Why do you need the RealAudio streams when there are equally good WMA
 streams which need no transcoding.

Will iPlayer work on a DS-207 with SSODS 3.15, SlimServer 6.54 and
AlienBBC 1.06? My DS-207 does not have enough memory to run a later
version of SqueezeCentre.

 to suit the QNAP systems.

To stream BBC in AAC you need a special version of faad and I don't

 Thanks.

Unfortunately the same thing did not work on the QNAP, where I still

There seems to be many people still having the same problems i.e.
BBCiPlayer not playing listen-again streams on a QNAP (e.g. see

actually find any bug reports or any signs of anyone working on a
solution.

I understood from the above, that the necessary version of faad is
included in Squeezecenter from version 7.3.3 but this doesn't seem to
help on a QNAP installation.

Questions:
~~

Is this an issue with the Linux version of SqueezeCenter,
or is it a specific problem with SSOTS?

How can we help to find out?

How can users with this problem best raise or support a bug report to
get this issue fixed?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this post is out of sequence.

Please do not lump problems together just because they have the same
symptoms. This can result in multiple conversations happening in the

worked through until the problem is understood.

This may not be the same problem - QNAP problem is a bug in the perl

When you have a command prompt window open (it usually has white text on
a black background).

At the prompt type in the following and press return/enter.
cd \Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
The above assume an English Windows installation and Squeezecenter
install. Since you changed to 7.4 - I don't know off hand where
faad.exe ios located. It is not good to keep changing different things
when trying to solve a problem. You will need to find faad.exe
yourself.

Then type in the following and press return/enter.
dir

Check that there is a faad.exe and a flac.exe in the lines displayed.
If there is then type in the following and press return/enter.
faad

Please post back describing what text you see.

That shows faad.exe is OK. It looks like your problem is not caused by
the usual sources.

Since the illstreet48.pls also fails - it indicates the problem is in
the SC transcoding which involves faad.exe but it is not clear why it is
failing. So it is necessary to get some more detailed log messages to
see what is happening when trying to play. Can you do the following.

1. WebUI Settings/Advanced/Logging set player.source to DEBUG and
click Apply.
2. Using WebUI Tune-in - try to play
http://www.somafm.com/illstreet48.pls
3. Wait 1 minute after clicking play
4. Open the server.log window see WebUI Settings/Information bottom of
page.
5. Copy into a text file (use Notepad) all log messages from time of
Play to last message.
6. Zip the file and attach to a post.

A lot of QNAP users are having this problem. It feels like the
processor is overloaded and cannot decode and re-encode the stream in
realtime.

To lighten the processing load but this will increase network traffic -
try disabling the encoding of AAC into Flac. So in WebUI
Settings/Advanced/FileTypes disable AAC-MP3 and AAC-Flac and then see
if the stream plays.

I believe a QNAP should be able to play AAC streams provided

1. The faad is built using the fixed point option
2. the AAC streams are played as PCM and not transcoded into MP3 or
FLAC

I believe The Sheevaplug processor has no floating point which will
mean that any transcoding into MP3 or Flac could be a significant load
and may not deliver the performance you expect (e.g. may be able to
handle one player but not multiple)

faad, flac and lame should be benchmarked to see whether they can do
encoding/decoding in realtime.

Hi Triode.

Can I ask for yuur help as you seem to be the expert on this?
I posted this earlier:

-Firstly, my apologies if this is covered eƩsewhere, but I am not that
technical and am getting a bit confused...

I live outside the UK (Switzerland) and have rcently downloaded
Squeezecenter 7.4 to work with my squeezebox. I love listening again to
BBC radio programmes, and I soon realised AlienBBC would not work, so
got rid of it and have tried the Iplayer plugin instead.

However when I have tried to apply the plugin, I keep getting the
message in the plugins list that 'Iplayer is incompatible with this
version of Squeezecenter - Please update'

This is difficult as I can't find any other versions of Iplayer - or is
it asking mt to update Squeezecenter which I can't as I have the latest
version.

