I take three oxy 40s per day6am, 2pm, 11pm. I do have days that I cannot

2017-09-21 Thread Bryce Willis
Well BJ, back in 93 I drove headlong into a tree in my van and shattered both
legs. Both had to be in casts for several months. My knees were shattered all
to pieces. A very ugly situation. I developed pressure sores everywhere the
cast touched me. Heels, ankles, sides of knees. It took many months to
recuperate. Make sure you cut a hole in the cast wherever it touches you.

Has anyone ever used this for bladder spasms? If so, thoughts?

Myrbetriq is a once daily pill that mellows bladder spasms but
doesn’t
affect acetylcholine; instead it quiets the bladder by
stimulating Beta 3
receptors in the bladders muscle cells and doesn’t cause
cognitive or
other severe side effects that often accompany anticholinergics.
It
received approval by the FDA for treating overactive bladder.

How about this. I got my new Invacare storm last November. About a month ago it

to disconnect the batteries. I think I described this earlier. Well the repair
guy came by a couple of weeks ago and determined that the problem was in the
joystick/control. I called them yesterday and they said they will not recognize
the warranty because the unit had apparently been wet. This thing has never
felt even a sprinkle! I have a strong desire to strike somebody with great
force. What a bunch of crooks and liars! Any suggestions? Invacare wants my
insurance to pay for it. Well of course they do. Bunch of greedy $);&:@!

Now I get prescription to fix my old chair. They called and said they no longer

They said, Sorry, we didn't realize it was a different group name. So its

The name of the chair place I get from my insurance.1 star rated, very bad BBB

buy out of network. Can take another 15 days. What hassles.

Let me clarify a bit. When I hit the off button, the screen stays lit but says

I sold the posting last week for 31 years, mine is 51 on July 10.

A lot of water has gone over the dam sinc the day, I married and remain so
today, three stepchildren, nine grandchildren and one dog.

When one door was slammed shut, it seemed that God would open another. I
operated a successful electronics business for 30 years, acquired some rental
properties, built a second home in the mountains and life was good.

It was good. I crossed the threshold about two years ago and now I believe I
have traded quality for quantity. I probably will be facing surgery in the
future and I don't believe I could expect a good outcome.

I sometimes sit at a local Riverpark and think how easy it would be to roll
down the windows of the van and drive into the drink. No, that won't happen.
I've seen firsthand what suicide does to those left behind. My brother was a
police officer and on his first solo patrol watched his best friend's father
step out in front of the car an committed suicide. He could only watch it
happen and couldn't do anything about it. The thinking back then from the
police department, keep your mouth shut don't talk about it and it wil go away.
It went away, or more so he did.

I've had a good life and don't regret much. I used to always make the statement
if God would have only given me one good hand, how much farther I could've
gone. well, then I went to an event, sat with a fellow quad and his wife
needed to feed him. I promise God right there and then I would never make that
statement again.

Will I be here for 52, only God knows that. I do know that I made an influence
on many people's lives and God used me in ways I could never have dreamed.

Take care and hang in there, let's see about 52.

Glenn Henry

About the best treatment is exercise/movement that keeps the joints and muscles

Regarding contraction, while in a nursing home, I had a similar problem to a

therapist. It helped me. After using the device, I have become a better
extending and straightening my arms while in bed.

In the long-term, you might consider e-stim. If your biceps are contracted,
that means that your triceps are extending and lengthening. You can
electrically stimulate your triceps, and other muscles, to help them contract
and strengthen. If you have partial control over your triceps, this can help
you increase that control.

If you Google estim, unfortunately, you will find a number of sexually related
devices.

But here is a place you can start: http://www.lgmedsupply.com/tensproducts.html

after the system has been selected and configured and placed on the appropriate
muscles, is relatively easy for people who are not physical therapists to
attach the pads and device.

Has anyone else tried this? How did this work for you?

I have been a quadriplegic for nearly 10 years now, and as a consequence, my
wife has taken on the role of being a family caregiver for almost 10 years.

She needs help. I have some ideas about setting up an organization to help
support family caregivers, and right now I am doing some research.

