Re: [QUAD-L] to all in wheelchairs

2007-10-28 Thread John S.
Well, Silas mine has a flaw in the electronics that causes dead spots in the
recline system. You can get around this by simply turning off the power and
restarting. It is capable of more speed than I'm able to control. If you don't
fly, don't let them give you gell cel batteries.
On the bright side, its very freaking comfortable. Armor your feet if you got
those tiny heel plates. Bolt a peice of metal the size of your foot to that
little heel plate. You'll thank me when you hit something. It is so
maneuverable its easy to think you'll get through places.
Best chair I ever had. Spent 30 hours in it during power outage. It rocked!
Never caused a sore or irritated a bad spot.
I think you'll be happy with it.

I’m expecting a new TDX3 any day now, I swear medicade approved the chair the
first time. I started the process in July so its took about 4 months, it would
have been sooner but my Drs. Secretary didn’t fax the paper work. We just so
happened to call and check on the progress and Holland medical hadn’t received
the needed paper work, so that slowed the order about 4 weeks. What’s wrong
with these medical equipment companies, you would think they would have called
to see what was going on. Hell they don’t give a flip about you, my old
Invacare was down so if I hadn’t had my extreme I would be stuck in bed. I
hope I like the TDX anybody have any complaints with theirs? Silas

You will learn in time that obtaining a new chair these days is a lot more
difficult today than it was just 5 years ago. Especially if CMS is paying for
that chair. First, is the order from a licensed doctor in rehab medicine, to
see an Occupational Therapist for a complete evaluation based on medical needs.
 The
evaluation goes back to the doctor for another order to the DME. The DME will
then determine what is best for you, with your help and assistance and submit
those findings to Gov Insurance to determine if they will be paid for the
perfect chair. Sometimes they get a yes and other times they get a no.
Submittals have to be adjusted and justifications have to be properly coded and
submitted.

The process could take 6 months to a year. Maybe longer. Sometimes shorter.
Ask around and evaluate each answer, based on its user and needs.

Best Wishes

old with my butt in it almost everyday between 8 to 14 hours. A few signs of
wear are becoming evident. I figure I'll get my new back replacement and
batteries then get them started on a replacement. Unless Ohio has dictated the
chairs shall last 7 years!

My neighbor did put some cool leg armor on my chair so I can visit offices
where they don't allow wheelchairs. (Like Medicaid)

Re: [QUAD-L] Best ER in Phoenix?

2007-10-28 Thread Lori Michaelson
Medicine and people in the medical field have changed so much since the
1970s. I think it was just recently that I wrote how little people care
anymore and when you find the ones that do... they are few and far between.

A hospital may be great for one thing (even for us quadriplegics) but
terrible for another thing. There are too many things to consider. The staff
ON DUTY THEN, the ER doctors, and the hospital itself to mention a few. And
the workers are always changing. A hospital may have a great reputation but
may fail greatly for the needs that we have.

For example... I was scared to death to have my huge bladder stones removed
a year and a half ago. If it were not for the anesthesiologist making the
right call for me... things could have turned out very badly. I love my
doctor and trusted my Dr. so there was no problem there. It turned out that
the whole experience was beyond fantastic! The nurses in the emergency room
for the procedure were crowding around me like mother hens making sure I was
comfortable *constantly.*

I'd better mention here that there was a snafu between the doctor's office
and the hospital before the procedure even took place and when I went to
have my preop work done... the administrator, the head nurse at the
hospital, etc. etc. showed up just for that! I think I had made the
impression that if they were not going to listen to me about how my body
reacts they were going to be in big trouble.

Now, when I had to go to that SAME hospital emergency room this past August
when the home health agency nurse could not get my catheter in... it was a
nightmare! They just left me in a room totally unattended. The emergency
room doctor began lecturing me about all the normal bladder works, etc. when
he did not have a clue about autonomic dysreflexia, etc. even though me and
my husband tried to tell him the severity of it.

I guess you were only asking about the best emergency room but it still
stands that the staff and the doctors are changing all the time and medical
personnel are not like they were years ago to our dismay.

I cannot believe that they did not tell you about your other problem! You
have the right to know! If I were you I would go to the administrator of the
hospital and talk about their Bill of Rights and much more!

Too many people brush things like that often asked what exacerbates poor
medical care. After all... whether they take care of you or were you in some
way... they still get paid!

I thank you much. I thought ST Joseph was the major SCI hospital in the
area. I'll have to read up and call Good Samaritan.

I went to my local ER and they admitted me for 3 days for a UTI. After I got
out, I went to my family doc for another matter. He says to me "I see you
just got out of the hospital and had some fluid in your lungs and
"Pericardial Effusion". (a little fluid around the heart). They never told
me any of that. And I still have fevers and chills. My doc got me on
antibiotics and I go in to see a urologist. I'm not real happy with my
local hospital.

