Re: [QUAD-L] Females! Do you use ostomy pouches for urine only?
My gosh Julie, what you have had to go through! So sorry however I have a stupid question, do you now have to use two bags? For both bowel and bladder? Meredith Sent from my LG Mobile -- Original message--From: Julie Napper Date: Sat, May 6, 2017 6:25 PMTo: Carrie Pinter;quad-list;Subject:RE: [QUAD-L] Females! Do you use ostomy pouches for urine only? Hi Carrie, Here goes. 1. 54 years old 2. I had an indwelling catheter 3. I had a few complications. First, I lost blood, so I was given blood afterwards. Second, my bowels did not want to wake up. So, after 3 or 4 days, I had a NG tube put in my nose, which was horrible!! I was fed by IV. After about 1 1/2 weeks, my bowels woke up and I went home. Then, I was admitted to the hospital a week later because my blood count was low, which made me feel really bad. It turned out that the NG tube gave my stomach an ulcer. That was an easy fix with giving me more blood and medication that I took for a few months. I was in the hospital 2 days No bleeding since. My bladder was removed and my female organs. The cancer didn't go beyond my bladder wall. 4. My life is easier in the sense that I don't have to worry about my catheter plugging, leaking or being pulled out. Before the cancer was found, I was leaking really bad, more than I ever did. But, someone still has to change my pouch twice a week or more, depending on if it leaks. I use a leg and bed bag as before, so nothing new there. I thunk it's turning out to be better than having a catheter. It saved my life. 5. My stoma area is healrhy. I've had a few UTi's. Also, when I had a CT scan done last December, it was determined my left urether was a little narrow, but putting a stent in for a few months cured that. I'm having another scan next month, so hopefully it's all good. Sorry this was so long, but I hope it's useful info . If I forgot anything, I'll let you know. Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old
Greg, I was diagnosed with HO when I was first injured 36 yrs ago. It caused me to be lopsided and over the yrs made my other hip and leg to become jacked up causing me major pain in the last few years. Didn't know back then that it could be helped with radiation.Meredith Sent from my LG Mobile -- Original message--From: greg Date: Thu, Apr 6, 2017 2:09 PMTo: quad-list@eskimo.com;Subject:RE: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old I was fine for 20+ years after my injury, no meds, pain was not great, but could deal with it. But after a hip injury, I developed Heterotopic Ossification (HO). When your bones try and heal they start growing calcium, but when you have HO, the calcium does not stop growing. It grows like tree branches into your muscles. Have to take meds and use radiation to stop the growing. They will only cut it out if it grows so much you loose range of motion. Because it grows into the muscle, it's a very bloody surgery, and that is a main cause to restart the growing. Without pain meds, my leg will not go straight. Spasms are so bad, I grunt, almost pull myself out of my chair, and the worst thing is my chest gets so heavy it's hard to breath. Like someone is sitting on my chest. If I miss my meds, within hours my body is like 1 solid muscle clinch. They almost OD me trying to raise Baclofen high enough to ease my spasms. Many tests to find the cause. Finely took pain meds for my shoulder and it was like life changing difference. Docs said no way would pain meds stop spasms, I need more Baclofen. I went in and showed them, I'm not spasming. Then finely they agreed it was pain causing the spasms. And they found the cause. Everyone feels pain differently, has different causes. Both can have pain for same issue, but one be in more pain. Not just let it get to them more. Just can't quantify pain in different people. 5 quads can each have shoulder pain, different causes, different location, different nerves. I would be hard pressed to call a pain a 9 out of 10, because I can always think of something that could hurt more. My shoulder makes me want to rock, but a hot needle in my eye would be worse. Greg

I was driving a station wagon Pinto. A very light car. I hit loose gravel lost control and rolled it into a very deep ditch. Of course back then no one wore seatbelts. My friends fell out of the car and I was thrown through the windshield. How that happen is beyond everyone because there is very little room between the steer wheel and roof, that is probably why when I went out my forehead hit the rim where the windshield was attached. It caused my neck to bend backward breaking at an angel of C5,6,7 and scalping me in an L shape. They doctors at the time thought the spinal cord was completely severed once I was able to get an MRI years later they found there was a little still attached which expand how I had full use of shoulders and biceps. I was lucky my friend was able to get up and go get help because I was laying in the middle of the gravel road and no one would have seen me until it was too late so God was watching over me that way. I was blessed with no internal injuries and no brain damage. Luckily my scalp was able to be cleaned and folded back in place. Surprisingly my hair even grew back which they did not expect. The ambulance driver