[qmailtoaster] Password complexity and/or expiry time

2009-05-06 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Hi list,

Is there a way to configure vpopmail to enforce password complexity,
expiry time and things like that?

I did not found anything, and I've suffered from easy guessable passwords
for my roaming users giving wrong-doers the ability to use me as a relay,
every now and then, and I'm getting sick of it :-(.

   I didn't find anything related nowhere :-S

Some clues?

If you pay for the download of CentQMT5 you will get a better download
speed.

I've throttled the speed on the free download of QMTISO. If you get a
really slow speed, it's because other people are downloading it at the
same time. I throttled the total bandwidth used, not on a per-IP basis.
Since the free version averages 10+ downloads per day, the server sees a
lot of traffic. They're 700M files, remember. I'm sending this email 3
hours after you sent yours and I see 7 people downloading the thing
right now.

I understand your frustration, and since I put Qmailtoaster on
Sourceforge a week or so ago (at least I registered it) I may move the
ISO over there to use their bandwidth. Otherwise I'm going to drop the
whole free ISO download. It's been downloaded 13879 times (that's
9715300M worth of downloads) and not one single person has ever hit the
donate button or gotten me anything off of the Amazon list (for those
that didn't want to donate money). It does cost me money to run things
like this - and the ISO is a big sink due to bandwidth.

Thanks for the reply Jake.
Your job is great and for sure i don't want to blame on you.  It was
just a simple request, I will see what i can do.
For the donate i can understand you well I've a site that provide free
online RPG (role playing game) by browser from agoust 2001 and in 9
years i haven't recive a single donation even if the donate button is
pretty much visible and it cost me money too running that site. The
point is i think it's something we do for passion. Anyway i don't want
to go Out of Topic that was just a note.

Sure, you have a couple of choices,
- remove spamdyke
- add
RDNS exclusions for all the IPs your clients use

Because
587 hasn't come to full acceptance YET, client applications like Outlook
lack the wizard settings to flip this easily.  There are several
sites that show how to make these changes, in fact, I made one myself for
my customers.  I have over 50 domains and an average of 30 users per
domain.  Yes, it's a painful pill to have to swallow but in a lot of
cases you won't have any choice.  It's better to get it over with
now.  I have also run into a few broadband providers that block port
25 all together (Comcast RCN)!  They only allow you to use 25
to their server or you use 587.  This is a huge boost for spam
prevention because it keeps the low lifes of the world from putting up a
spam server.

You can find instructions on disabling spamdyke on the wiki page.

I don't think you want to do that though. Your roaming/remote users
should not be blocked by spamdyke if they authenticate successfully.
Spamdyke bypasses all filters for authenticated connections. I'd check
into why authentication is not apparently working.

Did you use qtp-install-spamdyke to install spamdyke?
Which version are you running?

Sure, you have a couple of choices,
   - remove spamdyke
   - add RDNS exclusions for all the IPs your clients use

Because 587 hasn't come to full acceptance YET, client applications like
Outlook lack the wizard settings to flip this easily. There are several
sites that show how to make these changes, in fact, I made one myself
for my customers. I have over 50 domains and an average of 30 users per
domain. Yes, it's a painful pill to have to swallow but in a lot of
cases you won't have any choice. It's better to get it over with now.
I have also run into a few broadband providers that block port 25 all
together (Comcast RCN)! They only allow you to use 25 to their server
or you use 587. This is a huge boost for spam prevention because it
keeps the low lifes of the world from putting up a spam server.

Hiii,

But i think thats not the only solution. What if i am an ISP??? Should
 i
tell all my customers not to use port 25??? I have 5 virtual domains

nearly 500 employees and i cannot guide daily every that please do not
 use
port 25 instead use 587. most of the users just know how to send
 recieve
and read write emails they dont understand how to change setting etc.
 So
practically sometimes it becomes very difficult to teach them on the

You can find instructions on disabling spamdyke on the wiki page.

I don't think you want to do that though. Your roaming/remote users should
not be blocked by spamdyke if they authenticate successfully. Spamdyke
bypasses all filters for authenticated connections. I'd check into why
authentication is not apparently working.

Did you use qtp-install-spamdyke to install spamdyke?
Which version are you running?

The error you've posted above is a message generated by Postfix. It
looks like the place you're trying to send a message to is denying your
message because you have no reverse DNS set up for your mail server.
This would have nothing to do with qmailtoaster and actually would show
that your qmailtoaster is functioning correctly. It got the message from
your Outlook client and is attempting to send it to gnvfc.net, but
they're denying the message since you do not have rDNS.

u can check urself my mailserver for RDNS. 210.212.133.110 points to
mail.gnfc.in and 203.77.193.20 points at mail.gnvfc.net

mail.gnfc.in has only TrendMicro IMSS installed on it and not a
qmailtoaster installation its a custom installation done by someone else
before i joined this company.
mail.gnvfc.net is complete installed by myself and is a qmailtoaster
installation.

the transcript i sent u in last mail says that an email was sent by
mail.gnfc.in to a user on mail.gnvfc.net.
mail.gnfc.in is sending it to mail.gnvfc.net but is denied/refused and
the mail kept laying in the queue of mail.gnfc.in.

hence mail.gnvfc.net (qmailtoaster) is refusing the clients ip address in
the mail header and not the ip address of the mail server mail.gnfc.in.
which is not included in the transcript i have sent u earlier.

