wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D
Thanks James and Bob Power is not the main issue, sinsce I own two Metz 60 units for professional work. But I need a nice flash for casual shooting, when there's not a ot of time for experiementing. i THINK I'll give the af540 fgz AND THE meTZ 58 A CLOSER LOOK :-). BEST REGARDS JENS Jens, The 540FGZ works fine, but it is the most expensive flash I own. Regards, Bob S. The 200 is the baby with no twist or tilt and limited functions. The 360 is middle of the road with all functions including but not limited to High Speed Sync , Wireless and AF spot beam but only has a tilt head The 540 is the most powerful one and can do everything the 360 can and has a twist added to the head. It also accepts an external battery pack and a pentax 5P sync cable with out the need for an adaptor. I know of 3 3rd party flashes that use P-TTL and should work with the k20D the sigma DG500super mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital mecablitz 48 AF-1 digital. I personally would like a very close look at the 58 AF-1. It has a 2ndary flash in the body of the unit for fill light as well as it's main head that has twist and tilt. Both Metz units has firmware upgradable via a usb cable and can be done by the user. I own a 360FGZ. sometimes, is isn't powerfull enough for what I want, untill I can afford a bigger unit, it will have to do. Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D
THANKS PAUL. I know Pentax makes great quality flash units. I used to have the old AF 500 FTZ which is built like a tank and beautifully designed. Unfortunately this is a ttl only unit. I'm supprised to hera about problems with the$ locking mechanism. The Metz 58-1 costs appr. 40 USD less than the AF 540FGZ , but less powerfull (only GN 42). In Germany the Metz is 280 Euro, the Pentax is 320 USD. Regards Jens The Pentax AF 540 is great in terms of consistency and exposure. All of its special functions, such as high speed synch and wireless, work flawlessly. I've owned both it and the Sigma 500 (530) Super. The Pentax 540 is vastly superior. It's perfectly mated to the cameras. It's only weak point is its locking mechanism, but if you take care in operating the clamp, it will be fine. Re: Hello list -and FA* 2.8 28-80mm AL
Thanks Bob. I think you're right. I use a Sigma 10-20mm. Only 4-5.6, but quite useable and nice - rectiliniar. I own lots of lenses including the old Limited ones - but I rarely use other lenses than this one, my Tamron 28-75mm and my FA* 2.8 80-200mm and occationally for maacro my Tamron 2.5 90mm (MF). Thesee four lenses cover in fact all my current needs for optics. :-). Regards Jens Jens, I agree with Mark here. It is a US$1,000+ lens in terms of quality and full frame coverage. Mark can do a better job of comparing it to the DA16-45/2.8 which he uses. I've resisted buying the new lens as I have the older one and am quite happy. Price would be an issue as the new DA16-45/2.8 is $1,100+ over here at BH. More for you I suspect... Regards, Bob S. Interesting small series. I love the darkes of moons a lot. Regards, Jens The Howard Astronomical League had an outing last Wednesday night. The first successful event in quite a while. We tried the previous Saturday. I got there just in time for a really hard downpour. Wednesday was really nice weather- warm, no dew, and no clouds. I got some pictures of stars, and astronomers. Canon 10D, Tokina 12-24mm f4 lens wide open, exposures from 1/8 to 56 sec, ISO 100 to 400. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157594414463840/ Next time, I'll try making RAW, ISO 200 exposures, and bracket to find where the noise starts. Got to remember the Nikonos (sp?) viewfinder ( no optics, just a frame with a cold shoe I use for aiming with a pin hole lens.) The camera viewfinder is pretty much useless for stars. The Tokina lets me cheat- set the lens to infinity and let depth of field do its magic. Funny numbers
Hello list. As I started using my new K20D (man, is that nice), I put in a SD card containing images made with my K10D. I soon discovered that the K20D started numbering the files, using the first available number, e.i. 6763, which was one higher than the latest K10D image. So, the K20D never started with number 0001. Hello avid and Dario Thanks - I guess I should have known. Now I have to do a little math every time I want to know how many frames my camera took. Well, I guess I'll have a new camera long before it's worn out. These cameras will last for several hundred thousinds exposures, I guess. My *ist D didn't even reach 100,000 frames before I got the K10D. However, I have done appr. 4000 shots in less than one week now, with the K20D. That may ammount to 200,000 in one year! Re: K20D raw files in ThumbsPlus
NOPE. I'e been using Phase One LE - until I got the K20D. Not supported by LE. Now I use (a trial version, initially) Silkypix, which is made by the same people who make the software, provided by Pentax for the digital cameras. Silkypix is very clever, not too easy, but still very nice. I blieve Phase One 4.1.1. supports K20D PEF's, unless you upgrade the firmware. OT: Define Monochrome
Hello list In my camera club we had a discussion: What is monochrome? What's the official photographic definition? It seems the original definition is about painting with only one colour. Black. For instance - on white paper or canvas. This gives me a problem: Black White - that's two colours. Or perhaps just one: White, since black is not a colour. White is. So, BW is paintning with to colours: Light and no light/light and darkness and all shades in between. So why is yellow and blue, or red and green etc. not acceptable within the definition of monochrome? Or is it ? The only way I seem to be able to understand the monochrome definition is this: In monohrome photography we paint with light in the darkness. With white on black. Or with white on any other background. So white on blue, white on green. white on red etc. Right? Re: RE: Define Monochrome