and attendant were family friends, it was harder on them seeing someone they knew. But it was a small community so I am sure they knew everyone they helped. I was taken to a local hospital then Life flown to Iowa Methodist Medical Center/hospital IN Des Moines IA where I spent three weeks in ICU, 3 weeks in the hospital the went Younkers which was attached to IMMC. I was there from the beginning of July until January 1st 1982. I was able to stay caught up with my senior class while I was in Yonkers. When I got out I joined my class of 34(that is including me.) I graduated with them.Small town people rally together and help. Where did the time go from that moment when I fell off the scaffolding and tried to move my arm and realized it did not respond? That was the start of my new life, and although it is not always a home run, it certainly is not a strikeout either. So many people who have helped me, encouraged me, devised a little something that made my life better, cuddled me when I needed it, scolded me when I needed it, and just simply told me to buckle down and get on with life. Thanks to each and every one and you know who you are. Family, friends, therapists, doctors, and yes many strangers. To every little kid (some of them not so little but just as curious) who asked me why I was in a wheelchair, how did I drive my chair without my hands or arms, who offered to help me, I say thank you and bless you that you accepted me for the person I am, especially the young one who wanted to race me and when I won told me to get out of my chair and he would drive it and win! I love you all. I appreciate all of the strangers who are so helpful and kind and open doors for me without my asking, offer to carry my packages out to my car, ask me if I would like a drink from my cup on my wheelchair, or would I like something to eat while I am waiting for someone at the food court to pick up our orders. I don't believe for a minute that the majority of people do not want to help or look down upon me in the wheelchair. Conversely, I love the smiles, the how are you doings, and the people who say- isn't it a great day to be outdoors or shopping or whatever. To the very few and far between people who say or imply something such as " my you really know how to use the wheelchair" I try to smile and reply " you do really well on your feet also" and make them laugh. They probably will think twice the next time. Being a total C4 quadriplegic was definitely not my game plan for my life, but honestly things could have been worse and I am looking forward to what the future holds. I have already outlived by 10 years what they told me at rehab in 1990, so hopefully the rest will be a piece of cake! Thanks for letting me celebrate 25 years.

No one in pain wants to hear this but the fact is you must find another drug or device while you detox. The drug needs to come from another family of drugs. Altering your medications and using milder drugs whatever the pain isn't quite as bad can help extend the use of Norco or vicodin. Woke up overheated which sometimes causes a claustrophobic / panic feeling. I felt panicked and like I could not get enough of a breath. I also felt like I was going to get sick. I thought maybe a UTI or something. They were worried about my heavy chest, so I had an x-ray, CAT scan, which lead to an angioplasty. Luckily everything came out fine. They think my heavy chest is from my spine curving causing pressure. So they are setting up an appointment with a lung doctor soon. I did have a UTI also. But I get so frustrated with this stupid panic feeling. I worry about everything and can't stop. I worry about that I'm going to worry. Wake up feeling like I just have to get up into my chair. It's a scary panic. It use to happen maybe once every few years, but lately it's more often. I think it's my heavy chest making it worse. I just don't feel like I'm getting enough oxygen. The doc says the lung doc might subscribe an oxygen tank at night. Once the feeling is one, I feel so stupid about worrying about that stuff. Getting overheated seems to be the trigger point most of the time. The problem is I feel so cold at night, even shivering. I would swear I'm cold… But if I uncover a bit and cool off, I actually get better. So I swear I'm cold, but actually I'm too hot. This only started a few years ago. Anyone else have that issue? I'm sure it's a nerve ending issue. But I just shake I feel so cold, problem is sometimes it is because I'm cold. So anything I do to get warmer only makes me shiver more and get more overheated. So I just don't know if I'm hot or cold, it feels exactly the same. No fun getting old, Greg

Re: [QUAD-L] Robin Williams story