Are you aware of any helpful programs or resources or information or
organization supporting family caregivers?

Thanks so much, and take care,

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Amazon to hire 30,000 virtual customer service workers | Jesse Jones - KIRO TV

2017-04-09 Thread Bryce Willis
You are right Greg. Since the advent of chain stores, the wonderful old Main
Street shops have disappeared. The old country stores that used to dot the
landscape are also gone.I have such beautiful memories of those places.
Walmart, Target et.al. are just community killers. Now add Amazon to that list.
I must say, though, they saved our little community. We had a huge Fruit of the
Loom plant here that closed shop and moved to Central America in the late
'90's. They put over 4,000people out of work. Amazon stepped in and used their
old facilities to open a huge distribution center. They are still growing. Sure
wish I could have bought stock then. It was about $12 a share. Now it is in the
hundreds. Wow!

Amazon is great for us, but it put a lot of little guys out who can't compete
with prices. But I use them a lot. And with prime, free shipping on most thing.
Same day shipping on a lot. Just last week I needed a cord for something, had
it free shipping by dinner time. And free returns, pick at house. Great place
to do business with.

Same issue..I have wood floors and it happens most on a rug by the front door,
because I have to turn a bit to open it. I double back taped a rubber /
plastic, chair mat for office rug / chairs. A lot have spikes to they don't
move, but you can find big flat ones. If you don't mind a slight bump, a 1/8
sheet of plywood works too. You don't see it much.

I do know the hospital blue boots, but quite frankly, I believe that they have
saved my boney feet and ankles from many sores over the years.
In healing sores, I've found that a high protein diet is essential. A sore
will drain protein from your system like nothing else.
Don't turn your nose up to those nasty drinks. Just give in and choke it down.
At least 140 grams per day.

Hey William,

I am sorry to hear about your ongoing problems, but this type of thing seems to
be running rampant this past year, with many of us on this list no matter how
hard we try for the breakdowns not to happen!

I have never had a Roho cushion as I have always used a rotating air mattress.
but I posted a couple of weeks ago or a little bit longer what is going on with
me as a result of a careless nurse ruining my urethra. By stretching it. This
leads to urine draining around the catheter, which I have never had in my life,
which gives a Domino effect of skin breakdown -- most of which was causing my
old battle wounds that I had between 2009 and 2012, whereby that very fragile
skin will never get back to as strong as it was.

To add insult to injury, and for the first time in my life a wound opened deep
in the crease of my groin and for my safety [so any wrong movement or urinary
bacteria by getting up in my chair] I have been staying in bed. It has been a
little over 3 weeks now. They are both now closed but fragile, so I will wait a
few more days to give it a chance to seal a little longer for lack of better
words.

I DID get up on Tuesday of this week to go see my urologist about the strategy
of what to do about this urinary leaking and I was going over very smooth roads
and did not go over any extraordinary bumps or anything. And it is only 10
minutes away. But in that time I got an abrasion over my right is she'll
tuberousity, which is caused by shearing. My Roho Cushion has served me well
for shearing and that is why I started using one beginning in 2010/2011
timeframe. So I could get up after my old battle wounds were mostly closed and
then closed.

What I have noticed a great correlation to happen is between all the stress I
have been through over the last six months (because of what happened to me
around February 1, of having my urethra stretched terribly, but of which I did
not report at the time, because I did not think it would hurt long-term. And
there was really no way I could "prove" that one particular nurse did it under
the circumstances).

Being without any family is what hurts the most and none of this would have
happened had my sister and brother-in-law been able to keep me living with them
and they very well could have because they took me in for 3 1/2 years after my
husband's passing for what I thought would be much longer than that . And they
had nowhere for me to go because there was no accessible houses or apartments
in their town or around it. They did not even think twice about the
consideration of putting me in a nursing home I have always been an active
person and I was getting great care by hiring morning and evening caregivers 7
days a week and I had a great home health agency providing me with all nursing
needs and 3 morning home health aide visits, which Medicare Certified Home
Health Agencies started to cut way back on, starting in 1999 thanks to the
Clinton administration.

