When I need medical question(s) answered, I go to the experts - and
that would be the Quad List. You guys are awesome. As you might
remember, I have a Supra Pubic cath and use a hospital bed. Like the
idiot that I am, I would lay the night time drainage bag at my feet.
And here's the stupid part. I have contracture's so I sleep with two
pillows under my knees and the foot of the bed cranked all the way
up. Talk about trying to pee uphill!

So after reading all your great advice, I now hang the bag on the
side of the bed even with my Supra Pubic. The excess tubing is coiled
and pinned next to my hip. I place a plastic bin on the floor under the bag.

What a difference! I sleep much better and I don't wake up every
morning with a bulging bladder. I know, I know, I'm an idiot. But
with all the urologists I've seen you'd think one of them would tell
the newbe about such things - at least hand out a pamphlet or
something. Thanks again.

push me down a rounded curb in my manual chair by pushing on by backside
with her knee when the footrests got stuck on the street. I love her
dearly but I don't let her get behind me anymore. We had a heated chat about
the

euthenized as a solution to her predicament. I brought her to tears as she
thought it was an understandable ending and I didn't. I softened after I
actually saw the movie. I was partly getting back at her for the knee in the
back push she gave me.

I never had any problems with low potassium before or since the following
happened to me:

I got bronchitis in early 1997. I was not able to cough stuff up and I
could not find anyone around to teach the quad cough. However, my asthma
inhaler helped me breathe better so I began using it *at least once* a day
and probably more.

I finally had to make a trip to the ER and they wanted to eliminate
pneumonia so they took me in for a chest X-ray. This was after doing a
blood workup. While I was getting a chest x-ray -- a nurse came flying in
with the two biggest bills I have ever seen and told me that I needed to
take them immediately because of my low potassium level.

Come to find out later -- Albuterol (which is found in most inhalers) can
lower your potassium significantly if used regularly. My potassium must
have been dangerously low for the nurse not even wanting to wait until I was
out of the x-ray room!

I don't use my inhaler on a regular basis and do so very very very rarely
(usually years) so I never had a problem with low potassium before my
episode or since.

I often have a potassium deficiency, but it isn't significant enough for me
to have to take supplements. The doctors seem to think my deficiency is due
to the amount of fluid I take in daily. I usually have to make sure I don't
taken too much. I also have low sodium, so I usually salt almost everything
and try to eat a banana a day.

I also put my bag in a basin at the foot of my bed. As far as whether you
should secure your catheter to your thigh, I would recommend it. I also
have a suprapubic and wouldn't dream of leaving the catheter not tethered to
my leg. I used to use leg straps, but for the last several years I have
been using Snap Locks (spelling). These are too expensive for most people
and I'm only able to get them from a source every now and then. I make them
last as long as I can.

I find a leg straps can be quite effective. As for loops, they can be
helpful, but I have had better luck with placing my bag in such a manner
that the urine is always draining down. As John rightfully put in one of
his other e-mails, back flow is a terrible enemy and one which gave me quite
a few UTIs when I was a real new injury.

i cut the end off my night bag that plugs into my catheter - and then push that
end over the bottom part of my legbag.   that system keeps the anti-flowback
valve in place and provides me with 3 quarts of storage which i don't even use

Re: [QUAD-L] Questions

2009-06-08 Thread John S.
Too much water can cause water toxosis. Water washes out the salts and
minerals, electrolytes, etc. You don't have to be a quad to do this.
As a quad we do not release hormones in normal amounts if at all. High level
quads do not produce hormones that the body needs to heal properly. Minerals,
such as calcium need these hormones to direct the healing of bones. We all
suffer a type of osteo-porosis similar to astronauts.
I've always felt an endocrinologist would be best at figuring out a way to get
synthetic hormones to help assist with these problems. They have not figured
out how to stop the calcium purge that astronauts suffer from, yet. When I was
younger I took a blend of vitamins and minerals in hope that it would help with
some of the many broken bones. It resulted in kidney and bladder stones. I
still take vitamins, but I stay away from high calcium supplements.
I'm sure they have learned a lot since those days. Please keep us informed on
what you find out? I can't get my blood pressure to balance any more. I have
high and low blood pressure spells each day. Eating small meals and anti-stress
vitamins seem to help. The key word is seem. I'd love to know if someone has
developed some real scientific data that has or may lead to a treatment.
Keep asking questions!
Oh yeah, if I do not have a gravity loop on the bed my condom catheter simply
builds pressure and blows off.

Best wishes,
john

Hey Dan...