Hope this makes sense, would appreciate any simple technical
explanations as to what i can do!! :-)

Simon Fathers -

I really can't follow a lot of the threads on this forum as they often
use terms I don't understand. All I use my squeezebox for is accessing
my mp3s and listen again via Alien BBC (as was) but now I can't find
listen agin and Iplayer plugin doesn't seem to be working at all. Have
gone back to version 7.3.3 in attempt to get it to work but no joy as
yet!

Very frustrated - I'm a music fan who just wants to use his piece of
kit but I am not a techie!!

would appreciate any help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-11-02 Thread bpa

Please try to run the program faad.exe (it decode AAC) to see if
libraries are the problem.

1. Open a Command prompt windows (XP Start/Accessories/Command Prompt
2. Change directory to the directory which has faad.exe. On English
Windows it is in C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
3. run faad.exe and you should get a version message. ANything else is
a problem.

2009-11-01 Thread alexandali

I've just upgraded my SSOTS and SC to the latest versions as below-
iPlayer was working just fine before on SSOTS 3.15 and SC7.3 Getting the
same symptoms - no sound on any feed from iPlayer although the Duet
display shows all the right things. No sound on my Boom or squeezeplay
either. Everything else works fine now. There seem to be several other
people over on the QNAP forum with this very same problem I think. I've
tried all the AAC/MP3/WMA settings to no avail.I'm in the UK. Any ideas
or anything I can do to diagnose the problem??
Have attached a log with iplayer settings to debug.

Bryan and Adrian hello.

You have done a wonderful thing. With your tiny niche AlienBBC
application you have moved the mountain of BBC bureaucracy to defy the
pressures of the current paranoic proprietary commercial music culture
and give people what they deserve: access to that for which they have
already paid.

For UK residents and tax payers it gives them huge payback on their
taxes. For the rest of the world it is a wonderful vehicle for showing
the world just what a wonderful culture the UK are. (Which, of course is
the basis on which the BBC were founded.)

So you have moved the mountain.

Thank you.

Well done.

I am quite confident that the extension of the BBC iPlayer to
SqueezeNet would not have happened but for AlienBBC giving people what
they want.

So now you can rest. For a while. But I am quite sure you shall find
other dragons to slay... :-)

Thank you again. God bless you both.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-27 Thread agbagb

Just added BB iPlayer to the set-up detailed below, and it seems to work
pretty well.

Comments:

a) iPlayer seems to have solved the constant rebuffering that I have
been getting using Alien to play live streams.

b) iPlayer output is definitely a notch quieter than the Alien
equivalent.

c) I'm sometimes getting oddities in getting iPlayer audio (Live, or
Listen Again) to start up. If I want to play direct from the iPlayer
menu, I now usually have to go right to the very furthest menu item to
get the Play icon to work. (eg, the Play icon alongside BBC Radio 7
under Home BBC iPlayer Listen Live *doesn't* start the audio. I
need to go one level further to Home BBC iPlayer Listen Live BBC
Radio 7 (where the logo and URL appear) to get the Play icon to work).
Also, I save all my live radio streams as playlists (indeed my Playlist
folder is called Radio, and has only my radio faves in it):
sometimes the Play icon under playlists works, sometimes it
doesn't..

d) The change in Alarm behavior is very annoying - but I'm going to
raise that in a separate thread.

Have you disabled any audio formats in either BBCiPlayer settings or

Can you give a specific example of a program that doesn't play and that

2009-10-26 Thread bpa

I'm at a loss.

AAC support on Linux was not standard in 7.3.2 so something has been
added to your system which is non standard but enabled AAC support.

SSOTS is a special build of SC with a lots of things added and changed
to suit the QNAP systems.

To stream BBC in AAC you need a special version of faad and I don't
think your setup has it - even if you move to 7.3.3 I could still not be
sure about what changes SSOTS has made.

If you are in the UK - then it may be possible to use MP3 instead of
AAC for Listen Again. For live stream - play the WMA streams - use BBC
App or Radiofeeds UK.

