RE: This Is London
From: Subject: This Is London I spent the afternoon up west. As the daylight faded and the lights came on there was a flurry of snow. Really, if you think it makes a difference, go hard, but you are imagining it. I spent a very long time running these machines. I know how photo lab stuff works. William Robb I agree with William. Maybe I'm just lucky but my local Costco does a fantastic job of 12 x 18 prints. I send them highest resolution jpegs exported from Lightroom with the sRGB workspace. The guys in the store are mostly ex employees of the old London pro labs which shut down because of the move to digital and they have a good eye - especially for black and white. They always say that they look forward to my prints (and those of other local enthusiasts who also use them) coming in because it's much more interesting than the 200 6 x 4 family holiday snaps which are their bread and butter. They show me the prints and will always reprint them at no charge in the rare event that I'm not happy with the outcome. If they're not too busy we have a good chat as well. I usually try and get them to the store when they're not too busy. I upload them overnight during the week and they're ready for collection by lunch time. And they only charge £1.99 per print. The gotchas I've learned about costco lightroom printing.
From: Larry Colen If you just upload a photo costco will crop it so that it fills the frame rather than prints all of the photo. The way I found to prevent that is to use the print menu and set up the page configuration for the right sized paper and let lightroom add the requisite borders. I always put please don't crop or zoom in the comments field. That works at my local Costco. But, as I said in an earlier post, I've got to know the guys in the photo department and they know what I want. I don't know how approachable yours would be, but it's worth chatting them up. If I want the image to be a specific size I put a border on it, using Canvas Size in Photoshop - I put a bit of white space around it and add a coloured border to the final size. That way they have to print it just as you send it to them - but of course it only works with larger prints. There's an example here (I've also put a thin line round the image picking out the blue from the dress): http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/20080627IMGP9830-Edit.jpg This is a cut down version for demo purposes - the original was 4Mb and was printed on 18x12. For mounting I cut a matte to show white space the same width as the distance of the thin line from the image. There's a Lightroom plugin called Mogrify which can add borders amongst lots of other things - worth a look: http://www.photographers-toolbox.com/products/lr2mogrify.php Lightroom print module will write the jpeg files to a directory and name all of the files based on that directory. Unfortunately, the original filename is lost, so even though costco will print the filename on the back, it does little good for tracking down the original raw file. Unfortunately lightroom export print won't add the borders. I think that you can go and wrestle with the cropping on the costco site if you export the files. In Lightroom Export in File Naming you can select filename - it saves the jpeg with the original filename. More on K7 electronic tilt feature
Took the following with the Electronic Level showing the camera to be level: http://mitch.myzen.co.uk/Levels/K7level1.jpg Just in case the words British Made are not reassuring enough for the discerning reader, I turned the spirit level through 180 degrees and took this one: http://mitch.myzen.co.uk/Levels/K7level2.jpg Any inaccuracies in the spirit level are insignificant. As you can see, it's miles out (1.06 degrees, the Lightroom straighten tool says, which ties in with what Ralf said). RE: How precise is your K-7's spirit level?
Mine's a long way out It's obvious when looking through the viewfinder or in live view with the grid turned on, but here's a demo with a good quality spirit level (Electronic level says level): http://mitch.myzen.co.uk/Levels/K7level1.jpg And spirit level turned through 180 degrees to compensate for any inaccuracie: http://mitch.myzen.co.uk/Levels/K7level2.jpg I don't want to bang on about it, but thought you'd like to see these (which I posted in the other thread on this subject). I didn't buy the K7 for this feature (didn't even know about it until I read the manual) and I'll stop using the feature (or compensate like William says). IF it has a function like this, it should be accurate. At least as accurate as naked eye. K-7 is a serious tool, not a toy and inaccurate functions are decreasing it's creditability. For an average person the level is real low-tech and so they think: hey, if even the god damn level isn't accurate, there's no sense to talk about the complex functions like image processing. I suspect that the level is more accurate than many of the people who are presuming it is wrong are giving it credit for. Checking it by putting a cheap harware store level across the hot shoe, for example, is not going to give an especially accurate assessment. The level on my camera is bang on the money, as measured by a $50.00 contractor grade precision 12 torpedo level. What I found though, was that I was not able to directly check the level, I had to check it somewhat indirectly to get an accurate reading. If the level is out by a dit or two, it isn't the end of the world, just use the dit that is lit when level as the aim point. Or, you can bitch and whine on the internet if that is what floats your boat, but it isn't as constructive. RE: GESO - first K7 pics
