Re: sigma 18-50 f2.8

2009-02-19 Thread Francis

My brother has one of those and I have used it a fair amount.
Seems to have nice glass (these is something about the way it renders
bokha that looks different then Pentax, but not in a bad way). Build is
nice and solid (it's heavy, but that's not surprising). The AF sucks on
my DS, totally sluggish, but isn't bad (though slower then an 18-55) on
a K10. Not having manual override (or what ever that is called) on the
AF is a drag but can be lived with.
The one my brother has seems to have a slight back focus problem but
he hasn't done a conclusive test yet.

Macro is sweet (very handy to have good macro on a walk around lens).

Cheers,
Francis

I don't remember seeing much mention of this lens in the normal

faster than my 18-250.

HA! I appreciate your feelings for Sigma which you've expressed here
quite frequently. I've only owned one Sigma lens: the 300/4 AF, blah,
blah, blah macro and it was actually a fan-bloody-tastic lens. Except
for its lack of IS I'd say it was pretty close to my Canon 300/4 IS.

But my experience may be isolated since the lens I mentioned is not in
production any more and has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of

I've owned several Sigma's. The EX 10-20 was superb. The EX 50/2.8

I know that Sigma doesn't have a stellar reputation. The only one I
have is the 50-500 bigma. I came very close to getting a 30/1.4 but
it got damaged in shipment.

I have one of those lenses. It is quite a good zoom, well built and it
focuses really close. Nowadays it is one of my 3 most used lenses, being
the others the Pentax DA 50-135 2.8 and the Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8
Get sure it is the latest macro version with a 72mm filter ring. The
previous non macro version (67 mm. filter threads) is not as good as
the latest one. The only drawbacks of the 18-50 EX macro are, besides
not being a Pentax lens, distortion at 18 mm. (but all the lenses in the
same category show more or less the same distortion), and the absence of
SDM. As Adam wrote, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is also a good alternative in
this range. If I could afford one, I would buy a Pentax DA 16-50 2.8,
but I'd also keep this Sigma.

I meant to say absence of QSF, not absence of SDM. The lens uses
screwdriven AF, but I don't see that as a disadvantage. Damned acronyms.

Same difference in Sigma's case, you only get manual focus override
with HSM. Only Pentax makes the clutched QSF-capable screwdriver

I am using the older, non-macro on a DS (as in Dark Side). It's a

strong backlight.
The only thing I might miss is the HSM/whateversonic AF drive.

But I might be just lucky with my sample - I also have first hand

One systematic problem is that Sigma lenses often seem to have more edge

common tradeoffs to achieve lower price are more distortion, lower build
quality,
more vignetting, more corner softness, lower quality control, etc etc,
there
are lots of ways to make a lens cheaper...Thats why I kinda have a
fondness for
the old days, when there was OEM, all as good as possible and third
party, all
cheaper and not as good. At least you knew what you were getting. Now
you have
pro level third parties all mixed in with consumer OEMs and the brand
name doesnt
mean as much.

While Pentax sleeps, Sigma is bringing out an attractive line of lenses

If Sigma were to bring out a high-quality 50-150/200 f2.8 or 4.0
