Just wanted to chime in as I am having the same problems as the OP. Love your plugin and very grateful for the time you have put in to it. However my partner has started streaming from her tablet as she can't stand the constant rebuffering. I am running LMS on a Raspbery Pi 2 with Raspbian, and, like the OP, a dodgy Vodaphone homehub type router and homeplugs for the network. Unfortunately changing the home network is not an option as Vodafone have the router completly locked down (do not get broadband from Vodafone). jeztastic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30053 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Thanks for trying. The user with the problems with BBCiPlayer has no problem when playing a http/aac stream which uses the same transcoding setup so the issue is not clear. Your test added another datapoint. Radio has a much bigger internal buffer compared to teh other player so perhaps the buffer size is why problem doesn't show up. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer "rebuffering"
On the DASH thread - even with 1.50 a user on W10 is having rebuffering on live streams. Bizarrely - rebuffering occurs on the high rate 128/320kbps but the low rate of 96/48kbps of same stream won't play at all - DASH or HLS. So my currently hypothesis is that it is a W10 issue (I have a W7 laptop no problems with 48k and also OK with highest I can play is 96k) . Rebuffering seems to be associated with the transcoding process. In previous version of AlienBBC - security s/w caused problem with socketwrapper as they are suspicious by the use of Named Piped for inter process communication - a common entry method used by malware. So I am suspicious of Defender. As a test can you add socketwrapper as a *Process Exclusion* to Windows Defender and see if makes any difference. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I have hardly ever experienced any drop outs from the iPlayer app but I put this down to the fact that I use a business grade ISP (Zen), am relatively close to the Exchange and get close to 80 down and 20 up as a result and, possibly crucially, that I use a business grade router (Draytek Vigor). I often think that people who use the BT Home Hub and the like are working in blissful ignorance and being short changed by BT and their kin. I have heard many many horror stories about wifi dropouts and multiple replacement Home Hubs. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer "rebuffering"
I think the assumption that the "internal network is Ok" may be only half true. A lot of the BBC rebuffering / stuttering issues are to do with poorly performing DNS. I think it is fair to say that most people dont really understand the importance of DNS or how it works (or more accurately doesn't work) in certain situations. A "normal" home network has its DNS settings for all the clients provided by the DHCP server in the router (that was probably provided FOC by your ISP and its ability reflects the cost). Assuming your router is 192.168.1.1. If you bring up a command prompt and do "ipconfig /all" you will probably see that your assigned DNS server is the same IP - 192.168.1.1. So your PC is using your router as its means of resolving IP addresses - except it isn't. The router is acting as a DNS relay and behind the scenes is sending your request to your ISPs DNS servers. Your PC and the router may also be doing some caching. The problem here is a) the Router is usually a low cost device and the DNS relay can often fail or be very slow and b) your ISPs DNS servers may not be the best in terms of speed. Bring up the command prompt again and do "nslookup" and hit enter - if you see 192.168.1.1 or whatever your router's IP address is then you have the above config. Now type at the new > you see - "www.bbc.co.uk" and hit enter. Judge for yourself the response time as the router goes off to your ISP's DNS server and passes on the result. Now type at the > prompt "server 8.8.8.8" and hit enter. What you are doing is switching your PC to temporarily use Google's public DNS server. Type "www.bbc.co.uk" at the > at hit enter. It is highly likely that you will see the speed difference for yourself. Ignore " marks - these are just for emphasis. To exit from nslookup type exit and hit enter and close the command prompt window. The upshot of all this is that you will almost certainly get better results if you use Google's public DNS servers - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You can change the network settings on your PC from "Get DNS servers automatically" to these IPs or you could change the DHCP settings in your router if it allows you to do so. You may be very surprised at just how much faster the "whole internet" becomes just by changing DNS servers. NB Some other DNS servers are as a quick as Google's but don't assume your ISP's ones are. *Vortexbox LMS 7.9 music on QNAP TS419p via NFS* iThingys/iPeng/Tablets *Living Room* - SB3 -> Onkyo TS606 - > Celestion Ditton F20s - Zone 2 -> Sony TA FE 320 -> Sennheiser RS 130 & B P7 *Office* - RPi -> Sony TA FE320 -> Celestion F10s / SB3 -> Onkyo CRN 755 -> Wharfedale Modus Cubes *Dining Room* -> SB Boom *Kitchen* -> UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio) *Bedroom (Bedside)* - SB Touch -> Topping TP21 -> AKG Headphones *Bedroom (TV)* - Amazon Fire TV (SB Player) -> Topping TP20 -> Wharfedale Modus Cubes d6jg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44051 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer "rebuffering"
1.3 version of BBCiPlayer only supports HLS. >From about Feb 2015 this rebuffering has been a known problem and was noted especially in Windows. Possibly Wndows DNS caching is exacerbating the issue. You may have esacape the issues if there were fewer streaming users around until recently or perhaps network/servers were reconfigured. If you are listening to Live and rebuffering make unusuable I suggest changing the "Live" preference to MP3 rather than HLS. "Busy times" are when the networks are busy as the implementation make many TCP conenctions and network/server traffic slows down the connection setup. My feeling is that busy times are about from 4:00pm until about 8:00pm on weekdays but possibly up to midnight as iPlayer servers also serve TV. (i.e. probably fewer rebufferings events from about 9:30am until 4:00pm weekdays). bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

You don't say which version of the BBCiPlayer plugin andwhich protocol you are using nor any details of your setup. In either case if you are playing HLS or DASH streams especially on a WIndows system and at busy times then I believe is an implementation issue - the plugin use HTTP 1.10 which requires a TCP connection per HTTP GET - HLS and DASH streams can result in about 20 GETs per minute . I am looking into how to change the DASH implementation to use HTTP 1.1 which will use a single TCP connection for multiple GETs thus avoiding repeated connection setups/teardowns. [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer "rebuffering"