Their reasons for not being able to keep me on more selfish ones in my humble
opinion. Besides, the three or four other family members lived in the same area
and they could have kept "sharing the care" outside of my morning and evening
caregivers. For example, I can feed myself and I was eating with them or if
they went on vacation and my other sister would come down to help me during the
day and overnight if I needed anything. My sister had to take me to doctors
appointments, but they were only a few times a year.

Everything was going great when living with my sister and brother-in-law and
having other family around, but after they were forcing me to "move on" I had
to decide what I had to do and do it quickly. Since my husband

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Chair Problems

2016-06-26 Thread Bryce Willis
Nikki, I have that very same chair and joystick.Five days ago it decided to do
something similiar. When I turn it off, the screen freezes in the gear I was
in. It won't turn off or go back in gear. I have to disengage the batteries and
shove them in with some force to make it come back on. I too, am baffled.

[QUAD-L] Aqua cel

2016-05-05 Thread Bryce Willis
You guys know a good substitute for aqua cel? I use it on pressure sores and it
is very effective. Trouble is a two inch square is five dollars! I can't handle
that. All suggestions welcome. Larry

Fwd: [QUAD-L] a question

2016-04-06 Thread Bryce Willis
Ah yes. Saw a show on tv a couple of years ago about people who felt they were
in the wrong body. They believed they were supposed to be disabled. I remember
one fellow put his leg in a bucket of dry ice until it was destroyed, had to be
amputated. The fellow was overjoyed. He said that leg never belonged to him.
Well, I would be glad to trade bodies with someone (if they were strong and
healthy). I cannot imagine wanting to be a quad!

That is a great analogy. The difference in current and voltage is an important
point as well.

To every Rule, there are some exceptions. I've read a couple stories here that
exceeded the normal and that is good. Since wheelchairs ARE medical devices,
why risk one's mobility by exceeding the normal? Always have a plan B or
backup device.

When batteries, the energy inside the battery is the size of golf balls, with
each overnight charge the size of the energy is reduced to the size of marbles,
until each battery can hold almost 14 volts of energy. As the battery ages...
those marbles of energy reverse back to the size of golf balls. The batteries
will continue to hold 12 volts, but lose the ability to retain amperage.

Best Wishes

I remember my first power chair in 1979, an E that used wet cell batteries.
They would boil over and make an unreal mess. My battery box looked like a
glazed donut, acid everywhere. Had to buy new ones every year. The good thing,
they weren't too expensive… about $90 for a set. And my insurance paid 90% of
that. Have things ever changed!….

Since then I have only plugged the wheelchair in when the batteries show they

seven more years, then a Quickie for seven years, then a PerMobile for five

people think I am crazy when I tell them that, but that is the way it is. I
wait to plug the wheelchair in until the display shows that is basically fully
discharged. If I expect to be going a lot the next day I may plug it in sooner.
I am in the wheelchair every day for about 11 hours so it does get used quite a
bit.

That's my wife and son. Somehow our accounts get crossed and names mixed up.
Should be Larry on all of them. Gracias etc.

I cath twice a day, take ditropan, and am usually ok. If I overdo the coffee or

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Lift repair

2015-10-30 Thread Bryce Willis
My lift went bad last summer and I kept a running account of it on here. You
guys were a big help finding manuals, diagrams, etc. for me. Anyway, the shop
in Louisville who installed the lift two years prior said the main circuit
board was bad and would cost around $1000. Then they said oops, that board is
obsolete and no longer available. Sorry about your luck. To shorten the story,
a friend at church took a look at it, replaced a three dollar relay, and
problem solved. They are good at following diagrams to install or replace but
could not diagnose an empty tank.

Joan, that is a beautiful story. You are such a kind, gentle person, yet strong

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old, Panic

2015-09-29 Thread Bryce Willis
Don, that is one of the best posts I have read in a long time! Intelligent,
passionate, informative, and captivating. I agree that panic is entirely
mental, but oh what power it has! Your third paragraph really hits home because
I've experienced the same thing. It is the helplessness, the anger, the fear,
the heart and blood pounding irrationally in the ears, and the exploding head
that set things off. Thanks for sharing, Don. Embrace the night and all that it
brings, Calm my soul as the night bird sings.