So on the QMT machine, what does it show when you lookup the rDNS of the
sending box? Try restarting bind as well and see if that effects the
cache.
Also post relevant logs from the QMT machine showing the message and it's
rejection.

The easiest way to accept mail from misconfigured servers with spamdyke
is to whitelist the sending domain. Add:

@gnfc.in
to /etc/spamdyke/whitelist_senders file.

Any suggestions as to what my trigger this?

I found references to PDFs having this problem via googling/etc, but
not word documents...

Look in your spam logs (/var/log/qmail/spamd) and your clamav log
(/var/log/qmail/clamd) and see what is causing it to bounce.
Are you running an older version that still has the badmimetypes and
badloadertypes that may be catching it?

Re: [qmailtoaster] QMT-ISO and download speed

2009-05-06 Thread Ernie Regaspi

Jake Vickers wrote:

Alberto Guzzetti wrote:
/It's come to my attention that some people are abusing my work by
bogging my server down with multiple downloads. I've already limited
the bandwidth since downloads BURIED a 3M connection, but then I
started to get complaints from users who were unable to download the
software or it was very slow. I started to investigate and saw that
cerain users (such as IP 61.7.216.10) were opening 20+ download
sessions. I've installed a module to limit the number of downloads
per IP address now, so hopefully this should solve the problem caused
by some crap-heads out there.

/Okay, It's pretty understandable what you did but actually the
download speed is: 9.5-13.8 KB/sec this is lower then an old 56K
modem. For downloading 569 MB it take 1 day and X hours.
So the /have a working mail server in about 30 minutes. /it's
pretty much a fake. Any chance to have a better download speed, please?

If you pay for the download of CentQMT5 you will get a better download
speed.

I've throttled the speed on the free download of QMTISO. If you get a
really slow speed, it's because other people are downloading it at the
same time. I throttled the total bandwidth used, not on a per-IP
basis. Since the free version averages 10+ downloads per day, the
server sees a lot of traffic. They're 700M files, remember. I'm
sending this email 3 hours after you sent yours ouand I see 7 people
downloading the thing right now.

I understand your frustration, and since I put Qmailtoaster on
Sourceforge a week or so ago (at least I registered it) I may move the
ISO over there to use their bandwidth. Otherwise I'm going to drop the
whole free ISO download. It's been downloaded 13879 times (that's
9715300M worth of downloads) and not one single person has ever hit
the donate button or gotten me anything off of the Amazon list (for
those that didn't want to donate money). It does cost me money to run
things like - and the ISO is a big sink due to bandwidth.

Alberto,

Jake is right. what you can do is install the base OS (if you already
had one), download the qmail packages and install them manually.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Invalid Message Content Error With .DOC Attachment?

Greetings All,

A client is complaining that all of a sudden, a regular mailing he
receives with a .doc (M$ Word attachment) is bouncing:

  DATA
  554 invalid message content (#5.3.2)
 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable

Any suggestions as to what my trigger this?

I found references to PDFs having this problem via googling/etc, but
not word documents...

Look in your spam logs (/var/log/qmail/spamd) and your clamav log
(/var/log/qmail/clamd) and see what is causing it to bounce.
Are you running an older version that still has the badmimetypes and
badloadertypes that may be catching it?
Hmm. No apparent trace in either log. Yes, I've still got
badmimetype/loadertypes.

The strange thing is, our clients regularly receive .doc and .pdf
attachments without issue...

Right, but those signatures you see there get matched by any part of the
message, including the MIME. Try commenting them all out, cdb'ing, and
seeing if it will allow that file then. I used to get false positives
with PDF files a long time ago. Check the archives and you'll see a
thread on it.

How should I post the log files? I tried earlier (as txt attachments)
and my message bounced.

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's

because it contains the Sanesecurity.Junk.8539.UNOFFICIAL virus

I'm curious how a log file could carry a virus?

Anyway, should I copy/paste the logs direct to email text? Please
advise.

Thank you,

I haven't seen any errors yet. Until the machinery became unstable,
and we decided to update (finally), it had been working perfectly
since we built the load over 4 years ago, so I've rather forgotten
where to look for the logs that have any errors.

I'm going to try to copy the queue files (to the old server) and run
the utility shortly (now that I've put the old one back online
 successfully).

On the new server, show us the /var/log/qmail/smtp/current and
/var/log/qmail/send/current log files (or at least parts of them). This
will help us begin to understand what may be wrong with the new
installation.
