very easy to get about quickly using the 'grands axes', the boulevards and
large avenues. The secret of knowing Paris, indeed any city, is to
understand how they relate to each other, and to learn the twiddly bits in
between. It's only by walking or cycling that you can really learn a city,
in my view.

I'm not familiar with the rue Beaunier, although my map tells me it's quite
close to the Parc Montsouris, which I visited on Thursday and which is one
of my favourite parts of Paris. Indeed, if I retire to Paris when the time
comes that is the likeliest area for me to look for somewhere to live.
That's the South-East part of Paris, whereas I was more North Central, other
side of the river.

This was my approximate route from the apartment on the Wednesday - further

I can assure you:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?zoom_level=12submit=go

I walked a similar distance on Tuesday, far less on Thursday when I passed
right by rue Beaunier on my way to the park from the Villa Seurat, where
Henry Miller and Anais Nin used to live. Looking at these hobbles - I won't
dignify them by calling them walks - I'm not surprised my ankle isn't
getting any better.

You should take photos with an excrutiatingly sore ankle all the time!

I got back yesterday from a few days in Paris. I'd planned to cycle there
and back, but an ankle injury put paid to that idea. I can still barely
walk, but somehow I managed to hobble around. Not exactly the flaneur of
normal, but still.

I stayed in a flat about midway between Montparnasse and Barbes, which are
areas I didn't previously know particularly well, but are very interesting.

Unfortunately I never quite got into the photographic groove, partly because
every step was agony, but here are some photos, mainly Atmosphere!
Atmosphere! as Arletty would say...

It can be a safety issue too. The ash is fine as talc. Heard an
interview on NPR yesterday with a retired British Airways captain.
Flying a route near Indonesia several decades ago in a 747. Dark night,
no moon, flew into an ash cloud at 30 some thousand feet. All four
engines quit - the crew finally got them restarted decending though
12,000 ft.

Thank you very much - I'm very flattered - and to everyone else who has
commented.

I love Paris - it's the city I know best after London although there is
still a lot more I want to understand. For instance, it was only while I was
there this week that I learned about les grisettes (hence the photo of the
statue!) and the significance of 1830.

Paris is as interesting as London for me, but I haven't spent enough time
there yet fully to shake off the photo cliches and find my own voice. I hope
to do so of course, but I'm no Juan Buhler, and photographers such as Atget,
Brassai, Kertesz, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson, Izis, Ronis, Erwitt and so on
are a hard act to follow!

My favorite of all those stories is Mother Smith ...

The weather is bad; hard rain's a comin'. Two men drive up to Mother
Smith's place in a pickup truck to find her in her rocker on the front
porch.

Mother Smith! A hard rain's a fallin'. The weather-man says there's
gonna be a flood. We come to take you to the higher ground.

Mother Smith replies, No. The Lord will provide. And she keeps right
on a rockin'.

When the water gets up to the front porch, along comes a man in a rowboat.

Mother Smith! The rain's still comin' down and the weather-man says the
flood is gonna just get deeper. I come to take you to the higher ground.

Mother Smith replies, I have faith in the Lord. He will provide. And
she keeps right on a rockin'.

As the flood worsens, Mother Smith is forced up onto the roof, when
along comes a man in a helicopter.

Mother Smith! That roof is soon going to be under water soon. Your
house will be swept away. I've come to take you to the higher ground.

Mother Smith replies, My faith in the Lord is unwavering. He will be my
higher ground.

Mother Smith drowns.

When she reaches heaven and faces the throne, she says, God, I kept my
faith in you. Why didn't you save me?

God says, But Mother Smith, didn't I send two men in a pickup truck to
take you to the higher ground? Didn't I send you a man in a row boat?

I even sent you a man in a helicopter. Three times I sent for you.

Why didn't you go with one of them?

There were some good photos in there, staged or not. Obviously the
fact that they were staged makes them art photos and not PJ or

I've often voiced my dislike of photo contests here, and now I can add

I guess I can understand that these students found past winners to be
banal and uninspiring, but I disagree with their method of protesting
- even though I personally don't like photography (or any art)
competitions, I respect those that do - it's a personal choice, isn't
it? And the action of these young people may only serve to bring that
competition to an end. That is certainly disrespectful to the real
entrants. If they didn't like what was going on, they should have
just ignored it and not participated in any way.

Well, the fact that they were staged and good is the point: They
couldn't create photos that good if they didn't stage them. As for
previous winners being uninspiring, you have to take into account
that the judges can only pick winners from among those who've entered
- and sometimes the entries just aren't that good. Many times Doug
and I have been judging the GFM photo contest and found nothing
particularly worthy in one category. But we still have to pick a
winner!

I think the protest claim is BS: If they'd really wanted to protest
they'd have entered honestly and out-done the other entrants. By
resorting to cheating they demonstrated the opposite of what they
claimed. They demonstrated that the other entrants were too good to
beat *without* cheating!
