Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Erland's Plug-ins, Large Collections, and Hardware Requirements

2012-08-22 Thread vagskal

The point is if you are working with a relatively low-memory
underpowered machine, a hardware upgrade (particularly, a memory
upgrade) may yield substantial results in Custom Browse performance.

Thanks. Yes, I got your point. Since I already have a Win XP PC with
rater decent specs, a fairly large collection, Custom Browse, Custom
Scan _and_ the performance issues you described I just wondered if
switching to Linux could give a performance boost.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2012-08-21 Thread vagskal

Thanks for the reply.

LMS is run under Win XP. I do not think there is an automatic scan
option and the autoscan plugin is not installed. I have set the scan
timer to do a nightly scan.

I executed the SQL query.

I did as you said and installed the release version of Custom Scan
(v.2.9-3834).

I enabled logging.

But now, after installing the release version of Custom Scan, the
startup was fast, just a minute or so. And the scanning... messages are
gone.

All seems well. Thanks!

Since the log file contains a lot of error messages, at least some
seemingly related to you plugins, I attach it anyway.

Thanks for sharing.

Just to be sure I understand: Vortex Box runs under Unix and you are
using Unix in the new setup, not Win 7? (Sorry if this is a basic
question, but I have not used Vortex Box. I thought it was a Linux build

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2012-08-21 Thread vagskal

I have done several reboots so it is possible I have behaved badly
against LMS. Since I am streamlining my setup for performance reasons, I
may just disable MultiLibrary which I do not normally use actively.
Risking the CustomScan data that I have managed to get into the
persistent database is in any case not an option. Although I cannot
check at the moment, there should not be any run out of disc space
problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2012-08-20 Thread vagskal

I tried to streamline my LMS set up by disabling Custom Scan startup
rescan refresh and the automatic rescan (one issue was that new data
supposed to be scanned by Custom Scan such as album rating for newly
added albums did not show up, maybe Custom Scan which is really slow
never had a chance to finish between my nightly scans). But after a PC
reboot LMS web UI (but not the Custom Scan settings page) still reports
a Custom Scan running. Is that just some kind of display issue?

I seem to remember installing a beta version of Custom Scan, I have
v.3.0pre3832, that might be doing scans differently. How can I get the
latest stable version back? I could not see any other version in the
plugins page.

I have also downgraded to 7.7.2 release LMS version.

I still get long startup times although I have disabled TrackStat
startup rescan refresh. The TrackStat version is 3.1.3829.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Squeezebox Win 7 Desktop Gadget No Longer Works

2012-08-18 Thread vagskal

I have been using the Squeezebox Win 7 desktop gadget but now it has
stopped working. The issue is that the settings in the gadget (info on
the server to use) will no longer stick, they are gone as soon as I
close the options window.

I looked in the Windows Sidebar folder (C:\Users\[User
Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar) and the settings info is
stored in the Settings.ini file. It just seems that the gadget is no
longer able to read from it. Other gadgets work.

I suspect the recent Windows security update has changed something due
to the newly discovered risks with using gadgets.

Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

OK.

Aborting by pressing the red X now works.

muso was using under 800 kB RAM.

muso seemed not to respect the show desktop command (from the Windows
task bar).

After muso was sent to the background it was not possible to show the
muso Windows again through alt+tab or the Windows task bar. Therefore I
could not check the status of muso.

Eventually muso crashed. This was with the entire collection.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-08-08 Thread vagskal

It worked with the 268 albums in my Blues genre.

I guess the pivot viewer is some kind of touch screen interface and it
takes some time to get used to it. One thing I noticed was that the
thumbnails were very small when all 268 albums were shown. Zooming with
the mouse scroll wheel helped, but when I selected an album by clicking
on it and then deselected it by clicking on it again muso reverted to
the initial view with all 268 albums, not the zoom state I came from. It
is cool that the zooming goes on forever (using the mouse scroll wheel,
not the thumbnail slider).

Choosing the Freshness sort option repeated times shuffled some of the
albums (they switched places). It looked kind of cool, but I wonder if
that was intended.

Oh, and I thought the Labels option would show the albums by record
label but that is obviously not the case.

Is there any now playing screen in pivot view? I could not find any. For
me to consider an interface such as this for everyday use a now playing
screen is a must, and information on contributing and supporting artists
on a per track basis.