Wow, quite the story. It is the same for me. When I was first injured I tried 3 times to overdose but finally decided that I had to get with the program. I was much better for decades after that but as I've gotten older I feel myself falling into that same ol feeling of dread. In fact I was super depressed all weekend and when I heard the news about Robin Williams it made me sad but also knocked some sense into me. You CAN pull yourself out, it isn't easy, also I love my dog too much. I had this idea of a plastic cap like a membrane( goes on your head) that could hold water and have little holes on the bottom side It would have a tube going to to a water reservoir and a egg shaped pump you could press on to push the water from the reservoir, up the tube in the hat and out the holes onto the whole surface of your head. You could disguise this device with a ballcap or boonie hat. It would immediately cool you down with a couple pumps. maybe even find a better way to activate the pump without pushing. Would be so valuable. I use a mini hairspray bottle to cool me off. nobody gets the fact that quads don't sweat. Nobody ever believes me. As far as the A.D. issue, I'm a T10 para so I'm just below the cutoff for A.D., but it is a very good question and one I would discuss with your doctor. The way you go about getting it is to either ask your doctor and/or nurse practicioner about it or write an email to the folks at Peristeen, made by Coloplast: us-perist...@coloplast.com Or call Rita Ward at Coloplast at: (612) 337-7856 The entire system is small and fits into a bag the size of shaving kit and/or small woman's purse. I travel with my Peristeen system, it fits easily into my suitcase and/or carry on bag on a plane. It is designed to be used while sitting upright--on the toilet. I use the system while sitting on a standard commode. I have full use of my hands and arms--I find it very easy to use. Setting up the system from the box takes about a minute. It takes about another minute and a half to fill up the water bag with tap water, attach the rectal catheter. The next step is inserting the catheter, filling up the catheter balloon and adding water to the colon via squeezing a a rubber hand pump. On average the entire process--filling the water bag with water through pumping water into the colon (bowel)--takes me about 4-5 minutes. Once water is in the colon, the catheter is removed and it is a matter of sitting and waiting--I find it a good time to catch up on reading or listening to my favorite podcasts. Time to empty the colon (bowel) varies from about 20 minutes to 40 minutes. For me it takes 30 minutes, like clockwork. Everybody is different, for some reason I find I empty in three waves about 10-minutes apart. It still amazes me how much comes out--at least 3-4 times more than I've ever managed to empty with digital stim, suppositories, or using standard enemas. Again in my survey of one I give the system a 10. Since starting using Peristeen in November I have had zero accidents and (despite risking Murphy's law) for the first time since I was injured 29 1/2 years ago, I don't think or worry about bowel accidents. I also feel much better. As I wrote earlier today, I recently had my yearly KUB (kidney, ureter, bowel) X-ray to check for kidney stones. Over the past decade or so these X-rays always included a statement by the radiologist that said something like difficult to see because of stool, meaning I was full of s#%t. My urology nurse practicioner showed me my current X-ray and compared it to a previous X-ray and said you can see that you have much less stool in this X-ray. In my old X-rays it was easy to see that my entire colon (bowel) was full, even though I had done a bowel program the morning of the X-ray. In the current X-ray it is easy to see that the 2nd half of my bowel (1/2 of my transverse colon and my entire descending colon=2 1/2 feet of colon) is empty. Probably way more than you wanted to know but really important to me. Bob V On Jul 27, 2014, at 12:02 PM, jume9...@comcast.net wrote: blockquote How do you go about getting the Peristeen? Great question! The ansere is, Yes! Peristeen will work if you do your bowel program (BP) laying on your side! In a perfect world it is better to do a bowel program works better when you are upright for two reasons. 1, When you are in an upright position, gravity helps in emptying. 2 It is easier when the contents of the BP fall directly into the toilet. However I understand that in the real world doing a BP in an upright position isn't possible for a variety of reasons. I had my BP done on my side (by a nurse or aid) for the first 1 1/2 months when I was first injured. And for for several periods of time, years after my SCI I had other injuries or surgeries and had to do my BP on my side because I couldn't sit upright. The challenge in doing a BP with the Peristeen system laying on your side is you will need to collect have enough pads, chucks, or other collection system to collect an extra 500cc to 700cc of liquid (500cc equals two measuring cups, 700cc equals 2.8) along with the regular amount of stool that comes out. In my survey of one, if I had another injury or medical situation that prevented me from sitting upright and I had to do my BP laying on my side (fingers crossed and *knocking wood* this doesn't happen) I would still use Peristeen laying on my side. Wow, Nan, that was almost exactly my story, from my boyfriend being there to them cutting off a borrowed swimsuit. Some things you never forget. Meredith - Original Message - From: Nan nlg52...