Pi3 is not my standard system so I cannot remember all the variations
tested with previous problem.

IIRC - my CD/DVD/BD with a micro B USB3 connected has a Y connector
(i.e. use two USB sockets on Pi3) but it was fussy about what other
devices were connected directly into Pi. I think problems were with some
HID devices (e.g. keyboards, USB1 ?)

There may also be other issues if Pi uses wired network connenction as
Ethernet will then be shared with CD drive.

That's good. CD drives draw different amounts of power depending on
activity (e.g. insert cd, disk spin up) and so a working drive can
later appear to fail.

OK.

On image I see Antika drive has USB3 (blue insert) connector - which
means it may require a USB3 port to get enough power. There are no USB3
ports on a Pi3

If you look at posts a few months ago, there was a very very long
interaction with another user where a CD drive just didn't work on a Pi.
In the end - gave up trying to make the drive work with the Pi.

So be prepared - some CD/DVD/BD drives do not work on some Pis - not
sure the reason.
I tested two different drives on my Pi3 & Pi4 and they worked OK with no
special tweak or changes except using a USB hub as I have USB mouse and
keyboard.

Main issue - POWER.

If you can - make sure CD drive is powered separate through a separate
USB hub.

In the meantime - full details - so that perhaps I can test a simlar
setup.
What model Pi ?
What model CD/DVD drive ?
Does CD drive have a USB Y-connector or its own separate power supply ?
What other USB devices are plugged into the Pi ?

I found one track on one CD which would always be displayed wrong on
Windows and OK on Linux. I think I have a fix for this issues which I
think may be the same as yours.

The decode routine I use (*Encode::decode_utf8* which is equivalent to
*Encode::decode("utf8",$str)* ) to convert string into UTF-8 apparently
doesn't always, there are time when it doesn't. Although reason are not
clear, it may be related to locale - Linux locales tends to be utf8
whereas windows is cp1252
Attached is modified version of a file in the plugin. CDPLAY.pm - its
use the *Encode::decode("UTF-8",$str)* which should always convert into
UTF-8. It seems utf8 is not the same as UTF-8 or even utf-8 - all
different. I can't see the point in having a conversion routine that
only sometimes converts !

The attached CDPLAY.pm is to be installed in the LMS
Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugs/CDplayer

Stop LMS, replace the CDPLAY.pm file and then restart LMS and see it it
makes a difference.

I think I narrowed it down to a library routine (which should be solid)

I appreciate all your efforts with this. I guess some would just accept
the glitch... It's the classic itch which demands scratching...

I'd hate to see the plugin just fade away as it has proved ideal for my
wife who can't handle streaming very easily.

Very very very few people use the plugin, especially on windows (after
win10 messes up CD drive stuff with new handling of fake scsi over usb)
and then usually to try out a CD.
It is a plugin that should be left to fade away.

The only reason I am still chasing this as it looks like a Windows LMS
bug

Not sure it is good or bad news.
Overnight the Windows system that was working OK, is now giving the
errors. Some cache must have expired - which could add another layer of
complexity.

The display problem is that strings which are UTF8 encoded are not
recognised as such on Windows/LMS and are re-encoded whereas on
Linux/LMS they are recognised as UTF8 and so left alone.

Now to figure where the error is happening.

Encoding in URL:
Gymnop%C3%A9dies

Linux:
Gymnop\xC3\xA9dies -> Gymnop\u00E9dies
Gymnopédies

Windows:
Gymnop\xC3\x83\xC2\xA9dies -> Gymnop\u00C3\u00A9dies
Gymnopédies

Nothing to do with the actual CD.

This is all to do with metadata encoding/decoding.
Since the letter encoding in the URL is the same - even the actual CD
doesn't matter.
Since there was a change between 8.2 and 8.3 for me - there is some LMS
factor in this - I suspect some tiny part of the CDplayer plugin is out
of date (created in 2008) due to a change in LMS and or Perl as LMS on
Windows uses 5.14 (2011) whereas most Linux are all something like 5.30

It can depend on your installation (e.g. service) - squeezetray may give
you an update option.

