[QUAD-L] Armchair police of Mexicans

2005-06-09 Thread reelquick
As you put it Lori " all this armchair police of the Mexicans is futile" is not so. things can be done about them. there is a group that I correspond with that are now waging battle in Washington against some of the things that Bush is proposing. One of the matters is : that Mexicans not be allowed to have driver's liscenses unless they are here legally. and it passed in the house of rep. but I have been sick with Bronchitis and have not kept up with it.
Here in KY the Mexicans get free health care thru the board of health.
There are Mexicans working on expired work permits for the state of KY. the govt chooses to look the other way because they claim you can't get the americans to do the jobs they would do.
They are living several families to each apartment. The crime rate here is high. If you look at the court dockets you will see that every other court case has a hispanic name. there are been several murders committed here by Mexicans.
There are certain subdivisions you don't go to anymore because you will get mugged. and they used to be decent places to live. The town is overrun with them. The north side town Walmart you don't go there at night. They even have a police station there to keep control of the Mexicans. Walmart has several aisles in the grocery part dedicated to mexican foods. and the strange thing is if you ever get behind some of them in line...they all have cash to pay. this means they are working under the table for their wages. We charge or write checks and they pay cash.
Sorry you can't have it both ways...either get rid of them or accept them.
Seems we are headed for MexAmerica.

Re: [QUAD-L] A really cool poem I found in the draw

2005-06-09 Thread rollingbones

I remember before my accident i saw a guy going down the road in an electric wheelchair. I wondered about how he could cope with such a miserable existence. I always thought I would just wheel off the side of a cliff if that ever happened to me. I never thought about HOW I would get to the top of the cliff.
I never joined the military because i thought if there was a war, i would get crippled. It wasn't the thought of getting killed , it was the thought of being in a chair that scared me.
After i was paralyzed, i never felt like killing myself. Life is still good. Much tougher but still very much worth the effort.
It bugs me when i get that look from able bodies cuz i know that they are thinking like i used to. Some of my friends think i am the strongest person in the world because (they say) I'm doing something that they just couldn't handle. I tell them that they probably could they just don't realize it.
I'm sure most people on the list can real ate to what I'm saying.
I knew i guy that was paralyzed from the waist down in a car wreck and before he even got out of the hospital his sister shot herself because she thought she would have to take care of him for the rest of her lifeshe had a 11 year old girl.
He later drank and drugged himself to death.
...AND HE WAS A PARA ! I guess some people really can't handle it.
Well this story kinda sucks and i have more like them. I'm sure alot of you do.
I guess there's not really a point I'm trying to get to except...it's really not as bad as they think...and they actually can make eye contact with us without offending us or falling to the floor paralyzed."David K. Kelmer" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi All,
I just stumbled upon this poem that was written about me back in 1976, three years post by a friend who was only 15 at the time. AndI wanted to share it with you all.

   "A Poem for Bobbie"

A normal life i will never lead,
or to walk or run at an average speed.
I sit in my chair with the wheels on the end,
resting my legs which will never bend.
People wonder as they stop and stare,
how a life like this I could possibly bear.
But they are to blind to stop and see,
that living a life, no matter how it be,
is the greatest joy one can ever know,
And should not be thought be thought of as only pity and woe.
The normal people say, as I wonder with surprise,
that a life is not worth living if you cannot rise.
In a chair to which I am constantly bound,
they think love is something I've never found.
They pity me and i wonder why,
for it is for them that I sit and cry.
The "normal" people is what they are called.
But this is a term to which I am appalled.
They call theirs a life, and they tend to insist,
But a life I live, and they only exist.

I guess I really don't understand the whole salt thing. You need to
drink water to keep your body hydrated for your organs and your skin so you do
not get breakdown plus to keep your bladder flushed so if you are low on sodium
why can't you just add salt to your foods?

My doctor also told me that your body goes in cycles with your bowels and
bladder. He said that some days you might urinate a lot with light
colorurine and other days it's going to be less with darker color urine
and that you have to find a balance of how much fluid is you should be
drinking. I drink what I want and I prefer to drink more so I urinate
instead of less so I don't get UTIs.