Re: Potassium, I can't speak to it directly but I believe the body treats it
similarly to calcium. And for that my doc is sending me to an endocrinologist.
It seems that 3 years of Fosamax didn't cause any changed in my bone density
scores and he wants to find out why. (It could be going 9 mo. without while I
was completely non-weightbearing bedbound.) Maybe potassium is similar (??)
and an endocrinologist can figure out if/why use and absorbtion might be
affected.

Re: Supra and tube loops, I've never heard it helps drainage. I just know the
loop in the drainage bag tube does 2 things... 1) provides some slack so I can
move without having it pulled, and 2) if the loop stays on the bed instead of
hanging, it prevents the weight of a urine-filled, 3-ft long tube from pulling
at the stoma.

Best wishes!

I've thought of hanging it on the side of the bed frame but it pulls

this helps the drainage?!?. And lastly, should I tie the tube to my

Hi Tom,
I don't know too much about penis implants other than being a surgical nurse
during the insertion during surgery. I do know they have come along way with
the improvement of implants. You also wanted to know about medication for a
pressure sore, I have one on the gluteal fold of my left buttocks it is
almost healed. We are using nitrostatin powder, a small piece of auglicill
covered with small piece of polymehm metaphor tape. Hope this helps.

2007-08-28 Thread Quadius
I went to school for several years in order to get my bachelor's degree, but
since I finished I haven't been attending any school or have I found the
right job yet. I am still looking, but I'd really like to work from home.
It's too bad I didn't think more about what I was going to do after I got
out of school. Initially I wanted to do some writing, but right now I don't
think I can really earn anything substantial without taking some more
classes. However, that may be something I'll do next semester.

I really should have thought about taking some business courses so I might
have been able to put some of the experiences I had prior to injury to
better use. I was a training/schools/ammo noncommissioned officer for an
Army battalion. Now knowing a little bit about what goes on in life I think
that would probably make me a good human resource officer, albeit I have no
experience in the civilian sector.

As for fun, I love going to the movies when I get the opportunity. I enjoy
blogging, reading, watching sports, and watching tons of television. I also
use Dragon NaturallySpeaking in order to operate my computer.

what is a fuel cell?

Fuel cells look alike fuel tanks but are designed differently. Usually

doesn't
sit as deep into the cell as it did the tank and is probably the reason for

Not 7 billion,,, 14 billion for large oil companies. It is only the price
for 2 more super carriers the navy hasn't enough men to crew. or 1 more shuttle.
Another "big dig'. !4 billion dollars would be wasted by public schools or
hospitals. We know it so we will never attempt it. (same logic behind the lack
of stem cell research.)

Bush is a great example of why democracy shouldn't be shoved down other

[QUAD-L] Questions People ask us Quads.-The Power Book

2005-08-08 Thread wheelchair
Hiya John,
I encourage you or anyone to read a book of the 70's by Peter Korda, called
the Power book. It was a best seller and went into several printings. I am
not
a book reader. I just don't have the time, but when I read this book, I
couldn't set
it down. It deals with the progression of power. How to recognize it and
how to
deal with it. One of the chapters was on the subject, ON. ON, stands for
Owe Nothing.
Its not new to you and others. The Chinese are great believers of ON as they
feel
that they must pay all of their bills by the end of each year. But ON,
affect many of
our daily decisions in lift. Other chapters include, The Power of Buddha and
Women and Power.

Great Advice JR!
Celebrities and Quads need to offer some heads up before arrival as it is
difficult to
imagine what anyone needs. And in business, you try to accommodate

Re: [QUAD-L] Questions People ask us Quads.

2005-08-02 Thread Greg

I don't mind questions about my injury. If people don't
know anyone with a spinal injury, they probably don't know much about it. There
are so many reasons people use chairs, so many ways people get paralyzed. You
see people listed as quads who can walk with a walker, but don't have perfect
control. Being paralyzed doesn't always mean "complete".
Plus, anyone who doesn't know much about it can get
misinformation from watching TV movies where everyone who is paralyzed ends up
walking because "They have such courage".
I say to the non disabled... "Ask Away" it's the only way
to learn. The more they learn about us, the more they will see we are just like
them... only different :-)

I find it boring to keep repeating a story about a car wreck I don't
remember. I enjoy making up more exciting stories. The adults seem to love the
one where I fell from a 7th floor window while hiding froma woman's

I have told people that I'm highly contagious and unfortunately, It's
too late, they were exposed when I said "hello'. People are obviously more