@yahoo.com To: quad-list quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2014 4:34:18 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject! June 7, 1968. A day just like today. It was a Friday ... I woke up, did all my primping and went to school ... I was a sophomore in HS and my world was perfect. My parents had opened our pool earlier in the week, so I had invited my best friend and our boyfriends over for a swim after school. We got home about 2:30 and headed out back - full of youthful enthusiasm. We hit the pool playfully, used the diving board and the slide ... we were having a blast. Sometime before 3:30 (the details about time are a bit fuzzy), I took my last step. I walked to the slide, climbed the ladder, put my hands over my head and gracefully slid down hands first. The minute my head hit the water I felt a zing and everything stopped. I just floated in the water ... it felt like I was doing the jellyfish (aka dead man's) float, but I realized I couldn't move. I knew I was in trouble, and wondered if anyone else knew it. I directed my thoughts to my boyfriend ... Paul, help me. Please, see me. Please He was the only one who realized I wasn't playing. (I think I do believe in telepathy.) They pulled me up into the air, and I could breathe again. The next thing I remember is laying on the pool deck. It was hard to get a deep breath, but I was breathing on my own. People kept putting my hands across my stomach, and they would just fall off... again and again. I still don't know why they did that. Eventually a sheriff came - he wanted to do artificial respiration, but my neighbor sternly told him not to lay a f***ing finger on me. I was shocked to hear an adult use that word ... no one I knew used it back then. Finally an ambulance came, about 45 minutes after my accident. They lifted me onto their gurney (n o manual stabilization, no C-collar, no back board ), slid me into the back of the ambulance and placed a sandbag on either side of my neck. We rode to the hospital with one guy kneeling over me holding the sand bags and the other blaring the siren the whole way. Gave me one hell of a headache! At the hospital they cut off my bathing suit - I was so embarrassed. I was also appalled ... it was a borrowed suit after all - I scolded them for wrecking it. My memories start to fade out at that point. I did hear the clippers as they shaved off most of my hair and the drill as they prepared to place the Crutchfield tongs in my head, but that was all. Much later, I found out that the doctors had given me a 5% chance ... of surviving. I am 62 years old, and have forgotten so much of my life, yet these memories remain crystal clear. Time has not clouded them. You'd think by now these memories would only bring remembrance ... not regret and sorrow. Usually I celebrate each anniversary - the survival of one more year. This year, however, it's hit me hard. I am not needed as I once was. I am so lonely. Being dependent on others sucks. I want a do over - another chance. I don't want to be a quad any more. Thanks, O Quads, for being there to hear me.

Nothing in this case required the guard to resort to what he did. The fact the person was disabled and under 18 comes into play. He should have left the kid alone when things escalated. Spitting on the guard was a poor decision by the disabled kid, but he should have got away and cooled off then came back. The guard should be put on suspension upon further investigation. My mother and wife both have physical problems that make me weep. My wife, Melissa, has heart and blood pressure problems plus edema and recurring pleurisy that hangs over our heads like a dark cloud. My mom is nearly 81. She still gets around, but I can see a difference in her nearly every day. And all I can do is be an added burden. I know life is precious, and I have been blessed with two beautiful kids and a 31-year job as a teacher. I am causing pain and physical damage to my wife as she rolls and tugs me around. She can barely walk for the back pain. It just seems to be all downhill for all of us. Thanks to everyone for letting me blow steam. Here's my short answer: No, I've never wished not to wake up. In fact, the opposite is true for me--I go to sleep every night praying that I get another opportunity to be alive tomorrow. But, it's not a simple question to answer, is it? I consider myself extremely lucky because 32 years post-injury I don't have the debilitating pain many of you describe. I don't have any pressure sores or kidney stones; my bladder and bowels function well and I still don't need Viagra. I'm not bragging; I am grateful for everything I have. My first thought is that you have to be honest with yourself, Bobbie. Is this simply a temporary period of 'the blues,' or do you possibly have clinical depression? It's a very important distinction because depression does have a physiological basis and can be effectively helped with medical intervention. If you are having suicidal thoughts I beg you to seek a mental health hotline--I guarantee there's one available in your community. On the other hand, if you're just feeling down and out, having a rough go of things at the moment, then I'm glad you had the guts to mention it here. Yes, I honestly think it took great courage to share a weak moment here, to be vulnerable. 