Hi EV1,

I know this is a very delicate subject, (except here) but has anyone found a
less traumatic way to stimulate the anus than the finger?

I am hurting like heck down there, since my opiates joined the dietary party,
slowing everything to a snail crapping pace. Been through the gamut: Magic
Bullets, Enemeez, etc., but nothing comes down to the lower bowel. Outside of
chewing on a tree trunk, my diet gets enough fiber IMHO.

Looking for help, my anus is making my nurses wince when they inspect down
there.

I tried out a mid-wheel drive, when I was ordering my new chair. I didn't
feel I had as much control when I was going a block and a half away to my mom's
house, which is part sidewalk and part street. I decided not to change from
rear
wheel drive to rear wheel. I got another Permobile 300 although I wanted a 500.
It's so hard to know which chair to choose. I really don't like this one much
better than my older one. They seem cheaply made.

Nan,
How comfortable of a ride is the mid-wheel compared to center-wheel?
I'm talking about sidewalk cracks, they bother my back now and I have
rear-wheel drive and am considering mid-wheel. I'm also going to get air in
tires so it will be more comfortable. Do you have air in your tires.  Bobbie

If you stay in your home and only go on sidewalks, paved surfaces, stores,

I've
started the process for a new power chair and I originally wanted
front
wheel drive like my current chair(an omegatrac), but am
  being
encouraged to try mid-wheel chairs.  Specifically Quickie's
  qm-710 and
Permobil's m300.  I'm concerned that they won't be able
  to get over
curbs and thresholds due to the front casters.  Also I
  use an ez lock
and I'm sure that'll rob the chair of clearance.
  I'm trying to get
away from the size and weight of the omegatrac, but
  want to keep as
much curb hopping/rough terrain capability as I
  can.

Anybody had any experience with either chair? Or a lot of
  experience
with front wheel-drive vs. mid-wheel
  drive?

Thanks,

As for medication, I am presently taking 80 mg of baclofen, 5 mg of Valium and
75 mg of Datrolene (spelling) per day just for spasticity. Sometimes taking
different types of medications does seem to work more effectively than just
baclofen. I was never able to control my spasms well with just baclofen.

This is definitely in my bailiwick Diana. I have had pretty bad spasms for all
of 17 years I have been in the wheelchair and there was a time period where I
was maxed out on baclofen and taking a substantial amount of Valium. I still
had pretty bad spasms and what really helped me was when my caregivers did
extensive range of motion with special emphasis on stretching my Achilles
tendons.

I was recently unable to do range of motion in hospital and my spasms were
awful when I returned home. It took my caregivers about a week to get my body
back in order, but occasionally I still slide backward into difficult balance
with spasms. During that time. We just spend more time stretching them.

As for medication, I am presently taking 80 mg of baclofen, 5 mg of Valium and
75 mg of Datrolene (spelling) per day just for spasticity. Sometimes taking

Take care and don't hesitate to write,

You are crazy KK, but that is another issue (smiling)

In the world of law, that action would be considered, assault. If the
person touched you again after any sign of disapproval, those actions
would be considered, assault and battery. This alone would lead to
police intervention, a report, an arrest and money bond. The case
would have to be heard by the court and a judgement. These actions
would also lead to additional hearings, by the person's employment.
These types of actions should not be tolerated by anyone, verbal or
none verbal.

I'm having problems with my potentiometer, it turns on
even when I'm not tilting or reclining. So I went to CMC, the company I got my

, last Thursday I went to Kessler to their wheelchair clinic to get fitted for

Eahn, a rep from CMC.
Yesterday Pete and I dropped in on CMC (their only 5 miles away and don't