For my installation.

Download latest 8.3.0
Stop LMS.
Stop squeezetray
run download as adminstrator - don't start anything after install.
Run squeezetray as administrator and use it to start LMS.

I eventually got a version of cdda2wav to work -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/cdrtoolswin/

Don't know why all the previous versions just broke. Windows is horrible
about keeping lots of old DLLs and then caching them.

Anyhow.

I see your problem with LMS 8.2.0 and when I install 8.3.0 - I see the
correct display.

Please upgrade to 8.3.0 or at least 8.2.1

That may help - Queue and Now playing metadata come from one routine.
Strange thing is that exact same code is used to derive "title" string
etc. from the cdplay:// URL - why is the display different in two
places ?

Since it only affects your Windows and AFAICT not mine - need to do more

What version of LMS and Windows do you have ?

Can you get a screenshot of the problem track URL as it is displayed in
the "More" part of Material.

For example - this show the Text with an Accent and also the UTF8 URL
encoded (%C3%A9).

I have used my test CDs.

The French accents show up OK on both Windows and Linux - browser
(default & Material) and player.
The chinese characters (a tougher UTF8 test - different page) - shows
up OK on Linux but not on Windows. Player doesn't have Chinese chars in
font - so can't validate.

Looks like a Windows issue. I know I tested this before - so I think
this is a new Windows issue either Win10 or possibly LMS /Win build
(IIRC new libraries were created last year)

Allthe plugin does is pass the metadata received from MB as part of the

The problem is while using LMS on Windows.

Further testing shows the problem is restricted to the Now Playing
screen (same issue on Material apk, Web ui and on Touch Now Playing)

The data is from MusicBrainz

I don't know how to get the ID while using Windows - here's the link to
the album

I have "test" CDs with french, german and chinese characters and they
display OK.

I am away at the momeent so cannot give instrcution on testing.
Its always UTF8 - the issues is usually a Browser doesn't realize it
occassionally the source is badly/incorrectly encoded.

However more info is always helpful such as
what platform ?
what UI ? if web waht type of browser ?
what is being displayed ? (i.e. screen shot of incorrect text) ?
If problem UI is browser - is it OK on Radio/Touch ?
Is it metadata from MB/CDDB or CDtext ?

Just finished setting up a dedicated server for the Asus cd player -
using one of these mini pcs:

https://www.amazon.com/-/es/ventilador-ordenador-sobremesa-Ethernet-silencioso/dp/B09DTZCZVN/ref=sr_1_11?crid=53093GCSMR8=mele+mini+pc=1645187290=Mele+mini%2Caps%2C338=8-11

I already had the mini Pc which wasn't really being used for much.

Not quite the all-in-one raspi setup I had hoped to get working, but it
worked out-of-the-box (almost).with just the one data cable.

I may return to wrangling the pi3 when I get a powered hub.

Tried again with new install and same settings as far as I could
recall... No luck.

I'm going to exchange the cd for a different one to see what happens.

Meanwhile, I can set up a win10 pc as an exclusive CDplayer for other
half to use. Using Material I can strip down the menus to avoid
confusion with too many choices.

Thanks for all your patience and advice.

You've had odd and inconsistent issues such as sudden appearance of
"under voltage" messages.

With Pi's (and I have 1,3 & 4) - with USB devices whose power demand can
significantly vary according to activity, such as GSM, CD drive or DVB-S
stick, after many instances of dodgy boots and inexplicable failures, I
always use a powered Hub (either separate or integrated in a monitor)
which can deliver full rating out of each socket - it also means device
is fed from a single PSU. I don't know if it is always required but it
seems to make things reliable.

That said, newer CD drives have smaller power requirements so I'm
surprised at the varied difficulties you're having.

Thanks for the explanation. - very helpful.

I tried the Asus using only the data cable with a win 10 notebook -
worked without any problems.