You must have put a lot of work into this!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-08-07 Thread vagskal

I thought I should try the new beta pivot viewer out with my rather
large collection.

The result was:
1. It took a very long time to build the collection and there was no
cancel button or any way to build the collection in the background (like
with synchronize where I can switch to other programs while muso is
working).
2. In the process of building the collection muso hogged all available
RAM and when it reached building the collection to 99% muso stopped
working and was closed. I tried it twice with the same result. The
second time muso started all over again although the previous run had
built the collection to 99%.

Just wanted to give you some feedback.

Some 149k tracks in 10k albums. I often have huge cover art, some as
large as 4,000x4,000 - I aim for over 1,000x1,000.

The red X to cancel did not work for me. Nothing happened when I tried.
Maybe an easier way to switch to other programs when the collection is
building (like showing the task bar)? I did not try ctrl+tab, but using
other programs in my secondary window (without task bar or Windows
button) worked.

As I said, muso took all available memory, which I think was some 2GB
RAM for muso alone when I checked.

Well only one artist is also shown in all file lists, like playlists and

having the large NP screen displayed to show what is playing on the
stereo.

In my opinion, it should be a priority to fix this. The display of
multiple artists tracks looks silly or even confusing to the user
(looking at the NP screen and seeing the name of a man while hearing a
lady sing - Billie Holiday Teddy Wilson, for instance). And the
competition has this fixed since long.

One workaround would be to copy the data in our Artist field to a custom
field, Artists perhaps, and the replace all ; with , in the Artist
field. You can do this with MP3Tag and even use reg ex to replace he
last ; with amp; for nicer display. The new field with your original
data can be scanned with CustomScan and browsed with CustomBrowse.

The cover art for that file was not shown by iPeng, just a black image

As far as I can recall the cover art with black bars were not that

PS. I just tried Show cover art in iPeng for the really huge 7200x7200

Another cover art of only 1412x1389 showed just fine in iPeng. The

1. Play a track for which LMS did not pick up cover art. Touch and hold
on the lower left now playing cover art area and in the context menu
choose show cover art. When exiting from the context menu/cover art
display screen by tapping elsewhere on the screen iPeng for iPad is
crashing within a couple of seconds. I managed to reproduce this
several times, also when the track was not playing. The track in
question was a flac file that had had embedded huge cover art
originally picked up by LMS, but where I had removed the embedded art
and just left a huge folder.jpg in the album folder that was not picked
up by LMS on search for new or added music.

2. On the now playing screen it is not possible to adjust the overall
volume for a group of players while the multi player control is open;
this is possible on the normal screen.

3. If cover art is not square, black borders are added in the lower
left now playing cover art area. I think it would look nicer if the
borders were transparent.

There is nothing interesting in the log when running muso in debug

The .13 version works fine.

Yes, iPeng for iPad 1.2.6 with latest LMS 7.7.2 Windows build. All

Thanks for fixing this for the next version! It was confusing and it

The standard Vorbis comment in flac files for label is called

Are you considering having muso scan files in the LMS database for
additional file tags? That would be a great enhancement.

standard Vorbis comment tag IDs? Yes I'd like to extend it to read as
many standard tags as I can, maybe even some additional ad-hoc tags by
configuration. I'll need a new attribute for
 ORGANIZATION/PUBLISHER/LABEL/call-it-what-you-will plus any more
standard tags I need to support, plus browse-by options for each such
 new attribute.

Here is the only standard I have heard of
http://wiki.xiph.org/VorbisComment. If you support different comments
for the same muso field, I think the standard field should win if there
are conflicting values. The label/ORGANIZATION info should of course be
visible on the album and now playing page. Should one album have
different values, just pick one value to use for the entire album.

I think some attributes do not need a browse by option, just to be
visible in now playing and on a per album/track basis depending on the
nature of the tag.

Just to be clear: today I only sync muso with LMS. Will muso go the the
music files referenced in LMS (and visible to muso) and scan additional
tags into muso? Even if LMS and muso are run on different computers?

instead activate an alarm already set, the activation will not stick,
but nothing is set on the top/primary player, I.e. no alarm at all is
set/activated. I must ungroup the player I want to set the alarm on to
have the alarm set on that player; I could not find a way in iPeng to
reorder the grouped players.

1. Muso is not showing artwork in the Albums view (the view with all
albums showing thumbnails) for an album named †, where the latter part
of the path to the album folder is Justice\† (2007). A small red X is
shown instead of the artwork. In the Album page (showing just that
album) the artwork is shown.