working on my chair when a voice called him away. CMC is run by a husband and
wife team. Patti, the wife, came storming out from the back without the repair
man and began YELLING at me and Pete about how they are not going to fix my
chair because she heard I was ordering a chair from another supplier. I told
her I hadn't quite decided which supplier I was going to use and was going
through the possess to gather information. And I reminded her that I HAD a
sales rep from CMC, her company, at my home 3 months before and I had questions
but the sales rep never got back to to date. Patti asked why I was considering
using another supplier Pete (my husband) said communication I told her that
an employe, Dana, NEVER returns my calls or follows through on a RX or repair
request. Patti said OH, we got rid of her because we have been getting a lot
of complaints about her.
Patti went in the back (we heard F this and F that) when she returned she
said she had just gotten off the phone with Kessler and yes it was true that I
was on a fact finding mission and that she was now SO VERY SORRY. Yes, of
course we will fix the potentiometer, will'll even do it for free if you order
your chair from us. THEN Patti disappeared again in the back room and
reappeared with Dana the employee that she JUST said they had let go we just
moved her to another desk she now says, you will never deal with her again, and
then Dana apologized. Now Patti is begging and pleading with us not to go to
another supplier when Carlos, her husband, appears YELLING at Pete and me about
how we should have written a letter to them explaining the communication
problem.
Why are the husband and wife, Patti Carlos, yelling at us of hey was us to
stay with them?
We leave not promising anything We need to think about all of this. me and
Pete say … which is very true. As soon as we went directly home, which took 10
minutes, the phone rang and it was the sales rep apologizing, never asking why
I was trying to get a hold of him for 3 months.
The next day I decided to find put how much this part will cost
out-of-pocket instead of waiting 10 to 14 days, $325 is all. So I want to pay
and get reimbursed because I have an appointment at wheelchair clinic again
September 13th and I'm most likely NOT going to use CMC with whom I've gotten
my last chair from.
BUT the supplier I'm going to go with Wilpage, I've NEVER delt with before.
But a quad up-stairs, SCI, has used them for years and years and she LOVES
them. Wilpage comes to her place to do repairs and is very good at returning
phone calls … communication.
One more thing. I still am not sure who will repair the chair I'm sitting in
now until I get my new chair, which can take 6 to 7 months after ordering.
  What do I do?

Hi Toby
I didn’t take it as complaining but more as a statement of fact and wishing
for more.  We have been talking about our limitations and frustrations for
many years for some of us on this list.
I only have shoulder shrugs as a C4 complete, but do know of other C4
completes that have more.  So we use what we can and learn to make do and
have shared many unusual fixes and adaptions over the years which have helped
each other.  This is one place we can whine and know that somebody out there
has been in the same spot and can have some empathy for what we have and what
we have lost.
I have always wished for one arm and a somewhat working hand, and to heck
with ever walking again because I never need to look for a chair to sit in.
JEach of us wants different things, and each of us mourns about different
things but we’re all united by our handicaps in some way.  Thank goodness for
each of our uniqueness.
Good to see you on the list.

Hi Amy,

I have never heard of this. Is this something new on the
market? I noticed when reading about that it is not to be taken if you think
you
have a bowel blockage. I guess you wouldn't know unless you had an x-ray
because
sometimes it's hard to tell, as I have had several. I usually use the MiraLax
and I also use the prune juice and milk of magnesium if I fear a blockage.
While
I was at KU and May I learned about an old remedy using a half a cup of
molasses
+ I have a cup of milk and warming in the microwave for 30 seconds and using as
a enema. It seems to really work if you appear to be having a bowel blockage.
It
is called the last resort.

I just read about gastropresis and I had never
heard of this. I'm glad they have a treatment for this. I just got out of the
hospital with a UTI. They seem to always wanted treatment they IV. They will
starting me on Mandelamine to prevent UTIs.

Does anyone else on the list
take this medication and how does it work for them.

I do the same as Mandy, in my bed as well as in my chair. If your chair tilts,
it's easy to find the right angle, you can play with the tilt and see how far
back you can go where you're still able to crunch forward, you can do the same
with a hospital bed, I just do as many as I can, I don't always count them.
Always try to think about sucking in your belly while doing them, even if you
can't it helps just to think about it. I also do some a bit sideways, but don't
do it if you have no trunk control at all unless someone is there to spot you.
These have gotten a lot easier for me with time. I've also been working out my
arms by tilting my chair back and crunching myself up but using my arms, I just
hold on to the arm rests and do like bicep curls, my arms are getting pretty
toned now. I recommend that too!

Try it!

