since Charles McCarn who has an enormous collection and has been collecting for 40 or 50 years has never come across one... besides, what can the survival rate of a disposable cardboard box actually be? Perhaps Charles in his 40 or 50 years, has not had the opportunity or desire to check ebay. As George G. saidthey come up on ebay from time to time. A couple of years ago, someone on ebay was selling them, and they looked like NOS. He had a bunch of them. I got my six pack pre-ebay and paid a lot for it, because I, like you, had never seen one before. So the internet (ebay) is the great equalizer, and has made scarce things more common (again and again). An example of this in another collecting field are the original cardboard boxes for the Toonerville Trolley toy. These were from the 20's. Someone recently found dozens, NOS, in a warehouse, and now can be found in flea markets, shows, and yes, ebay. Dennis ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
Re: [Phono-L] Edison Retail Cylinder Box???
Ok, let me re-phrase that; they are not terribly rare. My 6-cylinder was from a fellow collector in the 1990s, my two 3-cylinders were from another collector but my Amberol box came from Union or one of the East Coast shows and wasn't at all expensive. I can't remember how much, but that fact that I don't remember means it was one of those yeah, I'll buy that purchases, not one of those oh god, it's pricey but my life won't be complete without it purchases. And yes, I should have said that the ones on eBay seemed like NOS as they were still flat and were up constantly. Jim, I would not call the cardboard boxes common they are harder to find than the Edison Standard Record boxes which I have seen about 50 of over the years. The boxes drawn on the cardboard box itself are common. Out of 2000 boxes 6 were the standard record boxes in one random lot.
