Having 100 twenty year old rips and another 100 unripped classical CDs to sort into a usable library in the last two weeks I applied force majeure. As I adjusted the tagging I made sure most album titles started with the composer's name. Some random compilations have names I remember like "Awake the trumpets' lofty sound" and I left those alone. "South Pacific" and "Oklahoma" speak for themselves. Genre tagging is all over the place. Most albums are tagged "classical" even if they are baroque, chamber, choral, romantic or musical - but I don't care. I have a "card index box" I can quickly flip through. I did try correctly to tag Christmas carols, and succeeded; but decided it was too much effort to move from displaying Albums to Genres, so I added "Xmas:" to the album name of my 20 Carol CDs. I then had a few funnies like a HiFi News test CD from 30 odd years ago. I stuck "Xtra:" on the front of that and the other funnies. I now have a main catalogue that is rationally indexed with the Christmas Carols at the end and Xtras to bring up the rear. (Xtra indexes after Xmas!) Works for me - life's too short! I guess it would not work if I had 1000 albums! Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin
Yes, I can see that everyone wants something different. The date of release for a pop music disc is significant - less so for classical music, except where a serious collector is trying to locate a particular classical release, and differentiate it from another of the same work. The ability to switch off date display would be useful for the avoidance of screen clutter, but it's a minor issue. My albums display with a date attached. Is there a way to disable that globally? The date of the album is of no interest to me. All my ripped CDs are flac but I listen to a lot of internet radio stations - MP3, AAC and three are flac. Perhaps I should transcode to PCM? Flow is on. I will observe. Do I read this Audioscience Review correctly? https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-chromecast-audio-digital-output.4544/ It refers to the use of the Google Chromecast Audio dongle with Roon, but I am supposing the same applies with LMS/Castbridge: the transport side of the Chromecast Audio dongle can optically pass the stream bit perfectly to a DAC. (Up to 24/96?) There is therefore no merit in looking for another solution. I suppose connecting a rPi4 directly to a DAC by USB might be another solution, but one that may raise other issues. I certainly do not feel short changed working rPi4>Google Chromecast Audio> optical input on external DAC. What supported opinions can members here offer? Is there discussion I have not found on this matter in the hundreds of pages of this forum? Just a thought: If the rPi is on and online 24/7/365 I could plug in a USB hard drive and use it as a bit of backup storage "on the side". I could access it conveniently with samba. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] No Album No Artist
I got my flac library copied from my 1TB USB hard drive and will put that back on the TV. The flacs are now of a new 128GB USB flash drive - the button sort, so it looks very neat. I did have a problem getting the library re-scanned. I tried everything and really was floundering in the dark. LMS said it recognised the new storage and mount, point and I established a Samba share on the Chromebook and could see the flacs. But they would not scan! I switched from the Material skin to the default skin and the library scanned. Well I don't know! All now seems well, and I have 88GB free on the 128GB flash drive - that's more than enough for the CDs I have never ripped, and for any more I might buy in my remaining years! Thanks for the explanations: they prompted some explorations. My home screen now looks as below. Glad to have got the German version of Radio Swiss Classic. I can follow German, but French is an utterly foreign language! Still lots to learn - there have been so many developments during my years' absence. It's a beautiful sunny morning here in Southampton but a bitterly cold -3.4C. Thanks for the pointer. I will look. I must sort a backup. In the longer term I have a number of options. I currently have a 1TB USB hard drive hanging off the rPi and that drive used to hang off the telly for recording and time slipping. I could leave it on the rPi or put it back on the TV and find other storage for the FLAC library. It depends how big it is when I rip more CDs. I could get a 256GB SD card and neatly keep all inside the tiny rPi case; or, when I de-commission the old PC, there is a relatively new 256GB SSD card to be recovered -but a USB housing for it may cost as much as a 256GB SD card! Lots to think about. My eyes glaze, however, when I see lines that start /mnt and end .gz Windows I have used for years and grumbled about the whole time, ChromeOS I use all the time, but Linux is a new world. I think there are two conversations going on here. The second is between the knowledgeable and the first to help me who knows little about Linux programs and programming. I thank you all for helping me get this right and learn something. I observe that generally Linux presupposes a higher level of understanding in the user, and that means it is often less robust in the hands of