Hi Rick Early days yet. I'm off to Guernsey for a couple of weeks break so will give it a good workout. I decided to speed up the buying decision because my K10 is at the menders having its AF-S/AF-C problem fixed (new switch assembly required, GBP 87 the poorer) and I thought it might not be ready in time for my hols (it won't be). Had the option of using my Ist*D as a backup, but decided to take the plunge... For the backlit shots I used matrix metering and overexposed by a stop. I should think about using spot metering for these situations, but old habits from my MX manual days die hard! I'll keep you informed. GESO Fortress Guernsey
I'm on holiday in Guernsey - the home of my wife Karin. Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands (the other main ones are Jersey, Alderney and Sark). They've been part of the British Isles since the Norman Conquest (so not very long really!) and are still Crown Dependencies, albeit with a level of independence and tax haven status... Guernsey is only 9 miles by 5 miles and is an intriguing mix of English and French. English is the main language (although many of the older people speak the Guernsey patois which is a combination of Norman French, modern French and English), the pound is the currency and they drive on the right side of the road (i.e. the left). The names of the parishes and the street names are mostly French in origin. The threat of invasion has always been taken very seriously as the islands are much nearer to France than to England. The GESO here shows some of the defences - including those built by the Germans in WW2. The Channel Isles were the only bit of the British Isles to be occupied by Germany in WW2 (there's a famous propaganda picture of German troops marching outside Lloyds bank in St Peter Port, Guernsey's town). Karin's parents were in Guernsey during the occupation and her mother is really good at telling the fascinating stories from that time. RE: First K-7 woes
Hi Boris 1. Shot today at dusk. Saw lots of magenta. Is it because I am using LR 2.4 that hasn't yet been made fully compatible with K-7 PEFs? Should I switch to DNG for time being? Is my camera defective? I've not seen this. I've been using LR2 for the 1st time on my sister in law's PC while on holiday - although I am using DNG because I've still got LR1 at home (although I will certainly upgrade soon!). Also her monitor is not calibrated at all so I might find that everything's wrong when I try it at home! 2. Matrix metering seems to underexpose by at least 1Ev. Is it normal? I reckon I can dial +1Ev correction and still have 4Ev to play with in plus department, but I'd rather it shot proper. My K10D almost never gave me such problems. No problem here. In fact I often have to tweak my K10D's shots up by 1/2 to 2/3 a stop so the K7 seems better. Generally the only ones I've had to push have been those with backlighting and normally I would do that in camera - I just forget sometimes. 3. In general, most of few tens of pics I took during last two days demanded WB correction. Usually LR auto would cure it, but I'd hate to revert to the workflow I had with *istD where I had first of all to correct the white balance. I thought that since introduction of K10D the problem was resolved for good. I mean daylight, not tungsten light. I've not had to touch WB when shooting in daylight. I have a suspicion that shots are a little warmer than the K10D, but I think I like this. The Fortress Guernsey GESO I just posted had no WB correction, mainly just tone curves and I messed around with selective exposure in the sky for the wider Fort Grey shot. Do you think any of those seem to exhibit the characteristics you see? Do you have any issues such as this consistently? Or perhaps I ought to start bugging my local service? Hmmm. Based on my experience, looks like a local problem to me I'm afraid... Thanks Bob It's partly because stone is more durable (they say that Guernsey is made up of some of the Earth's oldest rocks), but also partly because of the care that's taken looking after and renovating the 18th century and earlier stuff. RE: PDML (UK) London September meet
Hi John I'd love to meet up. Weekends only for me I'm afraid - I can do Sat and Sun 12 13. The Greenwich / Blackheath areas are fine for me - my son lives across the river on the Isle of Dogs so I'll be able to crash out there if necessary... Just in case things shift around, I'm also available on 19th and 20th. Chris PS What's the folk gig? -Original Message- From: John Francis [mailto:jo...@panix.com] Sent: 03 September 2009 02:27 To: Cotty; AlunFoto; mike wilson; Bob W; Chris Mitchell Cc: PDML@pdml.net Subject: PDML (UK) London September meet My plans are now getting settled a little more. I land on the 11th, but that day's pretty much taken up with travel (and getting set up with UK phone internet access). Apart from that I have no firm commitments until the 19th (when I need to be back at the house in the evening to hand over to my sister-in-law), although I'd prefer to leave the evening of the 18th free (there's a folk gig I'd like to see). After that I'm basically unavailable. I'm staying in Kent, so somewhere in the Blackheath/Greenwich area might be good (and, of course, Bob knows all the pubs!). RE: Jalbum Photo Album Generator?
