Re: OT - Photographer selling gear

I know exactly how he feels. My large un-tamed tropical garden is
presenting many challenges. I will be trying to remain positive by
treating it as a giant outdoor gym. At 2-3 hours a day including a
Bakkie trip to the rubbish dump I should get it tamed by winter. I used
to have some help but they have become too expensive & troublesome.
Fortunately that still leaves time for some photography!

In the example I described, the idiot using a drone, chose to do so on a

How he only lost it in the reservoir was a mystery.

Aside: The last meeting I attended was a competition. Within a few images it
was clear the judge had an eyesight issue, as he dismissed an excellent

They're not all of that caliber.

The club has a quarterly print competition where you can submit two B
prints and two color prints. Usually some well known local photographer
is invited to be the judge.

It's fun to watch them go through the prints to see at what point the
"judge" finally realize they can't give every entry a '9' (out of 10
possible).

Since the prints are not randomized before displaying them to the
"judge", it's best to get to the meeting early when there's a print
competition, so yours can be in the first dozen or so shown.

He probably asked.

He did acknowledge the general FAA regulation that drones cannot be
operated beyond line of sight of the operator, but I couldn't determine
if that acknowledgement included a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" or not.

My reservations regarding drones is entirely concerning irresponsible
operators. There have already been instances where careless operators
have injured bystanders on the ground. Luckily, no fatalities.

Without wanting to get political, you have a bigger worry with firearms
in your country. Worry about real problems.

But, I think it's only a matter of time before some idiot flies one
into the path of a commercial aircraft & causes a crash.

This is hysteria at it's finest. A goose getting sucked into an engine
will do more damage than a drone, even an S1000 series.

This can be said of many things, both benign and dangerous.

Great photography club, where you get this level of speaker.

I like the photos provided by drones, but regret not buying some months
 ago.
Due to the idiots which seem to use 90% of them locally, I'm expecting a
 ban
or strict restrictions to be imposed very soon on drone usage. All this
could have been sorted at point of sale, with dealers not selling to
 people
too stupid to use them safely. Having said that, I wouldn't have missed
 for
the world the reaction from the twerp who ditched his in a reservoir,
 which
I had the pleasure of watching late last year.

safeguard our freedom from these people, we must give up our freedom to use it

Great photography club, where you get this level of speaker.

I like the photos provided by drones, but regret not buying some months ago.
Due to the idiots which seem to use 90% of them locally, I'm expecting a ban
or strict restrictions to be imposed very soon on drone usage. All this
could have been sorted at point of sale, with dealers not selling to people
too stupid to use them safely. Having said that, I wouldn't have missed for

Good comparison. A quotation from the 2013 PDML book seems apropos:

Lik's photographs, like Kinkade's paintings, are purchased because

I think it's the same Color Run that blocked off the streets around the
corner from my house and sent out fliers advising all the neighbors to
stay indoors lock-up inside anything that might be damaged by chalk dust.

IIRC, they specifically mentioned sensitive electronic devices like
cameras and parked automobiles might be at risk of damage.

Yet another case where a company uses photographer's photo
without permission.

There was an interesting story unrolling, where a photographer
allowed the company (The Color Run) to use his photograph(s?) on
their facebook, just to find later that they used his photo in an
international advertisement campaign (including Sports Authority
store chain). ... So, he demanded the compensation... In return,
the company decided to sue the photographer for using its name
and registered marks...

Here is the story.
http://petapixel.com/2014/02/14/color-run-sues-photog-demanding-payment-widely-distributed-photo/

Having read all of this, I think:
1. The Color Run company is using a bad practice in the way how
they used photos without permission. Their response to the demand
of compensation is also weird. Being in the advertisement
business, they should know the laws. It is the case where the
company should be punished monetarily for such action.

2. Some demands of the photographer appear rather strange
(immature?). While in my opinion his demands are formulated so
that they leave the room for negotiation and for a step back,
some of the demands (request for the status, etc.) just don't
make much sense to me. Posting his status on FB about being
employed by the company is also strange. (I wonder if it all
comes from the percieved fame of being associated with the
company.)