I do- if you have a bed that raises and lowers the head you can sit at an
incline and try to pull yourself up and lower slowly. My PT told me to find an
incline that works where you can do 12-15 and do 2 or 3 sets every 3 days to
strt. If it doesn't cause any negative symptoms to flare up you can either do
more reps, decrease the incline, or do more days per week.
I like to do these with help to keep me in line and focused. It takes a lot of
concentration to hit the correct muscles rather than cheating with my
arms/shoulders and possibly straining something without knowing it.

You mentioned your bowels. Well, the method used to do your bowel treatment
can leave quite a bit of stool in the bowels, because it doesn't irritate
the bowels like the magic bullet. What you describe is pretty much what
happened to me a couple of weeks ago. They couldn't figure out what was
wrong. They thought I had an infection, but that didn't pan out.

When I went home later that night, I did my normal bowel care. I knew I
felt bloated and I mentioned that to the doctor, but they didn't seem to
think it was a problem. Well, my bowels were definitely fall. In fact, I
had started to have some stool come out of my rectum, which hasn't happened
to me in more than 10 years. Once my bowel care was completed, I felt like
eating, I was no longer nauseated and I had energy.

I'm not suggesting you change your bowel care method, but I would think
about using more stool softener in order to try to expel as much fecal
matter as possible during your normal bowel care.

Just FYI.
Quadius
PS I sometimes don't have energy and it is that I'm feeling down. I have,
however, had pretty good results with drinking quite a bit of green tea. I
usually make it like Ice-T, without sugar and it seems to give me the extra
incentive to do more than I would without it.
That's what works for me.

Do any of you guys struggle with being tired/weak all the time? Over
the last few years it's gotten pretty bad where sometimes I can barely
move(what movement I actually have). I think it's in large part due
to diet. I don't get hungry very often so I usually end up
forgetting/skipping lunch. I've been thinking about trying meal
replacement bars(easier than shakes and don't have to be very hungry
to get one down) and was wondering if you guys might have some
  suggestions?

Also another possible cause I thought of was slow bowels. I do a
bowel program every other night using enemeez and take miralax as
needed, but every time I get a KUB(get kidney stones regularly) they
point out that my bowels are full even if a did a bowel program the
night before. The only time I feel like I'm starving is after a
  massive blowout(definitely not worth it).

Dehydration could also be a cause, because some morning and early
afternoons my kidneys are in overdrive.

This lack of energy definitely hinders me and I'm open to suggestions.

  Thanks,

Intermittent catherization is not only for people who can do it themselves.
I am a complete C4 and I used intermittent catherization for 17 years. I
was lucky enough to be able to go 6-8 hours at night, but I was able to call
someone in the house if I did have a problem. According to the urologist it
made a world of difference in my bladder and kidney functions. After 17
years my bladder was still within the normal shape, size, and functionality
of other women of my age. I still do not use a balloon catheter, and we
make sure that I have a break of a couple of hours every morning and up to 3
hours every evening with the catheter clamped off to allow my bladder to
function somewhat normally. I began using a night bag during the night when
it was not possible to have somebody available in my home. I usually have
it in for 9 plus hours. During the day I also use a leg bag just to have
the freedom to be active without worrying about finding a place to cath. It
has worked for me and I have had very few UTIs over the years and my
urologist feels that it is partly due to intermittent catherization and not
having a indwelling catheter for all these years. Whatever works for you is
what you should do as we are each so very different. Joan

thats why I said tape them in place. Consider it a long intermittent cath.
If you can't cath yourself, your Dr. is a dingaling. Ask them to show you
how you can do it? Intermittent cath is for people who can do it.

If you really want to continue it, take enough ditropan to paralyze your
bladder. It is all I can think of LQ.