There are a few of us on the list who use Jalbum and we've had a few threads on its use. I use it for all my galleries and find it really flexible, but relatively straightforward to use. It's particularly good for the purpose you mentioned, Marnie, where you want to use your own web space and not be tied to the layout you get with Flickr and the like. The built-in FTP site manager is excellent - you can add directories to your gallery and the site manager sorts out and uploads the new bits for you. It's also easy to create a free-standing one-off gallery that isn't linked to anything else - but with the same theme. I use the Chameleon scheme (also used for the PUG I think) and find it a good compromise between simplicity and flexibility. It's also not Flash... RE: Coming to Chicago for PDML Exhibit
Hi Christine Karin and I are seriously thinking about coming. Our first time to the USA! We'll stay in a hotel and we'd be glad of any info you're able to give us. The evolving plan is that we'll stay in Chicago for the exhibition and photo walk and perhaps stay for another week for scenery / walking. Any recommendations as to where to go and a nice place to stay for scenery / walking in the Chicago / lakes area? Also, what's the weather like at that time of year? If I could get some idea of who *might* be coming, I might be able to help with places to stay. For example, my parents have a back yard, so if some folks were on a budget, maybe they'd be willing bring a tent and billet in my parents' backyard--though I do have to ask my parents about this :-), but I don't think it will be that much of a problem--I hope. Also, if I can get my living room cleared of book piles, I could purchase another large air mattresses (Darrel I slept on one at GFM, and they are really comfortable.) We have 1, which could be put to use, and I'd be willing to get another one. Anyway, if you post back, I'll start a list of those folks seriously considering coming, and I'll try to help out. 2) In a week or so, I'll post a list of hotels/motels folks might consider staying at. I promise to be budget-aware when compiling the list. 3) Awhile back I suggested the following: Folks fly in Thurs or Friday; attend exhibit opening reception Fri night; Photowalk all day Sat with pizza party/dinner Sat night; How does this sound to folks? The bigger problem will be choosing a photowalk spot or (spots) lol--so many possibilities. If you want to offer suggestions please do. I'm going to do some serious thinking on this and post some possibilities soon. Anyway that's a start. I hope it helps. My band, Fat Freddy's Cat on another rooftop; this time at the Open University in Milton Keynes. Taken with a K7 - interval shooting, 1 shot every 3 seconds. Looped and mixed with sound using MS Movie Maker. The song is from a live Buddy Holly 50th anniversary gig we did earlier in the year. Not a great work of art, but fun to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gucvm5-QbSI Would have been lees wear and tear on the K7 if we'd shot video and grabbed frames I guess, but we needed a high resolution shot for publicity purposes: http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/ffc/RooftopOU/slides/_IGP0967.html Chris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gucvm5-QbSI Fun stuff. Next time (if there is a next time) I'd suggest picking a white balance setting and locking it down... I notice that the K7 was making different choices with almost every photo. -Charles Hi Charles. Actually, the reason WB (and exposure) are all over the place is that it's a mixture of the candidate photos for our portfolio (i.e. I've colour balanced and adjusted exposure) and the rest which flick through OK but don't stand closer inspection. These I didn't correct at all. I left them as they were as I thought it would give an old film type of look (where on old silent films you get the odd frame that's scratched or over exposed). It was a bit of a one-off, but if we ever do it again we'll take your comments into account (but, of course we'll probably use the K7 video capability!). Thanks Christine. Hi Chris: Great fun! Enjoyed the music as well. Are you the 2nd on the right playing guitar? Yes, that's me Anyway, The PDML exhibit will be at Dank Haus, which you already know, but Dank Haus is in the neighborhood Lincoln Square, and also in Lincoln Square is the *Old Town School of Folk Music.* We'll have to see what their concert schedule is like around the time of your possible visit; you might want to go to one of their concerts. Here's the link to the school: http://www.oldtownschool.org/ Concert sked for Oct, Nov, Dec is up, but we'll have to wait a bit for May. They have some good acts, so I'll look out for that I took fiddle one at the Old Town, but had a hell of a time learning by ear, so I didn't go on to Fiddle Two, and instead bought a bunch of sheet music, and learned some tunes on my own. I'm really not very good, though when in practice I can tease out a nice waltz. The Emporium Bar and the Post Office (not shown) struggle to keep going. It is in Northern Northern California. I stopped by at the end of my Oregon/Washington trip, in the valley where my father grew up, and again took some photos. I have shown a few before on list. The middle building is my great grandfather's store. He and my other great grandfather both came to CA for the Gold Rush.