[QUAD-L] Arm Pain

2005-06-09 Thread Greg

I've been waking up with terrible arm pain. In
Seattle I slept with 3 blankets, pulled over my ears. Now in AZ I sleep with a
very light blanket, and have it folded down with my arm uncovered Lately in the
mornings, my arms tingle like they are cold, but I'm not. And my arms are very
sore and my spasms are bad. But after I'm up for a few minutes, I feel much
better. I do take pain meds and I'm sure they are worn off by morning (12 hour
time release Oxy, but it never lasts that long while I'm up) But that can't be
it because I feel better after I get up. I wonder if it can be a symptom of my
body being over heated. Or maybe just laying in that position too long is
causing some kind of pain. But something is causing my arms to tingle, burn yet
feel cold, and ach bad. When I get over heated in the day my arms don't hurt.
And before if I laid in 1 position too long I would start to sweat.
Anyone else feel this in the mornings?
Greg

Well, it isn't like they are sending out coupons in Mexico to go to
Kentucky for free health care. Kentucky simply has hospital guidelines saying
they can't turn people away. Any person. I'm related toone. We are
all going to look Asian in a few generations anyway,if we don't destroy

atmosphere. I burn so easily I wear a sombrero and I like afternoon siestas. I
bet if you were Mexican you would want to live in Kentucky too. lol The only
solution to the problem of Mexicans in the US is for white Americans to have
lots and lots of babies. The reason that the crime rate among Hispanics is high
isbecause the poverty rate is high.Poor people get desperate and
commit stupid acts that they wouldn't if they weren't so poor.If anything
I feel badly because they are treated like a dirty little secret. Nobody should
be made to feel that way in America. I'm treated that way at times for being a
cripple. I don't like it. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

35hrs a week -- whata pipe dream!I don't know of a single qualifying person who receives this amount of HHA care paid for through Medicare - does anyone? Medicare reps told me it only paid for 3 visits a week -period - regardless of condition that's a whopping three hours (whoohoo). I didn't know about all this "agencies get to keep the money" policy NO REPS volunteered that tid-bit what little I've learned has been through what I could glean from their handbook and other fellow sufferers, err, clients.

My arms are the only bones that aren't described as arthritic. I'm a c-5
quad too. I had bursitis in my shoulder once. Felt like it was broken. I am told
that many upper body muscles aren't working really good and only give partial
support to your shoulders. Your bones and cartilage wear from repetitive
positions. It sucks, but hell, I'm deforming too. Maybe your doctor will give
you a cortisone shot. (god I love those). I sure hope you can find a way to
control it soon. It sux big time when you can't feel much, but what you do feel

Hi Jim,

Carbohydrate and electrolytes combination is used to treat or prevent dehydration (the loss of too much water from the body) that may occur with severe diarrhea, especially in babies and young children. Although thisdoes not immediately stop the diarrhea, it replaces the water and some important salts (electrolytes), such as sodium and potassium, that are lost from the body during diarrhea, and helps prevent more serious problems. Some carbohydrate and electrolytes solutions may also be used after surgery when food intake has been stopped.

Why is Mexico (and their people) exempt from doing the same? We had to learn...
they can too!

America can NOT continue to be a 'break' for everyone who thinks they observe it! God, I'll

Yes, Greg, I feel the sensation your describing but it's not
limited to a single body part. I AM in more pain mornings
but always have been.

Some days are better than others and vice versa. I too take the 12-hr-time-release
Oxy but it doesn't solve everything.

Moving to the heat of AZ has me feeling OVERALL 90% better than in
the cold, drab, clody, rainy, northeast for 20 of my quad years.

No answers but you're not alone. Julie (quad member here) I were just
talking about these "new" things that pop up now then but can't always
tie it 100% to any one thing.

I know mine is prolly from syringomyelia or just damaged nerves.

Subject: [QUAD-L] Arm Pain

I've been waking up with terrible arm pain. In Seattle I slept with 3 blankets, pulled over my ears. Now in AZ I sleep with a very light blanket, and have it folded down with my arm uncovered Lately in the mornings, my arms tingle like they are cold, but I'm not. And my arms are very sore and my spasms are bad. But after I'm up for a few minutes, I feel much better. I do take pain meds and I'm sure they are worn off by morning (12 hour time release Oxy, but it never lasts that long while I'm up) But that can't be it because I feel better after I get up. I wonder if it can be a symptom of my body being over heated. Or maybe just laying in that position too long is causing some kind of pain. But something is causing my arms to tingle, burn yet feel cold, and ach bad. When I get over heated in the day my arms don't hurt. And before if I laid in 1 position too long I would start to sweat.
Anyone else feel this in the mornings?