Hiya Little Quad,  What is the difference between an agreement and a
contract?  Just how binding would your understanding be if they were
actually challenged?  The Home Healthcare Industry is one of the fastest
growing industries in our country as they seek employees to perform some or
most
of those duties you listed.  And yet, even with those understandings,
agreements and contracts, they continue to find themselves before the
government
by unhappy employees who feel their employers, went too far.  I've seen
several employee contracts that are 5-10 pages listing what is expected of
those
who work for various Health Care Agencies.  When issues becomes intolerable
for either party... everyone begins to read between the lines.  Private
party caregivers can be more involved then agency, and how does one know when
they have crossed the line?  Will both parties agree to binding arbitration
should there be issues?  Often, what begins as a molehill, can develop into
mountains.  Hence, what I consider to be normal and reasonable here, might
be totally unacceptable in California.  Just how enforceable would your
written understanding be?  How many documented strikes would be
required before dismissal?
Its tough to be an employer these days as the deck of cards are stacked
against YOU.  If your private work rules are tougher then the industry...
you are going to have a difficult finding employees.  If your work rules
are too lax... then you will find ample aids, waiting to take advantage of your
lack of knowledge.  Its not easy and I wish you a load of Luck and Good
Fortune!
Best Wishes

It's your care. As Eric said, you have the right to ask for everything
and anything you want/need. Whether you can find someone who agrees to
those terms at the pay being offered is another story. If you're
paying $100/hr you could get people to do anything, but if you're
offering minimum wage it's another story.
Most of your requests seemed reasonable except a few:
-not sure why they'd need I.D. at ALL times. Maybe the first time you
meet them or so, but after that requiring them to carry I.D. seems
heavy-handed. Most likely they'll have I.D. with them anyhow.
-not allowing them personal cell use seems a bit harsh, especially if
they have children. You may be better saying limited personal cell
use and give them a warning if they start to abuse the policy.
-always wearing scrubs? Is there a need for this? Just asking.
Remember, even though they're your employee they are still human
beings. Set firm policies at first, but if you come across as overly
controlling you may miss out on some good caregivers. Sometimes a bit
of compromise goes a long way, as long as it's not taken advantage of.
I wish you success in your search.

Well other jobs don't allow it. plus my current aide is driving me nuts with
the phone, she's texting or walking out on me to talk without saying do u need
anything before i go. while sitting in doctor office the other day he phone
rane and she talked loudly for 10 minutes before doctor came in. and if she's
on the phone in house and my phone rings she keeps yapping away... as far as
scrubs, she isn't required...that was just precautionary for new hire, don't
want short shorts tight shirts...
well mine thinks she gets to sit in a chair in my room and watch tv...she
doesn't like cleaning the rest of the house bcuz i'm not in their everyday,
plus she thinks that my mom should do it. my mom works 40+ hours a week and
gets up with me a night, as does my bf
I know if i say anything she'll complain about it...so i'm making a list to
have my caseworkers approve it and let them bring it to next meeting... this
week.

You could possibly have developed cellulitis in your foot/leg. It causes
redness and swelling and is treated with antibiotics. Good luck.

Hi LittleQuad,

A couple of things--I'm a T10 para, 27 years post--I've had two blood clots
over the years, both in a vein in my
right thigh. The first one slowly went away over a period of 4 months. The
2nd one never went away--it isn't
a complete blockage but it never dissipated. My hematologist told me that
usually, with coumadin (warfarin)
a blood clot will dissipate within 3-6 months, but sometimes they don't at all.
He also said it is important to
be followed regularly in the acute stage and any additional swelling or redness
should be seen right away.

A BIG WORD OF CAUTION--Cipro increases the action of coumadin/warfarin meaning
that taking the two together
could make your blood too thin which can be very dangerous. I'm on a permanent
low dose of warfarin and when
I need to take Cipro for a UTI I have been instructed to lower the dose of
coumadin/warfarin and go in for weekly
blood draws to make sure my blood doesn't get too thin.

Larry's suggestion was right on as well, you could have developed cellulitis.
If the swelling gets worse, or if the redness
starts to spread or streak (especially if the redness starts to spread or
streak over a period of hours and or if you develop
a fever) you should be seen in urgent care or the ER. I've also had
cellulitis--anytime I have redness I take a magic marker
and draw an area around the redness--usually it is on my toes or foot. If the
redness spreads out or streaks I head to the ER.

Hope this isn't the case.

