wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread jens
Dear PDML members
Which flash unit should I get for my K10D which will also be right for a
K20D? I never realy started getting unists for other than TTL, which
doesn't work with the new Pentax models.

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread jens
Thanks James and Bob
Power is not the main issue, sinsce I own two Metz 60 units for
professional work. But I need a nice flash for casual shooting, when
there's not a ot of time for experiementing.

i THINK I'll give the af540 fgz AND THE meTZ 58 A CLOSER LOOK :-).

BEST REGARDS

JENS

Jens, The 540FGZ works fine, but it is the most expensive flash I own.

The 200 is the baby with no twist or tilt and limited functions.
The 360 is middle of the road with all functions including but not
limited to High Speed Sync , Wireless and AF spot beam but only has a
 tilt head
The 540 is the most powerful one and can do everything the 360 can and
has a twist added to the head. It also accepts an external battery pack
and a pentax 5P sync cable with out the need for an adaptor.

I know of 3 3rd party flashes that use P-TTL and should work with the
 k20D
 the sigma DG500super
 mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital
 mecablitz 48 AF-1 digital.

I personally would like a very close look at the 58 AF-1. It has a
2ndary flash in the body of the unit for fill light as well as it's main
head that has twist and tilt.
Both Metz units has firmware upgradable via a usb cable and can be done
 by the user.

I own a 360FGZ. sometimes, is isn't powerfull enough for what I want,
untill I can afford a bigger unit, it will have to do.

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread jens
THANKS PAUL.
I know Pentax makes great quality flash units. I used to have the old AF
500 FTZ which is built like a tank and beautifully designed. Unfortunately
this is a ttl only unit. I'm supprised to hera about problems with the$
locking mechanism.

The Metz 58-1 costs appr. 40 USD less than the AF 540FGZ , but less
powerfull (only GN 42). In Germany the Metz is 280 Euro, the Pentax is 320
USD.

Regards
Jens

The Pentax AF 540 is great in terms of consistency and exposure. All
of its special functions, such as high speed synch and wireless, work
flawlessly. I've owned both it and the Sigma 500 (530) Super. The
Pentax 540 is vastly superior. It's perfectly mated to the cameras.
It's only weak point is its locking mechanism, but if you take care
in operating the clamp, it will be fine.

2008-07-02 Thread jens
Thanks Bob.
I think you're right. I use a Sigma 10-20mm. Only 4-5.6, but quite useable
and nice - rectiliniar. I own lots of lenses including the old Limited
ones - but I rarely use other lenses than this one, my Tamron 28-75mm and
my FA* 2.8 80-200mm and occationally for maacro my Tamron 2.5 90mm (MF).
Thesee four lenses cover in fact all my current needs for optics. :-).

Regards Jens

 Jens,
I agree with Mark here. It is a US$1,000+ lens in terms of quality
 and full frame coverage.
Mark can do a better job of comparing it to the DA16-45/2.8 which he uses.
I've resisted buying the new lens as I have the older one and am quite
 happy.
Price would be an issue as the new DA16-45/2.8 is $1,100+ over here at
 BH.
 More for you I suspect...
 Regards, Bob S.

Hard to say. I don't know that I'd *spend* that much money one one, but

few of them. My favorite is the FA* 2.8 80-200mm. I had it for years -

Re: PESO - Stars and Astronomers

2008-07-04 Thread jens
Interesting small series. I love the darkes of moons a lot.

Regards, Jens

The Howard Astronomical League had an outing last Wednesday night.
The first successful event in quite a while. We tried the previous
Saturday. I got there just in time for a really hard downpour.
Wednesday was really nice weather- warm, no dew, and no clouds. I got
some pictures of stars, and astronomers.
Canon 10D, Tokina 12-24mm f4 lens wide open, exposures from 1/8 to 56
 sec, ISO 100 to 400.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157594414463840/

Next time, I'll try making RAW, ISO 200 exposures, and bracket to
find where the noise starts. Got to remember the Nikonos (sp?)
viewfinder ( no optics, just a frame with a cold shoe I use for
aiming with a pin hole lens.) The camera viewfinder is pretty much
useless for stars. The Tokina lets me cheat- set the lens to infinity
and let depth of field do its magic.