Maybe we should therefore ignore the QNAP / Linux issues to begin

Using the Vista installation I see exactly the same iPlayer problems,
i.e. most programmes show a picture and description but no URL (and do
not play).
I am outside of the UK.

Questions:
- Would a missing or wrong type of decoder cause iPlayer not to display
any URL for the stream, or just not allow it to play a displayed URL?
- Would the necessary version of faad normally be available in Windows
Vista (and any tips as to how I can find out if I have it)?

Thanks in advance - I appreciate that this is taking up a lot of your

I believe it needs to be 7.3.3 to have support for AAC radio streaming.

you upgrade it to 7.4.1, but 7.3.3 should work.

The BBCiPlayer plugin will appear as BBC iPlayer under the Internet
Radio menu. If you do not have the BBC iPlayer menu - restart SBS and
also check your install.

In the BBCiPlayer Menu you have Listen Live - under this submenu are
all the live streams.

In the BBCiPlayer Menu you also have stations such as Radio 1 - under
these submenus are all the listen Again.

There is no A-Z list of programs in BBCiPlayer.

Yup, thanks. There it is and the various shows under each station too.

All fine on the SB Server.

But - and this is a big but, as I generally do not have the PC running
all the time or SB Server either - I listen through SB.com, formerly the
squeezenetwork. On my SBs, now under My Apps is a BBC listing. Beneath
that are the channels again. No Listen Live choice, either. But they
seem only to be the live feeds, as when I press the right nav key, I get
only the add to favourites or remove if already in the favourites.

Do I need to reload or sync the SBs again? Aren't they talking to the
SBS on my PC?

Thefailed to parse message is usually associated with network problem
and the inability to get the program info from BBC. Sometime caused by
security s/w other time by network timeout.

What OS are you using ?
If Windows what security s/w ?
Does the problem happen if security s/w is uninstalled (disbaling is
usually not sufficient).

Listen Again has never been available on SN so there is no change in
Functionality. On SN when a station is shown - it is always the live
stream. This is the way it has always been - no change.

On SN/MySB.com if you have problem playing the BBC live feeds - try the
RadioFeed UKs APP - it has more up to date URLs for BBC.

into Flac particularly if the processor does not have floating point
support.

Try playing this 128k AAC stream - radio Paradise

Not sure what this has to do with BBC feeds - the AAC filetype is NOT
the setting to change when dealing with BBC.

It is generally not a good idea to disable a filetype. I'm not sure
even what you mean by disable AAC filetypes - there are usually 4
settings WAV, PCM, MP3 and native - which ones are you disabling ?

2009-10-23 Thread IanCHC

Hello

I am having a problem with listen again - live works fine. I also had
the same issue with several 7.41 interim builds - the last time it
worked was with the 7.4 [but that once suffered form the multiple
instances problem].

I see all the program listings and can choose a progam - but nothing
other than the program name banner ever appears.

The slim server web page claims that it is playing to the device for a
while - it counts time happily but no sound.

I have a readyNAS Nv as the server.

During the upgrade I used the cleandb, removed all old versions,
applied, clenadb again etc.

Previously I enabled ssh and used a set of instructions posted
elsewhere in this forum to clean up all the squeeze stuff from 7.4

Any thoughts or things I should check?

Thank you

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-22 Thread bpa

Some changes are needed to AlienBBC as BBC have stopped some RealAudio
and the version no needs to be updated for 7.4.1.

The categories issues is a limitation placed by BBC I have an idea
which may provide a similar feature for BBCiPlayer but putting effort
into maintaining AlienBBC means new features have to be delayed.

AlienBBC has more programs because the Web pages tend to be
conservative and show about programs for about 8 days whereas BBCiPlayer
uses an XML feed which imposes a very strict 7 days limit and also is a
bit slower in makeing programs available.

If you are in the UK then rebuffering is probably because you are
getting higher speed streams - some non UK streams are also high speed
than RealAudio such as local radio.
If you are outside the UK then rebuffering should not happen with
Listen again - it could be a server or local network issue but it is
worth checking.