While I was going to post this to PDML (since Saturday), there
was an update on the photographer's blog that an agreement was
reached and the company will be paying him...

While looking to find out what the powder was, I found that there are
several competing organizations hosting these events. Looks like
Raleigh is going to have at least three of them in this coming year.
Don't know how many of them will end up coming into my neighborhood
blocking off streets.

I did find out that the powder is food grade corn starch dyed with
food coloring. Probably won't hurt you if you get it on your skin, but
I'm not so sanguine about getting it in your eyes or breathing it in.

The most interesting thing I found out about them is their corporate
sponsor is a brand of laundry additive for removing stains.

out of proportion.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/alohadave/sets/72157630592112576/

Stay upwind and stay out the color bombs, and you will be fine. I had
dust on my gear and clothes, and what little didn't brush off my
clothes, came out in the wash no problem. I even changed lenses while
shooting.

The company that did the one I attended uses mall parking lots and
fairgrounds and other fairly open spaces. They didn't close off any
streets, just the mall parking lot before it opened on a Sunday
morning.

I was referring to the litigation, not the event itself.

In one of those Incredible Race episodes, the contestants were involved in

Probably the idea for the Colo(u)r Run came from there.

Yet another case where a company uses photographer's photo without
 permission.

There was an interesting story unrolling, where a photographer allowed
the company (The Color Run) to use his photograph(s?) on their facebook,
just to find later that they used his photo in an international
advertisement campaign (including Sports Authority store chain).
 ...
 So, he demanded the compensation...
In return, the company decided to sue the photographer for using its
 name and registered marks...

 Here is the story.

Having read all of this, I think:
 1. The Color Run company is using a bad practice in the way how they used
photos without permission. Their response to the demand of compensation
is also weird. Being in the advertisement business, they should know
the laws. It is the case where the company should be punished
 monetarily for such action.

 2. Some demands of the photographer appear rather strange (immature?).
While in my opinion his demands are formulated so that they leave
the room for negotiation and for a step back, some of the demands
(request for the status, etc.) just don't make much sense to me.
Posting his status on FB about being employed by the company is
also strange. (I wonder if it all comes from the percieved fame of
 being associated with the company.)

While I was going to post this to PDML (since Saturday),
there was an update on the photographer's blog that an agreement was
reached and the company will be paying him...

Re: A photographer whose work is Blowing Me Away...

2012-07-14 Thread P. J. Alling
The individual links don't work in Firefox but I was able to visit her
galleries. They're good but then the images get old, unfortunately
quite quickly, for me at least. The few hyper realistic images were
better than the dreamy impressionistic stuff, but I doubt that the woman
in the People gallery thanked her.

Greetings PDMLers,
I just discovered a photographer on 1x.com that is absolutely Blowing

Ursula I Abresch

First, I love her ability to create amazingly striking images from
ordinary objects. A few examples:
Chalk: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/3885/8896/
Drinking straws: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2036/8896/
Rust: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2048/8896/
A fork: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/2010/8896/
The ability to see and compose outstanding images in the face of the
ordinary is one of the things that I feel I need to develop *most*
in myself.

What follows may not be everyone's cup o' tea but I *love* it. There
are very few of these sort of images that I would not like to have as
*large* prints on my walls. If you do not care for abstracts or the
work of The Impressionists, go no further.

I'm very taken by her motion blur work, either as an individual technique:
Aspens at Night: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14880/8896/
Spring Aspen II: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14707/8896/
Jerrylandia: http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14227/8896/

But I'm especially turned on by her *combination* of blending blur/OOF
with straight shots:
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14709/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14881/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14883/8896/
http://ursula.1x.com/photo/14533/8896/
This is the result of (I have to believe) a mostly post-processing
technique (two or more layers?), and I'm not sure if her blurred shots
are taken in camera or done from sharp images in Photoshop but just
seeing thos images, and guessing at how they were done, I've got a
bunch of ideas that I'm itching to try.

You can get lost in her portfolio which shows off her very broad
range: http://ursula.1x.com/gallery/8896 including more straight
photography.
I hope you find viewing her work as pleasurable and edifying an
experience as I am.

Ursula I Abresch explains her technique (for the image linked above,
if not many others)...