So it looks like it's the power issues on the 3b which cause all the
problems.

CD-Text menu comes from text that is on a special section of the CD
itself but not all CDs carry this (also you'll get no artwork).

There is no eject command in Windows (only an API using a hard to find
different device designator) - so there is no Eject option under Windows

The MusicBrainz database has multiple entries of the same MusicBrainz
ID. Often this is because users creating multiple entries for same CD
under different genres. Sometimes it is for same CD but released in
different countries. Sometime a MusciBrainz ID matches more than one CD.
No way to know what the user wants so plugin displays all matching
results.

The MB ID for the Springsteen CD is LhmA8KXkeU5VZPrbgpj4Zx4R.X0-
check out the MusicBrainz entry

The missing metadata is specific to some CDs with hidden tracks. It is

For most Linux - a USB CD drive appears as a SCSI bus device so it will
be either /dev/sr0 or /dev/cdrom
Often /dev/cdrom is linked to the real device so that bus specific
device can be ignored

Look in /dev/ directory

use "icedax --scanbus" to see if the drive is online and ready for use.
I think the plugin will offer valid devices.

Like all good problems it required more than one issue.
1. A difference between icedax and cdda2wav, cdda2wav exposes hidden CD
track, icedax doesn't expose hidden track.
2. A CD with a hidden track - not common.
3. MusicBrainz ID is calculated using "Normal" track and does not
include hidden track

AFAICT Hidden CD track is an exploitation of a valid feature in CD
structure. I think your CD is using the feature correctly.

There is no good list of CDs with hidden track so I don't know if I has
a CD in my collection to test. I'll try a selection on my Win10 (in an
idle moment).

Power from USB port can affect Pi reliable booting.
Power from USB port cannot boot a Pi but once a pi is running it may be
possible to remove main PSU and Pi to keep running using power form USB
port.

To power down Pi properly, after shutdown (e.g. pcp sd), you should
remove power from Pi (via PSU) and also unplug power to CD drive.
To power up - apply power to CD drive first and then after all CD drive
clicking stops, then apply power to Pi.

Bizarrely - the two drive or icedax vs cdda2wav behave differently.

The Pi drive says 8 tracks and TOC shows T01 to T08
The Win10 drive says 8 tracks and shows T00 to T08 - 9 tracks and says
"hidden audio track found" - which I think is ignored but my parser
doesn't.

That is even now weirder than the first problem. Make me a bit
suspicious of the Pi H/W - something is borderline. Power up sequence
may matter if +5V power travels from CD drive into Pi. Can't remember
if Pi3 could be powered from USB ports (Pi1 could be).

I suspect the initial offset of zero for T00 might be the problem - zero
is unusual. If there is careless test in the code - a value of zero will
cause a problem.

Interesting - different Disc ID calculated for the same CD. Yet it
worked OK for the Springsteen CD - so it is not always wrong.

It would good to figure where the problem lies.
Whenever it suits. For this problem CD for both Pi and Win10 can you do
a log with plugin.cdplayer set to DEBUG and just enter "CDplayer" menu
from Extras.

The log lines of interest are all the
"Plugins::CDplayer::Fork::checkFork " lines as all the track details are

Here's the log for the same CD on the pi:

The Disc ID is calculated from the TOC and is
*ziZe4rTCUbofrHB0an0IQTWRdWU-*
There is no record in MusicBrainz for the disc. Unusual but not
unprecedented I have found many examples.

However if this CD is found using CDplayer on Pi - that is strange. If
so can you repeat the log with the same CD on the Pi. They should create
the same Disc ID.

Need to see what is happening with MB lookup request which occurs just
after CD TOC is read.

1. Set logging plugin.cdplayer to INFO
2. Go into CD player menu.
3. If you want you can turn reset plugin.cdplayer logging to ERROR

The win10 plugin is set to Musicbrainz ...