Having upgraded to 7.4 SSOTS 4.1. Neither Iplayer nor AlienBBC works:

Alien BBC whines about not having mplayer - I presume this has been

Iplayer does everything apart from making any sound - no error message

Any ideas?

Use BBCiPlayer as BBC are stopping RealAudio in March 2010.

Are you in the UK ?
What sort of player are you using ?

If you are on SSOTS and using an older player (i.e. not SB Radio or
Squeezeplay) - make sure SSOTS has the faad and flac that have been
built with the patches that come with SBS.

SSODS creator has to ensure the flac and faad issues as it require a

As a test - can you play this AACplus stream - if it works then faad

That SOMAfm stream is 48k - the BBC streams are typically 128k for UK
listeners so your system may mot be able to handle transcoding the
higher speed better quality Flash / AAC.

You didn't say what sort of player you but assuming you do not have an
SB1 or older, then you could try disabling the AAC preference in
BBCiPlayer settings. Then MP3 or WMA should be sent to the player

One reason for using Alien is that occasionally I find programmes that

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

The BBC create the Web pages from the schedule info and so the assigned
program id are usually known when Web page are available so AlienBBC
knows a program id even before the program is broadcast and so it can
start playing it as soon as the program file has been created.
BBCiPlayer uses the XML feed which is only updated a few times a days (I
feel it is about every 3 hrs).

The issue is not RealAudio vs Flash/AAC etc. but the source of program
id. AlienBBC could use the id to get the Flash/AAC or WMA streams
instead of RealAudio.

AlienBBC is slower to display menus (i.e. uses more CPU and more
network GETs) and from a maintenance point of view needs more effort to
keep up to date as the web pages changes often.

Alien seems to have better Favourite handling of streams, especially
with alarms.

The only other reason I'd like to keep the Alien functionality over
iPlayer these days is that occasionally I encounter other real audio
streams and I believe Alien is the only way to play these on my
SqueezeBoxes. Do shout if I've got this wrong!!

Real Player seems to be in terminal decline so presumably this will
become less of an issue over time.

The better Favorite handling will go away when BBC stop RealAudio
streams in March 2010 - the real solution is to fix SBS alarm handling
of streams.

If you want to wake up to live BBC streams - I suggest using the WMA
streams.

It is the intention to create two Plugins - one for RealAudio support
(still used by RAI Italy and RTE Ireland) and another for WMA support
for older players on Linux and OSX. These plugins will therefore just
provide audio format support - no station handling. The user will use
Tune-in and favorites to play the streams / files.

Alien seems to have better Favourite handling of streams, especially
 with alarms.

When the BBC retire RealAudio, AlienBBC will not show any menu items as
there will be no RealAudio URLs provided so you will not be able to set
alarm based on Alien entries/Favorites.

Once RealAudio is gone, to play BBC programs as alarm then you will
have to use BBCiPlayer. I have not tested but there are a few threads
about some awkwardness about using BBCiPlayer streams with alarms.

Since the BBC has announced they will be stopping RealAudio streams by
30 March 2010 (with the exception of World Service) - BBCiPlayer is the
preferred plugin for users of BBC and as such AlienBBC has been removed
from Plugin main list.

Why do you need the RealAudio streams when there are equally good WMA
streams which need no transcoding.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-11 Thread Triode

With the advent of 7.4 and the changes to BBC stream availablity we
would like to migrate users to the BBCiPlayer plugin for BBC content.

To support this, I have removed AlienBBC from the recommended 3rd Party
repository for the moment. The current version does not actually
support 7.4 and the latest streams fully and so is generating support
questions which are best answered by asking users to switch to
BBCiPlayer.

Alien is still needed to support Real Audio on any Squeezebox or WMA on
Squeezeboxes which do not support this. We will update Alien and
perhaps produce a separate WMA plugin to support this. At this point we
will return it to the recommended lists if requested.

Please post any questions below.

There is a limitation with the alarm functionality which means you
can't use a favorite to store the BBCiPlayer station for an alarm.
Instead do the following: Play the stream you want to listen to on the