Thanks Bob ans William. Your opinions surely differ. I think I'll go with Williams definition. Because WHITE IS a color. Black is not. I believe monochrome means painting with one colour - usually white, but it could be any other colour. The base on which I can paint is black, which is not a colour (absense of light). So, in monochrome, I can substitute White with any other colour, but the black base is a MUST. So, a picture, using blue ink on a yellow base is NOT monochrome, thats's two colours. Perhaps. I have now come to the conclusion, that monochrome means One Colour. That is blue in blue, green in green, red in red, gray in gray etc. Very dark parts will seem like the chosen colour in the darkest version. Very bright may seem white. A few years ago monochrome pictures were NOT accepted many places, if ink other than gray and black was used. Today this has changed. You can print in shades of blue, red, green etc. and still get the images accepted as monochrome. As long as there is no trace of other colours in the image. That is if you tone an image sephia, the dark parts should also appear brown, not black. The toning must be total. Re: Re: hypothetical enablement
The choise would depend on what you plan to potograph. If you do a lot of portraits and close-ups, the 77mm ist the better choise. If you do a lot of landscape, you should go for the 31mm. I certainly have used the 77mm the most. For portraits and flowers. They are both fine lenses, but my need for a 31th is really limited, and after all - a standard zoom - say 28-70mm will cover that angle quite well. For portraits and close ups the hight quality of the 77mm will be graatly appreciated. Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. We shoot about a dozen schools per year, none of our photographers has seen the need to take an external monitor (laptop) along to the shoot. If you are using a monitor as instant review you will have a time lag, I don't know how long, between the time the picture is taken and the time it shows up on the monitor. In this time lag, you could just take another shot or two. After the image shows on the external, you have to take your eyes from the camera to check the shot, see if it's good and then either let that student go, or take another shot. Also, the screen just cannot be in view of the subject or they will start mugging to see what sort of idiot expressions they can come up with, but it also can't be in sight of the other students, for the same reason. Meanwhile, you've taken your eye off the ball, which is the subject in front of you. You don't have his/her attention, anymore. School photography is a bit of a pressure cooker. Generally, you have a lot of kids to shoot in not very much time, and you really need to crank them through. Also, kids are a bit like puppies in that they are easily distracted. If you aren't keeping them engaged, their little minds will wander, which can be a bit of a disaster if you need to do another shot because of closed eyes or bad expression. I really think the camera review screen is your best bet here, just from conversations I've had with our photographers and the very limited experience I've had shooting school photos. I'm not saying it isn't worth some trouble, I just can't help but think that overall it really could be trouble, more trouble than it's worth. Re: Re: Using a PC as monitor for K20D
Good points, Luiz I'm not sure how this is usually done. I'd prefere being alone waith each student for a few minutes. The guy I know is telling me he is shooting one class - 25 students - in just 15 minutes. I haven't seen his shots, but they certainly made him rich :-) If I can earn my yearly sallery in two months, I will have 8 months left to do really nice, artistic shots elsewhere - and two months holliday with my family ;-) Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Enabelment - Chromakey
Hello list I just wanted you to know, that I just bought a green background (chromagreen backdrop) and a set of portable backdrop roll carriers. I also got the Digital Anarchy Chromakey plug-in for Photoshop. So, I can digitaly change the backgrounds for my portraits. I just can't wait to try it out in practice :-) I have done some experiments in Photoshop. I seems to be working very well. I can make my own bacgrounds or buy stock photo backgrounds. For this purpose some phototographers used Henzel Front Projection in the old days (seventies). This was very expensive (like 1 USD). Today this can be done on the computer for MUCH less :-) Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT: Cactus V4 - radio flash trigger - enablement
Hello list I got a new Cactus V4 kit a couple of days ago. Thaat is a radio flash trigger system. Not a fancy one supporting TTL and stuff like that. Just a simple 16 channel trigger. I have tested it with a camera falsh as well as a studio flash (the needed cords came in the box). Hello William Over here, it's about the same. A few companies are dominating the business. Still I think it's a free market. I can try to get a piece of the cake, if I want. I am current trying too start/run a business doing photography for planning purposes - www.planfoto.dk. I know thee'll be times with very few or no orders, so I'm looking for supplementary sources of income. Portraits could be one of them. School portraits doesn't hjave to make you rich, but if you have enough orders, the salery is quite good. One school class = 1-2 weeks salery. It's like photographing in an assembly line. A frind of mine once said: You can make a living from just about anything, if you organize it well. I guess this goes for school photography too. I actually know a photographer, who became quite whealty this way. Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.