'Us people' with disabilities are always held up as inspirational; we're fonts of strength and wisdom because we survived a disability. We all know what a bunch of bullshit that is. Partly, that misconception is fed by the media and their fixation on the 'supercrip.' I'm sorry, but if I see one more news story about a guy climbing Half Dome in Yosemite using only his tongue I'm going to puke! All of us here know we're just regular human beings, getting up, doing our business, going to bed. Guess what? Sometimes we even have bad days! However, Bobbie (and all), it is my firm belief that--barring medical issues causing depression--we (and only we) have the power to make ourselves happy. I don't just believe that, I know it. It's somewhat ironic that I read your email, entitled To wake, or not to wake up? the same day I started reading 'The Last Lecture,' by Randy Pausch. For those of you unfamiliar with Mr Pausch's Last Lecture, he's a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University who learned he had only a few months to live due to pancreatic cancer. His accurately-titled 'last lecture' is available on youtube and shouldn't be missed. The irony is that this man endured mind-boggling surgeries and procedures so he could have even a chance at living a few days longer, and here we are talking about throwing away precious days, weeks, years. I'm reading the book because my father--the strongest man I've ever known--has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. I'm not judging anyone here. I can't walk a mile in your shoes (to use an exceedingly inappropriate cliche,) so I don't have the right, or desire, to lecture anyone. But, as I said, I know that we have the ability to choose (yes, choose) happiness and gratefulness in our lives. HOW you do that is going to be very much an individual thing. There are a million self-help books out there, and a few of them are even good, but that journey is yours to take on your own. Having said that, I still feel the compulsion to make a few suggestions (once I start typing I just can't stop--sorry!) First of all, one has to make the mind shift from what we've lost (or can't do,) to what we still have available (or can do.) If you can see, be thankful. If you can hear, be grateful. If you can think, praise the heavens. Somebody wrote that they miss the simple things,

I knew right then and there I did something wrong. I ended up flying through the air, in slow motion, at 30 miles an hour on till I hit the side of a very large jump head on. While I was in the air I knew when I hit the ground I was going to either die instantly or break my neck and be paralyzed for life. I landed on my left side, when I opened my eyes I saw the dirt and thought I was buried until Eddie came and turned me onto my back. He said Are you alright? I told him immediately No, I broke my neck. Call an ambulance and get me a blanket because I'm in shock. It was so very, very strange. How could I possibly know that I broke my neck? Letting it hang, or trying to lift my arm above my neck. just is painful as heck. It's the muscles around my right shoulder. First goes the muscle on the side on my shoulder. Then goes the one on the top. Though I can't feel much of my arm I get shooting pains down to my elbow. Lastly goes my collarbone area. At that point I can hardly move my arm. Yet, in bed on my back, I can move it as much as I want with no pain. I might have hurt it trying to move my computer or the table it's on while laying in bed. I put my hand under the table then try lifting up and trying to roll the table towards or away from me. It's an awkward thing and might have straining a muscle. I go to a doc tommarow. But damn right after my butt gets better, it starts hurting to much to stay up very long. Greg

I can sit in the sun for long times in hot weather and feel fine. A few times I have gotten overheated, but at those times I felt hot and overheated. And in Seattle at night I would use a blanket, a sheet, and a heavy comforter. And all through the night I felt toasty warm. But the last few years when I'm in bed daytime or night, but mostly nighttime. Just using a sheet and one blanket. When my arms are covered. I can feel like I am freezing cold, I can even be shivering. I can turn up the heat, I can add a blanket, but I just feel colder. I often check my temperature and it is about 97 or there about, my normal temperature is about 96.5. I am so sure that I am cold, my arms feel like all the hair is standing up and my arms are shaking. Then I realize what must be happening, that I'm overheated. So I uncover my arms and at first, when the air gets my arms I feel even a bit colder. But as my arms cool off they start to feel better, no longer hot or cold. But then in the middle of the night they get cold again from being uncovered. So it is damned if I do, damned if I don't. My arms often feel cold and tingly, except when the sun is shining on them. But only when under covers do they get to bad. When I sit under the furnace vent and get warm I don't shivering like that. When I fall asleep with my arms covered I wake up shivering, my arms are clenched tight, and I would bet everything I have that I am cold. Obviously I would lose that bet. I can't figure out how to stay warm night, without feeling like I'm freezing. Greg

Since I sleep on my stomach, it's relatively easy for me. Every night we put a chux under me and one between my legs to catch the results. Before I put my blankets on, my aide inserts a dulcolax suppository. That means that I have all night to fully empty and 99.9% of the time there is no suppository residue.