Recently (for at least a month) when I start iPlayer it says "rebuffering" for 10-15 seconds. After the feed starts to play it drops out a few times due to "rebuffering" starting playing in between each dropout. After 2-3 minutes it plays just fine and carries on without any glitches. This is happening on every physical player I have (Receiver, Duet and Radio) and it also happens on my PC which is connected via ethernet to the BT Router. I can play FLAC files of over 1000kbps to any player (some over Powerline) so my assumption is my internal network is okay, so my guess is the problem is either the iPlayer stream or the external BT network? The BBC website "listen live" takes a few seconds to start on my PC but it works fine after that (no rebuffering). We can watch iPlayer TV shows but only one-at-a-time as our connection is less than 3Mbps. We have lived here for 7 years and iPlayer has worked fine in the past. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? Are there any diagnostics tests I can use to pinpoint the problem? Thanks, FLACforever FLACforever's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=65019 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106230 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
Sorry I've not responded to this earlier - I didn't get a notification of a reply and the problem hadn't reoccurred until today whe the power blipped again and my settings got reset again. It seems the only settings that aren't getting saved are the iPlayer ones - all the standard LMS settings are retained properly. From what I can remember, the installation was done using *squeezeplug_rpi_707* and then iPlayer was added using the standard LMS webinterface to add a new plugin. Not sure if you need any more info or not to advise what may be causing the settings not to be saved. mr nick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
You haven't given any detail about your setup in particular what sort of player and assuming that LMS has moved from a Dell server to a Pi server. The allow transcoding fix is only applicable to players which do not have native AAC playing and support WMA natively. If you are using a player which has native WMA and are gewtting rebuffering - then the issue is in your local network or your connection to BBC (are you in the UK ?) . When player are playing WMA natively, the WMA stream goes directly from BBC to player and server does nothing so the Pi as a server is not an issue unless the Pi is also the player. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
I'm running LMS on the Pi and the players are a Classic and a Boom - the classic is the one that we see the problem with most but that is because it is the one that gets most use, especially for listen again streams. I didn't realise that the transcoding things was neccessarily needed - it was just that the description states Deselect this for low powered servers so I assumed that as I was going from a quad-core Xeon server to a Pi that this was where the problem lay. mr nick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
BBC main format is AAC either in HTTP or Flash and AAC needs transcoding for the older players such as SB3/Classic and Boom. When you prevent transcoding - the iplayer plugin gets the WMA stream and then the player will player it direct from BBC - server does nothing not even passing audio toi player. So if you are getting buffering and your are playing WMA format BBC and you are not sycning player - then the issue is network or connection from BBC to your ISP. This summer BBC has had a number of networking issues and I think they are exacerbated at weekends (typically when maintenance/upgrades are done by BBC and ISPs) and also during big TV event (e.g. World cup, Gofl, Tennis, Atlethics) which load BBC networks. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
I have recently run into this issue with frequent rebuffering. It seems to only happen on listen again streams in my case. The problem coincided with me changing the platform I was running the software on - moved from a full-blown Dell server to a Raspberry Pi. On the Dell unit there was never a problem but after moving to the Pi it was almost impossible to get more than 20 seconds of a listen again stream before rebuffering. After reading a few posts about similar problems, I turned off the 'Allow Transcoding' option and this seemed to do the trick but the issue has re-surfaced since. What I then found when I went back to the iPlayer setting was the transcoding option had turned back on. It seems that despite using the 'save settings' button, the settings are actually only saved as long as the server is running and after I reboot the setting reverts back to the default 'on'. As I'm using a Pi it ordinarily stays running 24/7 but we tend to suffer a lot of power blips here which drop out our power for a second or two and thus the server gets inadvertently rebooted, often without me knowing - until I play a listen again and find it to be rebuffering. So my question is Does the allow transcoding option turn back on by design or is this a bug? If it is a bug, is it common to all platforms or is it specific to the Raspberry Pi? Is it likely down to a permissions issue on a particular file? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. mr nick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
Until recently BBC iPlayer worked fine on my SB. But for the last few days it rebuffers so often that the streams are unlistenable. I am wondering how to find out the cause of the problem and how to cure it. SB Classic, LMS 7.8 running on an iMac with OS 10.9.2. The only change I am aware of is that I recently installed the latest security update. The problems seem to have started after that. Also I had needed to shutdown and restart my iMac a few times (no problems with the computer, but my electric wiring had some work done on it so the power was shut off). danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Flash/AAC, WMA or MP3) are you listening to - each format has a different network so changing format may help also SB3 can play WMA natively ()so no local LMS host issue) but AAC require transcoding and possible local host issues. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer rebuffering
As so often happens, the problem disappears after posting about it. I have just been listening to a Listen Again programme for two hours, with only a couple of very short drops. The problem could have been with my internet connection, but I have a feeling that it was somewhere else, that something is going on that clears up after the SB has been on (not standby) for an hour or so. And that this has to work itself through again after each time I turn the computer on. My normal practice is to keep the computer on for weeks at a time, so I would not normally run into such a situation, but my recent need to shut it down several times might have led to the issue. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