Bob

I feel the same way about any high ranking religous person. I wouldn't vote for
Pat Robertson, or a catholic bishop. He just happens to be a mormon. He was
born wealthy and his father set him up so no matter what he did he'd grow
richer by the day. This guy has no concept of what it is to be poor or
handicapped in America. I wouldn't have voted for obama if i thought he was a
member of a black power movement.
From what I've read, Romney doesn't understand his own religion yet he makes
no appologies for any mistakes he has ever made. He backed the governor of
Ohio in blaming teachers, cops and civil servants for bankrupting the state.
How stupid does that sound. He compares it to reagan busting air traffic
contollers. None of these ppl have walked off, they just want union
representation and keeping the state from stealing their retirement funds.
The inability to appologize is so rock solid in the republican party that they
have changed their name to THE NEW MAJORITY PARTY. Now they had nothing to do
with spending 10.5 trillion dollars under bush and 4.5 trillion under Obama.
Most Americans believe the president controls spending. The fact is that the
congress says so on every last penny.
No, I'm not prejudice against Mormons. But I do hate Liars.

Hi All,
In this episode one of the para's that had a blood clot in her spine when
she was 15 was having her Mother visit her after not seeing her for over 2
years. Their bond was not very good and the very first thing the Mother said to
her after her disabled daughter opened the door was ..… your still in the
wheelchair? Also, to the camera the Mother stated that .… I wish she had died
when she got sick. This brought to mind how the girl up-stairs, Dawn, is with
her own Mother. Dawn's Mother constantly told her that … you've ruined
everything. and wouldn't ever let her sit at the kitchen table or any dining
table because … it looks awful Now, after 29+ years they are close. But the
Mother has only been to her apartment maybe 3 or 4 times since 1995 and she
lives about 20 miles away.
Also, I was reading on the internet that the one girl who is a C-4,5 quad
had stem cell surgery within 24 hours of her car accident giving her, what
looks like C-5,6 quad results.

No Q's like age, previous conditions, etc. those of us like me wont be affected

I'm not a Mormon, but I too found that offensive.
Politics is one thing, but can we leave race, gender, ethnicity and religion
out of it?
Oh, and disability?
Had people known FDR was in a wheelchair much of the time I could imagine them
making a similar statement about him [substitute cripple as the bigot point.]

every year since I became a quad I've been answering dumbas* Q's. Obamacare
doesn't even begin untll 2014. i'd rather pay a few dollars to cover my
paperwork each year than consider medicare broke by 2020. The romney sh*t is
going to tax ppl with insurance, forcing more to loose insurance and become a
greater healthcare burden. Under Obama everyone with a job purchases insurance.
No Q's like age, previous conditions, etc. those of us like me wont be affected
at all. I was wiped out with my accident 36 years ago. I live on whats under
the table, like 1/4 of the economy. The rich own the insurance companies and
hate obama. Its ggood enough for me.
Think of it like this, a billionaire mormon bishop running the most powerfull
country on earth. lol, i cant vote for that.

Pray that Obamacare is overturned.  I'm already seeing new requirements
when I go into the doctor office that scare me.

Have you ever had your doctor ask, why are you on medicare?

individuals who don't get coverage. Private insurance premiums will most
certainly be raised for those that have it. How can expanding coverage to over
30 million new people possibly lower costs?

27 billion of new taxes on drug companies, 20 billion on medical device makers.
Those costs will just pass through to us in my opinion.

Total of 18 new taxes estimating 503 billion in revenue.  New taxes may bring
revenue but they will also (also my opinion) slow economic growth which we
desperately need right now.

I listened to the oral arguments on the Supreme Court website and it seemed the

It's enough to make even a quad kick ass and throw fists. But I am not

Today was my 44th Quanniversary, 15 days ago was my 60th birthday.  I WAS
going to celebrate, go out, have a nice dinner, etc. but that all changed when
I woke up to find my whole apartment flooded.  The water heater blew up.  I
have to stay in another apartment for a week+.  Half my stuff here, half there
(my OCD is kicking in big time) They have to replace all of my carpeting,
possibly some drywall, paint, etc., etc., etc.  This other apartment reeks of
smoke - it's disgusting!!!  Yuck. Now I get to go through all of my boxes to
see what's been damaged.  So far I've found one photograph by a favorite artist
and several old (1882 - 1902) books that have extensive water damage.  Very
sad.  So I have my work cut out for me this week.