[The moon pictures were made last year]

 Cheers
 Mike

 Well its happened again.

My Asian lilies are starting to flower, some yellow/whites and some
 reds are popping out now.

Took some photos Thursday, and just had a look at them.

I seem to have a problem photographing red flowers. The colours are
all muddled, subject is soft and blurry. Most of my red tulip shots
come out this way as well.

Now my orange tiger lilies look great as do my yellow and pink roses.

Am i doing something wrong, or is it red being a difficult colour.

Very true, Cooty.
So, Paul, why don't you just talk to him some day soon?

On 11/7/08, Paul Stenquist, discombobulated, unleashed:

This fellow lives down the street from me in an expensive house.
Don't know what he does. Apparently it pays rather well. But he does
sit crosslegged in his driveway and smoke cigarettes. Frequently.
I've tried to talk to him, but he doesn't speak English. I think he's
Korean, but I'm not sure. In any case we wave and smile every day.
We're pals.

After a small price drop I couldn't resist the new 55-300 any longer.
A very nice lens. Lots of plastic fantastic but it feels well build.
The lens doesn't creep like the 80-320. The 16-45 feels cheaper. Image
quality is very good. Corner sharpness could improve a little. The MTF
program line wants 5.6 @ 55mm [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL

[EMAIL PROTECTED] The results at these apertures are excellent and most
suprising 300 mm is very good at f8 even at 1.2 mm, it doubles as a
nice macro lens. Didn't try wide open. Sometimes a little CA and if
visible repairable in lightroom. Purple fringing is allmost non
existing. The 16-45 has much more CA and purple fringing problems.
It comes with a nice hood and pouch.

Funny numbers

2008-08-01 Thread Jens
Hello list.

As I started using my new K20D (man, is that nice), I put in a SD card
containing images made with my K10D.

I soon discovered that the K20D started numbering the files, using the first
available number, e.i. 6763, which was one higher than the latest K10D image.
So, the K20D never started with number 0001. Strange, isn't it??

Hello avid and Dario
Thanks - I guess I should have known. Now I have to do a little math every time
I want to know how many frames my camera took.
Well, I guess I'll have a new camera long before it's worn out. These cameras
will last for several hundred thousinds exposures, I guess.
My *ist D didn't even reach 100,000 frames before I got the K10D. However, I
have done appr. 4000 shots in less than one week now, with the K20D. That may
ammount to 200,000 in one year!

I am BTW selling mine, since I have the K10D as backup for the K20D, now.
I had my *ist D fixed for incorrect focusing. I believe I paid 300 USD for

If there's not too many dead pixels, use it as is.
Otherwise - you may cosider giveng me an offer :-)

Re: K20D raw files in ThumbsPlus

2008-08-03 Thread Jens
NOPE. I'e been using Phase One LE - until I got the K20D. Not supported by LE.
Now I use (a trial version, initially) Silkypix, which is made by the same
people who make the software, provided by Pentax for the digital cameras.
Silkypix is very clever, not too easy, but still very nice.
I blieve Phase One 4.1.1. supports K20D PEF's, unless you upgrade the firmware.
Alledgedly the new name Pentax - not Pentax Corporation is responsible for
some trouble, as far as Phase One is conserned.

Yep, I did. I tried different brands of software.
Blaze Gif Converter is available as a trial version (version 5.75). I ended
buying it (version 5.50) from a company that called it Good Gif. It says so on
the CD I got, but inside is still the Blaze software. This works really nice,
except that I cant get rid of the small Blaze logo in the upper left corner,
which is supposed to disappear, after licensing the sofftware. The Blze Gif
Converter also makes the HTML for your website.

Get back to me, if you cant't find it through Google, please.

I have also bought a licence for Blaze Media Pro, which does not work as well.
It does A LOT of movie and sound formats and conversions - and can in the end
also convert AVI movies to SWF (Flash).

Microsoft also has a Movie Maker, that can be used for making movies from
single images. (Comes with XP and Vista opereating systems). But I can't seem
to make it move fast enough - which is about 20 frames pr. second.

Take a look at my latest creation:

OT: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread Jens
Hello list
In my camera club we had a discussion:
What is monochrome? What's the official photographic definition?