2. I cannot get muso to show artwork for my one album by the
artist/album artist Goran Kajfeš. In the Album view a generic CD image
is shown and on the Album page for that album no artwork at all is
shown.

In both cases the artwork show up fine in LMS/iPeng. I have tried to
clear artwork for those albums and then Find missing artwork. (The
Goran Kajfeš album artwork did not even show up after I wiped the
entire muso database and resynced with LMS; I have not tried that with
the Justice album I just added.)

Could it have something to do with the funny characters?

Both albums are MP3 with ID3v2.3 tags and embedded artwork as well as a

The name of the Justice artwork in the muso covers cache is just

the other album (named Headspin).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-24 Thread vagskal

This is almost certainly not a muso issue.

That said, my guess is that you have in your music files both ID3v2
tags and ID3v1 tags. The latter have a limit on the length of the tag
which the former do not have. To test/rectify use MP3Tag:
1. In MP3Tag settings (Mpeg) set MP3Tag to read/show all tag variants
and to write ONLY ID3v2 tags and delete all tag types BUT ID3v2. Set
MP3Tag to show a Tag column (I think it is there by default; the tag
value should be %_tag_read%[ (%_tag%)]).
2. Add some mp3 files to MP3Tag (work on a copy of the files first just
to see if it works) and see what the Tag column shows (probably both
ID3v2.3 and ID3v1).
3. Select all files and first save all tags and the delete all tags.
Now your music files should only contain the longer ID3v2 tags and the
abbreviated version from the ID3v1 tags should never show up after a
rescan in LMS and muso.

Re-ripping with dBpoweramp to flac is always a good idea.

Yes, having your music in flac is a good thing, and you get secure rips
and good meta data from AMG with dBpoweramp. Although re-ripping can be
a bit boring. I know since I have done it myself.

(When ripping with dBpoweramp to flac you do not get ID3 tags that can
have length limitations but Vorbis comments without such limitations
that LMS/muso can read.)

Have you tried with another album? If your hard drive takes a while to
spin up, then you will not get images for the first album you access
and that result is cached so that album will not show images during
that session. But if you choose a second album when the hard drive is
up and running you should hopefully see the images. I had the same
issue and it took some investigation to find out what was going on.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2011-12-10 Thread vagskal

I use only one SBS server. Sometimes when I use a CustomBrowse menu the
server stalls for a while and iPeng looses connection. I thought that
the new version should reconnect to the player it was connected to
before the disconnection. But I see the same behaviour as before: iPeng
connects to another player (a player beginning with the letter A) not
one of the players in a player group (with names beginning with letters
that comes later than A in the alphabet) that iPeng was controlling
before the disconnection.

Or did I misunderstand the fix/feature in the new version?

The stalling in itself is obviously a far worse issue than having to
manually reconnect the correct player. I just (mis)understood that you
had fixed the reconnection thing in the new version and therefore asked
here. I am sure there are good reasons for iPeng's memory loss when it
is feeling lonely/serverless.

Changing the current server name from within iPeng caused iPeng to

Oh. No, actually it _should_ be translated I'll check that.

Thanks for the reply!

It seems to have been a one time event. I tried changing the name back
and forth and now all went well. Probably just one of those things. It
was the first thing I did after installing the new version and finding
a spelling error in the SBS server name (in the advanced settings, not
for a manually configured server - I did not even know that it was
possible to change the name).

The language is Swedish and above the new Advanced Settings button
there is a block about twice the height of the button with a slightly
lighter blue colour. (Let me know if you would like a picture.)

In the same dialog the buttons Rescan, Clear and Playlists are also not
translated. And the word Manuell (Wake-On-Lan) is misspelled (it is
spelled Manuel). I think I have reported this before.

I got several (at least 4 or 5) crashes with the new version. Is there
a way that I can retrieve the crash reports on the iPad itself and send
them to you? (Unfortunately Wi-Fi sync does not work with my iPad and
the usb drivers on my Win 7 64 bit PC are not recognising the iPad.)

Thanks for listening! The display view in the referenced link - or some
other solution - could be useful in a full screen display where
different images (back, inside, inlay, booklet, cd/lp/single) for one
album are displayed really large and can be altered/moved by the arrow
keys.

