Re: OT - Photographer selling gear
I know exactly how he feels. My large un-tamed tropical garden is presenting many challenges. I will be trying to remain positive by treating it as a giant outdoor gym. At 2-3 hours a day including a Bakkie trip to the rubbish dump I should get it tamed by winter. I used to have some help but they have become too expensive & troublesome. Fortunately that still leaves time for some photography! The club has a quarterly print competition where you can submit two B prints and two color prints. Usually some well known local photographer is invited to be the judge. It's fun to watch them go through the prints to see at what point the "judge" finally realize they can't give every entry a '9' (out of 10 possible). Since the prints are not randomized before displaying them to the "judge", it's best to get to the meeting early when there's a print competition, so yours can be in the first dozen or so shown. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. He did acknowledge the general FAA regulation that drones cannot be operated beyond line of sight of the operator, but I couldn't determine if that acknowledgement included a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" or not. My reservations regarding drones is entirely concerning irresponsible operators. There have already been instances where careless operators have injured bystanders on the ground. There was an interesting story unrolling, where a photographer allowed the company (The Color Run) to use his photograph(s?) on their facebook, just to find later that they used his photo in an international advertisement campaign (including Sports Authority store chain). ... So, he demanded the compensation... In return, the company decided to sue the photographer for using its name and registered marks... Here is the story. http://petapixel.com/2014/02/14/color-run-sues-photog-demanding-payment-widely-distributed-photo/ Having read all of this, I think: 1. The Color Run company is using a bad practice in the way how they used photos without permission. Their response to the demand of compensation is also weird. Being in the advertisement business, they should know the laws. It is the case where the company should be punished monetarily for such action. 2. Some demands of the photographer appear rather strange (immature?). While in my opinion his demands are formulated so that they leave the room for negotiation and for a step back, some of the demands (request for the status, etc.) just don't make much sense to me. Posting his status on FB about being employed by the company is also strange. (I wonder if it all comes from the percieved fame of being associated with the company.) While I was going to post this to PDML (since Saturday), there was an update on the photographer's blog that an agreement was reached and the company will be paying him... I shot one a year and a half ago. You guys are really blowing this out of proportion. http://www.flickr.com/photos/alohadave/sets/72157630592112576/ Stay upwind and stay out the color bombs, and you will be fine. I had dust on my gear and clothes, and what little didn't brush off my clothes, came out in the wash no problem. I even changed lenses while shooting. The company that did the one I attended uses mall parking lots and fairgrounds and other fairly open spaces. They didn't close off any streets, just the mall parking lot before it opened on a Sunday morning. Re: A photographer whose work is Blowing Me Away...
From: Darren Addy http://1x.com/photo/19074 Ursula I Abresch explains her technique (for the image linked above, if not many others)... No. It is making two images in camera (that is, if you have a camera that allows you to do so). You set the camera to double (or more exposures if you wish), then make the two images and they're combined in camera into one file. You could also do it in PS, however, I prefer the more natural results you get doing it in camera. PS is a bit too controlled an environment for my taste, in general. Fernand calls it the defocusing technique. I started doing this well before coming to 1X and meeting Fernand, based on work by Freeman Patterson. I believe there are probably a number of names for this technique. That blows me away even more, that she is doing it in camera. Sounds like Tony Sweet. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Lovely. They have an element of the abstract but a clear subject. I understand her point about not using PS. Re: A photographer whose work is Blowing Me Away...
Very interesting stuff. I'd suggest highly manipulated images; more digital art than photography, though I'm not complaining. But the viewing experience was marred by 1x.com's atrocious user-interface which manages to make 500px and Flickr look really good in comparison. None of your links produced any images for me, so like Dan, I had to go to the Gallery and navigate from there as best I could. http://1x.com/photo/19074 Ursula I Abresch explains her technique (for the image linked above, if not many others)... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: A photographer whose work is Blowing Me Away...
Glad to hear that, Bruce! Since she mentions him and his book in her explanation of how she did a couple of her shots. For that reason I snagged a decently priced copy of Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image: An Imagination Workshop for Photographers yesterday and today ordered a cheap copy of his Photography and the Art of Seeing. I've also only now discovered that you can do Multiple Exposure (in camera) on a lot of Pentax models, including (naturally) the K-5. I'm still not convinced that I will like the results as much as I would like the control of doing it in post (layers) but we'll see. I guess we'll just have to disagree. I don't see how the judges could have been certain that the image was staged when they viewed it. You couldn't expect them to have known about that particular scene. It could have been possible that the scene was captured remotely in the wild and the photographer did have a bogus story about all the time spend tracking wolves. Unlike Photoshop cheating, there's simply no way for a contest judge to determine when this kind of cheating has been done. Even good Photoshop work would be almost impossible to detect on a routine basis. The judges did all that was humanly possible on first evaluation and responded ethically when the cheating was pointed out. Yeah - I found the website to be annoying as well. But I found the photos to be inspiring. I guess given the choice between an awkward website with fine content, and a graceful website with fluff, I'll go for the fine content. I'm probably making a break form the law of averages on that, but it is worth it. There are some really great photos in the online exhibit. You are right about the composition and incorporation of motion in the many of the shots. This is always amazing, the images are transparencies mounted on 16x20 lightboxes. A stunning way to view photography. To my eye, this year is better than most in the past. Previously, the chosen images always seemed to my eye to be 'cool pictures of animals.' And they inevitably were. For 2012, my first impression is that they are more 'visually abstract' or compositionally creative, or whatever. Call it 'arty' but they seem to be trying for more than they have in the past. The BW is especially good, though all are digital, not Tri-X. If you are in the area, it is worth the $12 admission price. Call me ahead of time, and I can get you in free on my membership. I think it's the same contest that had all the bullshit about whether the photo of a wolf jumping over a gate was a captive animal or not. The 'Wildlife Photographer of the Year' contest is perhaps the most widely known/recognized contest of its type. And they did disqualify a winning photographer last year for falsely claiming his winning image was not staged. I don't see that as being a reason to put down the images they select as the best. From: knarftheria...@gmail.com I expected your Utube offering to be something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqLuIXwsLDwfeature=youtube_gdata_player No, Mark doesn't talk like that but Newfies do. I just remembered the line about a very pronounced accent and that was the only clip I could find. But I'm not sure about that Newfie language lesson.