It seems the original definition is about painting with only one colour. Black.
For instance - on white paper or canvas.

This gives me a problem: Black White - that's two colours. Or perhaps just
one: White, since black is not a colour. White is.

So, BW is paintning with to colours: Light and no light/light and darkness and
all shades in between.

So why is yellow and blue, or red and green etc. not acceptable within the
definition of monochrome? Or is it ?

The only way I seem to be able to understand the monochrome definition is this:

In monohrome photography we paint with light in the darkness. With white on
black. Or with white on any other background. So white on blue, white on green.
white on red etc.
Right?

Re: RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread Jens
Thanks Bob ans William.
Your opinions surely differ.
I think I'll go with Williams definition.
Because WHITE IS a color. Black is not.
I believe monochrome means painting with one colour - usually white, but it
could be any other colour.

The base on which I can paint is black, which is not a colour (absense of
light).

So, in monochrome, I can substitute White with any other colour, but the black
base is a MUST.

So, a picture, using blue ink on a yellow base is NOT monochrome, thats's two
colours.

Re: Re: RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-21 Thread Jens
Perhaps.
I have now come to the conclusion, that monochrome means One Colour.
That is blue in blue, green in green, red in red, gray in gray etc. Very dark
parts will seem like the chosen colour in the darkest version. Very bright may
seem white.

A few years ago monochrome pictures were NOT accepted many places, if ink other
than gray and black was used.

Today this has changed. You can print in shades of blue, red, green etc. and
still get the images accepted as monochrome. As long as there is no trace of
other colours in the image. That is if you tone an image sephia, the dark parts
should also appear brown, not black. The toning must be total.
Black and Sephia in one photograph makes it a colour photograph, since it has
two colours.

This has become an intresting thread.
I was just wondering. Many photographic societies have colour and

monochrome as categories for exibitions and contests.
I wanted to know if there is a gerally accepted definiton - and why.

Apparently there's no general rool, all could agree on.

I bet if Scott ran a Monochrome PUG, you would get some sort of

Same with detail and macro,

So, take away funeral, and detail.

Forget about cheese and animal.

 Self-portrait
 Bird
 Technical
 Marriage
 Birth
 Dark

 Smile
 Death
 Macro

I guess you are right, PJ.
But today very few people work with chemicals, although I know a few, that

I wonder if I can actually buy printing paper, toned in Sephia or blue?

Re: Re: hypothetical enablement

2008-08-23 Thread Jens
The choise would depend on what you plan to potograph. If you do a lot of
portraits and close-ups, the 77mm ist the better choise. If you do a lot of
landscape, you should go for the 31mm.

I certainly have used the 77mm the most. For portraits and flowers.
They are both fine lenses, but my need for a 31th is really limited, and after
all - a standard zoom - say 28-70mm will cover that angle quite well. For
portraits and close ups the hight quality of the 77mm will be graatly
appreciated.

I don't know what SP550 is. An Olympus camera?
For macro I use and old Tamrom SP 2.5 90mm. Its not auto focus, but who needs
AF for macro? (The later AF SP AF 2.5 90 mm is quite famous for it's sharpnes).
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bladt/272258624/

It's fine as long as you don't use direct flash, whish creates a blueish spots
in the centre of the images (I wonder why??).
You may get one for less than 100 USD on the used market.

Using a PC as monitor for K20D

So I want to use a PC as the monitor screen.
So, I can check the recordings for closed eyes etc, during the shoot.
Is this possible with K20D.

I know I have software, that allows my *istD to be managed from a PC . not
quite the same, But I thought there might be some kind of similarity here.

Answers are agreatly apprecieated.

I guess children here are very much like children everywhere else. Selfish, not
behaving very considerate, using bad language, noisy etc.

Nevertheless, a guy I know is doing 17000 school photografs every august. I
figure he must be making considrerately much more than my yearly salery - in
just two months - august and september. That's worth at least some trouble -

Will the *ist D software be able to manage my K20D?

Jens, my point is that every extra piece of equipment you bring onto
 the
jobsite has the potential to distract you from your job, and has the
potential to turn your work area into a circus.
We shoot about a dozen schools per year, none of our photographers has
 seen
the need to take an external monitor (laptop) along to the shoot.

