Yes, you'll say USA is the land of the free and similar bs. But why

There are plenty of bluetooth mice, trackpads and keyboards to choose
from. You can get an adaptor to connect the output to any typical monitor or
 projector.

One of the cool Apple-only advantages is AirPlay, where you can direct
the audio and/or video output to another device on the local network. I have

The point Jean raises is fully valid: when building a web app to replace an

expense of rebuilding the business user knowledge that was capitalized
into the desktop app for years. At down the road application misses it's
target of satisfying users needs, just because users don't want to accept /
understand that a web app could deliver less than they previously got ...
hey, you just changed to a browser, why should it be different?

And, from a user's standpoint, that's undoubtedly a valid argument.

We at FoxInCloud do view moving an app to the web as just adding another UI
 - web - to the application. There is no reason why all the accumulated user
interaction and business competence should be lost because of a new user
 interface technology.

Software is not reborn because web app have appeared in 2005. Web app
should, IMHO, just be the successor, the latest evolution for what was
built over the 25 past years.

As one of those developers who have replaced desktop apps the users
LIKE getting a clean slate and getting rid of that antiquated bloated
monster for a new clean run at doing business.

Instead of telling users how it will be you have to ask them. YMMV

That assumes the old app was crap, and that the users didn't like it.
 Sure...new/replacement would surely be welcomed.

And, we should remember that an app may be a disaster from a
programmer's point of view, but the user sees it differently.
We might know the app is hell to update or change, has ugly code, and
will not escalate, but the end user couldn't care less. All he sees is
the UI, and how responsive the app is.

Nope, you're missing the point in your eagerness to get onto an anti-MS

else. That's really all we know at the minute, and if that is the extent

Well, maybe both missed each other's points. I don't think I've seen the
entire thread, but this is what I see:

Ricardo is saying he doesn't want MS (or probably any company) to touch his
apps/data on his PC without his permission.

Alan is saying other companies currently can do a remote app (and data?)
kills on phones and tablets (Google and Apple - although I'll have to look
into the Android thing - I don't remember seeing that).

I think the thread started specifically about Windows 8, which may be why
Apple/Google wasn't a focus. Of course, they are clearly different
platforms. Also, the number of companies that behave a certain way does not
mean that way is ethical, good, or beneficial to consumers (the people
that pay the money). I think Google/Apple were emboldened by MS's past
license statements (i.e.they reserve the right to change stuff on your
computer at any time). So Google/Apple put in their backdoors for remote
control. And since they did it MS feels emboldened to do it for PCs.

Mike B pointed out I predicted this (Windows remote-kill) a while back.
Thanks for that memory-trip Mike :). One thing I didn't see or extrapolate
was that other companies would embrace MS practices when they saw they got
away with it over and over. We (computer/software professionals) have
pretty much failed the world in this regard. Our laziness* and desire for
the easy-buck** has led to this pitiful situation. So if any developer gets
bit by some unexpected update, remote-kill, backdoor-hijack, bank account
hack, or stolen identity, just remember: it's your own fault. Your silence
and acquiescence to MS's progression down this path is what got us here. I
include myself in this - while I haven't been an MS fan for the past decade
or more, I have only had small victories (e.g. killed .Net projects where
possible, got open source into the workplace, etc). I should have done
much, much more. So when I work on Windows computers I have to expect
failures, hacks, or corruptions. In personal life, I'm trying to help
family/friends get off the MS wagon to atone for my decades-ago
recommendation to go with MS software.

 -Charlie

*-laziness: unwilling to research and embrace technologies outside the
MS-bandwagon. Not actually understanding the science behind computer
technology to be able to see through marketing hyperbole of any vendor.
**-easy-buck: getting paid to do the same thing over and over because MS
said do it a different way... over and over. And heck, I get paid by the
company, not some end user. So why the hell should I care about what's best
for them in the long run.

Hear, hear!

Absolutely, straight from the SQLEXEC() entry in the VFP Help file:

H...so I'm wondering why this isn't working? Odd. Thanks.

Must be a limitation with the ODBC driver for this MariaDB database.
 I'm doing this simple test:

 lcSQL = 'select * from table 1 limit 2;'
 ? sqlexec(giHandle,lcSQL) this works fine

 lcSQL = lcSQL +  select * from table2 limit 3
 ? sqlexec(giHandle,lcSQL) this fails

Error dialogue box says Connectivity error: [MySQL][ODBC 5.1
 Driver][mysqld-5.3.2-MariaDB] You have an error in your SQL syntax;
check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL version for the right
syntax to use near 'select * from table2 limit3' at line 1

I know this works for SQL Server, but has anyone gotten the multiple
results thingie working for non-SQL-Server backends? I'm sure but would
 enjoy the confirmation.

 Thanks.

Works fine with SQLServer 2005. More than 10 cursors recieved at once.

Yes. Munich is also showing the scope of the switch. Despite being started
almost a decade ago, it's only in the past two years that they are pushing
out desktops to all employees. This has been made easier with the increase
of web-based software and the broad adoption of Java in the enterprise

I'm convinced that the model of the Windows based desktop is fading away

You car has electric wiring a few miles long. How exactly would having a

Ich burstoten mit arstonen fur und achtarbichter.

Or playing it naif : less weight to carry (the electric wiring)
therefore less energy to move the car and I am saving gas. I'm happy,
personally happy.

Now think back to the last public servant you encountered, maybe a police
officer, the lady from the US post office or the TSA guy on your last visit
to the airport: How does it help them having the source code of Linux?

Let's see, the state does not pay royalties for the OS, ergo less
expenses, ergo less taxes, and voilà, they (and everyone else) likes it.
Then, the state uses non proprietary file formats, then a) the citizen
is not forced into some foreign company's formats and democracy is
served, b) the citizen is not forced to pay for foreign company's
programs and the exchange balance is served. The german police lady is a
citizen so she is served.
Then, the state uses an OS without back doors and state secrets and
commercial secrets are better kept, everybody is happy.

OTOH, a US company gets less revenue, so more US unemployment and the
aforementioned (by you) US post office lady is NOT happy well,
life's tough.

Sure!

For example it should never be allowed to tell commerce what to sell or
not. Ergo drugs should be allowed.
It should never be allowed to tell groups what to buy or not. So
monopolies and cartels should be allowed, even though that would
invalidate the free play of prices.
Hospitals are also commerce. The state should never be allowed to
regulate them.
Food is also commerce. The state should never be allowed to mess with
that market, or to say what may or may not be sold and in what way. Sod
the cold chain, let the buyer beware.
It should never be allowed to dictate what to import or export. So China
would be able to export to USA whatever and as much as it wants. So
would Cuba.
It should never be allowed to dictate with which country to do business
or visit. So USA citizens would be able to go to Cuba.

I hate those US commies who forbade for decades commerce with Cuba!