No. It is making two images in camera (that is, if you have a camera
that allows you to do so). You set the camera to double (or more
exposures if you wish), then make the two images and they're combined
in camera into one file. You could also do it in PS, however, I prefer
the more natural results you get doing it in camera. PS is a bit too
controlled an environment for my taste, in general. Fernand calls it
the defocusing technique. I started doing this well before coming to
1X and meeting Fernand, based on work by Freeman Patterson. I believe
there are probably a number of names for this technique.

That blows me away even more, that she is doing it in camera.

Lovely. They have an element of the abstract but a clear subject. I
understand her point about not using PS. For some photographer, the
discipline of a particular procedure grounds their work in some ways
and lets their imagination work in other ways.

Very interesting stuff. I'd suggest highly manipulated images; more
digital art than photography, though I'm not complaining.

But the viewing experience was marred by 1x.com's atrocious

in comparison. None of your links produced any images for me, so like

Glad to hear that, Bruce!
Since she mentions him and his book in her explanation of how she did

I snagged a decently priced copy of Photo Impressionism and the

and today ordered a cheap copy of his Photography and the Art of
Seeing.

I've also only now discovered that you can do Multiple Exposure (in
camera) on a lot of Pentax models, including (naturally) the K-5. I'm
still not convinced that I will like the results as much as I would
like the control of doing it in post (layers) but we'll see.

I guess we'll just have to disagree.
I don't see how the judges could have been certain that the image was staged
when they viewed it. You couldn't expect them to have known about that
particular scene. It could have been possible that the scene was captured
remotely in the wild and the photographer did have a bogus story about all
the time spend tracking wolves.

I'm not putting down the images, I'm putting down the people running the
contest.

Their biggest fault is that they didn't initially question his veracity
when
he claimed the image was taken in the wild after months of patient
tracking

of the subject. Competition rules prohibit the use of animal models.

The issue is recounted here -
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jan/20/wolf-wildlife-photographer-award-stripped

'The organisers were alerted to suspicions about the image by Spanish
photographers who recognised the wolf and the location as the Ca?ada Real
wildlife park. Wolf experts also questioned why the wolf would jump the
gate

when a wild animal was more likely to squeeze between the bars.'

Right, I'm well familiar with all the reasons his photo was disqualified.

But those reasons were all evident in the photo *before* they awarded
him the prize. They didn't consider them suspicious until another
entrant complained.

Taking the prize back after the fact doesn't undo the incompetence of
awarding him the prize in the first place.

I don't see how the judges could have been certain that the image was staged
when they viewed it. You couldn't expect them to have known about that
particular scene. It could have been possible that the scene was captured
remotely in the wild and the photographer did have a bogus story about all
the time spend tracking wolves.

I agree. Unlike Photoshop cheating, there's simply no way for a
contest judge to determine when this kind of cheating has been done.
Even good Photoshop work would be almost impossible to detect on a
routine basis. The judges did all that was humanly possible on first
evaluation and responded ethically when the cheating was pointed out.
One can't expect any more than that.

But I'm not sure about that Newfie language lesson. I understood the
part about How's your mother and father ... I'm going downtown, but
they kinda glossed over the part about eating a boiled salted moose with
gravy.

As far as I know, if you refuse the cancer scan, you can't opt for the
groping. It's an arbitrarily random decision. If you refuse the
scan, they won't let you through.

Australia's doing it too :(  Mandatory porn-scan in the cancer machine and if
you refuse the scan you're refused entry.  At least the TSA lets you opt for

With your funny accent they probably figured you were from Cape
Breton, Newfoundland or some place like that.

I've run the Casino Niagara Marathon, which starts in Buffalo,
crosses the Peace Bridge into Canada and ends in Niagara Falls,
Ontario. Even post-9/11 it was remarkably little hassle (even for a
green card-holder like me): Just show your ID when picking up your
race packet at registration and off you go.

I expected your Utube offering to be something like this:

No, Mark doesn't talk like that but Newfies do.

That was 1981. The paranoia that has taken over the USA has been
enforced on Canada Customs because if we don't conform with their rules,
they make travelling to their country as unpleasant as possible.