Single menu item - CD Tracks-raw format

Thanks as ever! I have a spare win10 pc, so given the hassle with the
pi, I'm thing of using win10 if I can get the menus working. I'll check
musicbrainz and report back.

CDplayer seems to bring out the worst in systems. I thought Win10 was
bad.

I've experienced Pi's USB quirks besides CD also with GSM/Mobile
dongles, often chipset related so that certain combos just fail. I have
a dish of 4 BT dongles - and eventually gave up on BT.

It is worth trying a powered USB hub and possibly older USB 2.0 found in
a drawer. Although even then I had to make a special cable which cut the
+5V line on the HUB to Pi connection - it kept the Pi alive when PSU was
unplugged.

This should be easy to fix. Metadata lookup has nothing to do with
playing the CD except initial CD TOC load gives the "key" to lookup.
Check Plugins settings is set to MusicBrainz.
The plugin just does a HTTP/GET on MusicBrainz website - so if it i
failing there is something blocking that call.

Oh dear...

Run into a problem: using the otg speed set to 1 knocks the bluetooth
dongle transmission into short burst of sound.
If I use the internal Bluetooth then the cd doesn't give any sound.

I guess it's because the speed 1 setting applies to all ports, and I
imagine there's no way to apply the otg speed 1 to just individual
ports.

So, the outcome is either cd or Bluetooth but not both g!

I switched over to using a win10 setup where sound works! But then
another catch appears - the cd player menu shows only 1 entry (raw
format), no album titling and no eject. Double grrr!

I'm not sure how to proceed - give up, run 2 separate Pi's, or stick
with the single menu win10 for cds only.

The "Play Album" problem is only with Jive UI (e.g. Touch,
Radio,Squeezeplay). It sounds like it's working OK with Material and
you had problems testing from a Radio.

The plugin was was written Jive UI was new, the idea of a very slow
storage (i.e. mustn't hang LMS waiting), I didn't have experience in the
menu and LMS didn't have the later APi which make it easier to do
dynamic menus (e.g. streaming services) - so it was done in a clunky way
and needs a refresh but its use (i.e. no of downloads) was practically
zero for many years and there were other plugins needed work.

You may be right about vinyl/CD revival. I also have more experience in
the menu so I'll have a look an see if it can be fixed with limited
effort.

I had tried various cdda2wav parameters to slow down the execution of CD
reads (e.g. remove overlapped reads) but none made any significant
difference. New drives have big internal buffers and intelligent drive
controllers and so perhaps "tweaks" no longer affect read time.

The requirement for USB 2.0 may be more important if you want to burn a
CD with the drive at speeds such as 12x, 16x or 24x. USB 1.0 (12Mb/sec)
is more than adequate to read a CD audio stream (1.5Mb/sec) while
buffering the data.

I am using the default interface in Web browser (Edge).

Normally, I would use material.apk.

I looked at that setting, I thought it makes the USB 1.1 compatible
(e.g. for old keyboards) and I thought your CD had to be USB 2.0 and so
dismissed it.

Well done.

What UI are you using ?
I think this is an old UI bug. With one press, you can play full albums
from webUI and old IP3k players but not from Jive UI.

I've tried many "simple" fixes but didn't work.
To get around it, I'll have to rewrite the menus.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: CDplayer plugin

2022-02-13 Thread castalla

I noticed the under voltage errors only when testing today...

It's bizarre... It works with cdd2wav.exe and plugin on win10 (although
the menu only shows raw option) while pcp shows all menu items but the
blighter has no sound.

CD drive reset occurs around same time as over voltage - not clear which
one is cause and which is effect.

I don't under stand the practical difference between "under-voltage"
(PSU not up to task) and "over-current" (USB device too greedy). I would
thought that an "over-current" should occurs at the time time as
"under-voltage" if the USb devices were the fault.

In theory, a USB powered Hub would isolate the power draw of USB devices
from the Pi3 and in turn may avoid the "under-voltage" IF (and only if)
the USB current draw is the issue.

Latest test is with 5v 2.4 amp power. No extender.