If you are using a monitor as instant review you will have a time lag,
 I
don't know how long, between the time the picture is taken and the
 time it
 shows up on the monitor.
In this time lag, you could just take another shot or two.
After the image shows on the external, you have to take your eyes from
 the
camera to check the shot, see if it's good and then either let that
 student
 go, or take another shot.
Also, the screen just cannot be in view of the subject or they will
 start
mugging to see what sort of idiot expressions they can come up with,
 but it
also can't be in sight of the other students, for the same reason.
Meanwhile, you've taken your eye off the ball, which is the subject in
 front
of you. You don't have his/her attention, anymore.

School photography is a bit of a pressure cooker. Generally, you have
 a lot
of kids to shoot in not very much time, and you really need to crank
 them
through. Also, kids are a bit like puppies in that they are easily
distracted. If you aren't keeping them engaged, their little minds
 will
wander, which can be a bit of a disaster if you need to do another
 shot
because of closed eyes or bad expression.
I really think the camera review screen is your best bet here, just
 from
conversations I've had with our photographers and the very limited
experience I've had shooting school photos.

I'm not saying it isn't worth some trouble, I just can't help but
 think that
overall it really could be trouble, more trouble than it's worth.
I don't know if the istD software will manage the K20, but the K20
 does have
 it's own remote assistant software.

Anyway, if you decide to take a computer along, I'd be interested to
 know if
it was beneficial, or if you just turned it off as a failed
 experiment.

Re: Re: Using a PC as monitor for K20D

2009-04-10 Thread Jens
Good points, Luiz

I'm not sure how this is usually done. I'd prefere being alone waith each
student for a few minutes. The guy I know is telling me he is shooting one
class - 25 students - in just 15 minutes. I haven't seen his shots, but they
certainly made him rich :-)
If I can earn my yearly sallery in two months, I will have 8 months left to do
really nice, artistic shots elsewhere - and two months holliday with my family
;-)

I want to do school photography.
So I want to use a PC as the monitor screen.
So, I can check the recordings for closed eyes etc, during the

  Is this possible with K20D.

I know I have software, that allows my *istD to be managed from a

Enabelment - Chromakey

2009-04-10 Thread Jens
Hello list
I just wanted you to know, that I just bought a green background (chromagreen
backdrop) and a set of portable backdrop roll carriers.

I also got the Digital Anarchy Chromakey plug-in for Photoshop. So, I can
digitaly change the backgrounds for my portraits.
I just can't wait to try it out in practice :-)

I have done some experiments in Photoshop. I seems to be working very well. I
can make my own bacgrounds or buy stock photo backgrounds.
For this purpose some phototographers used Henzel Front Projection in the old
days (seventies). This was very expensive (like 1 USD). Today this can be
done on the computer for MUCH less :-)

OT: Cactus V4 - radio flash trigger - enablement

2010-01-22 Thread Jens
Hello list
I got a new Cactus V4 kit a couple of days ago.
Thaat is a radio flash trigger system.
Not a fancy one supporting TTL and stuff like that. Just a simple 16 channel
trigger.
I have tested it with a camera falsh as well as a studio flash (the needed
cords came in the box).
It simply works great - not at all like on some video test reviews.

Re: RE: Portrait software

2008-11-02 Thread Jens
Thanks again, John, Cotty and others.
I played around with the Pickture Package thing in Photoshop CS (7) and found
out:
1. I can make a Picture Pacage from all images in an image folder automatically.
2. I can change/customize the layout I wnat to use (combination of image sizes
in each package).
This is actually what I want. And I think it works great.
My only concern is, that the final package sizes seem to be unchangeable (?).
That's a pity, since I want to use the very same paper sizes, that my photo
dealer offers. I'll get my new EPSON printer next week (just a small, cheep
one). Perhaps I can find the rigt sizes for this.

It's called PrintSix.
It's not very expensive (60-160 USD) and comes in different versions.

Unfortunately I don't think this software can save your work as one JPG or TIF

Unfortunately, around where I live (Southeastern US - North

   there's one company that already has a lock on the business;
   already has
contracts with most of the school systems.

   They don't hire photographers.

Still, I'd take $11.00 an hour if they'd hire me for one of the
   nearby
J.C. Penny or Target studios, but I ain't going out on the road
   for that.