I forgot to request the ability to display embedded cover art for the
Now Playing song. (For compilation or VA albums I embed different
singles cover art for each track, and I have a folder.jpg in the album
folder to represent the compilation/VA album as an entity.) SBS and
iPeng can display individual cover art for the currently playing song.

embedded in the music file but iPeng found lyrics on the internet, and
then I can try to find the lyrics and embed them (since that is the way

A more complicated request would be to have muso automatically detect
changes to the SBS database and doing a resync.

More links to the artist, album and track (Wikipedia, AMG, MusicBrainz
and Discogs) could also be useful (maybe even a browser window/tab
within muso).

And - although muso is excellent as a SBS front end on a Windows PC

too much spare time. :) (How about an Artists cover wall, like with

erland;672936 Wrote:
Is this something that could be of more general usage for more users ?

 standard menu templates ?

Yes! That would be great. I think everyone can benefit from the
standard CB menus having a uniform display for album and track lists,
and an easy way for inexperienced users to adjust what is displayed on
which line in a track list in iPeng.

There are two things here: The album list and the file list. The album
list is depending on the sql that produces the output string. Could the
output be made consistent for all CB standard menus? For consistent
display in iPeng the order must be Album Name - Artist/Composer -
Year, unless you introduce a way to rearrange the captures. Or perhaps
Pippin can consider displaying both the album name and year on the first
line (I would love to be able to see also the year when in the two line
album cover view).

erland;672936 Wrote:
Does it look good in IP3K interface (Classic, Boom, Transporter,

Does it look good in the web interface ?

It does not matter to me since I do not use those interfaces any more,
but I see your point.

No, currently I would not say it looks good but I hope it can be easily
fixed.

The NP info is not at all affected (each player has its own
titleformat).

The album list modification is obviously only affecting CB menus. The
strange thing is that in the sample menu the album list displays the
raw sql output, Album Name (Artist1,Artist2,Year). I do not know what
that menu looked like in the web UI before the modification, but now the
captures are obviously not used.

The SBS standard album menu uses Album Name (Year) Artist so it would
be nice and consistent if that order could be used in CB album lists in
the web UI and on players.

Changing the standard SBS titleformat affects the display in file
lists. This could be handled by choosing a nice looking separator
unlikely to occur in any tag, -*- •• etc.

I noticed that the CustomScan tag I have in my standard SBS titleformat
is not showing up in file lists outside CB menus. If it is not a bug
this feature could perhaps be used. Add an extra CustomScan table
with a separator for all tracks and use this CustomScan tag in the
standard SBS titleformat. In CB menus the RegEx should filter out the
separator character. It is not that way now for my sample menu in the
web UI; the separator is showing up and the captures from the RegEx are
not used.

Thanks for considering this!

Did you try out the Browse by selected option? With just an extra touch
you will get a list of all albums where the selected composer appears
as composer, album artist or artist, i.e. the old behaviour.

There is an option in SBS to show also composers in the artist list. I
think you will get the old behaviour back if you choose this option
(and a cluttered artist list).

I attach the finished sample menu in case anyone else can benefit from
the example. MrC came up with a RegEx to fix the remaining issue with
the album menu. Regarding the file list, the standard SBS/LMS
titleformat has to be set to [Whatever you want in the first line in
the list of tracks] ¤ [Whatever you want in the second line in the list
of tracks].

After this the CB menu looks as nice as the standard iPeng menus but
with more information (all track artists can be displayed for each
track and I can add any information I want in the track list). The only
thing I cannot figure out is how to get the year of the album to be
displayed aligned to the right in the heading describing the album in
the (second) track menu.

How is the display in iPeng in an Album list = List of files in one

displayed. Does multi line display require another jivepattern
somewhere? If at all possible I would like the display to be Track.

Aha, the jivepattern thing you were going to describe on the wiki...

Does your implementation support rearranging of the captures (Capture
2, Capture 3, Capture 1)? In the thumbnail album view in iPeng two
lines are shown in CB menus, Album - Year instead of Album - Artist
like in the iPeng standard menus. And in my file list Track. Artist(s)
come before Name

Is there an easy way to see the string the RegEx is applied to? In the
file list I see Track. Artist(s) - Name (Year), so if that is the
string the second capture in your sample RegEx would get only the Year
(^(.*)\s-\s(.*)$; Order 2, 1 is what I need for that string provided
I do not have any artist with - in his name). And for Album lists
where there are already two or three lines I cannot see the delimiter
between the lines.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

Is it possible to make CustomBrowse menus that in file lists on iPeng
show each entry on two lines, like the standard iPeng menus? How is
this done?

