multiple installs one database
I am needing to be able to access email and other files from various locations, and have set up a Dropbox account to facilitate that (1: http://www.dropbox.com )... it maintains sync of files placed in it's folder between various locations using the same account via internet. Totally transparent and very nice. So my question is two-fold: it is possible to have 3 or more installs of Powermail be able to access a single database folder, and/or is it possible for more than one user to access a database folder at a time, or more specifically, is the database capable of autosave from multiple locations at the same time without corrupting? I ask this 'corruption' question because I already know, and it has been documented, that there is an issue in this regard using Dropbox with Filemaker, and we've had to take measures to ensure safety in that regard. Also: is it possible to have separate databases on a single install for different email accounts? Does this even make sense to you? On Sun, Oct 26, 2003, it is attributed to Scott at HobbyLink Japan to have said: BTW. What percentage of the hard drive should be left free for disk operations with OS X? Joe Kissel, in his fine Tid-Bits Taking Control mini-book about updating to Panther (available at www.tidbits.com/takecontrol for $5) says that you should leave at least twice the size of your physical RAM available as open hard disk space for your day-to-day operations. I don't recall where, but it seems to me that 20% of raw drive space (per partition) is a number I read somewhere. Mind, with the (comparatively) immense drives we have these days, that seems like a lot. Speaking of drives: I remember the HD on a Performa 5200 crapping out under warranty. Apple Canada was short of stock, and replaced the existing 500 MB w/ an 800MB drive. I tell ya, it felt like I'd won the lottery!! Times have changed, eh? Now I read where the new Adobe Suite (CS) needs over a gig just to install the apps.. that doesn't even START to talk about scratchdisk needs. -- later, JS I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. I don't seem to have ANY File In pop up menu anywhere, whether in 2-panes, 3-panes, Recent Mail, open or closed message window, whatever. Funny thing is, I remember having such a menu at some point, though whether this was in PM, Claris Emailer or Apple's Mail app... I think Claris Emailer had a contextual menu - clicking on a message brought up the list of all available folders. Well, that is indeed odd, because it sure is there in my rev of the app (4.2).. but only in the 'single message' mode (very nice GUI, btw... Wishlist items
I have come back to PowerMail after a month or so with Eudora 6 (a many- year Eudora user who was converted to PM last winter, and just had to see what was new and exciting at the ol' alma mater!) I have to say, PM is a LOT more elegant! Thanks, team! But it is also a lot slower at a number of processes... esp. emptying the trash type stuff. Seems that moving files is considered heavy lifting. Not a big deal, but notable. I have a wishlist. 1... Transfer mail. AFAIK, currently the only way to move mail from one box to another is via drag'n'drop. I dunno about you, but I have missed my target more than once... what a pain. Also, I have a lot of mailboxes and folder/subfolders... can be a pain to navigate. A menu item that would transfer selected mail to a folder listed in the menu would reduce both those problems. 2... Stationery. I often used stationery in Eudora.. because it was easy to access. Not so easy in PM. There is room beside the 'clippings' icon in the compose window!! 3... Reply. Can we add 'Reply using Stationery'? 4... Junk filtration. Eudora 6 now has a 'Junk' filter based on Bayesian algorithms... absolutely brilliant. I didn't know spam could be KO'ed that easily. I realize that there is SpamSieve available on PM.. but it lacks (imo) the transparency that the Eudora implementation has. Fortunately, I really only have one email addie that is chronic for spam... so what I have done is that I now do not collect it in PM, but occasionally launch Eudorato collect the mail from that account. Anyhow.. a few things I thought might improve PM even more. -- later, JS I learned there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead, and some come from behind. Don't know if you are using classic or x but the same probably applies to both. The only thing I can think of is that when trying to import to FileMaker, when navigating to the file to import, in the navigation window, 'show files of type tabbed text' rather than 'all useable' (or whatever). Then do the import. When I did this everything imported OK. No problem with getting the file... the problem is with the physical import. I could take some screenshots and set up a page, if that would help.