Re: [QUAD-L] BOWEL PROGRAM QUESTION

2007-10-28 Thread John S.
Paul,
Off hand, I'd say increase your fibre intake. Citricel pills or whatevers
cheapest. Never under estimate a shot or two of prune juice a 8 or so hours
ahead of time. The Mirilax others are mentioning is cool.
It is actually polyethylene glycol. It is hydro-dynamic so it absorbs water and
carries it all the way to your bowel. This creates the proverbial, "smooth
move".
With some added fibre and mirilax you may not need 2 magic bullets.
Ohyea. If your taking anti biotics or narcotics, please take some acidophylus
and/or other probiotics

best of luck and wishes.

Hello folks,

Hoping some of you can help, regarding my BP. I'm a complete c5/6
43-year old healthily quad injured 4 years ago. Over the last year, my
BP has become less than routine.

I used to use 1 or 2 Magic Bullet suppositories over the camode and in
an hour.all done.

Now.I usually get next to nothing in an hour, with digital stimulation.
Then I take a shower..still no results. Then back to bed where I do
range of motion and another suppository or two. That works...but it
takes another hour or so.

Any ideas how to do this in the first hour over the commode.

Thanks so much for your help!

Allot of these new fangled chairs have seperate controls for the anti shear
back as well as the legs raising and lowering. By raising your legs befor you
recline and tilt, this feature can use your own legs to push you cack in your
seat.
It also means your not seated in your chair quite right. but its a work around
fix untill the doctors and pt decide to re-seat your chair.

Maybe its in the hippa rules not do anything to save Med/Med patients.
So, here is a new trick to try if you have an SP catheter. Attach
a small leg bag to your catheter and leave it there. Do Not
disconect it. When transferring bed bags and other leg bags,
simply attach them to the drain side of the permanent leg bag.
Goal: Adding an extra barrier to germs and chemicals and reducing
infections.

My big question is, why do you flush your bladders? Don't you

change your catheter once a month?
Even when folks say they use sterile techniques with replacement
of catheters, there are new bacteria introduced. If you are as
incredibly sterile about your technique, the best you can achieve
is to be clean.

The key to not getting infections with an indwelling is to drink lots of

then reattaches it to the SP catheter. Everyone in the home has awful and
persistant infections while taking assorted anti biotics daily. I personally
called the doctors of record about 2 patients that were showing signs of fatal
reactions to macrodantin. (I'm amazed nurses are so afraid of doctors that they
won't do such things.)

Maybe its in the hippa rules not do anything to save Med/Med patients.

So, here is a new trick to try if you have an SP catheter. Attach a small leg
bag to your catheter and leave it there. Do Not disconect it. When transferring
bed bags and other leg bags, simply attach them to the drain side of the
permanent leg bag.

Goal: Adding an extra barrier to germs and chemicals and reducing infections.

?

My big question is, why do you flush your bladders? Don't you change your
catheter once a month?

Even when folks say they use sterile techniques with replacement of catheters,
there are new bacteria introduced. If you are as incredibly sterile about your
technique, the best you can achieve is to be clean.

?

good luck and best wishes,

john

Hi Eric,

?

How do you open your tube?? Do you also flush the leg/bedside bags with a
vinegar mix, too?? I flush out my tubing and bags with a 10/1 bleach/water mix,
and then throughly dry and reusable bag parts.

I hate to contradict you, Wheel, but any licensed physician can write the
prescription if the OT or PT writes the letter of evaluation and medical
necessity well enough. I got my letter from an OT in Feb. '07, my prescription
from my doctor's PA in Mar. '07 and my chair was delivered April 13, '07. IMO
the DME provider makes all the difference by double-checking everything; making
sure every "i" is dotted, every "t" is crossed and everything is coded
properly. I chose the Quantum 600 and it's been great. I liked the center
wheel drive because both my legs are anputated above-the-knee making my
weight/balance cause a rear-wheel drive tip easily. It also had the best
options for me: Roho high-profile Quatro cushion, tilt, recline, etc.

My neighbor did put some cool leg armor on my chair so I can visit offices

Subject: [QUAD-L] BOWEL PROGRAM QUESTION

Hello folks,

?

Hoping some of you can help, regarding my BP.? I'm a complete c5/6

43-year old healthily quad injured 4 years ago.? Over the last year, my

BP has become less than routine.

?

I used to use 1 or 2 Magic Bullet suppositories over the camode and in

an hour.all done.

?

Now.I usually get next to nothing in an hour, with digital stimulation.?

Then I take a shower..still no results.? Then back to bed where I do

range of motion and another suppository or two.? That works...but it

takes another hour or so.

?

Any ideas how to do this in the first hour over the commode.

?

Thanks so much for your help!

I 'm sure that you will enjoy your new chair once you receive it. This
industry as a whole is downsizing because the Gov Paid Equpment, is a fraction
of
what it was in previous years. Some employees have moved on to other jobs
and those who remained are often working for two, to keep the industry moving.
Granted, CMS is saving lots of money, but the true disabled population is
not getting what they once did.