[QUAD-L] Joyless stick

Those of you with Invacare chairs -- do you have a problem with the joystick
knob popping off? I have tried everything...glue, tape, prayer...nothing seems
to work. Anybody got a solution?

Same problem here but not as severe. Sometimes I start shaking for no
discernible reason. Can't tell if I am hot or cold. Then the cold sweat feels
like icicles. Miserable as hell. Wish I could quit this whole disgusting game.

I pretty much have all those problems too Greg...and at times my back will be
sweaty hot and top of my body freezing as I lay in bed, It drives my wife
crazy because she is always hot with air and fan on us while i'm miserable
and cold. I guess it's part of Quad life..I think a lot is nerve damage plus
with me I have diabetes that causes even more nerve damage. Dan H***

As I mentioned a number of times I am going crazy at night. I wake up a bunch
of times, with my arms bent tight to my chest, shivering. I swear I'm
freezing cold, but it's very warm in my room, and I can feel the heat coming
out from under the covers. I feel exactly the same when I'm warm or cold,
shiver just as bad. If I get up, the worst of the shivering starts to go away
 in about 10 minutes.

I started to wear a t-shirt at night, I cut the back off, and half the
length. It did help a lot, that way I did not nee to cover my arms ad pull
the blanket up tight. But it still happens often.

I do not know if this is heat related. Am I too hot, to cold.
Or is it (nerve / blood flow) related. I put my arms down at night, but a
yawn, deep breath, spasm, my arm naturally just bend back up. Then the colder
I feel, the tighter I squeeze my arms bent. Am I squeezing the blood flow
 off..

At night my arms feel like they are in ice water. So last night I tried a
long sleeve shirt cut up. I think it did help my arms but I know I woke up
overheated. I had to get it off. My arms are so sensitive feeling. The hairs
are always sticking up, like when cold, even outside when it is over 100.

Anyone find a fix for this? I'm going crazy not sleeping.

 Thanks, Greg

2015-08-09 Thread Bryce Willis
For the first 22 years of my Quadom, things went pretty well. No sores, no
pain, no depression. Then on 7-14-93 I crashed head-on into a large maple tree.
It broke me up pretty bad. Shattered my knees, my ankle, leg, messed up my
hips..and basically put me at death's door for a few days. Wasn't
pleasant. That was the beginning of the problems I have today. It was tolerable
at first, but the last5-6 years have been awful. Doc told me this would happen.
And he was right. Now I have some big decisions to make. Not good.

I'm writing this for any new quads on the list because I see things
differently than most of those who have responded to this post.

I will be 33 years post injury on August 15th--C5-6 complete quad due to
diving accident. At this time I would love nothing more than to someday be
the oldest living quad. I suppose I can say that because I don't have the
debilitating pain or issues many on this list speak of. I'm not saying this
to undermine their struggles--I know I'm very lucky.

I get up every day looking forward to the adventure ahead. I am thankful for
every moment I have and I try to radiate that positive vibe to every person
I meet. I don't always succeed, and I have bad days just like everybody
else. Still, my greatest fear is dying too soon, not dying too old.

As others have said here: they were fine living as quads for years and then
things just fell apart. I know that is a possibility for me, too. That
realization adds even greater urgency to every day--I want to experience
everything I possibly can while I'm healthy.

So, for any new quads on this list, let me be testimony that life as a quad
can be full, happy, active and rewarding, even after 33 years. I only speak
for myself, but I know I'm not alone.

I wish you all health and happiness,

Doctors discovered last month that my good friend Lisa had polyps in her large

Marc. She trusted him so she did not question Marc before the surgery. Mistake.
Her period had just started and she was on blood thinner. Well, he was very

Marc would use to slow the bleeding. Fortunately, he gave her an anti-coagulant
and proceeded to remove half her intestine. Now she has a semi-colon instead of

There are so many factors that go into how long a quad will live. Quality of
care, mindset, genetics, age of injury, severity of injury, male or female,
climate, weight, support in general, injury complications, drug use, quality of
doctor and hospital care, decisions made, and many more.