In iPeng CB menus already show several lines for each entry in album
lists. But the display is different from what iPeng standard menus
show. For compilations CB menus lack the display of Year. Otherwise CB
display Album - Year - Album Artist where iPeng standard menus display
Album - Album Artist - Year. Is there any way to make CB menu display
in iPeng look like the iPeng standard menus? How is this done?

To display multiple artists in menus in iPeng you can use CustomBrowse
menus. For display in now playing and current playlist you will have to
wait for pippin to fix it as he explained.

Pippin, it is great hearing that you are considering this also for
iPeng menus!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2011-10-31 Thread vagskal

I have the alpha version of CustomScan. It has never worked (in the
sense that it does not add custom tags when doing a nightly SBS scan
for new and changed music and that it seems to never actually finish),
but it has not done any harm either until this morning. I triggered a
manual scan for new and changed music and playback stopped and it has
been that way for over an hour with this in the server.log:

Code:

[11-10-31 08:41:39.5625] Slim::Utils::Scanner::Local::__ANON__ (251)
Removing deleted files (0)
  [11-10-31 08:41:39.5628] Slim::Utils::Scanner::Local::__ANON__ (326) Scanning
new files (1)
  [11-10-31 08:41:39.5643] Slim::Utils::Scanner::Local::__ANON__ (401)
Rescanning changed files (54424)
  [11-10-31 08:41:42.0782] Plugins::CustomScan::Scanner::trackChanged (713)
Rescanning due to updated or added track:
file:///I:/MP3/Min%20musik/Samlingar/Billboard/Billboard%201948/00%20-%20Tystnad.mp3
  [11-10-31 08:41:42.1062] Plugins::CustomScan::Scanner::refreshData (2572)
CustomScan: Synchronizing Custom Scan data, please wait...

I should have the latest version since I restarted SBS just before
triggering the rescan.

It was not possible to stop SBS using the tray icon so I had to kill
the Squeezebox process with task manager.

I do not use Browse Music Folder. It is the scheduled nightly scan for

and there is no autoscan). Yesterday I had changed tags in 20 albums
and 6 of them now has the generic grey icon in iPeng instead of cover
art. A flush cash restored the cover art.

The server doesn't update the lastscan attribute in these cases so
iPeng has no chance to know something has changed.

OK, I see. The strange thing is that the cache is obviously not updated
automatically in this case but some album art nevertheless disappears
(the grey generic icon shown instead in cover art view). Is the cover
art shown in iPeng not retained in iPeng's cache?

I have not changed cover art for the albums with disappearing cover art
in iPeng, just changed some tag for the files in the album.

But now I often find cases of album art for albums where I have changed

with changed files show up with cover art.

If I go to an artist in the artist list who has also tracks on a VA
album and select add to playlist in the album context menu for that VA
album, all tracks on the VA album are added not just the tracks where
the selected artist is the artist.

The Controller (and SqueezePad and the Web UI) works as expected in
this situation and adds only tracks where the selected artist is the
artist on the VA album to the playlist.

Thanks for the reply!

The Custom Tag scan seems to have ended tonight.

I have 20k flac files and 100k mp3 files. No other file types (except
jpg for cover art). There are a lot of tags in the files, but only some
are scanned as Custom Tags. I enclose my customscan.prefs file.

Now I will fire up a Rating Tag scan and hope for the best.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: New versions of erlands plugins

2011-10-07 Thread vagskal

Yesterday morning I started a manual Custom Tag Custom Scan with the
Custom Scan alpha version. It was not finished late yesterday night and
at 4 AM an automatic SBS scan for new and changed files kicked in. Now
the Custom Scan manage scanning page says that the Custom Tag scan is
still Running And the SBS info page reports that a scan is under
way, but that scan seems to be extremely slow judging from the info
displayed - Searching for files (12477) found in more than 4,5h.

Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or should I have disabled the
scheduled SBS rescan? No relevant error messages that I can see in the
server.log.

I do not get the good results that aeo12 got with 150k tracks. I am on
Win XP with 120k tracks.

If the initial custom scan still takes this long in large libraries, an
option to skip files that already have custom tags would be useful so
that the initial scan can be done in chunks.