But, I made it through another year.  So I guess it's not all bad news!  YAY
ME! :)

[QUAD-L] DVT in calf

2012-06-08 Thread ~LittleQuad~
Hey gang! My right calf and foot have been swollen and numb feeling (I have
great sensation in whole body). So Tuesday I was able to see my rehab doc, he
thought the symptoms showed a DVT. I couldnt think of why I would have one. So
the Wednesday I went to get ultrasound. Yep, the front left vein has a clot.
They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until the doctors had a plan. So I'm on
5mg Coumadin a day and a shot of Enoxaparin Sodium every 12 hours.

Yesterday when I was getting up I looked down at my right chin, i remembered a
scab that I've had a while and it dawned on me...on May 7th I went to the
dentist and while under nitrous and my hand control turned to the side, I
decided to reaarange my chair. In doing so I rammed my leg into a table. Thank
goodness I had on jeans and a blanket because it scraped my leg to chin bone.
It never dawned on me i could have given myself a DVT. Yet when I look at the
now scar and where my sensation starts changing it's the same area.

Now I've got to watch out more closely!! Anyone else ever have one? How long
was treatment?

I had one and am now on a low dose of a blood thinner for preventative care.
When my accident originally happened I had a greenfield filter put in so if any
clots broke free they wouldn't make it to my lungs/heart or up, the filter is
good for 3 to 5 years and then you need it replaced

crowded sidewalks and streets inside the Theme Parks.  And the one Quad, who
was stuck in a boat ride on water that was broke down.  He wanted to be the

Disney Properties continues to be the number 1 place for children with

Hi Amy,

What a great idea. Amy. Way to go.
The guy who lost his leg up to his hips was at Craig for further pressure
problems. He was a paraplegic and could do his own weight shifts.. It's hard to
believe what some people can't understand their own bodies. I wonder if she
went to rehab. It is amazing how quickly sores can go from stage I to stage 3.
I also take pictures with my digital camera so I can see the wound maybe she
can not understand because she cannot see the wound.. The nurse for the wound
care. Dr. gave me a list of foods I need to promote healing, and also they told
me to take L Argentine. It is a generic.I know that spelling is wrong. You can
get it through your pharmacy. They did not have in stock, so they ordered for
me. It's much cheaper than the drink I have taken in the past. I'm also
drinking a high protein drink by Insure. It only has 2 1/2 g of fat and 9 g of
protein. Thethe regular Insurer have 9 g of fat. My rehab doctor also said to
take a high dosage of zinc, I take 225
mg twice a day by prescription.

Dana,

it would be great if there was Utube, about what happens when sores are
neglected. It would be so useful for cases such as hers. I use a high profile
QuadraRoho cushion. I have used Roho since 1978 with great results, other than
a few times it became deflated and I did not know.
I I think they are wonderful, I did not like the J cushion. They allowed me to
return.

Hi Bobbie,

I am so thankful that you are trying to help her. Don't give up. She may one
day listen to you before her source serious bone infection or loss of limbs.
When I was incorrect hospital, I met a guy who had both of his legs removed
because of bed sores. He had to get around on a cart and I believe he was a
paraplegic. I don't think he took very good care of himself. His legs were cut
above the top of the leg.
The minute I see a red spot. I go to my wound care and begin treatment. They
are really good about healing them. One guy showed me his wound vacuum as I
have never got to see one before. I think the wound has to be a stage III to
get Medicare dressing.

I for one agree with you Diannal!    Environment, Chemicals and Virus.  For
those taking meds, this is the reason your doctor wants an ultra sound every
3-5 years... to check your liver.  A liver that has up to 75% will still
function in making bile and possible for it to repair itself. Chronic liver
failure often means the liver is subjected to conditions beyond the 75%.

You are most correct Floreen.  Quads should just be quiet and say nothing.
Quads are not capable of making political decisions and discuss the subject.
They should be more concerned with their feeding tubes, diapers and caths.
Speaking politics might expose them to fodder as well. I wish both you and
Jason the very best and hope you can protect Jason from further political and
self improvement discussions from other boards as well.  Maybe its just me, but
I haven't seen a political discussion on this board since before December 2008,
but you may have read different.