I guess I really don't understand the whole salt thing. You need to drink water to keep your body hydrated for your organs and your skin so you do not get breakdown plus to keep your bladder flushed so if you are low on sodium why can't you just add salt to your foods?

My doctor also told me that your body goes in cycles with your bowels and bladder. He said that some days you might urinate a lot with light colorurine and other days it's going to be less with darker color urine and that you have to find a balance of how much fluid is you should be drinking. I drink what I want and I prefer to drink more so I urinate instead of less so I don't get UTIs.

Re: [QUAD-L] Fw: Accessible Resort in WI - Summer Activities

2005-06-09 Thread Dana Miller
Spent a month in Green Lake Wisconsin back when I was 16. My mother
auditioned for a soloist voice position and got the job. It was a church
resort. All the music people stayed in a really neat stone house tucked
back into a clearing next to the woods. There was a stone fountain in the
living room which at that time was s neat! I worked in food service.
Had to make sure my number of tables had all the things they wanted, drinks,
condiments, hot toast or rolls depending on the meal, and clear the tables
and set up for the next meal.

It was beautiful!! I would leave for morning breakfast early so I could go
to the meadow and watch the deer, if I was lucky! The mosquitos were big
enough to carry you away, but other that that, it was so lush and green,
there was the lake and a pool, crafts for guests and workers--did some
ceramics, and could try some water sports. I tried water skiing and got up
the first time! That day the lake was very rough as so many boats were on
it, but managed a few good runs. The next time there was a lull in boat
traffic so it was smooth. The boat went faster which scared me, but the
real problem was the strength it took to just hang on to the rope! Whew! my
arms, hands and shoulders were not used to that, so had to let go. I went
down gently, but another gal in the house fell and a ski hit her thigh and
left a nasty bruise! It was a very good month!

See our web site for more information:

http://recycle.myelitis.org/http://recycle.myelitis.org/

Simply collect those empty inkjet and toner cartridges, box them up and
send them in using our free, pre-addressed Collection Boxes and Baggies.
The TMA will earn up to $18 (for toner cartridges) to be used toward
research for and education of neuroimmunologic diseases (which include:
Transverse myellitis, Neuromyelitis optica, Acute disseminated
encephalomyelitis, Optic neuritis and Multiple Sclerosis)

Nearly a million empties are thrown away in the United States every day,
so they shouldn't be hard to find.

You can register online to order free shipping supplies and shipping
labels, manage your account, see live receiving reports of checked in
cartridges and credits issued and view box order history plus download and
print a free customized shipping label instantly online.

Why recycle Inkjet Toner Cartridges?

Recycling keeps large amounts of plastics out of landfills. Every year
over

300 million cartridges are thrown away. This means for each cartridge,
about 2.5 pounds of plastic is thrown into a landfill. It will never go
away!

Recycling saves natural resources. To produce a single new laser
cartridge,

over 3 quarts of oil are used. In contrast, a recycled cartridge only
requires 1 quart of oil to be able to be reused. Recycling saves two
quarts
of oil per cartridge. This year alone, toner cartridge remanufacturing
will

save over eleven million (11,000,000) gallons of oil.

Thank you for your support!

Thanks. I don't know what is making my blood pressure go up when I lay
down, plus do not know when it goes up. It may be as soon as I am in bed,
it may go up gradually and be high by morning. I do not feel any different.
I seldom get dysreflexia and it only shows up as splotches on my neck. As
soon as I am turned on my back--am on my side doing BP or eating
breakfast--it goes away.

The thing that bothers me, is that my rehab doc ignores it, but it can't
be good for my heart in general. I am discovering my father and his side of
the family nearly all have had heart problems, especially the men. He has 9
siblings. On my mothers side its allergies and cataracts. I have already
had a bout with blood clots in my lungs and opted to stop taking -oh what is
that blood thinner?--after 2 years and the big clot in my leg was gone.
That was 7-8 years ago. I'll get concerned enough one of these days and
ask for a consult for a heart doc. Until then, I really can't do anything.
take care,

the symptoms of hay fever and other types of allergy. They work by
preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced

watery eyes. Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial
tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult.