those with little knowledge. As said previously I was proceeding very cautiously in those areas I didn't understand for fear of breaking my music streamer in a way I could not fix because of lack of knowledge. But I thank again those who have made available such goodies, and those who have helped me use them. I only have a 13" screen, so dividing the screen is not really an option. If I had a 24" screen I might do it. Mind you, having worked out how to make every browser instance look the same I have my 7" Tablet on the sofa next to me showing what LMS is doing while I type on this laptop on my knee. I have a Chrome shortcut on the Android home screen. I will use the Browser option on the Tablet rather than any Controller App. Material Skin is so much better. I could flip this Chromebook into Tablet mode and display LMS activity that way, but I never flip, and I rarely use my touch screen; and I don't suppose I will continue with the second screen on the Tablet - I'll just tab back and forth on the one instance of Chrome on this Chromebook. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin
Having returned to the Squeezebox fold after a few years absence I am now running LMS on a new rPi4 thanks to the generosity of a forum member. I switched to the Material Skin and I'm loving it. I am confused about maintaining a common configuration across Chrome browsers on different machines. I would expect to see the same configuration whenever I go to IPADDRESS:9000, but Settings/Interface needs reconfiguring to my taste on each instance. Is that a design constraint, or have I failed to click the right button? My main browser my home screen has Albums and Genres at the top then a fairly long list of internet radio stations, which is where most of my use is. Is there a way of replicating that home screen and all the colour prefs on any machine on my home network that I may use to access IPADDRESS:9000 ? Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: CastBridge = integrate Chromecast players with LMS (squeeze2cast)
Are there issues with Castbridge and switching to MySqueezebox.com using the source pluggin? I have twice crashed when attempting to switch Chromecasts on the Castbridge. (I suppose the virtual Squeezebox exists only in the imagination of LMS, and switching away from LMS to MySqueezebox.com kills the phantasm!) The virtual player just disappears and may show up as an orphan in that pluggin. The only solution I have found is to do a factory reset on the Chromecast Dongle - Castbridge then refinds the dongle and restores the illusion. Or it may be a particular issue with the MySqueezebox.com webpage Remote Control - none of the installed players show up - not even the Boom - the only "real" Squeezebox I have. That I deleted from MySqueezebox.com and had then re-register the Boom using the IR Remote and the Knob. I had forgotten how painful that was! The Boom shows as registered with MySqueezebox.com, but does not appear in the Remote Control dropdown for choosing the Player. So what's up? No big deal for me. I thank you again, Triode for a remarkable piece of software. I must be quite a job keeping up with the BBC's constant changes. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)
I use a Classic in UK and in Cyprus. I have manually tuned favourites which I can switch to when other means fail. Code: This I label BBC R3 AAC (Direct) http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3_aaclca.pls This I label BBC R3 WMA (Direct) http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3.asx This I label BBC R4 AAC (Direct) http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4_aaclca.pls This I label BBC R4 WMA (Direct) http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx In the web interface go to favorites and click the edit pencil. At the bottom of the edit pain click "New Favorite" Cut and past in the above URLs and name them as you choose. This method does not use the plugin and gives you the higher bitrate outside the UK - the AAC streams have only recently been so available. The WMA streams have been internationally available for a while - 192 for R3 and 128 for the rest. The R3 AAC stream tuned this was is 320. -- Labarum Brian In Southampton: Quad 77 Integrated Amp - AVI Neutron 4 In Nicosia: Quad 405-2 refurbished by 405man - Quart 980s German Tower Loudspeakers. Got me foxed, and, as I said, I am at (beyond) the limit of my IT skills. I remembered last night that my wife's laptop has SBS 7.4 installed on Vista. I switched to that, the SB downgraded its firmware and the AAC streams worked. I tried downgrading on my new laptop - it didn't work. It doesn't work on my old laptop which has a virgin installation of W7 - it did work before the OS rebuild. All very odd. The matter is not critical. I am happy with the 192 WMA streams. In more detail: Sorry, I was watching the Telly, so I did not want to switch the VPN off, but the programme has now finished! I have R3 HD twice in my favourites, once accessed using iPLayer Plugin, and once manually tuned without iPlayer Plugin. With VPN on (UK IP address) I can hear a faultless stream either way. With VPN off (Cyprus IP address) I can only receive the stream using the manually tuned favourite. That is what I would expect.