Please also be aware that if people like Justin Dart, Ed Roberts, Judith
Humann, Steve Gold, and Christopher Reeve has not participated in such lively
political discussions, that your Jason might not have some of those Human
Rights, that he shares today.  After all those rights did not fall from the

Bless you darlin and Bless your Jason.
Politics is involved in every breath you and I take.  Most the most of it and

Hiya Amye!

Missed your postings while you were absent.  Glad to read you back and hope the
family is doing well.
10 years old now??  How time flys or flies

Regarding your blood pressure... I wish that I had the answer, but I don't.
Besides the binder and morning exercise before getting out of bed in the
morning, I am stump'd.  Perhaps the guys at the Miami Project and Dr Green or
Young may be in a better position to advise you on the research, regarding the
blood pressure syndrome of those with spinal cord injuries.

I'm hoping for you.

I also suffer from this malady and have so for the majority of the 13 years
I have spent in this chair.
The first three years of my chairbound existence was largely spent lying back
in my wheelchair.
My problem is especially acute when I stay down for an entire day and then
get up and try to eat a heavy meal. It usually takes me an hour and a half to
get my blood pressure up to a level where I can go into my office to work. I
also find it extremely difficult to eat within an hour or so of getting up and
then get into my Van to be driven around.
  Here are my suggestions:
1. Have someone take your blood pressure when this is transpiring to get a
good idea how low it is actually going.
2. Start wearing an abdominal Binder if you are not already doing so. In
doing so helps contract the diaphragm and increases the blood pressure, at
least in my case.

3. If your BP is going to low, you might want to talk to your physician about
having ephedrine on hand for really difficult times.
4. If it is at all possible, you need to eat lighter meals. For me this is
impractical as I am alone most of the day and need to maintain my blood sugar,
but I try to factor in that I will usually have to sit back for anywhere from
30 minutes to one hour before getting on with my normal daily activities.
5. I also had a doctor suggests that I sleep with my head inclined at a 30°
angle. I haven't been able to do this too much, but when I do I have noticed I
am able to get going much quicker.
I hope this helps. Also make sure you take a look at all the other responses
as they additionally have a lot of experience dealing with issues like this.

I have been living by myself for three or four years now. Similar to Mike, I
rely on an ECU and have quite a few things I can do while I am in bed. I sleep
on an air mattress now, but I used to have a lateral rotational mattress.
Since I have always slept on a specialty mattress, this wasn't a problem when I
decided to go it alone. My biggest concern was how to get medication when no
one was here. Well, having access to an ECU and a hospital bed which will move
up and down with that ECU, I only had to figure out how to get something to
hold the medication so I could get it when I wanted.
Well, I had an old microphone stand with a boom on it (like a piano boom),
which I purchased from RadioShack, so, using paper tape I managed to get one of
those plastic film covers affixed to the edge of the boom so that I could get
that with my tongue and let the medicine fall into my mouth.
In my particular case, however, I have a really good support system with very
trusted caregivers. I couldn't do it otherwise. I also have pretty good
neighbors around here, albeit they're not as good as my previous neighborhood.

luckily had an appointment scheduled to get a facial. I don't have these very
often, usually every year or two, but this one felt great considering how bad I
was doing emotionally at that time.
The sad thing is that night I ended up with two rather large spots on my chest
there were ozzing. Well, I had my caregivers use 4x4s to get rid of the
discharge and then the next day did the same thing. However, the following day
I decided to put on a dressing and needed to shave my really hairy chest in
order to accomplish this. Once we saw how nasty these things look after the
shaving (I used the trimmer that wouldn't take off any excess skin) I
immediately decided to go in and see the doctor.

I just thought I would get advice on how to dress the wounds properly, but he
was extremely concerned. He thought it was a bacterial infection or something
else. He tried to call dermatology, but they wouldn't see me, even though I
have an appointment coming up this Tuesday. Now I am at home with an
antibiotic and dressing the wound three times a day. We still don't know if
there was something that was transferred during the facial, but I find it
difficult to believe that something used on my face could cause so much damage
on my chest. Especially when you know that my facial skin is extraordinarily
sensitive.

I'll let you know what the verdict is when I get back from dermatology on
Tuesday. Needless to say, I needed to get a few things off my chest.