Some of the antihistamines are also used to prevent motion sickness,
nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. In patients with Parkinson's disease,
diphenhydramine may be used to decrease stiffness and tremors. Also, the

[QUAD-L] true story one boy's recruitment experience

2005-06-09 Thread River Wolfe

if you want to validate this story go here:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/paynter/227497_paynter08.html

A single mom with a meager income, Marcia raised her kids on the farm
where, until recently, she grew salad greens for restaurants.

Axel's father, a Marine Corps vet who served in Vietnam, died when
Axel was 4.

Clearly the recruiters knew all that and more.

You don't want to be a burden to your mom, they told him. Be a
man. Make your father proud. Never mind that, because of his own
experience in the service, Marcia says enlistment for his son is the
last thing Axel's dad would have wanted.

The next weekend, when Marcia went to Seattle for the Folklife
Festival and Axel was home alone, two recruiters showed up at the door.

Axel repeated the family mantra, but he was feeling frazzled and worn
down by then. The sergeant was friendly but, at the same time,
aggressively insistent. This time, when Axel said, Not interested,
the sarge turned surly, snapping, You're making a big (bleeping)
mistake!

Next thing Axel knew, the same sergeant and another recruiter showed
up at the LaConner Brewing Co., the restaurant where Axel works. And
before Axel, an older cousin and other co-workers knew or understood
what was happening, Axel was whisked away in a car.

They said we were going somewhere but I didn't know we were going
all

the way to Seattle, Axel said.

Just a few tests. And so many free opportunities, the recruiters told
him.

He could pursue his love of chemistry. He could serve anywhere he
chose and leave any time he wanted on an apathy discharge if he
didn't like it. And he wouldn't have to go to Iraq if he didn't want
to.

At about 3:30 in the morning, Alex was awakened in the motel and fed
a

little something. Twelve hours later, without further sleep or food, he
had taken a battery of tests and signed a lot of papers he hadn't
gotten a chance to read. Just formalities, he was told. Sign here.
And here. Nothing to worry about.

By then Marcia had freaked out.

She went to the Burlington recruiting center where the door was open
but no one was home. So she grabbed all the cards and numbers she could
find, including the address of the Seattle-area testing center.

Then, with her grown daughter in tow, she high-tailed it south,
frantically phoning Axel whose cell phone had been confiscated so he
wouldn't be distracted during tests.

Axel's grandfather was in the hospital dying, she told the people at
the desk. He needed to come home right away. She would have said just
about anything.

But, even after being told her son would be brought right out, her
daughter spied him being taken down a separate hall and into another
room. So she dashed down the hall and grabbed him by the arm.

They were telling me I needed to 'be a man' and stand up to my
family, Axel said.

What he needed, it turned out, was a lawyer.

Five minutes and $250 after an attorney called the recruiters, Axel's
signed papers and his cell phone were in the mail.

overblowing things like the ABUSE (not TORTURE) which a few were
guilty of in Abu Grav, the story about our soldiers mistreating the
Koran that turned out to be a LIE run by News Week, which caused riots
resulting in deaths. When the truth came out that detainies had been
flushing its pages down the toilet, not a word was heard out of the
Middle East.
People like Ted Kennedy should sit down and shut up instead of trying
to use this for political gain. All they do is add more fuel to the
fire which Al Gazeera can't wait to use.

[QUAD-L] re: overload of Mexicans

2005-06-09 Thread reelquick
I dont think being poor is any excuse for Mexicans coming to the US illegally. If they want to come here why cant they do it the correct way.
As for Asia and the Chinese they have a large country, perhaps we could round up all the Mexicans that are here illegally and give them a choice of going back to where they come from or going to China.
What really ticks me off about all this is my youngest son married a Chinese girl last year in China. They are trying to do things the LEGAL way and get her over here the proper way but seems there is a 40,000 people back log waiting to come to the US. It is people from all over the world wanting to come the legal way. Why cant the Mexicans wait and come legally.
Do you know if you emply one and they have an expired work permit you can get a huge fine.
I did employ one several years ago and she worked fine for a while, then she started wanting more money and for me to pay her insurance so she could have a baby. I didn't have the money to pay her $15.00 an hr plus several hundred dollars for a woman of child producing years to have insurance. She just up and quit on me the day she told me this leaving us without a caregiver. She ended up working someplace else and having a baby thru the board of health and you know what hospital she had it at...University where I work. These people DO PLAN on staying in this country no matter what. What are they going to do send the parents back and keep the babies here? I think the citizenship laws need to be changed to correct the problem.