Moot anyway - they don't hire photographers.

Tell them you use Pentax. They'll hire you then.
Seriously, these places aren't in the business of churning out high
  art,
they really are there for the people who are in the market for what
  they are
  selling.
In order for them to be able to do what they do, every studio needs
  to be as
close to the same as possible with regards to lighing intensity and
  ratio.
This is the photographic equivalent of flipping burgers at
  McDonald's, and
the reasons for them doing what they do are exactly the same as the
  reasons
for why McD does it the way they do.
It's all about consistency of product.

  William Robb

I understand their business model, and with my experience, there's no
problem doing it their way ... there's no need for them to explain it,
just tell me how far you want the light what power setting you want
 me
 to use.

It's not rocket surgery - put this light over here 10' away at full
power using this soft box, that light at 12' 2/3 power, put the stool
 8
feet in front of the backdrop, use this camera, that f/stop, at
 whatever
 shutter speed.

Boom, boom, boom ... all done; How about some additional 5x7 prints?
They'd make a lovely gift for the grandparents.

Upselling. I understand it. I can follow the script. BTDT - GTTS.

They provide the equipment; they only have to tell me once how they
 want
me to shoot it. I understand what they want me to do, and I can do it
faster and churn out higher production than that untrained kid.

 No problem.

And, I'm willing to work for what they claim to be paying (at least in
the portrait studio). And, I'm more likely to show up for work every
 day.

BUT ... they *DO NOT* hire photographers. Experience is a
 disqualification.

Don't know why, but that's how it is.

Re: Re: Portrait software

2008-11-02 Thread Jens
Hello William
Over here, it's about the same. A few companies are dominating the business.
Still I think it's a free market. I can try to get a piece of the cake, if I
want.

I am current trying too start/run a business doing photography for planning
purposes - www.planfoto.dk. I know thee'll be times with very few or no orders,
so I'm looking for supplementary sources of income. Portraits could be one of
them. School portraits doesn't hjave to make you rich, but if you have enough
orders, the salery is quite good. One school class = 1-2 weeks salery. It's
like photographing in an assembly line.

A frind of mine once said: You can make a living from just about anything, if
you organize it well. I guess this goes for school photography too.
I actually know a photographer, who became quite whealty this way.

Regards
Jens

PS: Many photographing companies offer such packages for schools
  etc.
The price is often apr. 50 USD for on package wieh a number of
  portraits and one group portrait.

If marketed right this can be a brilliant source of income. If I
could fill my order book, I could make one months wages in just
  one
week. One school class is enough for one week salery.

This is worth taking into consideration, if you wnat to make a
  living
  from photography...:-)

Unfortunately, around where I live (Southeastern US - North
  Carolina)
there's one company that already has a lock on the business; already
  has
contracts with most of the school systems.

Another good line is CHURCHES - get the pastor on the hook with a
  really
LOW PRICE for a group portrait of the congregation then sell all the

  individual families portrait packages

They also have the contract for the Photo Studio at most WalMart,
  Target
   J.C. Penny stores.

  They don't hire photographers.

They take kids who want to be photographers, give them a quickie
  course -
Camera here, this light here, that light there, switches just so ...
  this
is how the background is hung - and pay them $11.00 an hour +
  reimbursement for expenses.

The reimbursement = $.35 a mile for the wear tear and fuel for
  their
personal vehicle + minimal per diem.

After a while the kids realize that when you add in all the unpaid
  travel
time they're making less than they could flippin' burgers at
  McDonalds, so
the company has to hire another batch of new kids.

Still, I'd take $11.00 an hour if they'd hire me for one of the
  nearby
J.C. Penny or Target studios, but I ain't going out on the road for
  that.

Moot anyway - they don't hire photographers.

Tell them you use Pentax. They'll hire you then.
Seriously, these places aren't in the business of churning out high
 art,
they really are there for the people who are in the market for what
 they are
 selling.
In order for them to be able to do what they do, every studio needs to
 be as
close to the same as possible with regards to lighing intensity and
 ratio.
This is the photographic equivalent of flipping burgers at McDonald's,
 and
the reasons for them doing what they do are exactly the same as the
 reasons
for why McD does it the way they do.
It's all about consistency of product.
